That's not really what he's saying. They've renamed the company to Audi Sport to differentiate themselves from Quattro the AWD system. The potential for two wheel drive "Audi Sport" cars are almost certainly referring to the R8 replacement and potential FWD only A1 and A3 performance variants in the future.

Don't the real (read: not haldex) quattro cars already have longitudinally mounted engines? Would it really be such a big deal to just fit a normal gearbox instead of the monstrosity in pic related?

That'd give you all of the drawbacks of the "conventional" AWD car (engine ahead of the front axle, all of the understeer) with none of the benefits (relatively compact AWD traction).

I should have made it clear that the engine would be moved back as well, a non-quattro gearbox would be a lot more compact than the quattro one.

I guess the firewall would have to be moved back for that, and it'd require some major changes to the front of the passenger compartment and probably front suspension as well, but I guess we'll see what they meant by this.

Quattro is useless unless your driving in shit conditions, the split is 60 front 40 rear for all their RS to base model dogshit, so your still driving a glorified front wheel drive with spinning rear wheels. Source: Audi Technician
