This, in the 90's lots of brands designed their cars to be safer for pedestrians. Mercedes was one of the safest brands to get hit by, while Volvo was known as the pedestrian killer due too high and rigid bumpers which pushed you under the car.
Those Volvo designs were outlawed by new EU regulations.
Plus those were still rwd, so the turning circle is comparable to that of a hatch like a Golf from that time or a new Polo
