Ama
>>
I want to punch you in the face.
>>
>>17524216
I want to dent your riced out shitbox with my sign
>>
>>17524207
why do you fuckers never take down your signs when you're finished work and leave a confusion between drivers whether to do 50 or 25
>>
>>17524207
What do you think of people who rip past once they are clear of the workers and flaggers?
>>
>>17524239
Because standing around doing nothing for 12 hours is way more tiring than it looks, honest
>>17524245
They're kinda annoying assholes, but as long as they don't buzz/hit my workers, idgaf
>>
>>17524207
How much does holding that sign pay?
>>
>>17524207
how much do you make?

Here in california the caltrans workers start at $25/hr, even the flay guys. Then they get awesome overtime and a pension too.
>>
>>17524270
13USD/h
>>
That sucks man it gets so fucking hot out literally like a punishment for a job not to mention being looked down on by everyone
>>
>>17524207
are you union?
if so cool
if not I hope your scab ass gets hit, snagged on a back bumper, and dragged behind a truck for miles before you eventually die from the shock of having your skin ripped off by the pavement
>>
>>17524207
You must love coal rollers huh?
>>
>tfw equipment operator

I appreciate you lads that do the grunt work so my fatass doesn't ever have to get off my ass
>>
>>17524289
Yeah, but sometimes I get to point at people angrily, which is pretty cool, I guess.
>>17524313
I actually kind of enjoy it, when there isn't much traffic. Something interesting and fun that breaks up the monotony.
>>
>>17524325
Sometimes I feel like workers resent me after a long day for having a simpler/easier job. You ever get any of that?
>>
>>17524356
Yeah sometimes only because I am younger than most but just the way life is some are doers and some are donters
>>
>>17524207
how much you get paid? i hear caltrans folks make decent money
>>
I don't get why they pay two people to hold signs when one person and two lightboard devices can do the same thing. Standing there holding a sign has to be the most awful job ever. Punishment even.
>>
why does one side let 30 cars through at a time, and the other 10 through at a time, even when there is a big backup on the 10 cars at a time side?

Its a job for either brain dead people who don't mind being bored or autists who spend all day philosophizing
>>
>>17525958

I cannot honestly fathom working for any less than 10 an hour. It just isn't worth it.

At least around here, they are constantly looking for more people, and can't find enough. Try sites like indeed.com, or just walk in and ask if they're hiring flaggers.
>>17525320
15 feels reasonable when you're in a vehicle, but we'd much rather you be going 5~6 through the zone. You never know when a worker might walk out from behind a truck, or anything like that.

Blue collarfaggit here, been blue collar my whole life, mostly dairy and fencing. Been a gardener for the past 5 years. However, lifting logs and fucking housewifes has kinda been taking a tole on my body, been looking to get a new job, something less physically demanding.
Been thinking of being a plasterer, painter or a lolipop man.
Would you reccomend? Does standing on asphalt for 8 hours fuck your back?

>tfw operator
>tfw get asked to flag once in a while and make $38.50/hr to sit in the bushes and wait for someone to come on the radio so i can hold the sign for 2 minutes every hour

feels good man, so does whacking people's cars with the sign when they don't stop

>living in a ghetto with no noise pollution ordinance

>>17527125
true story: i was working nights on the rail road building a temporary detour line, and they had the rails lifted up about a foot off the ground and some guys ripped through the site on stolen bikes and the guy in front totally biffed it

he ended up ditching the bike and got on the back of another

it was hillarious
>>
>>17527185
We have a 24 hour noise noise ordinance, and I live on the good side of town

Who do you think fucking authorized the construction?

It's basically so parties can get busted and rock bands can't practice in their homes.

>>17527239
Nigga there is no excuse for my house rattling before 7 AM. Idc that union guys want to work 12 hours a day for those extra union sheckles, that's a reasonable time to begin.
>>
>>17527384
if your noise ordinance doesn't include non emergency construction, then your neighborhood isn't as good as you think it is

Why do Americans hate unions so much?
Like 90% of the German manual laborers are in unions and it's working fine.
>>
>>17527405
because they like low wages, high turnover, no security, and generally racing to the bottom
>>
>>17527396

>>17524207
Hey former mot here what company do you work for mate? Like awp was a mess.
>>
>>17527405
Not sure about in Germany but in america unions protect shit head employees, has an us vs them mentality with the company, and thats all i can think of for now.
>>
>>17527914
In Germany, unions protect workers from being exploited and organize strikes, so they can demand better wages.
>>
>>17527922
In America they do this as well. However a hundred years of propaganda in the country with the largest global media presence has largely defused support for unions. The largest scapegoat is the autoworkers unions, which some people blame for the lack of manufacturing jobs in the states.

This is entirely false, as the entire reason manufacturing left was due to increasing profit margins by finding cheaper labour, not because American labour is expensive. Certainly making cheap cars gives you an edge in the market. But if you use more expensive, more qualified workers, you always get better products.

Two tools with the same torque output, but one has worse build quality.
>>
>>17527405
In Germany, a representative from labor typically sits on a companies board of directors. So they are more aligned with making the company succeed and profit rather than bleeding it to death for the benefit of the high seniority workers.
>>
>>17524207
Is it true that you can reprogram signs like >>17527601 by basically just rolling up and pushing some buttons?
>>

>I flag traffic for a living

Flagging is for small jobs. A few decades ago, when I had to commute down I-5 in Seattle, they had a project to do seismic upgrades on the raise freeway sections. They'd barrier off a couple of lanes for a mile or so and bottleneck traffic.

Every day, I'd drive by and look over in the work zone. There were a couple of guys with a clapped out pickup truck drilling holes in the road deck for bolts or whatever. Every few days, they'd move a hundred feet or so. It took them a couple of years to finish the whole thing.

Fuck that. You block my road and you'd better have a contractor that can get people standing elbow to elbow on the job. Finish it and give me my road back.

Important to know, shifts range from just a few hours, to as much as 14-15. It's pretty bad on your lower back/lumbar and your knees/ankles, but I have no idea if it's actually worse than any of you're other options.

I recently passed by 3 CLOSED ROAD signs, while driving down said road. It was quite usable and the construction to an ADJOINING road wasn't due to start until the next day.

When I got to the FOURTH sign, I stopped and folded it up, then threw it into the ditch.

I did this with the next two signs I passed as well.

Don't close roads if they don't need to be closed, and don't tell people they're closed when they're perfectly fine to use. I hope you had to crawl into the bush to find the other two signs, because I fucking WHIRLED those fuckers into some deep brush.

And your "SLOW" signs are ambiguous. I drove past some of you guys waving your slow signs, and I slowed down to 5kmh below the posted speed limit. Sign boy started freaking out and waving the sign furiously, so I revved my engine past him and floored it. When I came back the same way after doing groceries, I made sure to drive at normal speed past him, and he got extra triggered.

One day I'm gonna run you over.
>>
>>17529306
You're right. If that were completely true, Donald Trump wouldn't have had several failed businesses.
You are correct that pay grade isn't directly related to competence.

But you cannot deny the quality of work that better paid workers, to a certain point, always give back. There's a bit of a bell curve with it. Especially when job safety and security aren't on the line. And people have things like medical benefits and what-not.

It's why European goods tend to be of higher quality than American goods, and why American goods tend to be better than Chinese crap.

Flaggers don't set up traffic patterns or signs, they just hold sticks and stand where the boss makes them stand. Please don't hit them, the job fucking sucks and they're not the ones making things miserable, that's purely in the hands of the guys running the show.

We're not supposed to put up signs that don't apply at the time we put them up. Call whatever company did this and see what their policy is, or call the local authorities and see what the law is, instead of throwing other people's property into a ditch like an angry child.

We're are not police, and we are not supposed to direct traffic. We're there to slow drivers for the safety of workers and motorists. Please do not hit us, or our workers.
