what jobs in the automotive field could I get as a 20 year old male with only a high school diploma? I have tools and informal experience, wrenched on various shitboxes with my dad since I was old enough to spin a ratchet. currently working framing houses and I fucking hate it, the pay is very cushy and I'm pretty good at it but I wouldn't mind less pay if I could work a job that I could actually derive enjoyment from. what are my options? lube/tire tech? I imagine you'd need ASE certs to wrench at a dealership.
I wouldn't mind working in a parts store like oreillys either but I hear from friends that the management in those places tend to do pants-on-head retarded shit on a regular basis, which is partially why I want to get out of construction as it is.
>automotive
>enjoyment
There is no such thing.
Step 1; Sears/Walmart/Jiffy lube oil jockey. Learn to change oil, tires and wiper blades.
Step 2; Dealership. Aim for a local group and ad high a luxury brand as possible. Be prepared to start looking for classes.
Step 3; ASE certs.
Step 4; realize the job sucks and you would have been happier in the warehouse or behind the parts counter.
deliver parts.
You get to visit all the garages in your area, talk to knowledgeable people, and tool around in an underpowered shitbox instead of dealing with the retards who come in looking for parts for a "ninety-something toyota whatever/can't you look this up with my credit card/why is this so expensive?"
retail work is awful, nobody wants to be behind that counter. Auto parts retail might be the worst, though.
I worked at a tire shop for a few years, it was pretty fun.
But now that it's all TPMS sensors, low profile tires, and 22inch wheels, it's not what I wanted to keep doing.
I work at a local garage.. no ase cert needed.
