I've owned Commodores (VR and VY currently) and I've never had an issue with the size. Even after moving to the city. My uni mates love it because there's so much leg space in the back.
I'd suggest test driving one, however I wouldn't get anything older than a VE.

its the suspension in them, like they do ride nice over rough terrain but they just don't turn nice and the body roll is atrocious in every falcon i have ever driven.
the interiors also feel really cheap compared to a same year holden which says a lot considering how cheap holden interiors are compared to euro/japanese cars

I have a turbo ute, your excuse for fuel economy is void because you drive it off boost during normal driving and has basically the same economy as an n/a, plus no matter what people say commodores and Falcons are genuinely a comfy car to drive, can fit full sized humans are in the back and when you need to move a decent amount of shit.
