But current LMP1 go a great deal faster than GroupC or GT1 ever did, even with the track layout that has made the track progressively slower over the years.

You just have nostalgia goggles, they were gorgeous too look at and listen to, but they weren't technically better or faster than today's fastest cars. And honestly, I would be pretty disappointed if moderns cars couldn't compete with ancient stuff from 30 years ago.

It was better racing back in the day when a team didn't need to invest an equivalent of 300-500mil € just to show up.

They didn't have to because of tobacco advertisements. But it still didn't stop the racing itself from being fairly bland when actually watching it though. Either cars broke down or they were all mostly lapping in their own zip code.
