>Occasional loud rear end clanging
Driver's exhaust hanger replaced, resolved
>Occasional rhythmic front end clunking (mph not rpm)
CV boots greased, hopefully resolved
>Hatch rattling
No key to open and get to bumpstops, haven't ordered a new lock cylinder for after I drill the old one out
>Engine area jingling at low RPM
Need to drill the right holes for all the '82 scoop, haven't sent the scoop to be pro painted
>Quiet metallic rubbing from both sides of the rear end at certain speeds
Undiagnosed - probably should just swap to discs

Bonus rust related items
>Wondering if it's okay to just layer por-15 over old undercoating that's starting to crack and flake
>Probably should fix that rusty driver's seat mount that pulled through the pan
>GOTTA grind out the inside of the passenger frame rail and por-15 it before it gets into the strut tower

That would be great but it's clamped on there pretty good. My striker is a hoop where most fox bodies have a peg. I pried at the jaws themselves pretty good from inside and they didn't want to budge. Didn't want to end up replacing the latch too since I'm going to do the lock anyway because I want to have a hatch key.

Also, accidentally posted a pic of it with the '83 scoop on it here's the bigass '82 scoop. It's only being held down by two screws out of 6 and some 3M tape at the front I just think it'd make it look way nicer to get it mirror glossy black while I have it off to drill the hood anyway.

I considered this, but then I figured anyone who wants to vandalize my car can just as easily run a key or a coin along the paint. I'd sooner have some plastidip peeled off, and easily reapply it - than have some fuck scrape my paint and cause $100s in damage, instantly.

Besides, where I live, people don't fuck with each others vehicles. There's a lot of lifted trucks, Jeeps, FJs, etc. and we all respect each other's shit.

Thank god there are absolutely zero niggers, too.

As much as I hate German cars, tinkering with Beetles and their ilk is quite fun.

And the dial-a-displacement thing is pretty cool, too. With a small amount of case machining, that 1600DP can be turned into a 1776cc or 1835cc.

I'm still here guys, I promise.

So, question. I was doing some explorative surgery on the bronco tonight, in preparation for doing seals and bearing on the front axle (4x4 Dana 44), and found an interesting gear ratio.

My ford 9" rear axle is 4.11:1 but apparently somehow my front axle has a gear ratio that is less than 2.00:1 . Yes, I get less that 2 spins of the front driveshaft to one spin of the front wheels. It's obvious somebody threw a junk yard axle in this truck, but what the fuck is it from? I didn't even know that ANYBODY made a gear ratio that fucking high.

And whats a good place to get a used gear set?

>>
>>17486097
The spider gears will make shit go wonky when you spin only one tire with the other locked.

Mark the yoke and housing and try to be as precise as possible.

Or look for a tag. I have no clue where it would be on a Ford. The other thing you could do is crack the center housing open and start counting gear teeth.

Okay, that sounds a little more logical. This is the first time Ive done the tire spin test on an open differential, all other times it's been on a limited slip. Thanks for the tip.

My tires do chirp and bind up pretty bad in 4wd, even going straight. I'm just going to crack both diff covers and actually count the teeth so I can order the right gear set.

the best you'll do without spending a shit-ton of money is an RPK. A proper GPMG like a PKM would cost a shit-ton and a DShK would require a small fortune, which is unfortunate because you really need an HMG, not an LMG/GPMG. An M2 is always an option, they're not Soviet but you still see them mounted on technicals.

Most of the arguing is just bants. Kit Kat doesn't really start a lot of shit, he just triggers people easily. He's either trolling or genuinely an easy target because of his questionable taste and decision-making. I like to shit talk him sometimes but it's just bants and he's actually a pretty good guy as far as I can tell.

The front axle is fine, its just that the axle seals started leaking, so Im just going to do all the bearings and seals in one shot. Then I remembered howeverything binds up in 4x4, so I counted the driveshaft/wheel turns and the front and rear gear ratios are different. At some point, somebody threw a junkyard axle in this truck and didn't fucking gear it properly. So tonight I'm pulling the rear 9" third member to count the gear teeth and inspect my limited slip clutches. Then crack the diff cover on the front and count the gear teeth and axle splines so I can order the right parts to match the rear gears.

Might have something to do with the era it was produced in. Those interceptor mustangs were quite literally faster than 90% of the stock Ferraris of the day. They didn't really need to call ahead. The only things that could out pace them could do it so well you weren't catching them at all so you might as well sit tight and radio ahead. Anything else was not outrunning you.

I paid $900 shipped for my set of corbeau seats and backets with double locking sliders. I went with cloth on the actual part where you sit and pleather (vinyl) backing. They're very comfortable and pleasant.

If youre okay with tossing $240 into the wind, go for it. They're probably cheap. But I can say first hand that Corbeau seats are worth it.

>>17495928
Woot, thanks. And nah, transfer case is fine. I just recently had it apart to seal it up and everything looked good. I haven't driven more than 20 feet with it in 4x4. The gear driven np205 is pretty stout, it can handle some abuse.

So i have a question for you guys. I recently acquired an old mopar and I love it. I have it 99% there, and its almost ready to be driven. The biggest thing with the car is that it has a medium amount of frame rust on the part of the frame under the footwells. Nothing crazy for a 50 year old car, and the rest of the frame and body are mint. I plan on capping it in the next year.

However, I'm taking it to shop to get the brake system worked on soon, and I'm kind of worried they're going to report it or something. So, is that a thing? It doesn't need any inspections or anything. But I know they will see it when they put it up on the lift.

Not a literal first car I'd drive but the first car that I'll own.

Thoughts?

Also, do I get a good one and preserve it or do I get a beater one so I can modify it and rice it a bit?
>>
>>17496274
That's always a tough decision, but it's one you'll have to make. I struggle with it all the time doing my Bronco. But the way I've always done things is if you're strapped for cash, make it run and drive and leave the rest for when you have money. Fix as much as you can on the interior with no money. Get some spare cloth and stitch up the seats with a needle and thread, fill the holes with some foam from JoAnn 's or some old foam from something else. Tack the headliner back up with trim adhesive spray. Stuff like that.

>>17497163
I have never heard of that being a thing and I work at a dealership.

>>17497583
I owned a 1994 525I. Immediately after you buy it, replace the water pump and thermostat if it's an I6. They are notorious for killing those engines. If you neglect it, it will happen, and it will happen very quickly. When it goes, it goes, and the temp spikes blows the head gasket almost instantly. Like with 30 seconds to a minute. Happened to mine. If it's an I4, do the timing belt, water pump, and thermostat soon.

I think the 428's have a different style motor mount. 403 to 400 is a direct swap but a 350 swap shouldn't be too difficult besides switching the starer, fuel pump, and alternator to the other side.
>>
>>17499727
Find some sort of Pontiac engine be patient and look for a cheap 400 they should go for around 300-500$. Go to the Pontiac junkyards in whitmore Michigan they will sell you one for super cheap. Do not ever buy a Chevy engine for a trans am you basically have a Camaro with a bodykits at that point.

I'm really suspicious of "boomer tax" cars like muscle era chargers and novas/chevelles. They're high value, but when the majority of collectors start dying off and they can't be sold for what they were bought for, prices will sink fast. Just think of how little the average millennial or gen-xer cares about them, you worry these kind of highly desirable nostalgia cars could be at their peak value. $80k for a restored 69 Charger can't be sustainable

Yeah, if you want to buy one NOW.
>>
>>17501616
What do you mean? That's what I'm saying, there's no way these insane prices are sustainable in the long run, might as well wait for the bubble to burst rather than buying now and hoping to god the inflated market holds its value until you sell

Hey, it's this dude again. I found something cool on my great grandfather's property. It's an Rx7 just hiding in the weeds. The interior is pretty trashed and I couldn't get any good pictures of it due to how much shit was growing around it but it's not too rusted out and the methheads on the street haven't hacked all the wires or taken parts off of it. It's still in probate since my grandfather passed away recently but more than likely if i want it I can have it since it was just going to get squeezed like the rest of his cars. With that being said I really don't have a use for it and if someone really wants it I can probably sell it for a really really low price. I'm going to pull it out of there soon and get some better pics.

Bang for the buck, there's no question about the small block chevy.

But, it depends on what you want.

If you just want a built performer, do that, build your franken car, and roast the tires off it.

Or if you want a nice and clean classic, build your Olds, or do the Pontiac swap.

Just remember though, Sammy Hagar doesn't sing about going out driving in his 5.7

Dumb question, but where do I add engine oil into a 1979 Camaro?

It's not the 350, it was swapped by the previous owner to a 400 cammed out to 406. Couldn't find a cap, pretty sure it's a hose

Like I've said before, I'm having trouble finding a sub $1000 block that's in decent shape in southern Ohio. Might as well just fix what I got for cheaper until I can find a 400 to build. Not in a rush to send it off to the shop, that shit is expensive.
>>
>>17510430
I live in Michigan I know the feels, just look south and try to bring one home. I have found a few jems up here though just keep at it and you will find one.
>>
>>17510458
I'm hoping mine won't be too bad since it didn't go through a catastrophic failure and it's only at 98,000 miles. With my luck it's gonna be expensive as shit and it's at 98,000 miles after it already rolled over.
>>
>>17510500
I don't know shit about the condition of my block yet, we got it sitting on a stand right now, rough quote was a bit under 3000 with heads redone and speedy parts put in and assembled.

If we have to bore it, I'm probably just going to eat the costs and find a different route to be honest.
>>
>>17510518
ouch, What kind of speed parts are you putting in it? I'm doing a pretty much stock rebuild so hopefully that'll keep the price low. Also my grandfather and I are going to assemble it after we get it from the machine shop so that should take some of the price down too. I'm really hoping it won't need too much machine work otherwise I'm screwed.
>>
>>17510578
mild cam, machined stock heads, and maybe some better pistons to help with the compression since I didn't go for the 350 heads.

other than that, i've got an old edelbrock 4barrel to rebuild, and I'll find an intake to go with that, and headers.

I'd love to get 400 horses out of it if I can.
>>
>>17510623
Nice, I'm thinking of some point going for the 350 heads if I can find them. Anyway, I'm not looking for any sort of high horsepower out of mine just a bit over stock for as cheap as I can get it. I just want something reliable but has just enough power to smoke some tires and mess around at red lights. Also I really want to put a bit bigger of a cam in mine since the stock ones are pretty shitty. Plus I've already got all the bolt on speed parts, edelbrock performer intake, headers, and holley carb.
>>
>>17510780
Yeah, I'm sure the 400 is a bit of an overstatement, but if I could get it close I'd be pretty happy with the build.

I'd imagine they run decent stock with those bolt ons, though.

What tranny/gear you running?
>>
>>17510789
It's got a TH350 and I'm not sure of the rear gears. Probably stock since 0-30 is slow as hell but above that she'll haul. After my grandfather re jetted the carb and messed with the timing curve it ran a lot better and would actually chirp the tires when it shifted.
>>
>>17510830
Also I think someone has welded or put a block in the rear end since it will spin both tires when doing a burnout.
>>
>>17510850
I thought all Trans Am's did that? They were the sales pitch for the posi-trac with their iconic pavement signature.

I'm putting my 403 in a buick with 1 wheel peel, and if my engine gets to be too radical all said and done, I'd probably end up going with a posi in the back.
>>
>>17510850
That's a positrac most likely.
>>
>>17510859
>>17510892
You're probably right, the original owner was making it apparent that it had been modified to do 2 wheel burnouts so I just stuck with it but then again the original owner was not an expert at all. Also it's a 4 wheel disc so I dunno if that makes a difference or not.
>>
My trans am has been just sitting for two weeks because the body guy is working on the 73...can't work on the 400 because the machine shop can't find 50 over pistons. FML
>>
>>17510900
The best way to tell besides going through the mild discomfort of taking the banjo off is to keep doing burnouts. If it's a welded gearset you'll probably blow it sooner rather than later.

If it doesn't have a positrac you might as well put on in. It could save your ass in a rain storm and they're cheap anyway.
>>
>>17510920
Honestly I trust you more that what the original owner said so it's most likely a positrac.
Unrelated but I wish it still had the build sheet behind the back seat. I would have loved to see what was originally on the car since I've found remnants of the deleted cruise control plus I'd like to know the original body color.
>>

I tried to bleed and flush the brake fluid on my 1979 camaro, although the the fluid was barely coming out of the bleeder valve.

I've read somewhere that this is some safety feature on old '60s and '70s chevrolets to prevent total loss of brake fluid in the event of an accident or something. But now I can't bleed the old fluid out. Supposedly it happens on cars with front disc and rear drum brakes.
