Just sold my Subaru Legacy in favor of getting something more basic in terms of reliability and general utility.
Fortunately, there seems to be a couple Toyota Tacomas for sale around the state of Iowa. Even though they aren't 4wd, I will try to take precautions to make them safe for driving in snow, such as snow tires and maybe chains when going short distances. I will be driving from my house to my school in the fall. 100 miles each school day.
Anyway, what should I look for? Rust is all I can think of, and test-driving it to make sure it does what a vehicle does. My price range is under 2k so I can save up for a motorcycle.

Rust is definitely the biggest issue I've seen right behind the cab mostly where the frame bends. Also checked the back brakes almost wrecked one on a test drive because the previous dick had bypassed the proportioning valve and it had no back brakes going into a sharp turn.
