I've only bought a couple cars new. Kia was a fucking breeze. It was like I walked in and handed them my card, now I have new car. Dodge was a little sloppy and the process took longer, but they were ok. I custom ordered the car and they said it would take 3-12 weeks for it to come in. Took 5 weeks to come in. They didn't completely have their shit together but it was good enough.

>be me 2015

I sold cars and was in sevice depts for several dealerships for about 6yrs from 2003-2008.
Some of my favorite times was getting rid of the roaches on the lot on our sub-credit lot

One day girl drives up in whats left of a suzuki swift
Im next up
Talk to her says she wants a suv take her to closest one its a explorer
She asks about payment i say 300 of top of my head cause it dont matter i just wanted to see what kind of reaction i would get.
Ohh no she says.... Then she sees our black Navigator fully loaded and its got less than 25k on the dial
She knows its out of her league but she goes around it and asks what kind of gas milage does this get?
Straight up tell her"miss this is a luxury vehicle and if you care milage then this suv isnt for you"
She is stunned then of course offended and asks for my manager is say "ok"
Get my fellow salesman tell him whats up he goes along with it 2hrs later he sells her a aztek for all the money and i get half the comission
I lol'd
>>
Another one just cause i miss LPG
Short and sweet:
See guy walk in to lot from far east end
Walk to him say hello how can i help he says no
Follow him ten steps "hello what can i help you find today sir?"... No response
Follow him about 2 car lengths behind wait for him to turn around
He does and says "can i just look around without anyone helping me?"
I say "No"
He walks off the lot back to his car and never seen again
Felt good
Never said i was the best salesman
>>
>>17453036
My last experience buying a car at a dealership went pretty well:
>salesman picks me up at the airport
>arrive at the dealership
>car is waiting outside
>immediately go for a test drive
>salesman directs me to local back roads
>tells me there are no cops and to go ahead and open it up
>go way, way faster than most dealers care to allow
>salesman is cool, we tear through a few more back roads for a bit
>head back and sign some paperwork
>drive car home

It depends what you are trying to haggle. If you're going for civics then you won't have much luck. They might knock a few grand off, but that's it.
>>
>>17453919
Sounds like a you were buying a higher end car? Usually dealerships will go above and beyond for people who are buying higher end or expensive cars. I bought a Hellcat last year and my salesmen drove us about 10 miles away from the dealership to a large industrial area with no traffic. He stopped the car, pulled out the red key, and told me to go wild.

The new & used car 'lifers' made decent money but at the cost of divorces and heart attacks. Finance too. The 8-a-month new car salesmen think they're the hottest shit (after being fed by the sales manager at first) but get BTFO and end up selling Darts.

Then dont bitch when we say "you can test the V6 because if we let every retard test the V8's they would have hundreds of miles on them"
>>
>>17456894
They aren't even close to the same.

The v6 has weaker brakes, cheaper suspension, lower spec cooling system and a cheaper driveline.
>>
>>17456906
And this is why a lot of people don't really like car salesmen that much - you don't even know the product you're selling and you get in the way without really adding any value in return.
>>
>>17456906
Then give us 100 bucks non-refundable, but if you decide to buy it will go towards the purchase of the car. Thats fair for wasting my time and putting miles on the v8
>>
>>17456894
ever heard of the concept of a demonstration car?
get one V8 and let people test drive it, regularly check everything so it stays as new and you are fine
if anyone is a bitch it's you guys
>>
>>17456920
>100 dollar non-refundable deposit to try a car you night not like
"No"

If you don't that most people are not buying them after the test ride, then it's your fault for not closing them better. Git gud.
>>
>>17456922
That not only wastes money on our part, it meaans every 18 year old white kid is going to show uo the day he gets his license to test drive. Look like I have already said its not chevy, its you people who are the problem. Im sure Ford doesn't allow test drives of their V8s
>>
>>17456937
you can still say no to 18yo kids with fresh licenses, dickhead
get some balls, my god
but you don't need to lie about test drives anymore

and why would it be wasted money
first you get way better chances on actually selling a car
second you can still sell the car later on when it has like 5k or 10k or whatever miles with a reduced price and still make a huge profit out of it

your post just showed me that the concept of a demonstration car is new to you
what a fucking shitty dealer you must be

Why should we let you test a car, possible damage it or wreck it, that you are more than likely unable and unwilling to buy? I also sold Chevy for about a decade. The guys actually buying the V8s either dont need a test drive or they get all the numbers worked out satisfactorily first and test drive while finance is printing up the deal.

We know you children are not buying, you dont work for Car and Driver doing a review, and we don't owe you anything. Its our merchandise. It will be handled and operated at our prerogative. If you don't like it, tough shit. Customers are hardly ever right. You don't get to use and abuse our vehicles if you are not willing and able to pay for it. No free fun. Hit the bricks pal.
>>
>>17456952
Its not new to me and I dont own the dealership, I simply work there and that being said I understand why my boss dont want to blow 40k on a demonstration car so assholes who dont buy can ring up miles. Im actually going to bring uo the 100 dollar idea to my boss tomorrow
>>
>>17456906
You can get, and we have the V6 model with the Brembo brakes and all that other shit. People who never sold cars having opinions about how cars are sold. Hilarious.
>>
>>17456955
Most people dont know we get the cars with only a few miles on them at most so the 80 mile thing was a smart play on the dealers part
>>
>>17456955
Exactly. The people who actually buy the v8 models dont want one with all the boy racer jack off test drive miles. They don't even really need a test drive. You have to convince some of them to do it.

And that's why we don't worry what you sub-prime cape entitled cum stains think about your rights to test drive our property. We care about the likes and opinions of real buyers.

Hold on to your anus. Dont let anyone jump on your deals. Find a manager who is willing to close for you without making you half the deal to the house. Learn every damn thing about the trucks, especially the HDs and the tow and trailer ratings, I mean learn the name of the fucker bolting it together. Everything. Trucks is where there's money, and that will be your bread and butter. Dont bother talking to people in the show room looking at the vette or the camero unless they are older. You are not ready to sell that yet. Be nice to them l, give them a card. Smooze them to death. Old people can be great customers if they like you. Ask about peoples jobs casually but quickly up front. There's like a million things I want to tell you about selling Chevy.

I work at a used car dealership and all our cars are fairly close together and crammed in, as a result, i personally don't like to take out a car all the way in the corner moving 15-20 cars just for a person who is "just looking". unless you're a serious buyer with cash in hand, or have a great credit score im not moving the fucking cars dipshit. 80% of people that come on the lot have horrible credit/ shitty down payment (mostly niggers). Not to mention all of our cars are inspected and driven beforehand so we arent going to sell you a shitbox that isnt working. Not only that but we also give a free warranty where we cover 100% of the issues.
>>
>>17457029
>a car repaired by insurance is still going to have an accident on it. We have to disclose that in our state. That knocks at least 3-4 grand off the value. We were already standing to make a gross profit of 1-3k on a v8 car. That means of you wreck it, and we fix it, we can make zero/wash out on it or worse loose money of it sits around forever and we have to whore it just to clear the sheet. You are saying we should risk loosing money for your fun. Moron.

I think you're forgetting we're in America where people do two retarded things. BTFO there dti, and continuously roll debt into a new loan. You have no idea how often I see a guy trying to refi his 42k Silverado when he works at a gas station and grosses 32k a year.

>>17457052
It doesn't matter. THIS ISN'T GRAN TURISMO. We are not in the business of teaching children what different sized brakes feels like. They can wack off at home imaging it. When they are grown up and have the money they can buy it and find out. Trust me, we can tell.

If you go fast, you want to be able to turn and stop. But you wouldn't know that of course.

Have you considered moving to a Dodge dealership? The challenger seems more like your attitude
>>
>>17457095
I can't close a kid with no money, nobody can. I don't test drive them in v6s. either. If they really have to jack me off and live out thier wildest dreams they can do it in a v6. And if they show the slightest bit of recklessness test drive is over, instantly. Sometimes they don't even make it to the first light. Saves me alot of time. We have thier license and they go on a no drive list we keep on the managers desk. But by now we know all these backwards hat fags by sight.
>>
I actually just bought a car with my mom along to sign the loan and title. My mom decides to take it for a test drive and promptly stalls it so bad the battery dies. The mechanic brings it back to figure out what the problem was and he tells my mom. Now my mom will not accept that her driving is bad (the reason she was doing the test drive instead of me was so that she could show me the fundamentals of manuals), so she huffs and puffs and says that we're not buying the car and this and that and the other thing. Well, the dealership lady decides that even if we won't drive the car, I should at least learn how to drive stick from someone who knows how to do so, so she drives me to a parking lot and gives me some pointers and I drive back. I then do a test drive with my mom and convinced her to buy the car with me. All in all, pretty great dealership experience.
>>
>>17457120

>>
>>17457132

>>17457118

That's a different guy. I have sold more vettes than v8 camaros. Corvette gets more attention, on the floor but the shit stains know better than to even ask. They spend all day drooling on camaros so I don't deal with camaro customers unless they are old.

When is the best time to buy a car? Currently looking to get a GTI but dealerships won't go under 20k even though the new model is around the corner
>>
>>17457194
You can sell cars to people with bad credit, this is Chevy. The key is make them excited about the huge upgrade, and yes a 2017 Sonic or Cruze with its tech and features is a huge upgrade over thier 2001 dodge neon. They will be so excited they will want the car as much as you want the deal. That's why they swallow the 19% interest. They want ac and blutooth more than money. Just go with it. Remember everything the customer says so that later on you can bring it up as reasons they said they needed a new car. You just feed back to them thier own thoughts. It works better too if you don't say "you said you needed something bigger, or safer" or whatever but just naturally point out all the things they mentioned as if you were just remembering to tell them. "oh I wanted to show you guys how much room there isin the back seat!" "my favorite thing about these new cars is the safety features, its remarkable how safe they are for both impacts and rollover" ext.
>>
>>17457251
Last day of the month, 1 hour before they close. If they are short a deal for their sales goal you might be able to make them suck you off. Bit you have to walk in serious. "I'm here to buy a GTI, and I don't have much time."

I'm gray Abarth guy from the hot hatch thread, I've been reading about rubbing in the front suspension over bumps, something about the shock towers. Just look up "Abarth suspension noise" and you'll find a few places talking about it. That's the only real thing I've noticed is that the front end seems to make more noise going over what should be inconsequential bumps than it should.
>>
>>17457376
No memering, I was actually pretty surprised they went for it. I mean it's a no frills Wrangler, no power anything, super base minus hardtop and A/C no crazy color (black) it's base of the base. Figured I can just upgrade what I want later on. And I have, still spent less than if I got it configured and Jiat.

I plan on buying a c7 or zl1 early 2019 probably. 15k down and my credit is excellent. It was over 800 but I bought a house a year ago. i should still get prime rates though. The actual process of making decisions is one every single person on the planet WRONGLY thinks he's good at.
And if somebody where to ask "how do you pick a car?" any person with a somewhat reasonable answer has already thought of it more in order to answer that question than they think about their own decision making process when they should.
A good salesman will use this lack of preparation to form a solid story why his car X is definitely the best option available to the buyer. Once this 'solution' becomes apparent to the buyer a deal is inevitable.
Because the deal is based on the buyers problem. Which the salesman has conveniently helped describe and magically fits the solution.

I own my own body shop.

Not long ago I started offering detailing, with many of my customers being local dealership owners who send in both brand new and used cars to get cleaned up for the lot. So I've dealt with loads of different dealers.
Now this isn't against the cars or the brands themselves, more or less what dealerships to avoid if you are buying a car.

>Dodge

Usually ran by fat, old, angry, divorcees. Most of their tactics are geared towards the "working man", baby boomers looking for a Challenger, or teenagers who buy big diesel pickups with their parent's money.

Usually have the worst experience with Dodge dealerships.

>Chevy/GM

Usually ran by middle aged men who swear up and down the Silverado and Sierra are God's gift to the world. Very picky over who test drives what. Theyre usually pretty chilled out and laid back. Most GM dealerships are extremely bureaucratic and take a while to do business with because of it. (Or it could be the dumbass, soccer mom, secretary that works at every fucking GM dealership).

I like doing business with them mainly because they're usually not operated by total assholes like most dealerships.

>Honda / Toyota

Honda and Toyota dealerships operate basically the aame

Both make me feel like I'm doing business with the Apple store,
Both seemed to be ran by nerdy, weird, types you wouldnt expect to know dick about cars (but they do), and both are geared towards customers looking for high mpg or the likes. You don't see either dealerships really pushing their sporty or performance stock.

Don't mind dealing with either but they both seemed to be ran by Jews. (Asking for a dealership discount, even though they already get a dealership discount.)

Will type more in a bit.

this is patently false. IF this was remotely the case new car sales wouldn't be in the shitter. Ancedotal experience:
I thought I wanted a WRX, went to look at Subaru and when he asked I just told the salesman I dunno everyone I've asked who has one loves it" test drove it, heard his speil why its such a better car than the others I'm looking at, left to see the others and never returned. Same thing happened for at VW. If I drive it and don't want to buy it immediately after then I'm going to check out the other one I think I want even if i don't have any type of resonable process of thinking that other than I like the way it looks and I like the specs.

I told them I was interested in buying one so they said they would see what they could do, aka they went to do a quick credit check. Because the AmEx customer service is so legendary you can dispute even buying a car and they will withhold the funds from the dealer and take your side. this happens in my service department all the time. I don't have a personal story but my dad has experienced some shit since he is hispanic.
**Note: my father is a step down from a CEO and makes nearly 400k a year.**

>My parents need a car to replace the old Mercury Montego we had that was my first car and sort of the mule
>Dad already leases a Mercedes so though he would go ahead and buy either a mercedes or audi suv that we will keep for 7-10 years (till he retires)
>He and my mother go to the local Audi dealership because they have a 2012 Mercedes SUV for like 25k and if not he will just outright buy a brand new Q5.
>dude at dealership basically ZOOMs into the Merc because of my dads brown skin
>Proceeds to not take any hints when my dad's interest shifts to a Q5.
>Emphasizes the Q5 is nearly 35k more and probably not in his budget
>Dad ignores him and says he will give him 20k cash for the mercedes
>dude emphasizes how the benz only had one owner and he couldn't let it go for less than the asking price
>does this for an hour, apparently jabs the occasional remark questioning my parents financial status
>finally dad just says fuck it and gets up
>mentions he really wanted a Q5 as he was leaving and told the guy to call him if he wants to sell him a Q5.
>fast forward 2 days, guy never calls
>Dad goes to Ford dealership
>fully loaded explorer is what he says he wants, guy on lot has 2.
>no bullshit this time since my dad straight up said whatever happens here today will be outright cash
>Ford dude tells him to ignore the twin turbo version since it is 10k more, takes premium gas, and has zero features extra (same mpgs too)
>Dad loves the Ford (had one as a sales car a few years back)
>Buys it with cash and we drove it to detroit the next day.

I think the biggest mistake a dealership salesman can make is to judge people on race or appearance.

People like my dad make loads of cash but don't present themselves as such out side of work.
Doesn't mean he doesn't have the ability to drop 37 gran without blinking

I've only gone to two dealerships and every time they run my credit they ignore whatever used car I came to look at and pushed me hard to buy a new one.

Took me 20 minutes to get the keys back to my beater the 2nd time and I haven't gone to a dealer since then.

Maybe when I'm in my 30's I'll have the courage to assert what I want at these places. Though I've heard most salesman get sketched out when younger guys want to test a stick FRS or Camaro.
>>
>>17478862

>>
>>17478884

>>
>>17478862
>Took me 20 minutes to get the keys back
They steal your keys? What the fuck? No dealership here does that, although one shut me in a car and then blocked the door to persuade me to lease it instead of financing a cheaper one.

The dealership I ended up buying from gave me a test drive on the first car I had my eye on, straight away, no checks or handing in of keys, even though I said I was just checking out cars to decide which one I wanted. Then apologised for not having had it cleaned yet.
When I went back, they'd sold the one I'd driven, but gave me a test drive on a slightly newer and slightly more expensive one. Without any hard-sell tactic.
>>
>>17478916
It's a common tactic if you're going to be trading it in. They'll need the keys to "inspect" it. Best thing to do if you got the time, is to tell them no to trading it in and sell it on craigslist later. And keep the keys. Or change your mind about the trade in after you're serious you want the car they're selling you.
>>
In fact, if you're going to trade it in, that's what I recommend - tell the showroom salesguy that you're not trading it in and wait until you meet the backroom guy who runs all the numbers, that you've changed your mind and you do want to trade it in. That way they can't play key hostage with you.
>>
Do dealerships prefer when you take out a loan, or do they want you to pay cash?

>>
>>17479060
Follow up, do the loans have prepayment penalties? And would (most) dealerships be more willing to cut the price if you offered to take out a loan instead of paying cash?

Or is this too obvious lol, just take out loan for less money than you would have spent cash and immediately pay it off

>>
>>17479081
You betcha! If you finance it through the dealer, they will get ALL the interest earned, up front before the principal starts getting paid off. Always finance with your bank or credit union when you can, only resort to dealer financing if you have no other choice.
>>
>>17478916
>>17478936
lpg said dont even mention you have a trade in till you negotiate a price on the car you want
makes sense
>>
>>17479123
They will ask you pretty early on if you're trading in that car you drove there in. It's not so much about not mentioning it as it is about telling them no.

There's a game of 20 questions he'll start playing with you. He'll want to find an excuse to steal your keys, he'll want to know how serious you are and he'll want to know how much money you make. And he can't come right out and ask those things, and that's where the 20 questions comes in. The competent ones, you'll only pick up on it after the 5th question or so, the really good ones you won't know until they're done asking.

Was this recent?
Since more and more social media is coming out where you can check up on dealerships, it seems suicide to do this. My friends dad took his Honda to a dealership for an oil change and they overfilled the oil and left a fucking mess all over the engine compartment. They cleaned it up but he left a bad review for them on Yelp. Two days later the owner contacted him and gave him a free oil change on his next tune up as well as a free detail.

Yeah, agreed. I'd be a little less pejorative and say that time is money. You'll make more money selling it yourself, but it will take more time too. And you'll have to deal with all the lookie loos that someone else would have to deal with. Which will waste your time. Time or money, your choice.

So much this. Part of me is excited to be nearing a time when I can afford to purchase a new car, yet I'm also painfully aware of how potentially awful the experience might be. Knowing I'm going to have to lie in order not to get screwed.

If I say I won't be making a down payment or that it will be only a couple grand then I'm more likely to get a reasonable deal overall I would think. Assuming they commit to a price before I actually mention that I'm actually gonna put more than 10 grand down.

On the other hand if I tell them right off the bat my plans they now know they have less opportunity to make money on the financing and as such probably won't work with me the same on the price.

If I say I'd rather not discuss a down payment amount at all until we come to an agreement it's safe to assume they will know I plan on making a hefty dp. Like how does one not get fucked in this scenario. Ugh.

it was new (10 miles or so)
I went there knowing way more about the car than the salesman
I went there being 90% convinced they can't offer what I wanted for the old one
I just wanted to make sure about that, to show the car to my wife and get an out the door price

Later that day we went to another dealership (to look at another make/model) and the sales tactic was irritating
I start the conversation just like at the first dealership

>here's my old car, what's the most you can offer me?
>what's the lowest out the door for this particular make and model?
>I don't care about test driving (I had test drove that car before)

but anon, you can't get more for your car than our offer
but anon, why don't you consider this other model?
but anon, we're losing money if we sell you this car at this price, we do this just to draw business to the repair shop

FUCK OFF!

Keep in mind, the dealer might try to show you an invoice and tell you they won't make money on the deal or are losing money. They get dealer holdbacks so they are lying to you. I had a dealer show me the invoice and tell me he was losing a grand I'm the deal. I laughed and he got offended. He tried telling me he should keep my down payment (I had the car ordered) so I called up American express who did a charge back lol always use credit when they ask for money to order or hold something. Cash means you need to sue if they feel they should keep the money
