Has anyone bought a pair of those cheap ebay HID spotlights? I know the ebay LEDs have crap distance, but given HIDs inherent strength is their distance maybe they aren't so bad for under $100?

My vehicle is worth like 2k so spending half its value on high quality lights that will just get stolen anyway isn't really an option

Your average run-of-the-mill chinese HID spotlights. They'll give you decent lighting for sure as long as the ballast and bulbs are decent - but, a good ballast is often quite big, and the biggest actual good ballast I've seen fitted inside the lights was a 65w ballast inside an NBB 9" lamp - 100W ballasts inside 9" lights usually means either you're gonna have overheating issues, or the ballasts might be a tad undersized

As for the lamp itself - 100W inside 9" can work fine, but I'd never run them when you're driving at low speed for extended periods (unless you live in a cold climate like mine during winter).

LED is the best lighting you'll get for offroading tho - takes more punishment both in getting smacked and the vibrations, plus they give you more light per watt compared to halogen and and xenon

Stedi is an alright brand, or so I've read and been told. Still, 1 lux at 500m is quite hefty for a bar that small - my 50 inch Rigid, with its 10w diodes and INSANE long mid-beam (pictured) is rated at 1 lux at 800m. I have no issue believing that a 22" bar could reach that also with the right concentration and quality, but the question would be how much of the illumination on the areas it sacrifices, and just how big the 500m cone is

>>17499809
As good as the tires its on...
Depends on what you mean by "in snow". Digghting through deep amounts of snow its quite alright due to its tall ground clearance and their usual wide tires

On ice and light layers of snow ontop of ice/hard ground - somewhat sketchy for the same reasons as above

Still; its all in the driving and the tires
>>
>>17499901
>Digghting through deep amounts of snow its quite alright due to its tall ground clearance and their usual wide tires
>On ice and light layers of snow ontop of ice/hard ground - somewhat sketchy for the same reasons as above

Tire quality being equal:

So, high snow = high car for high clearence

Low snow, ice = heavy low boat for weight distribution and handling
>>
>>17499901
Same guy. An analogy:

The snow or rain you're trying to get through, in relation to your car is the same as a person.

IF you're trying to walk through two feet of unplowed snow on a hill, you stand upright, stay light on your feet, and lift your legs up to kinda bounce through it. (High clearence, wide tries.)

If you're trying to cross a snowy or icy parking lot, you squat down, spread your hands out to increase your weight distribution and center of gravity. (Lower clearance, medium tires, heavy body)

You still need to be wearing decent shoes (snow tires) and not be retarded (driving skills) for each, but both are mutually exclusive to conditions.

Pretty much

Having weight on the tires is also a huge benefit. Ride height doesn't really do *all* that much on the ice grip under normal circumstances as you're gonna break sideways traction before you get any serious bodyroll, its more that the soft/tall suspension allows for that little body roll being needed to break that sideways traction

Equal weight distribution is alright, but you'll often find that RWD vehicles are too light in the ass even with relatively equal distribution, and pickups without 4WD/pickups in 2HI even worse

I built this box last winter, filled it up with about 220kg/500 pounds of concrete slabs in an effort to see just how much of a difference it makes

2HI (RWD) without the box and the shitty winter tires it came with; no chance to get up hills, broke traction really quickly
2HI with the box and shit tires; acceptable grip, but I'd still need to put it in 4HI to get up the steeper parts
2HI with the box and good tires; damned good grip in all aspects, very rarely needed to engage the 4HI (steeper hill starts, pulling people out, trailer pulling)
2HI without box and with good tires - still quite alright, but a very definite difference. Still some places I would need 4HI, but not for the daily commute and regular snowfalls

The order of importance, in my mind, for winter driving is;
>the driver
>tires
>weight on the driven axle(s)
>car configuration (FR, FF, FA and so on)
Small note tho; the driver aspect kinda works ontop of all of the others, as a good driver is one who has the proper equipment and car for the environment he will be driving in

As for the deep snow offroad driving and so on; you want a low weight, as fat and aggresive tires as you can get, lockers, tall fucking ride, and the ability to run as low pressure on the tires as they and the wheel can handle

Really low gearing also helps

>Buy 2WD S10

I do intend on buying a parts truck and installing the rear axle and fender flares on mine. Kinda feel like it would be a form of truck rice though.

Every ZR2 has either been babied by it's single owner, or has been driven into the ground. Seams like here in Ontario $5000-$7000 is what a good ZR2 will go for, while clapped out ones range from $500-$2000. ZR2 frames like to crack between the bed and the cab where the frame normally went from being boxed to c channel. S10forums are pretty good for learning stuff about them.

Yeah I was originally in the market for a Ford Ranger Sport but bought this thing on impulse. I've had a bunch of fun with it so far but at times I hate it, usually when I'm getting pulled out of something that almost anything else wouldn't have a problem getting through. It was probably one of the top 100 condition unmodified s10's left since its almost completely rust free, in 6/10 cosmetic condition, 9.5/10 mechanically, 82K KM, and 3 previous owners. But I really could've gotten a much more offroad capable truck for $4000. At least there's barely any rounded off/stripped bolts and I've learned from owning this that I definitely want 4WD and a crew cab like a ZR5. Won't be as bad when I replace my 27in tires with 31/10.5/15 BFG KO2's, a 3in lift, and actually put my winch on.

$1500 will get you a D44, 14 bolt, beadlocks, and 37s.

Some people make a big deal over it but it's really pretty simple to do.
>>
>>17502605
Yeah that't not far off from the plan. I'm sure I could actually do it since it doesn't seam that hard really. I'll end up getting a transfer case once if I can get a ZR2 parts truck anyway. I wouldn't put any bigger than 35's on an s10 though. Ultimately this truck is going to be used to haul other offroad toys into the sticks, drive over curbs, and drive fast on unmaintained/dirt roads, and do burnouts anyway so IFS isn't the biggest deal, but it's still 2WD the way it is now.

so I've decided I'm gonna lift my XJ ~3 inches. am I gonna need anything besides new coils, leaf packs, and struts? also gonna get an adjustable track bar so the axle sits centered. been doing some googling and some people are saying to get new lower control arms and sway bar links as well as a SYE kit as well as a t-case drop (which seems excessive to me, but IDK). I'm also told I would need to either relocate or replace brake lines. trying to avoid this because its also my DD and fuck bleeding brakes by myself.

You can unbolt the brake lines and bend the metal lines to allow more length, that is a minimum requirement. You can get away with a transfer drop for most everything. You don't have to have new control arms, but if you're actually wheeling it you really should. Sway bar quick connects are also a really good idea if you'll be wheeling.

Aw shit, forgot

I probably would've - I've been eyeing a kit ever since I saw what difference it made on pic related when my buddy installed the same kit on his Hilux.

That, coupled with the fact that my rear suspension is on its last legs AND that the place I bought it had 30% off on all OME kits... well, it was a no-brainer

I'll also order a new stock suspension package from Milner Offroad so that I have one incase I'd ever need to go back to stock for whatever reason... its like $200 for a complete package of leaf springs, bushings, clamps, shackles, pins and grease

If you're in soft or annoying dirt/ sand, you can either use clay or use a large, wet piece of wood as the "bridge". I make covfefe by using an old aluminium can (355ml or talll boy 473), filling up with water, putting it into a raging fire, and then using that hot water for instant coffee, french/aero press.

Anyway, the dakota fire hole is good for cooking without needing a platform

>>17518268
Get the 35s or else 33s will take an annoying while before you're allowed on again. Ask around for gearing, of course. But also, might as well go full AT and get 38s :D?

I'm 95% certain I just found an OM617. It's sitting inside a half restored 240 right now and if it's the .950 or older, I'm going to buy it and chuck it into my Land Cruiser.
Or I can put the FZ in the 240 and drive that beast of a vehicle around...

Anyway, you'll be ready for winter! Does that include a levelling kit or just a front / back same lift?
>>
>>17522070
For the front its only shocks that came with the kit, most of the lifting itself is from adjusting the torsion, while rear is shocks, leafs and shackles

It'll be the same front and back - I don't even think the Hilux has any rake from the factory anyways

What are the power differences going to be with the OM617?
>>
>>17522179
Your hilux has fucking torsion bars? Geez I hate those things so much. Don't I see coils in that kit, though - or are those shocks? Also why no rake in the Hiluxes? Tacos have like a 2.5 inch back "lift".

Just checked my emails now. Mid 80s OM617.951 pushing out 185 ft/lb. I'll leave it in my engine bay for a few months and see how urgent a turbo upgrade would be. Friend did a .950 swap into a 4runner a while back and barring issues with the radiator (from a small engine bay relative to both the 300TD and the FJ80), he got it powered very well up to 130km/h. Otherwise, I think 120km/h is the maximum speed I'll be able to go with the factory turbo.
I know arctic trucks has some 400HP builds with the OM617 so I'll look into it a few months down the line.

The good thing is that the Merc 300 transmission has a power drain of anything from 25-40% for some weird reason. Putting the 617 into the 240 managed a lot more HP and torque than not.

Sounds like it'll be an imrpovement, and hey - any improvement is very noticeable when you already don't have all that much power from before
>>
>>17522318
I mean. Torsions are not the end of the world. But if you daily it like I do with my Ferd Rangy, I would HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend you swap out the torsion keys instead of doing a crank on the bars. The decrease in ride quality is massive. If not for yourself, then for the grills. (they already complain about the ride quality without torsion increase). There was even a slight ride increase once I got the keys in.

Anyway, it's a power decrease from the FZ. A very, very noticable and big power decrease. But the fuel economy savings, lack of heat waste (from the heads on the LC that weigh as much as anvils), better idling economy, and increase in range is very needed. Right now I get 200km / 80 litres when running trails (5.5MPG) and 500km / 80 litres highway (13MPG?). With the OM617, I'll be able to get around 500km / 80 litres (15MPG) on trails and something stupid like 1200 km / 80 litres on highway

I own a ZR2 Blazer.

They eat front end parts (ball joints, tie rods, control arm bushings). Frames have a problem with cracking around the lower control arm mounts.

Front diff has a vacuum disconnect. These can go bad and cause tranny fluid to get into the AC/Heater controls (yes.. they're connected.. good job GM). This can all be eliminated with a non disconnect shaft from an Olds Bravada.

Heater controls will almost always fail (its the blend door vacuum piece iirc). You'll end up with heat on the floor all the time when its off and only in the top/defrost when on.
>>
>>17525803

Correcting myself. The vacuum switch on the transfer case goes bad and causes it to suck fluid into the AC/Heater controls.

so, here's what I have total for parts

new coil springs
new adjustable track bar
new rear leafs (current ones are pretty worn)
new extended struts (thinking maybe Bilstein 5100s)
sway bar quick DC links
SYE kit
adjustable lower control arms
might get a new steering stabilizer just for shits n' giggles
remove rear sway bar (didnt know I had one)
new wheels and tires
a bumper to mount a winch to in case my dumbass gets stuck

am I gonna need any specialty tools for any of this? I know I'll need spring compressors and snap ring pliers for the SYE Kit. anything else?

Yeah, I'm sure it has nothing to do Deer and Cat making a fucking killing on you not being able to service your own equipment and needing one of their trained techs to come out for $500/hr. It for sure has nothing to do with planned obsolescence for the improvement of the bottom line of these companies and it's totally the fucking EPA's fault. totes for sures brahs.

Sure, much of planned obsolescence can be attributed to the fact that it's a good buisness strategy profit wise, but without the EPA pushing for greater efficiency there would be less of a reason to make things more complex without becoming a meme like German cars, since it's in the name of efficiency it's acceptable to the populous.

Posted in the old /org/, but things have moved forward a bit more, so I'm hoping for some last minute advice.

If all goes well, I have someone who's going to trade me their J100 Land Cruiser for my DRZ400SM, which is kind of crazy in my opinion. The Land Cruiser is easily worth double what my DRZ is. From the pics he's sent me it looks to be super clean and well cared for. If I end up making it out there this weekend, are there any common issues to look for with these?
>>
>>17530448

Nothing too specific to the Cruiser except the usual shit like rust and general shitty maintanence. Depends on the year though.
>>

I've been to so many car meets where the homemade snorkels are usually so badly made I can feel the heat from all the leaks through the AC piping they used.

>>17530624
You can do that or youc an just buy the ebay ones for $75 and put it on your vehicles. That's what all the forums recommend and the cruiser / jeeps around here run $75 snorkels without issue.

Got mine but waiting for my engine swap before I put it on the fender.
>>
>>17530295
Would drive.
>>
>>17530658
Not sure what I'm going to do with the J100 if I get it, but selling it for a 80/70 is definitely a possibility. It's probably going to be replacing my XJ, and I'm sure I'll missing having something to take in the woods and beat on. Either way I'm going to register it and then I'll have a month until the title comes in. That'll give me some time to decide what I want to do.

Gonna replace the transmission fluid, filter and gasket on the FZJ105R tomorrow. Never done it before. Is it easily done within a day?
>>
>>17530998
Miles? Which part of thegasket requires removing on the ATF?
>>
>>17531285
236,121 miles, and it's 5speed manual. Can't honestly remember what gasket the guy at the shop said it was for, but he basically implied that if I was gonna change the fluid then I should do the filter and gasket as well.
>>
>>17531337
Probably a cover to it?

Liquid gasket or rubber? Sorry, not familiar with manual tay yoda trans. ): ATF evacuation on the auto is like a 2 hr job tho. My ford 8.8 gasket seal takes 3 hours (if you count the one hour it takes to let them settle)
>>
>>17531362
No idea, the guy had to order it in so I can get it sat morn. Gonna say it'll probably be rubber. Hope to god there's no chunks of metal in the fluid and that the change will fix the crunch I get if I try and normally shift from 2nd to 3rd and sometimes 4th to 3rd.

For SUV I prefer the 2door look, but it's not a deal breaker. For pickups I'm not really a fan up just 2 seaters. Something just always looks off about then to me. I'm fine with the half door ones though. I live close to school but have to go 300 miles home every once in a while. I'm also in the drumline and I know other people would appreciate having a place to through their gear, especially in the winter when our gigs are walking distance but there's a big risk of slipping on the ice while walking and damaging the instrument.

How are Chevy's compared to Ford reliability? The only Chevy I've worked with was a turd gen Camaro
>>
>>17537344
Chevys break, but they do it in a way that leaves them driveable. Almost every GM product on the road has a mechanical problem, but they all fire right up and get their driver from A to B. Dailied a 98 Monte Carlo with bad head gaskets and major structural rust for almost two years with zero impact on driveability. The coolant was a brown-gray soup, the radiator fans didn't work, and that thing still cruised along at 75+ straight and smooth. The guys we sold it to drove it home after we snapped a trailing arm in half trying to jack it up. Additionally, working on a Chevy is dead simple, the majority of the US shits gold bowties so even their econoboxes with smog-spec engines have massive aftermarket support, making parts dirt cheap.

Fords break slightly less often, but when they do it impacts the ability of the vehicle to function. Have a Taurus now with an intermittent fuel starve condition, 99% of the time it's nothing, but occasionally after a warm start the engine will lug and sputter for 5-10minutes, even if you blip the throttle, rendering the car undriveable until it smooths out. Suspension's completely shot too, needs all four struts, two ball joints and probably a tie rod end. Bottoms out anytime you hit a bump taller than 6", and god forbid you take it down a dirt road.

FCA products are just sensitive to maintenance. If you neglect maintenance, your vehicle will fuck you over with multiple major failures in quick succession. Keep up on them, and they'll have the failure rate of a Ford with the failure impact of a Chevy. My transmission in my Ram started slipping on cold starts back in November (~185k miles at the time). I've probably got another year before it actually starts to impact driveability, and even then a rebuild should be enough to get it back on the road. One of my coworkers dailied his old-ass T&C with a nasty rod knock for over a month, still got him around just fine.
>>
>>17537344
Depends. Ive owned nothing but gms and chevys and ive had really good luck with my vehicles over the years. All of my vehicles have been preowned stuff ive found on craigslist. My buddy has only had fords and his vehicles are just as good.
>>
>>17537453
>>17537468
It seems to me that it's not necessarily the make of the car, it's just if the previous owner took car of it or not.
Anything particular I need to look out for? Like I've heard that when getting Toyota you should get the 4 cylinder because is crazy reliable and the v6 is underpowered. Stuff like that.
>>
>>17537763
GM V8s are literally everywhere, the small-block Chevy and LS platform are the two most swapped engines of all time. The Jimmy/Blazer has the 4.3 V6, which is based on the small-block Chevy. There is no other engine option. If you're going for a full-size (2 door Tahoe), avoid the 305 (if you can even find one with a 305) and go for the 350. TBI engines will be dead simple to work on, Vortec engines will make more power, either way you'll be happy. Since they're GM products, it takes serious neglect to kill them so pretty much anything you find should be okay with a little routine maintenance.
>>
>>17537780
This.
I own both a tbi 350 and a vortec 350. Great engines. Tbi is more simple to work on than the vortec, but the vortec will make a little more power and have slightly better gas mileage.
