Germans used to have their shit together about functional interiors.
The end of this era was the end of the bmw e39 run. At this point, bmw went all techno-gimmick with Idrive on that twrrible 2002 745. mercedes Benz also started feminizing their interiors at the same time. Audi did a pretty good job during this era, but still got sloppy chasing luxury and tech.
Porsche set the standard for clean, elegant, and logical layouts focused on the driver in their non-911 cars, as they were not forced to use the ancient 911 architecture.

It's a panel van / truck. If you get hit hard enough to have the items on the dash be potential hazards, you're dead anyways.
>>17454280
This is a 1984 Volkwagen Rabbit GTI (the USA 1983 Rabbit had a Federally mandated 0-85mph speedometer)
The small cubbyhole in the dashboard is because AC was optional and not installed in this car. I hate the red interior; the other GTI interior color was blue. The panel tilts open under the Hazard and Defroster switches, revealing an ash tray, coin holder, and cigarette lighter.
The low mounted box between dash and the shifter holds three VDO gauges: Volts, 12h-Clock, Oil Temp-F. On my GTI I swapped the location of the radio and the gauges, and installing a fourth Vacuum Manifold/Boost gauge to the right of the tachometer.
The seats were good quality for a car of it's type, inexpensive copies of a Recaro design.

>Why were 80s interiors so superior?
Cars weren't communication/infotainment oriented cluster-fucks. No steering wheel buttons for bluetooth phone integration, no touch screens that adjust the climate control and the gps nav. I miss the simplicity of adjusting the radio volume by turning a knob, instead of pressing tiny up/down buttons or a slider-control on a touch screen.
>>17455103
>OVERDRIVE
>>17454244
Objectively this.
First Gen Prius has a calming interior. Moving the speedometer/warning indicators as far forward as they could, means the drivers eye has to focus less when it shifts between the road the instruments. Having nothing immediately in front of the driver makes for fewer distractions. I cannot understand when I see cars interiors all lit up at night. I turn my night dash illumination to minimum. I don't drive using IFR, my decisions are made based on what I see on the road.

The design philosophy behind the Multipla was to make the best car from the engineering point of view.
It was easy to manufacture, squared, and could store the maximum people+weight available to the standards of the era.
As you can see the center console is flooded with all the technical process that would involve manufacturing just to keep it easy to produce.
This is what you get when you don't care about the costumer but the actual nerds designing cars.

I've always loved the 1st generation CRX interior. Very simple, everything close at hand, and surprising roomy (especially in the non-SI interiors without the console). The orange-on-black colour scheme for all the instruments and controls looked great, especially lit up at night.

The most comfy interior, car and memory, point to an old early 90s white Fiat Panda.
It was me (when I was a kid), my father and my uncle, travelling at "high" speed (70 km/h in a Panda feels fast) on open countryside roads with rice fields near us, with a splendid sunset as backgroud and with the car bouncing, all of this just to reach the next "village" to buy pizzas to bring back home for dinner.

Floor-mounted pedals are the norm in race cars and many sporty consumer cars. Historically, floor-mounted pedals made cable- and line routing in mid-engined cars much easier, and many people find it a lot easier to heel-and-toe on such a setup. Usually it's possible to obtain a higher pedal "ratio" as well, i.e. less movement in the pedal is required to go WOT or to disengage the clutch, since they are usually shorter and thereby travel less distance than a firewall-mounted setup.
Cheap, fwd economy cars usually have firewall-mounted pedals because it's easier to route cables/lines forward that way, so I can understand why the typical /o/ browser has never come across floor-mounted pedals and would perceive it as "wrong".

Gen1 Mazda 6s are pretty nifty. Those that don't come with the fold-up screen have a cubby hole in its place, the perfect place to prop up a smartphone running Maps. I really like the vents and AC controls too. On the downside, the radio buttons are spread out a bit too much and the whole aesthetic falls apart if you install an aftermarket unit.
