Hey man I just wanted to let you know that your comment really hurt me. Allie Knight has been the apex of /tfg/ discussion for several months now and it's obvious that her absence is causing a disruption in our morale. even though many of us did not like her, there was a certain je ne sais quoi to her presence that put us at ease and made the melancholy of truck driving just slightly more bearable. so please don't go around saying "no one cares" when it isn't true.

Kek, at 55mph with retarded e-logs, truck drivers will have to start doin some real fucked up stuff to get deliveries done on time.

Somehow it will end up like prohibition where they regulate more and more and some underground shit to skirt the rules will start happening and make everything worse.

Or there will be more and more rookies and shitty drivers on the road because all the good drivers gtfo from mega carriers tryin to limit them on hours and speed and still pay them 30¢ per mile
>>
>>17517348
Is it hard getting used to driving spread axles after driving tandems? I took a flatbed load securing class so I could regular skateboards instead of lowboys, but all of my close quarter maneuvering relies on spinning donuts. Especially backing, I've read guys on forums say they just straight up can't jack knife back into truck stops and have to find easy spots.

It takes some getting used to. Jacknife 90 with a loaded trailer and you can crack crossbeams or break tire breads on top of rubbing the tires bald, or if you're running recaps, tear the tread right off. That being said, there's nothing easier to back than a 48' spread axle. No tailswing and being able to see over the trailer = no worries. A front lift or dump axle lets you do some crazy shit.

>>17518141
Never had to slide an axle or have a load shifted. With a 10'6" spread axle the trailer axles have their full 20,000lb weight limit. When in doubt, just center the load behind the trailer center and use that comfy 6000lb buffer. Also, if you're running partials, you can load a 20' 20,000lb load and have the whole rest of the trailer to throw on another 20,000lbs+ of freight. Put 20k to the back of a tandem and you'll never get it legal.

>>17518234
It happens literally anywhere trucks and cars share a road. A truck goes you pass, and a 4-wheeler will throw a shitfit and exaggerate.

>>17518141
It has more to do with structural integrity than a need to weigh 40k lbs over the rear axles. Flats routinely haul most of their weight concentrated on a tiny footprint on the trailer (e.g. a 49k lb master coil)
To accommodate this, modern aluminum flatbed trailers are built with an arch in the frame, which straightens out when the trailer is loaded, which makes it difficult to engineer a full sliding tandem system with enough track to balance such a heavy, concentrated load.

Full steel flatbed trailers still exist, and some do indeed feature sliding tandems, but they're about 5k lbs heavier.

And it still needs a complete AC system overhaul, compressor is shot, lines are leaking. Clutch will need to be replaced, as well as the 10 year old tires. It was fun though, been 9 years since I had one, brought back good memories of my youth roasting 2nd gear on the on-ramp

Why not just flip the switch to lift the rear axle? Is america that behind in terms of technology?
>>
>>17520799
Better question is how weak are USA trailers to not handle the weight of a pivot? My tri axle with 21tonnes on it doesnt experience the problems that I have read ITT. I do it twice a week all year and have yet cause any structural damage. Yeah some more tyre wear happens. But thats about it.
>>
>>17521114
American trailers have a hard time handling 15 tonne on a tandem setup without causing damage.
>>
>>17513978
Why do truckers think they make good money?
>>
>>17521159
Depends. I am a company cuck in Australia and I earnt 120k roobucks, 9 day fortnight, averaged 10hrs a day and home every night with weekends off.

But majority are general freight plebs.
>>
>>17520799
>>17518089
>>17521114
Also, euro-trailers can handle being scrubbed around every single time the truck needs to turn around. Three axles mounted near the midpoint of the trailer means you're always gonna scrub them. They're just designed to take it, and the weight.
Thus, you can haul 4 4 T O N N E S with a two-axle tractor because most of the weight is borne by the trailer.

I'm doing a lot better now with my current embloyer than I was back when the GMC broke.

With the recession in the oil and gas industry over the past two years, a lot of people either took literal pay cuts, worked less hours, or in my case at the time, got paid less because the well servicing company charged less to try and stay in the good graces of the oil companies, and every daily "job bonus" that was based off the ticket (invoice) revenue went down.

In the past three years, I went from making over 120k a year as a supervisor, down to maybe 70k when the GMC shit the bed, and am now have back up to around 100-110k a year with the new job.

Is that legal? My cumknee says I'm supposed to log everything as it happens but obviously I don't want to waste my hours. I got inspected a couple times but the officers barely even looked at the logs so I don't know if that means I'm good or they just didn't pay enough attention to notice

>>17521468
If you're actually doing work, put it on line 4. Say it takes you 3 hours for a live load. Log the half hour you spent sitting in line and bumping a dock on line 4, then if you sit there with your thumb up your ass the next 2.25 hours throw that on line 1, then drop to line 4 for 15 minutes to inspect/secure/seal the trailer. If anyone asks and insists you were on duty, the bulletproof reply is "how iz i un doody ad magdonals : - D".

Does anybody here haul gravel/asphalt/aggregate shit? I'm studying these CDL questions and was wondering what a typical day is, aside from being a van-hauling cuck

*what a typical day is like.
Sorry, i'm just fucking out of it
>>
>>17522919
I worked road construction, they seemed to like it. I mean, most of those guys retire doing it. From what I understand, it goes
>show up, pre-trip, drive to hotplant
>haul asphalt to site, dump or be dumped by dump man
>pull forward to clean out site/down the paving line to ensure no remaining asphalt is stuck in belly dump and scrape as needed
>repeat until Foreman tells you to suck his cock and get back to your bull prepping duties
I'm thinking of going back to the same company now that I have my CDL and some otr experience to do just that.

>"Here are some specific activities which are considered to be onduty time: Alltimespent at a plant, shipping / receiving facility, terminal , or other facility of a motor carrier, unless you are in your sleeper berth or have been relieved of all work related responsibilities."

>post-trip
>grab a cold slice of pizza

Sounds pretty chill. I've been wanting to get my CDL and hopefully haul loads like that. I've been doing patios (im a landscaper) and majority of the time I have to go and get loads of gravel or brick. Probably not the exact same thing as trucking since i'm driving a F450, but it's something that i've been looking into.
>>
Truckers, I really need this answered

I'm stuck in a paycheck to paycheck situation, and I'm trying to save up for a local independent cdl school (I am not interested in company sponsored training if I can avoid it)

I was considering selling my personal vehicle so I can take the cdl school (my relatives will take me to the school, the school has free dorm rooms) then of course I would begin applying for companies for company training with another driver, which I understand they will pay for your bus ticket

So my question is, will selling my personal vehicle bite me in the ass? Will I really need it since I'll be otr for my first year? I understand I can drive the rig back home with most companies, and I could use my family's vehicle for whatever I might need while home

Let me know, if I sell my truck then I can easily afford the down payment required to start school and quit my shit job at the same time
>>
>>17523888
Also how many of you went through the company sponsored training? Do they do a decent job training? Or is it sink Or swim if your having trouble with a certain aspect?

I did the company sponsored thing. So did TF iirc. It's not the end of the world if you go that way and it does have the advantage of getting you going faster which sounds like you need to do. Just pick one of the megas like Swift or Werner and shove off.
>>
>>17524547
I wouldn't recommend Werner for company sponsored training. I got my CDL independently, only took 2 weeks, and I joined Werner because they offer tuition reimbursement. I get a bonus every month which will total the cost of my training. However, almost everyone else in my orientation went through Roadmaster, and they said it took 4 weeks, some longer because they failed the first time, and now they're stuck in a contract with Werner so they couldn't leave if they wanted to until the contract is up, and the best part is, they were all trained and tested on autos so they have a restricted license. Good thing Werner just bought a thousand brand new automatic freightliners, right?
>>
>>17524588
Not defending Werner but that fact is the nobody would recommend ANY starter company yet for the most part that's where you have to begin.

>automatic rant

No. Just be a man and drive a truck with no AC
>tfw I'm sweating before I even get to my first stop because the truck is 120F inside and it's been raining a lot and humid as fuck in the morning

A couple years ago the big boss of the whole region told us "There's no reason you should be driving trucks with no AC in South Florida!"

Our small format fleet is probably 40 tractors. About 12 old ass Int'ls, 15 KWs that are getting up in age, and the last 8 newer Int'ls.

The 12 old Int'ls are like 20yrs old and none have AC. The 15KWs are about 15 years old. Most of them had working AC a couple years ago, but now 2/3 don't have working AC or if it does work it doesn't blow worth a damn. The 8 newer Int'ls (newer as in <10yrs old), 2 or 3 have no AC and most of them, the AC blows at room temp on the highway.

Fleet doesn't even attempt to fix it anymore.

I haul for Dr pepper too and they are very professional and clean.

Funny thing is of all the beverage and beer companies around here, Pepsi has its shit together the best. Coke is a huge clusterfuck, 7-Up/Snapple is just a shitty little company and I heard them and Arizona make no money. The Miller distributor got bought out by another company (Reyes Holdings) maybe 2 years ago and everybody quit. Budweiser is the one company where I actually see the drivers stick around for more than a couple months.

I agree. I have one of the furthest routes and seniority so I should have a newer truck, but nobody enforces the shit and I'm not trying to come in at 4:30am to fight people over it.

Failed drug test any options? Ok yes I know DON'T DO DRUGS!, However july first came rolling around and I was at an outdoor concert in Belleville, Trooper, anyways there was a lot of people smoking and after having a few drinks I smoked a couple joints with friends. I have just received my license and had my first interview. Unfortunately they asked me too do a drug test on the spot! Today I received a call from drug test and low and behold I failed. The doctor said the cutoff was 15 ng/ml I tested positive at 30 ng/ml. I was told I would have to enter substance abuse program before I can retake test. My question is did I just Fuck up my chances at doing long haul into the US. Please refrain from slamming me as I know my mistake I am 45 so I should have known better, I just wanna know my chances in the future.

Newfag question from someone getting into the industry. About what percentage of loads do you have to manually unload if you run dry van for a megacarrier? I ask because my old man has been delivering grocery local for 20 years and his back is all fucked up and I don't wanna end up like him.
>>
>>17537224
The phrase you want to look for in they're advertising is "99% no-touch freight". I pulled a van for 2 years, and other than a poor choice to join a floor loaded dedicated account for 2 weeks, I think I only unloaded one load of beans because it was a 6 hour wait for a lumper, and tailgated a load of fiberglass and a few reefer loads with a pallet jack.

Good luck. It sucks. I hope you have some $$$ for all the classes.

They will probably make you go talk to a "Substance Abuse Pro" first, and the best bet is to try and convince him/her that you just got really unlucky and that was the first time you have touched any drugs since you were in high school.

That's the person who will assign you whatever BS you need to do before you can get back to work. If they think it was just an honest mistake and you aren't a full blown drug addict, hopefully you will just get a couple classes. But when it happened to me, it was 10 AA meetings and like 25hrs of these other classes for people with DUIs and it all cost around $2500 and took close to 2 months. And the lady said that was "light" and people with serious problems will get 40+ hours of classes.

Luckily it happened when I was in CDL school, so on job applications I can still answer "No" when they ask if I have ever failed a drug test while employed driving a commercial vehicle. But they almost always ask those questions on applications for driving jobs, so hopefully your current employer will still keep you around.

That being said, if I ever get a random and I know I will fail it, I will drive straight to detox instead of Concentra for the test. They will have a hard time firing you if you're in detox and you piss clean when you get out.
>>
>>17536769
>>17538653
Also sorry just woke up and saw it was a pre-employment drug test. But sounds like it's still getting reported to DOT which sucks.

And when I failed mine, I also got caught just above the threshold. I was a pothead and quit like 6 weeks before but I guess that wasn't enough time to clear out years of THC when you smoke all day everyday.

Just make that substance abuse person believe that you really dindu nuffin and you iz a gud boi who just made a mistake this one time and hopefully you will be able to drive again in a month.

And idk how that will hurt future employment. Not sure how that failed drug test comes up when they look at your driving record (it's not on an MVR) and Pepsi still hired me so it's not impossible to get a job.

>>

>I don't mind unloading with a pallet jack. Thanks for replying.
Oh you will. You will.

For the most part, megas don't supply drivers with equipment like pallet jacks since they're not typically in the LTL game. That means when you get to a receiver you have to use the shitty manual pallet jack with three out of four wheels, of which two of the remaining ones are flat-spotted, and it takes continual pumping to keep it only slightly off the floor. You decide that this is total bullshit and ask the lumper service to take over but now they're mad at you and tell you to fuck off.

So now after two hours you've managed to wrestle the eight pallets off and start to break it down you find the shipper loaded the pallets with whatever came down the line in random order. Since only one product number is allowed per pallet those eight pallets rapidly become 10, then 14, then 20, 30, and so on. You don't have extra pallets on board so you have to beg, borrow, and literally steal pallets from all over the dock. Sometimes you have to break down an entire pallet to get the one fucking box in the middle on the bottom and then rebuild the pallet after you've gotten the one box.

Finally after hours you've got this shit all broken down for the receiver who eventually wanders over a couple of hours later and immediately start rejecting the pallets you've used because they're been repaired and they don't accept repaired pallets. Oddly enough it just so happens that ALL of the pallets you've used have been repaired and thus rejected so now you've got to replace all the pallets with new ones. After a couple more hours you've got this done and the receiver seems satisfied so now you merely have to wait a couple more hours for the paperwork to wend it's way through the office.

Luckily for you you've been there long enough to get a break in so now you get to drive to your next stop a mere 600 miles away and you've got just enough time to get there.

Why do truck drivers have a hard time understanding when and how to run a regen for their after treatment systems? There's warning lights and alarms and a big flashing button. I've had this same truck in two weeks in a row where the driver simply never ran a regen and is running with the exhaust brake on at all times which prevents passive regens despite explaining very clearly not to do that. If the truck comes in with the same codes twice that are informational for "operator error "and I can make it work just fine in the shop and during a road test warranty isn't going to touch it with a 10 foot pole.

You can unscrew the bolts that attach the handle to the vertical metal rods holding the doors closed. This lets you get another load in there if you have a sealed but half empty trailer, or pull out some of the cargo while maintaining plausible deniability. Natural born americans don't seem to do this as much as immigrants, especially Russians.

So tell them you got stopped by DOT and they wanted to count how many underage Chinese girls were in the trailer.

We have seals on the trucks in the morning, but it doesn't mean shit because the warehouse misses loading a case or two almost everyday. They use a voice pick thing to make that impossible, but I guess the warehouse dudes memorize SKUs or some shit and they can get around it. Sometimes there is an extra case on the truck too and the rest of the day I'm thinking "who did I forget to give that to?" but now since each delivery is on a pallet, I normally know that it was the warehouse and not me.

They count the whole warehouse nightly tho so hopefully it balances out. There is a guy who is there like 4 am who does it and he looks like a straight child molester. Nice enough guy but I'm not a 9 year old boy so I have no reason to worry.

I've never pulled out of Wisconsin for less than $2/mi and we have some accounts up there too that I ran for a while, but it has legitimately been 4 months since I touched any of that stuff so I don't know if rates have moved up or down, the last time I was there was Roger's AR at that Tyson Processing Plant and that paid about $1.80 going into Zero Mountain CS and coming out from that Tyson too. >I'm the Anlax, I speak for the chans

I'd rather read liquefied sugar merchant's blog posts about his personal life any day of the week if the alternatives are posts from a bunch of losers like yourself that do nothing but complain and contribute nothing.

Also, go fuck yourself.

(Picture related, it's essentially you)

>y u no going going back to back to Halli Halli?

Didn't they build a wall or something to prevent this from happening?
>>
>>17551740
shit sucks, man. I left Halli cause my buddy up in oklahoma said he had a job for me on a friend of a friend's rig moving crew where I could run a winch truck, but the truck they had lined up blew the fucking PTO out, and since that was their one open position, now I ain't got shit.
fuck me.
>>
>>17551682
Then you and him can both fuck off to tumblr or Facebook. The only reason he's complaining is because soda nigger is blog posting again even though he's had several warnings from the mods in the past. If he wouldn't be such a constant attention whore, there wouldn't be these stupid off topic meta shit fests.
>>
>>17551755
That does suck. Have you tried to get on with a third party sand hauling company like 1845, or something on those lines?
>>
>>17551620
>>17551756
>t. babies with full diapers that could use naps
>>
>>17551780
I honestly haven't looked into sand too much - I've just read too many horror stories of "check's in the mail" and not getting paid, shit like that. I should probably look into it more though, because at this point I'm a cunt hair away from just getting a fucking construction job in one of the 7 million subdivisions they seem to be putting out here.
>>
>>17551785
I'd rather be that than a lonely desperate attention starved manual laborer, or the faggot that defends him.
It's pathetic. If you, uh I mean, if "he" had anyone that he could talk to about his life or how his day was, if even one person in the world cared enough to listen to him, he would talk to that person instead of needing to vent it here. The rest of the thread is people truckers talking about trucking. I don't know any other truckers, well, the ones I do I don't want to talk to, so I come here because I don't have a circle of trucker friends to talk to about trucking.
What's worse is he's not even a trucker and doesn't know anything about trucking. All we get is his blog posts and shit posts, he's the one who contributes nothing.
>>
Nigger we're truck drivers, obviously we don't have anyone to talk to irl. We're all starved for attention.

Not at all. I run dedicated hand unloaded ltl so almost zero of that applies to me. Are you sure the thing that hit close to home wasn't realizing you don't have anyone to have conversations with about your day to day life? Isn't that realization what triggered your little temper tantrum in the first place?

dollar general?
>>
>>17552235
Close. Dollar Tree. Thought about DG since they get those rolltainers to just push around but the good thing about Dollar Trees is that they're almost always in big shopping center areas, easy in and easy backs. Dollar Generals are sometimes in neighborhoods and rinky dink towns and I'm too afraid of hitting a kid on a bike aga-, er uh, or something like that.
>>
>>17552279
fair enough. I'm way too used to driving clapped out farm trucks or winch trucks to do any of that ltl shit.

Sand is breddy easy hauling, especially if it's in a belly dump or end dump as opposed to a pneumatic.

What do you want to do longer term? Running some kind of winch truck like a Texas bed would be a sweet gig.

I was considering trying to get on doing that, pumping liquid nitrogen, or running picker cranes when I got the offer to come run hot oilers at my current embloyer.
>>
>>17552314
longer term I've been trying to save up and prepare to get licensed for crane operation in the 250t and under weight class, but that's kind of a while off. I have some (under the table) experience running cranes and it really clicked for me. it's not a bad gig being dedicated and all.
as far as driving goes, I'd prefer to stay primarily offroad since I fucking hate city hops and OTR sucks donkey dick. there's a couple bucket/mixer companies here I might go for, since those rigs are a little more what I'm used to but otherwise I don't really know.
get me the fuck out of NM.

Yeah, running mobile cranes would be deadly. I did it a little bit with a 45 tonne unit when I was coil tubing, and really liked it.

If for some reason hot oiling doesn't work out, I think that will be my next focus.
