/CCG/ - Classic Car General

Summer edition.

Bring your classic and lets all get rust in our eyes together.

>Rust is a bitch, and not for the faint of heart; tread lightly

>You will inevitably spend twice your budget, no exceptions

I just bought a 1976 toyota hilux. Engine is Toyota's 20r with a fresh rebuild from top to bottom, 32/36 weber carb, supra transmission (I don't know specifics), no rust, resprayed bottom, bed intact but with surface rust, one pinhole in floorboard driver side, A/C intact but not hooked up, pinhole leak in radiator, lacking exhaust exhaust, minor dings all over the body, and a toolbox full of spare parts.

I dropped $4000 on it. I have no idea what I'm doing. I just knew I wanted an old truck, and when I saw a 76 Hilux come on the market I had to check it out. How bad/good did I do?

Going to be doing some work to it over the next couple weeks to get it into shape. I exclusively post on /dbt/, but I guess I'll be coming to /ccg/ now as well and will come back with updates

thanks dawg, I'm stoked to work on and drive this truck. Would it be tasteful to put some good bedliner over the bed and floorboards? I figured the bed for these things is pretty hard to come by, especially in any appreciable shape

Well your truck has historical value whether you recognize it or not. Horizons and Omnis were literally throwaway cars with no other intention.
They're like Yugos honestly, some people may like them but the vast majority of people see them for what they really are.

>Well your truck has historical value whether you recognize it or not. Horizons and Omnis were literally throwaway cars with no other intention.
that's what I am saying about the MR2 though. That being said, a omni GLH and GLHS is certified cool. I have seen 10 second built ones a few times.

So there's a Citroën Traction Avant for sale for $2500 and I think I'm going to try to get it. Not that I need another car but it seems like too good of a deal to pass up. Called owner during the week and he says it runs and is fairly rust free, but needs brake and fuel system redone to be able to drive it. Although it's a holiday weekend, I'll call the place it's at tomorrow and leave a message saying I'll take it if it hasn't been sold yet, and that I'll put a deposit down on it.

>>
>>17464457
Most American classics are old, well cared for shitboxes. We just like them because America.
>>
>>17464524

This. I've had 4 classics, The Dart was a economy shitbox. The Impala is a slightly higher class full size car, but is still very basic and was a family car. The International, well shit, literally a poor man' farm truck. The Polara has AC, so I guess that makes it the highest class vehicle I've had, still a 4 door family hauler though. Nothing real special about any of them.

>>17463819
>sun-roof convertible
Didnt know my civic was a convertible!
>>
>>17464524
everyone likes them, because they had style, a signature look, and still look good. most look far better than the regular car today. a shitbox is a shitbox because it's an efficient ugly car.

we're comparing cars that are to this date so far apart tech wise it's not even worth it. They still had carbs, having a turbo or super wasn't common at all. a 92 accord is in no way a classic car aside from having the age

<longpost>

Crazy ass day. Thunderstorm woke me up at 2am and I went downstairs to park my cars under cover. Ended up wrenching a bit. Took the gf out for a drive in the light rain, which became a fucking hurricane, then I stalled out downshifting and flooded the carb so we were stuck on the highway.

Had AAA tow me to a local shop, rain dried up as soon as the flatbed arrived. We get her off the trailer and she's running just fine. Ends up I spend 6 hours at the shop just wrenching around with the shop owner giving me tips, I helped him with some errands and work and maybe he'll not charge me too much. As we go to move the truck onto to the lift to change the fluids, she stalls out again. I was right, carb was flooding, float was sticking and the accelerator pump is fucking garbage. Rebuild kit on the way...

All in all sorta fun, met some interesting people and maybe I'll go back next week and ask Bill if he doesn't want an apprentice. God knows I could use the income.

Wish I got some decent pics of the shop but this crappy shot of my fleet will have to do.

My dad is having trouble starting this engine after years of sitting, engine has been rebuilt with new sending unit, alternator, starter, battery, etc. He worries that our family mechanic that put the carburetors on. when he tries to start it and pumps the gas do you see gas squirting in the carb?
has he tried to use some starting fluid?
is the gas he's using new? if the gas is 2 years old i might have gone bad

Welp took the falcon out for the first time, she drove just fine for me around the block and back. Went to a gas station dad got mad at me for spilling gas, till he tried it and spilled gas. And had that "wtf expression his face" Told him the rubber condom bullshit makes it pretty hard for older cars to gas up. Not only that but she stalled 2 twice on the way back. Which is worrying us now.

....this 1963 Ford Falcon.
>straight body
>lil bit of rust that's in easy to patch locations
>came with a Mercury Marine 302 that has been allegedly rebuilt and a C6 trans for some reason

but the knock on it is that it is not a factory V8 car and as such is not set-up for that 302, and it'll cost a couple grand by my estimate to get it properly set up for it. So I'm thinking of just trading the Mercury 302 for a Ford 200 Inline 6 that'll slide right in (I also have a C4 that will accommodate it) and have a 6 cylinder hot rod. Thoughts?
>>
>>17468259

There should be a tube the runs from the top of the tank to the fill pipe, it allows gasses to escape while you fill, preventing gas from overflowing out the fill pipe before the tank is full.

Alright, I've finally saved up about 10k, ready to drop it on a project. I don't care about autism levels, I want to have a stripped metal lifted muscle as my daily.

No mad max tier pipes, and not a crazy lift, just enough to take it down a rough country or coastal lane (I will seal the metal ofc).

Any pony cars or similar ilk that I could pick up or import to Bongistan? I can sacrifice the looks for 3 criteria:

>Reasonable reliability
>Medium handling (barges are hard for roads round here)
>Medium MPG, or failing that, this will be my first engine swap

I know it's not a classic restoration but I figured you fellows might know a little about this genre of car, autistic as it sounds, I care solely about the aesthetics rather than the internals and would happily butcher it, but the less gargantuan the project costs, the better.

forgive the naivety of the question but how feasible would an engine swap be with a stang?
A friend has one, he bemoans the lack of any safety, the awful turning and the fact it drinks petrol like it's 1970.

Has anyone in these threads ever ran across a Toyota Celica Liftback? It's a 'ricestang', made 10 years after the Shelby, smaller and far more reliable. But very popular and rare

celica liftback was introduced in '76. you can swap a 22r into it no problem, or if you have the cash something cool like a 2tg

the engine isn't the limiting factor for gas mileage on a mustang, it's usually gearing and carburetion. you could swap to efi and put an overdrive trans in it but it's whatever.

another option if you are in britain would be a celica-supra on some black steel racing wheels with a mild lift and some all terrains. Decent i6, decent power, doesn't weigh much and better handling and mpg than you could hope for with a mustang. They're dirt cheap as well. you could also do a rally spec starion or 300zx or other

>>17469891
You know, I probably would have the same revelation when I actually own a nice classic, so the chances of installing any lift kit is pretty low. But the stripped metal, buffing away with a grinder for hours, as long as i seal it from rust, it's a hell of a lot nicer than piss yellow or maroon or whatever colour a cheap resto classic will come in, and my removal of its paint and rust will probably help out whoever owns it after me (or rust it into pieces).

I think it looks gorgeous and I rarely see it, pic related is my current goal aesthetic. I think there was a classic general a while ago with an anon with a stang who spent countless hours working on a patina, and it came out beautifully if you like that finish.

We got a good idea of what the prob was, we never put a whole lot of gas in her, and she has enough when at level surface to keep on going, but turns out we barely have enough which means going down a hill the gas doesn't get near the thing that sucks up fuel from the tank(can't remember whats it name for the life of me) Anyways that what we think is why she is stalling out, which means later this week we need to buy some more gas and get her filled to at least half tank to test that theory.

Alright, Im looking to get a project car that I can work on and fix up over the next decade. I'm enlisted in the American navy for 6 years and shipping out in january and looking to hunt down a car I can work on periodically when I get time and money. Not expecting to make any money off selling it later, nor do I expect it to be even remotely cheap in the long run. Im looking to spend within 5000$ but if it's a really good opportunity possibly up to 7500$. Im interested in mostly American muscle but I'm also interested in some 80s japanese imports and euro sports cars. It doesn't have to be fast, but it does have to be pretty and enjoyable to drive. I know thats not a whole lot to go on but thats really all I can say about my preferences. I live in the northeast of the US so I may have a bit of trouble hunting down rust free cars and certain cars that may be more common out west. I don't have much skill with wrench turning but I've got time and friends with experience so if I can find an easy car to work on I'll be pretty happy but if not I'll manage. If anybody has any suggestions or ideas on where to look for some good finds I'd love to hear them.

>>
Don't know if this is a stupid question or not.

I had an electrical pump in my car instead of a mechanical one because I bought the car with it and I couldn't be fucked to put a mechanical one into the tank. Long story short it burned out, and so did the replacement, and the one I put now is burning out as well. I was putting some real cheap-o pumps but this time I'm doing it right and putting some proper work into the lines and everything, as well as a Holley Blue.

My question is, will daily driving a car with a Holley Blue damage the pump or something? What're the downsides of having a pump like that in my car? Aside from the noise.

Also, to be comple tell honest, oil pressure gauge is really overrated on the 67-1980s ford trucks. Sending units are shit, and pretty much all of the aftermarket ones are shit aswell...
Inevitably they almost always end up reading low pressure after a few weeks/months after installing a new one, despite the fact that the oil pressure is within normal operating range.

I bought a new sending unit for my '81 Fairmont. Apparently people use a dorman unit for a '65 mustang.

I pulled the old one out and found the PO didn't put the float on it when he replaced the fuel tank. The dorman unit doesn't actually fit the tank so I put the new float on the old unit and tested the resistance to ground. I got:

Old: 10 - 78 Ohms
New: 9 - 70 Ohms

Despite this, the fuel tank always reads full unless I pull the connector off the sending unit, in which case it reads empty

any help?

>I'd prefer not to go into single-digit mileage.
That's the exact problem Quadrajets and Thermoquads solve.
The primaries are microscopic.
>>
>>17479487
Perhaps. But I'd like to do so without changing out manifolds though; it seems many of the non-stock /6 intakes are unable to use the heat from exhaust manifold.
>>
>>17479497
a higher compression ratio will invalidate the choke stove anyway. In my experience a slant six defies the odds and can manage to keep itself running even without a choke (mine).
>>
>>17479497
also, even though it may not be your thing, the Dutra Dual manifolds are easily the best $/hp ratio bolt on.
Is yours a 1 barrel? They pretty much run out of steam at about 4k rpm. A super six intake with a BBD will let it breathe a lot better but that ultimately just changed the bottleneck to the exhaust.
>>
>>17479517
I never mentioned choke, but okay. I already knew that though, since the choke linkage doesn't work right on the BBD. (I have to nudge it up a little bit before it clicks in place....like the rod from the manifold is trying to push the axle the wrong way before I nudge it)

So you say thermoquad and quadrajet are good choice for a 4v that has decent milage on a light throttle?
>>
>>17479112
That's really nice

Did you build that ?
>>
>>17479553
My car is a Plymouth Valiant. From the factory, they never had anything bigger than a 1v if you got the slant 6. However, a previous owner of my car added the "Super Six" 2v manifold + Carter BBD from a 78 Aspen.
>>
>>17479570
>(I have to nudge it up a little bit before it clicks in place....like the rod from the manifold is trying to push the axle the wrong way before I nudge it)
Is your BBD from a 318?

>So you say thermoquad and quadrajet are good choice for a 4v that has decent milage on a light throttle?
Yes they were designed to be good on mileage with a light foot and then have all the power you need when you open the secondaries. They both have an air door mechanism which shoves the air square down the venturi. Because of their teeny little primaries they can actually be made to work on smaller engines fairly well.

>>17479578
>However, a previous owner of my car added the "Super Six" 2v manifold + Carter BBD from a 78 Aspen.
Yeah that's hands down the most popular upgrade for a Slant Six.

I don't know. Here's a pic, maybe you can tell from numbers. But yeah, as you can see, the choke needs to rotate clockwise from this view, but the rod it trying to push it forward.

As for the aforementioned 4v's, which would be better? A 4v intake wouldn't have as much carb size variation as a 2v would, (ie BBD much smaller than say a 500cfm Holley) would it?
>>
>>17479487
Quadrajet and 4Jet aren't the same carb
>>
>>17479699
They both have very small primaries though, that was his point.

Also, the Thermoquad and Quadrajets both seem to be huge cfm--like 800+. Isn't that a bit much for a 225ci engine, or do the small primaries offset that?

Posted before. I bought this bitch pretty much as she sits, unrestored with a 425 oldsmobile big block, turbo 400 trans, and 12 bolt posi rear with 3.73 gears. No real body rust, entire undecarriage has been undercoated, looks good, but who really knows what that rubber shit is really hiding. All in all I think she's perfect for a frame-on restoration. Maybe a frame off, but I have neither the time or money for that.

Need to do

.Replace valve cover gaskets
.Find out why and where its leaking fucking coolant from
.Plugs and wires

Want to do
.Traction bars for the horrible wheel hop
.Rear coilover suspension
.All black interior swap with leather buckets from procar.
.Torqstorm single supercharger kit.

Thinking about having it tubbed, but Im on the fence about that simply because the bed is in great shape and rust free.

I'm trying to pick out a clutch for a one piece rear main Chevy 350 (LT1) with a Super T-10 4 speed trans and was gonna go with a RAM HDX but it looks like they have two that would fit, I can't see any difference between them. One says it's for an 82-92 Camaro and the other for a 71-84 Corvette/Firebird/GTO. I know GM has used the same pressure plate bolt pattern on all their 10.5 inch clutches. Emailed RAM to ask but idk when I'll hear back from them.

I know that feel.

When I bought the International I got the guyt o come down to $3500 from $4000.

Earlier that week I found a sweet 87 Chevy, beautiful paint, short stepside bed, 4 speed. They had started at 5k, and over time had come down to 4k. I never called because I didn't figure they'd go lower.

The day I brought the IH back from Pennsylvania, they relisted the Chevy for $3500.

Don't get me wrong, I like the International. But that Chevy was in Maine, and was in a lot better condition. I learned my lesson though.

The small primaries are okay for smaller engines. It might still be too much carb though but the great thing about these carbs is they can be tuned into or out of oblivion, depending on application.

You'd need to do a full performance build for it to be a decent carb on a 225 though.

>>17479632
You can't tell solely from the tag but chances are you do, the choke rod not lining up is a symptom of a 318 BBD on a 225. It'll still work fine as far as running though. I would switch to electric choke if it was possible.

Well the engine is stock, internally. To be honest I'm on the line with whether to upgrade other areas like cylinder heads and such, or just find a 318 to put in....then again, the latter would need other things changed too like transmission and differential (7.25 rear, )
>>
>>17484224
a built 225 is more interesting then a 318 2bh. Not telling you what to do but there's a lot of hidden power in a 225.
>>
>>17484279
I see. Well I'm not likely to break a 7.25 rear with the six anyway, so perhaps I'll do that then.
>>
>>17484323
If you ever get the budget you should really consider an 8 3/4 rear end, you can just swap ratios willy nilly once you get practiced and it'll let you intentionally blow up a 7 1/4 with a sikk burnout. Your choice, though, if it's mild a 7 1/4 will live forever. i'm not trying to convince you of anything btw.

I thought A-body 8.75s were narrower than the others and were only available in small (5x4") bolt pattern? If I change the rear, I'm getting one in 5x4.5" so I don't have to carry two spares... And 8.25 would prob be easier to find anyway.
>>
>>17484424
They are narrower.
Since it's THE Mopar rear end you can get one in any combination you want, new or used.
I know of at least two companies that make them new.
>>
>>17484470
Yes, but surely the cheaper 8.25 would be adequate for a slant 6, even a built one?
>>
>>17484488
Yes it will and it'll probably last forever. the main downside is just that the 8 3/4 is the only rear end with a swappable gear or easily swappable i should say and iirc it's the only OEM 2wd unit. Not 100% about that one though.

>>17484499
I think I'll just go with this. It's a decent upgrade, but without being one of those "need to replace manifolds, exhaust, cyl heads, cams, etc to get good use" things. I was told that I could message the seller for a /6 version. http://www.ebay.com/itm/322576020670?rmvSB=true

Since that's for a 318 you may need to fabricate a rod for the choke, or bend something, that's not too hard.

Not to be a debbie downer or something but i would caution against remanufactured carbs. I bought a reman BBD and it turns out the accelerator pump linkage has just a microscopic amount of slack so my 225 hiccups whenever you lay on the gas. I've tried adjusting it every which way but the only way to fix it is to rebuild the whole AP linkage.
>>
>>17484771
Well it says you can get it with electric choke. And the BBD I already have is confirmed for V-8 version so I'm driving without choke anyway.
>>
>>17484795
Fair enough, it's likely not such a pain in the ass to rebuild as a BBD either.

I'm not even surprised by that sound anymore, also fuck shorty headers
