Suzuki. Not as much rice tax as Honda's or Toyota's. Solid motors.

Mazda 323

You'll have to pick between mpg and reliability
Can get a mk3 jetta tdi motor will be great will come stick but will deal with fwd problems such as cv joints and front end parts wearing out sooner
If you want less gas milage but better relaiblity something like a crown Vic (sadly auto) will be more reliable because it's a solid rear axle and labour cost are normally a lot cheaper on rwd cars because of ease to work on.
My opinion on which cats specifically would be something massed produced to tits with cheap parts so Toyota tercell or echo Pontiac sunfire or cavalier. Happy hunting anon
old corolla

I'm actually going to concur with you on this, my first car I bought on my own in highschool working a min wage job was a cavalier I got for just over a grand, I beat on it relentlessly and it never died, albeit it was probably the worst car i've driven
What about a Nissan Sentra/Altima/Maxima ?

my sister had a 2003 altima i wouldn't recommend it, it ended up self destructing it's engine, the engineers who designed that engine were fucking idiots.
