They went bankrupt and had to put something on the chopping block. Personally I think they should have axed GMC, leaving Chevy as the entry-level/truck brand, Pontiac for sports cars, Saturn for import fighters, Buick for entry-level luxury, and Cadillac for full-tilt luxury.
