GS 500 BEST BEGINNER BIKE
>tfw no tuono
If I'm 6'3 and 200 lbs, do I really need to get a bigger bike, or would a CB500 be fine?

you could ride a grom fine

Why settle for a Honduh when Suzuki makes the superior beginner bike?

Since regulations.
And because kids want the "big bike feel" when they run it into a drainage ditch.

That's because they are so reliable and powerful, it's pretty much impossible to lose value on a Harley-Davidson. They are simply the best bikes on the planet.
For a beginner bike, you should look for a Suzuki GS 500 though, it is the best beginner bike after all.

Nice. Any plans for it?
>>17476966
I'd still want half that price, but I also don't need one half as new either.
>>17476949
The GS500 is objectively the best beginner bike.
> mileage
It's a mid-sized 4stroke twin cylinder bike, so it drinks less than 6 liters per 100 km.
> handling
It handles nothing like a supersport, spoiling you for when you get something else. But it can also corner much better than something like a cruiser, and actually uses its entire rear tire unlike a Ninja 250.
> brakes
They are complete shit and their only redeeming feature is that they're disc brakes. This is good because the longer braking distance forces new riders to plan ahead and start braking early. No ABS means they learn to brake properly I'd they don't want to get shrekt.
> power
It sits right at the power limit for A2 bikes which is great for euros. It's torquey enough to be faster off the line than most cars you'll encounter in the city. But it also feels relatively gutless so a) it's forgiving of mistakes and b) you can ride it at the limit without putting yourself into too much danger. It reaches up to 180 km/h which is fast enough for highway riding.
> carbs
It being carbed means that if you run into problems, you can learn to fix them yourself instead of heading to the mechanic every time.
> seating position
Upright, slightly forward means it's a neutral riding position so you can figure out what you want afterwards. The seat is relatively uncomfortable making literally every other bike after it will feel like heaven on your ass.
> price and availability
Parts and the bikes themselves are cheap and plentiful. If you crash and fuck up one of your fairings it's 40 euros to replace it with original parts. Engine needs little maintenance. Beginner riders are typically not financially independent, so this is a big plus for them.
> suspension
It's a budget suspension factoring into the overall low cost of getting a GS 500. If you want better suspension it's easy to swap. Therefore it gives beginners an opportunity to learn working on suspension while keeping the cost manageable.
>>17476977
2k is the lowest you'll be able to get an Evo Sportster desu. Any cheaper and you're getting a beat to death piece of shit

They're called cruisers for a reason. You're forced to take it as slow as you can and "cruise". Turn your head and look at the scenery, you're not going anywhere fast.
Like sportbikes force you to ride fast so you can get off the damn thing and rest your sore bits sooner

>>17477467
I went with a Tour Master Transition 3 for my 4 season / touring jacket. Looks bretty good, it was around $250, and I've used it in everything from 100F+ days to torrential downpours to slightly below freezing temperatures and it hasn't let me down yet. It's a little warm when temps climb above 90F but not too bad as long as you keep moving, it's miserable when you're stuck in traffic in those temps though. The jacket itself is waterproof so you don't need to mess around with one of those shitty rain liners, it kept my upper body perfectly dry when riding through HEAVY rain which surprised me.
They don't make the Transition 3 anymore, they replaced it with the Transition 4.

Thanks man, i'm more of looking at the waterproof stuff and it gets really expensive. Plan on spending dumping about 300 bucks on jacket and helmet.
I'm I a bad person if I get pants for cheaper?
>>17477560
Textile will be good enough for commuting. Leather is still king, but can be impractical for commuting. Its really hot, you show up a little sweaty, doesn't really work as overpants, so you have to have a change of clothes.
That said, I commute in leather.

What are the cops going to do, call a helicopter on someone doing something that's legal in the rest of the first world?
>>17477626
At what speed do you travel on knobbies?
>>17477595
Yeah, I wanted a waterproof jacket for touring that had an actual waterproof shell instead of a zip-in rain liner like a lot of "waterproof" jackets have. I wanted to just pull over, zip / velcro the front vents shut, and then keep riding instead of having to take the jacket off, find the rain liner, and fumble around with trying to put the rain liner in the jacket. You're right, real waterproof jackets cost a lot. The Tour Master was one of the more affordable options and I've been pretty happy with it so far.
Like I said, the Transition 3 is discontinued and they're selling a Transition 4 now, which I have no experience with but that jacket has pretty good reviews too.
I started out with some cheap ($~80) textile / mesh armored pants. About a year ago I found a ridiculous deal on some lightly used Motoport Ultra II Stretch pants in my size that a guy was selling on ADVrider and I snatched them up for about $225.
>>17477640

Probably phone to their buddies down the road to cut you off and ticket you. Or remember what your bike looks like and do everything they can to stop you next time they see you. Or swerve into you and make you crash then kick you and break your arms throwing you in handcuff.

The surroundings of where I come from turned into a huge construction zone recently. Highway being built on one end, one city closed its, traffic wise, most important intersection, the other it's, traffic wise, most important bridge. At the SAME TIME. Do the math.

I have a GSXR 600 right now. been riding it for about a year. how much harder is it to ride when you have a passenger? i am thinkin like a 100-120 pound girl max. i actually would prefer not to do it at all but i know this bitch is going to want to so I might as well. I am guessing that low speed maneuvering is a lot harder but once you're at speed its barely noticeable?

How do I get my gloves clean?
I've tried hand washing, washing machine, anti bacteria/anti mould
nothing works, they stink to high heaven. My other gloves which I also wear regularly don't have this problem so I can only guess its something to do with the fabric.
>>17478277
Bike engines have less torque than a car
You can easily shift at 4k or you can bangshift it at redline
>>17478284
Wash on a high temperature with biological detergent.
>>17478277
you only need to be in the power band if you are actualy trying to go rapidly, other wise just shift at 3k and enjoy a few extra mpgs

Meet my needs. Is ultra light for what it is. Super high quality. For the price I feel I got more bang for my buck than other options like the bumot soft bags. There is a 40 liter that would fit a smaller bike better. Overall the biggest selling point is that I can prepack throw it in a suitcase and bring it on my trips to Africa and next year also Asia and just throw it on a rental bike.
It's also nice knowing that if I go to a motel and want to offload the whole thing I can do it in less than 2 minutes.

I want to get a short stroke throttle for my RS250 that already has a m e n t a l power delivery because this throttle is way too long to fully open

>>17478981
more nervous. That's why it has a long pull throttle.
You could get cam-profile throttle pullys, which can make the bike easier to control while shortening the pull. Back in the day we would do the same to our stock throttles with sandpaper and epoxy putty.
>>17477064
>>17478981
If you frequently have to regrip to turn the throttle, a shorter turn throttle might help a little since you won't "forget" where you regripped at. On the other hand it will make it more twitchy where smaller turns will have more of an effect.

So /dbt/ I'm looking into trading/selling my 2006 SV650S for a supermoto that can double as a trail bike.
Right now I really like the DR650 for the offroad stuff but I don't know how great it can be as a sumo. I've also been looking at the WR450F but I don't know how well that can hold up to my highway commute every day.
What do you guys think makes the best supermoto/dual sport?

I'm able to take classes and get a motorcycle license for free. I live in Nevada though. Hot as shit during summer and it can get very windy.
I wanna ride though.
>>17479490
It's fine. I rode my DR650 at about 80MPH across the highway between Alamogordo, NM and Las Cruces, NM often. The crosswinds were ridiculous but wide roads and a little lean made it fine.

>>>17476884

>>17479567
and neither of them have particularly long maintenance intervals
>tfw no muscle cruiser
I don't want to sell any of my other bikes to get one though.
>>17479330
DR650/XR650L are probably your best option since you're commuting every day. Those miles add up too quick on race enduro engines.
But if you really want high performance a WR450 or 500EXC are really nice bikes. I wouldn't really recommend falling for the DRZ400 meme. It's ok at everything but not great at anything and probably not as good on the highway as the 650s.
What do you think they ride in North Korea.
Wonder if they have sport bikes.

>>17477687
Because they are pitiable, wretched beings...and the bikes are quite bad too.
Seriously. Get new glasses and look at your bike again.
Or compare lap times with any Kawasaki owner.
Or ask why Honda uses the same 15y/o technology, but their bikes last 3x as long.
Or look into the computer controls on the newest Yamaha.

Old bikes tend to flex and wobble because shit frames/forks
Carbs provide inferior performance for twice the maintenance and preventative care
The retro looks aren't actually that great and round headlights still exist
Old machines have dry, cracked rubber errywhere, weeping oil, gas, and brake fluid
Anything with drum brakes is a deathtrap
Also a lot of people here have dual sports, adventure bikes, cruisers (metric/indian), sports tourers, and nakeds/standards. From the last 20 years, of course.
