If it was dry as fuck it could stick. Should be pretty easy to pop it loose.

Worse case, take it apart and re-oil the frictions. ( just throw them in a ziplock with a small quantity of oil or a tray and dip them, make sure the little pads have oil on them ), no need for a long soak time, you can put it back together right away.

I'm 23 and I'm a sheet metal worker/fabricator/engineer. I part ex'd my old bike against it and got a loan to pay the difference.

This way, the bike's mine from day 1, so if I decide I don't like it or get bored of it (neither of which I can see happening) I can sell it and get something else. Wanted one for ages though, ever since I saw the facelifted '15 shape, such a gorgeous bike.

How big is the hole? If it is only a few millimeters, JB Weld that bitch up. Be patient and give it time to set before you run the motor. IIRC epoxy breaks down pretty quickly in high heat.

my bike came with a bunch of extra parts, and one of them is a sort of half chain guard, that covers the part of the chain next to your foot, but leaves the part over the rear sprocket exposed. So what I'm wondering is what is the downsides of this compared to the full guard?

Countershaft seal, prett much same thing, pay attention, there may be an O ring hiding in there under a collar. Best to buy a kit and get the seal/o ring/collar, may also need a new bend washer if you bike is that type.

dayumn, I just traded my 690 smr for a more touring oriented bike, still have some feelings toward it, just hope that I'll be able to afford a second bike later on.
Now I'll have to cruise around smoothly in the 'Bus. One day I'll trade it for one of those 1190s or the 1050 when I have the cash and get a 500EXC or similar for hooning and track duties...
Meanwhile the Busa is alright for me as well.

I recently bought a 954rr fireblade after owning two sub 30hp bikes

They aren't insane bikes that are impossible to ride, it only takes a ride or two to work the throttle and within a week you'll be riding how you always have
There's a reason people CAN daily litrebikes, they aren't superhumans

Sounds like the engine is fucked. Knock is probably a scored bearing.

Time to upgrade the engine internals and build it into a /fastbike/

I don't have a stethoscope, so I can't tell where it's starting from. But it sounds like a knock. The exhaust note is considerably lower and I've got a real power loss here.
Bout three days ago it started. I was working out of town and rode home. It began right at the start of that ride. I thought my fuel was low because it does that when the gas is indeed low.
So I filled up with premium in the Petro Canada of a tiny hick town that was open at 3 AM, and indeed it was low.
But the performance loss and exhaust note continued through the whole ride home. I put some seafoam in the tank. Ran it for about ten minutes after and nothing changed.
>>17524506
But upgrading internals will cost money. Is there a good place to find a kit to bore it out and not pour lots of money into it?
I am a poor college student, it should be noted. I got the bike thinking I'd tinker with the carbs with my dad once in an afternoon or two and be about my business. Seems I was wrong.

If it's pooched, I'm just gonna sell it and buy a proper riding machine.

i4 600s are cheaper than the equivalent 1000 and they aren't slow. Low rpm they do lack the grunt from a bigger cylinder bike but they are also geared to hit the 160+mph in top gear. First gear is typically looking at least 70mph...

Drop the gearing on a 600 and you will make much more use of the gears and won't have any lacking in lower rpm, how often will you really be looking at the 160+ area? If you limit top speed with gearing to even ~140 you will be pulling away from liter bikes easily but obviously hit the limiter sooner, and get to 140 way faster than stock
>>
Should I re-spring my forks this winter or just pay a shop to the work for me?
>>
>>17524566
First gear is 70mph in part because it's impossible to fully use a short first gear with a high power low weight bike because they're wheelie limited. Helps roll ons a bit but also fucks your highway RPM
>>
>>17524396
>I don't think I'm good enough for a 600
it's not that big of a deal, the very first time on a fast bike might be a bit jarring since you don't know what to expect, and aren't accustomed to the responsiveness of the bike, but after a few rides it's not really that big of a deal so long as you know how to ride responsibly.

Pretty low miles but it's understandable if it was just used occasionally I guess. The plasti-dip paint scheme is meh but I don't see any actual damage or dents to anything underneath the plasti-dip. I'm not noticing any rust anywhere on the bike so the owner at least cared about it enough to wash it off and store it inside.

If it runs good when you go check it out then I don't foresee any problems with it. Don't plan on doing any highway riding as it tops out at like 65MPH with the throttle pegged in top gear. It'll be fine for low speed roads and great for offroad.

600's are pussycats at low r's. They are doctor jeckyl and mr hyde. Just keep the r's low initially and stay out of the power until you have room and are ready to twist wrist. If scurred, roll into power in higher gears instead of banging through them. Work up to it at a comfortable pace and all is well. Look at dyno plots to understand how and where a 600 makes it's power and then approach that power only when ready.
>>
>>17524668
If you're only looking into a liter because the sheer size of the thing gives it more usable low end power (more power everywhere), but don't want to send your insurance rates and running costs through the roof or never ride in the rain again without traction control, it's the best sportbike to own, period.

It's also a little lighter than the GSXR1k.

>>17524688
They behave like beginner bikes below 8k. It's a ninja 500 in terms of power until you hit the real powerband.

Also some people think shifting is fun.
>>
>>17524668
There is no reason for the 600 to exists, unless you want to race but the r6 is the best bike anyways. The 750 is the exact same bike with a slightly bigger engine. Honestly I see no reason to buy a 600 since the 750 is barely cheaper.
>>
Any scooterfags here? I kind of want a Bergman400 or 600 because I have surgery on my left leg coming up and won't be able to shift but I want to stay on 2 wheels.

How are they for commuting? I normally ride a Virago 750, and it has more than enough power for my commute, I did fine on my pevious 350. How long do scooters last? If I get one with 5k miles on it will it need tons of mainainance?

Insurance discounts and insurance classes. The UK is a big enough market that 600s are a viable mid-size class, and many areas increase insurance costs by 100cc brackets. So a 600 can save a hundred bucks or more a year compared to a 750.
>>17524688
My reason for owning a 600 is mostly insurance. It doubles over a liter compared to a 900, and the insurance for owning a 750 is double what the 600 is.

Truthfully, you don't need a liter, and about a 600 is what you can use to have a lot of available torque. Specifically for highway speed to get away from problems when you need to. And to have a lot of fun without keeping the engine highstrung all the time.
(Though riding a 250 or 300 at it's limits with the engine cranked out to 17000 is fun in it's own way and is a great exercise in building motorcycling skill.)
Plus eventually I'd like to step up to the liter, but right now with my income, my age, and my insurance, I simply cannot afford the liter.
Even something like pic related would be expensive for me.

Suzuki keeps it because it's their heritage

Customers keep buying it because muh torks and insurance discourages people under 30 from putting more than basic liability on their liters
>>
>>17524706
>They behave like beginner bikes below 8k. It's a ninja 500 in terms of power until you hit the real powerband.
Have you ever even ridden a liter bike? And if you have, was it made before or after 1995?
Liter bikes are infinitely less forgiving to novices, you can easily give too much throttle and throw your back end out, even at incredibly low speeds.
The torque is much higher compared to a 600.

>>17524717
>Specifically for highway speed to get away from problems when you need to. And to have a lot of fun without keeping the engine highstrung all the time
I'm going to need some clarification on what you mean by that. 600's rev much higher than liter bikes do.

>>
>>17524779
>but let's be realistic here, anything that can be humanly avoided or legally passed on a liter, can be done on a 600.
Absolutely, I'm not arguing that. I'm asking why, when given the opportunity, you as an individual (in a general sense) chose a 600 over a liter.
I'm not talking shit about 600's, I just want the people who made that choice, to give me their reasoning.
>>

600's exist for that racing bracket, and end up pretty high strung
1000's are similar, but loads more power, to the point where most feel like they cant stretch its legs on the street without getting in serious trouble
>>
>>17524656
You don't have to. I stay in Tacoma and may be the only faired 250 in the US. Come say something, you see me in parking lot.

I originally wanted to get hard panniers and make this into a mini-tourer...turns out they no longer make racks that size.
At the end of summer, I'm going to get a quote on heated grips, custom racks, a new seat, stiffer springs, a not-bent handlebar, and a few decals. If that slides under 6k, I may still do it...but I'm thinking it may just be smarter to start fresh with a zero-mile cb500f... Maybe change the cluster and keep my fairing.
>>
>>17524694
what do you ride faggot?
>>
>>17524793
Half my post got cut off in a cut-paste mishap.
When you compare a 600 to a 250, a 600 needs much less throttle to keep that good torque on the rear wheel. So it's easier to ride spirited.

Mostly it is insurance keeping me from owning a liter, but definitely part of it is that I don't see a real need for a liter. But I will admit I want a liter in the future. Especially when I start earning more money.

But for now, and in actual fact, the 600 is enough for me to get into trouble.

The 6k benchmark is actually the price of the 500 with grips and seat for winter riding. Since they make the same gas, are both P-twin, I wouldn't mind upgrading so I could break the speed limit under load.

Or pay the cards I maxed out being unemployed, and finance a VFR800F deluxe. All I need then is a wrap, pic related.

just did oil
so you are sure you didn't overfill it right? because that would give you problems. like some described what is capacity?

Kills me that the only bikes that use it are ludicrously expensive. It'd be cheaper for me to design and make myself, which I would if it wasn't suicide.
>>
>>17525211
>>17525271
The capacity is 2.5L, and in went 2.5L, approximately.

Though I had been adding oil to my bike previously. It had been leaking, so when I kept getting low on the spy glass, I'd just add more.
If the bike's crankcase went over pressure, could it just be a blown gasket?
I'm hoping I didn't completely fuck the bike up.

What coolant for SV650? Live in Texas so it's always hot as fuark, not worried about freezing
>>
>>17525287
Well i would be real curious just exactly how much oil is in it if I were you...should be relatively easy to check no? >approximately/kept adding oil
and now oil in bad places=check it no?

How long have you had the bike? did it ever present loss of power? how many oil changes have you already done to the bike? where is it leaking oil from? what year make model is the bike again? are you mechanically inclined? Is this your first bike? What all issues if any has the bike had since you have owned it? Did the previous owner mention anything?

HAVE I ASKED YOU ENOUGH QUESTIONS? kek

I think you've asked me enough questions so we can find out what's probably fucked. In order.
>since March
>only at the beginning, before I properly tuned the carbs and replaced the carb boots on the engine side (old ones were cracked)
>one
>cylinder head cover, and since the oil change, the filter drips on the ground (the lowest point on the motorcycle)
>1983 Yamaha Maxim 650
>No, I still have my first bike, a Ninja 250 I was supposed to sell to a buddy. I've kept it running.

>battery replaced, sprockets and chain, carb boots (engine side). Bike started off in my ownership running lean, power losses on the highway

>PO of course sold me the bike without mentioning future problems, and I'm inclined to think he knew the storm was brewing

Power loss when low on gas leads me to believe you have a partly clogged petcock screen. this will make the bike run lean as fuck all because the floats cant fill fast enough in the carbs. Lean as fuck = hot as hell combustion temps which melts pistons, melted piston migrates into the ring lands and you get wicked blow by that fills the airbox, make a shitload of noise as the piston is trying to cock sideways on every stroke and a huge loss in power.

AKA your bike is FUCKED.

I'm not a fan of multi compound front tires. That hard center section just means the center looks new when the sides are cords. That triangular tire profile that you now have makes the bike handle poorly.

If you commute on your bike too disregard the above, it only applies to hard ridden toys track/twisty

I like long distances, and am literally upgrading because it's cheaper than custom panniers. (And paint, bars, etc)

I ride everywhere anyways, year round. A low powered gas-miser is perfect for me. Especially since I still want to dick around off-road, but still be able to do the slow bike fast thing. (knobbies/spokes meant for cb500x would work)

My tires are done and very prematurely. I was over enthusiastic on highway 1 and at 5000 miles I've worn everything but the center rib.

Moab is just going to be a look and see and mini hike if I see anything worth walking up to. Pretty much a see it so I know what to plan for.

I'm hoping to be in Provo by nightfall and boise the next day.

I may postpone that if I get to salt lake and the BMW convention thing is hopping. BMW MOA is having some huge Thursday thru Sunday meet at the convention center. Literally the GS were out in gangs on 50 heading up. Alot of the guys said it would be worth stopping by as they have vendors from everywhere there and many bring samples of product lines for other bikes and often have stock on hand.

Far fetched but hoping black dog cycleworks is there and I can score new footpegs. I may just see if I can pick them up directly in Idaho on my way home as well.
