Piss easy to work on, absolutely bombproof (a friend of mine has another of these with 520k Km, which other than a gearbox at 400k, has only been using up wear parts), good torque for its displacement.
It really is one of the most underappreciated engines around, mostly overshadowed by the bigger brother C20XE. When it comes to engines, Opel really was godtier in the late 80's/early 90's. When I was searching for the car, I went out of my way to find a good condition (and it really is, apart from the dreaded cracked pillars on Corsas, only a couple minor rust spots to fix) older 8 valver, instead of an Ecotec one that tends to eat head gaskets.

Fun fact, I have yet another friend with one of these, stock but very well maintained engine. He always thought it had more power than its official numbers show (82hp), and it turned out to be true. He took it to a dyno once, which read, and I'm not shitting you, 101hp.

Yeah, this engine is made for long term battle,and if you take care of it you can make it last longer, probably can take more that 101hp, with the help of a turbo or a blower, but the internal combustion will ruin the engine sooner

It can, it responds quite well to mods and you don't even need to turbo it yet, an aggressive cam, exhaust and mapping already put it well into 120hp territory. But if we're talking about modding them, I wonder if it isn't better to just swap a 16 valver, and work from there.

It's pretty much the same engine with a different bore. It's an easy job, that's for sure, take the old engine and ecu out, drop in the new ones, done. But in the end the story is the same: 16 valvers such as the X16XE and C20XE have more aftermarket parts available.
In my case though, if I were to swap the engine, the C16SE would be my choice, because of how retarded our laws are (any and all engine swaps are illegal, so your best bet is to swap an engine that looks like the old one, and hope inspections don't notice the engine code).

Dont have any real decent pictures of that side of the engine, but this is basically what it looks like. It looks like maybe the valve cover gasket shit the bed and got replaced but they never cleaned the engine afterwards. It's not losing oil anywhere that I can tell.
