So long as your tires can grip, most acceleration can be had when the tires force and acceleration are at their peak which is torque peak

No that sounds like bs. Higher trim bimmers are usually the same design of engine but made of different materials, and hence allow for better redline, porting ect
>>
>>17445318
thats like saying an engine produces more power at peak torque because it has the most torque.

Torque means jack shit. Its work that we're interested in, and work has a time component (rpm) which is why max power and max acceleration will always be at a higher engine speed than peak torque

Torque relates to acceleration
This is why diesel trucks get off the line very quickly but have little get up and go once they are moving.

Torque is more important when acceleration from a standstill.
Power is more important when accelerating at speed.

Illegal in my state after the new laws July 2017 against distracted driving. The law changes include updates for use of electronics while stopped in traffic (no, you cannot), stopped at traffic light (no, you cannot), and stopped in parking lot (no you cannot). But if you are parked with your engine off at the side of the road you can. You cannot have visible video and you may not eat or drink while driving. You may not press buttons on a 3rd party GPS unit. Etcetera. Exceptions are made for emergency situations, so you may use your cellphone while driving to report an accident or criminal situation such as gun shots and drunk drivers.

I had a laptop open on my passenger seat. I did NOT touch it and it was NOT showing any video show. But a police officer pulled me over and gave me a warning that looking at it can get me a DUI type ticket the next time. My state has the usual series of DUI of which one is DUIE (Driving Under the Influence of Electronics). If you're texting, watching video, or looking at stuff on your laptop, that apparently is DUIE after July 2017 in washington state. The law also makes it mandatory for all of its violations to be reported to your insurance company. So apparently the officer will check to see if your insurance is current and contact them. If you have a fake insurance card, it's going to reveal you at this stage as having fraudulent documentation.

Well, since I have a warning on my record, I can't afford to have an officer pull me over for any electronics in the future. Or he'll give me a DUIE ticket that my insurance company will hate.

Poison ant bait traps outside the car near the tires will kill the ants off if they feed it to the queen or queens if fire ants. Darn fire ants can have multiple queens as they can make compatible super colonies.

Ants use scent to make trails. I wonder if Febreze sprayed on the ground next to tires would stop their trail making?

If you anticipate having sludge that plugs up a filter, then get a filter with metal mesh reinforcing every square inch of the filter surface (such as Fram Ultra). When plugged up, some non-reinforced filters will get a hole in the filter media. Purolators do that as mentioned at BITOG forums when people doing their own changes took apart filters and noticed blow through holes.

Power and torque are related to each other. The formula for calculating power has two variables, one is torque while the other is revolutions per minute.

You might think that one is irrelevant since the other uses/is used by the former, but you'd be wrong. Both of these figures have importance in their own context.

The simplest way I can explain it is that a minimum amount of torque is needed in order to overcome the inherent resistances to movement that are present, like inertia and friction. However, when it comes to how quickly it accelerates, that figure is affected not just by how much torque the engine produces but also how often it produces it, or horsepower.

A normal car might have 300HP and 300ft/lbs of torque. Meanwhile, a semi-tractor truck might have 300HP and 900ft/lbs of torque. The semi-tractor truck would have a much larger displacement engine than the car, but that engine wouldn't work at anywhere near the RPMs the car's engine is capable, hence the difference in torque but not horsepower. The truck needs that torque to overcome the much larger inertia of the trailer and the cargo it hauls around.

Conversely, we could have a theoretical engine that produces 10,000HP and 1ft/lb of torque by having an incredibly low displacement but revving at incredibly high speeds. If you put such an engine in a normal car and attempted to drive it, the car wouldn't move anywhere. Any time you tried to put it into gear, the engine would stall, similar to driving a manual car with a very weak engine without giving it any gas when you try to start from a full stop.

When you put a car into car and release the cluth, the speed of the engine is inherently linked to the speed of the wheels. The crankshaft cannot turn if the wheels cannot turn, or if the wheels cannot BE turned. With such a mismatched engine, the wheels cannot be turned, because each individual combustion in the engine is too weak to overcome the forces resisting movement.
>>
>>17447121
If the engine can't cause the wheels to turn, that means the crankshaft in the engine doesn't turn because the crankshaft is linked to the wheels via the transmission and driveshaft. This causes that piston that just had ignition to stop in place and never get another opportunity to fire.

That's why you need a minimum amount of torque. If you have enough torque to make the vehicle move in its current state, any more torque, without any change in horsepower, provides no benefit. Horsepower is what decides how quickly the vehicle can accelerate once the torque minimum is satisfied.

There is one advantage a higher torque engine has over another engine with the same horsepower. The higher torque engine could reach higher top speeds, since the extra torque will allow it to overcome the wind resistance that grows as speed grows.

The not-technically-accurate-but-easy-to-understand explanation is that torque is the force pushing the vehicle forward and horsepower is torque applied over time, which is affected by how often those pushes occur, as in revolutions per minute.

I've got a bear of a problem that I can't figure out.

Background: I've had the car (2002 Mazda Protege5) 3 years, a year and a half ago approximately the drivers side wheel came off going about 60 km/hr. Surprisingly, after putting the wheel back on the car drove fine. Nothing seemed to be a problem. No work was done at the time.

The last 3-6 months, the car has developed the most ungodly wobble going over bumps or around turns especially above 60 km/hr. Going dead straight, the car pulls a bit (right I believe). It has definitely continued to get worse since I first noticed it.

I jacked up the car by the frame and wiggle tested the wheel. The driver's side front has a lot of play from left to right but none top to bottom; the passenger side is tight.

My immediate thought was the tie rods, but I can't feel or see any play in them or anywhere really except when I grab the wheel or rotor to check for play. That leads me to think it's the wheel bearing, but shouldn't it wobble in every direction then instead of just left right?

Can anybody steer me straight on this?

Idk if that car is fwd or not but if it is check your axle for play and make sure the axlenut is on tighter than the asshole of a passenger on the plane that flew into the twin towers.

Obviously check the lugs too, make sure the threads arnt stripped or anything. ANY sign of wear = replace. Lugs are like a dollar or two, studs are as well, any idiot with a hammer + open ended lug can remove/replace them.

If you do indeed replace your suspension/steering crap, do the other side as well.

>>
>>17447502

Nope. But you will usually get some sort of warranty with it which is good enough depending on the conditions on the contact. Buying a car from a private seller means you have a chance of getting screwed, maybe a little, maybe totally fecked m8. Buying a car from a dealer is a 100% garantee that you are being screwed; you just know from the beginning just how bad so theres not really any surprises.

If you are competent, buy private. If you dont know what youre looking for, buy from a dealer.
>>
>>17447448
The thing that still bothers me though is that there was no issues for a full year afterwards. And yeah the lugs and that are all good / taken care of. I'm also trying to avoid changing everything out as the car was only $1900 when I got it three years ago and replacing too much might make it more viable to sell / junk it.
>>
>>17447375

>>
>>17447542

Well you can get all that shit BNIB off of rock auto or some shit for less than $100 per side, and just rent the specialty tools from autozone for free. Theres nothing to it.

How did the wheel come off? Did the lugs come off? Studs break? Axle nut fly off? Like what failed to allow that to happen? Im not really seeing how your wheel can come off while driving without you learning what caused it.

Tierod is probably not it. Tierod failure means you turn and suddenly your wheel goes sideways and gets jammed under your car. Balljoint generally would mean your wheel does that except vertical, think ricerfag cars with extreme canter from being slammed. Bearing seems most likely, or axle nut coming lose.

Do you ever notice noise? Like any humming, grinding, droning, whirring? Anything? If so, at what speeds? Any speed? Only slow or only fast? Only when making left turns or when making right turns? Bearings tend to be really noisy when they start to go.

Again, you should probably just replace all that shit. Drop 200$ on parts and a fat case of your favorite beer, do everything on both sides in an afternoon or over a weekend if you drag your ass, and be done. Youll feel a lot better about all of this and not have to worry about your shit breaking.

>How did the wheel come off?
I'm pretty sure the wheels weren't torqued up right after they were changed over from summers to winters as it fell off the next day. That or the local high schoolers loosened them, it wouldn't be the first time. No wear at all on the lugs or studs. 1 lug wasn't recovered, the other 4 were within a 4 foot circle so the fell off pretty much immediately.

No noise unless I'm going over a bump then I get a thud thud thud sort of sound. I can't seem to hear it any other time. Wheel wobble is in the turn and over bumps. Wobble is significantly worse making right turns.

I think you might be right about replacing it all though, I just wish Canadian part pricing was better

Conversely, if you are even entering the merge and a car in your lane just went through in front of you, you yield to the next lane over. You zipper in one lane, then the other, then your lane again, then his lane. So essentially ots not about your car or his, its about the zipper action of the cars directly in front of you.

Now, If there were no cars at all in front of either of you than whosever nose is in front as you enter the merge is first. That's just rules of the asphalt jungle.
>>
>>17447936
Why is it a 2 lane roundabout if all the lanes are 1 lane. They shouldn't have moved, you had right of way.
>>
>>17447936
If you are the red arrow you are driving like an Asian woman nigger (if such a monster existed).

You should be merging into the outside lanes before you get to the exit you want.

The outside lane is the exit lane. The position you are in at time stamp 5 is for going around to another exit. You should be getting into the exit (green lane) between points 2 and 4.

>Power relates to speed
>Torque relates to acceleration
>This is why diesel trucks get off the line very quickly but have little get up and go once they are moving.

No, diesel trucks with get going quickly because they are making more power at the launch RPM. The only torque that matters is wheel torque and that is a factor of engine power and gearing not engine torque.

Take 2 engines one making 100hp at 1000rpm and one making 100hp at 6000rpm both are geared to be at peak power at the same road speed. Tell me what has more torque at the wheels? In identical cars who would be accelerating faster?

Torque when you're talking about engines is not rotational force, you idiot. Torque in this context is how much energy is produced on each power stroke. Energy (joules) happens to have the same units as torque (Newton meters) so people call it that erroneously.
How much energy you're producing each power stroke, combined with how many power strokes per second your engine is running (rpm), makes energy per second (watts or horsepower).
Change in velocity (or acceleration) depends on change in kinetic energy (how much energy from the engine is being converted into kinetic energy each unit of time, or essentially the wattage of the engine). Therefore acceleration depends on power output, not "torque".
What's really sad is that all this is at the level of a basic high school level physics class and still nobody understands it.

Seems like mine has had lots of little problems costing 1-2k every year or two.
>>
>>17450011
torque to the wheels is what accelerates you. when accelerating in a single gear, the curve you will feel (as in acceleration) will mirror the torque curve. Power determines the magnitude of the torque curve in a given gear, at a given rate of speed. A lower powered engine can make the same torque as a similar higher powered engine, it just can't produce the same amount of torque as high up in mph as the higher powered one.

understanding what "power determines the magnitude of the torque curve in a given gear ratio, at a given rate of speed" means is key to understanding power and its affect on acceleration.

>>17450318

>>
>>17444851
He's right.

In a fixed gear, with a fixed gearing ratio.

However, if you have the possibility to downshift, for example go from 4th @ 6200 rpm to 3rd @ 8000 rpm, your acceleration will be max in the gear with the highest power output.

So if you're climbing a gear, starting from 4000 rpm, you always want to shift as late as possible, BUT your highest acceleration (of that gear) will be where you reach peak torque.

>>17444839
>>17444868
The work that needs to be done to accelerate increases with speed. It takes 3 times as much energy to go from 100 to 200 than it does to go from 0 to 100. (and that is without taking drag in account!)

What does it take to convert an automatic car from the early 80s to a manual?
>>
>>17450491
Park a manual donor vehicle of same make/model/year/engine next to it.

Remove everything automatic. Install everything manual. I used to do this in either direction at a used car lot where we assembled vehicles from donors. It's tedious and may require completely removing the dashboard and swapping out wiring harnesses so we mostly did it with SUVs to make more money, but you can do it with cars.

You'd better have something else to drive and research the SPECIFIC vehicle you are interested in on VEHICLE SPECIFIC FORUMS. You have many hours of study ahead of you before you turn a wrench.

A quarter-inch drive SIX POINT metric socket set with long extensions and a universal is vital to do dash R&I.

How badly do you want a manual?

Why does my new car have so little engine braking compared to my old car? There is a certain ratio when the battery is fully charged. Back when more people serviced their own batteries, I remember even my local Safeway supermarket sold bottles of battery acid. But nowadays, everything that is possibly dangerous has been hidden away or is no longer sold except to shops and licensed individuals.

When did the general population become too scary and violent to stop allowing so many things to be sold in stores? Diversity is not always so good. Various countries find their social problems increase. General violence increases. Crime and vandalism increases.

It normally isn't necessary, but as someone else said in >>17452522 , it is dialectric grease. Most modern fuse boxes are well-sealed and assumed to be opened with fuses removed and replaced in a clean environment. But some car manufacturers can expect certain cars to go overland, rally, or other moist-air conditions, so they add dialectric grease to stop contacts from corroding for people who do open fuse boxes in those environments.

If you don't have cones, chalk some lines on the ground and put some cardboard boxes there. If you hit the box, it will move it away from the chalked line. That way, you know if you hit or not. Of course, you can use chalk with cones too.

I prefer the cardboard box method. You can hit a cone, but if you don't go far enough to tip the cone over, you'll still not know that you went too far. I used boxes and chalk to practice my parallel parking before the driver license exam. To prevent curb rash, I parked in front of the driveway because there is naturally no curb there. But if your street is one of those with sloped curbs, then you can easily practice anywhere there.

How do you guys trust a roll cage with your life?

I'd like to get into rally, but I'm scared of dying or seriously injuring myself if the car rolls over. There are cars on Craiglist with roll cages already but im still hesitant.

I know that my confidence would increase if I knew that the weld job was good. So that's the first thing I'm checking.

Listen to this guy. You'll have repairs more expensive than the car.
Just go and compare basic stuff like control arm prices and alternators from shitboxes or domestic cars to BMW parts.
2 or 3x plus the stupid tax mechanics charge you for "muh exotic repairs".
>>
>>17459509
Depends on $ of course, but if you have a full history and you see stuff like control arms have been replaced, shocks, alternator (would b nice), then you're probably set for 50k miles barring anything else major.
All depends on the car, though. If it's a civic shitbox or something else known to be reliable, I'd be ok with it. Just hope the transmission doesn't shit a brick.

>Where do I find 14-inch tires
If they are manufactured, then any tire store can order them from a distributor. Now, some stores only carry certain brands on the retail floor because of discounting deals they have with those brands. But they might (or might not) order other brands for you. So you may have to go to several different tire shop franchises in your town. Or at least go to costco and sam's club if you are a member of those warehouse shopping clubs. They order from large distributors basically any major brand they are comfortable giving their warranty to.

Swapping the Transmission and driveshaft isn't that hard, the par that is a bitch is fitting the pedal box, pulling interior trim, and making holes for the master cylinder if it didn't come prepped for them from the factory.

What model transmission is it? Is it something that came on other vehicles? Companies like Getrag and ZF typically supplied the same transmission to multiple companies. You'll also need to source the slave, and master cylinders, driveshaft, and probably the most difficult, a pedal box for the car.

>acceleration depends on wheel torque
'no'
OP's engine makes 143 lb ft of torque, max. That's a turning force applied, eventually, to the wheels. Horsepower is calculated as a rate at which torque is applied. Horsepower is basically "torques applied per minute". Obviously more is better.

I could put a breaker bar on the lug nut of your car and apply 143 lb ft of force, but it's not going to do a burn out.

But your posted description said it was a 1990 Eagle Talon with a worn engine. So oil consumption for that is natural. And because catalytic converters do work, that covers up any blue smoke unless you're gunning the engine or the cat is either worn out or the catalyst was contaminated by bad fuel.

Moving peak torque higher in the rpm range gives you a higher max horsepower. They go hand in hand, I don't know why people try to split them. Sure you could just build an F1 engine with low torque that spins at 20,000 rpm, but your 60 foot times are going to be abysmal. Or you could have a dump truck diesel pin you to the back seat on launch, but you'll struggle to to pass vehicles once you're already going.

do drill slotted rotors really do give better stopping power? i want to put some on my DD. i need new brakes/rotors. i saw a whole set for my car from rockauto for like 250$ which doesnt seem bad. or should i just go to autozone and buy them there?
>>
>>17468662
No. Drilled/slotted is a meme. The slots help with water evacuation and the drilled holes help with cooling, but at the expense of pad life, being much more susceptible to cracking and warping, and you can't resurface them.

If it's your DD don't bother, regular rotors will do just fine.

Probably time for some new brakes no? They don't squeak, except for the front right but it only squeaks when not braking. Pretty sure it is a warped rotor or something on that side. Squeak goes away the second you brake.

Also with new brakes would that mean all that new fluid i put in will get pushed out/overflow(or explode the res if you left it capped) out of the reservoir as it needs less fluid to?

Yes, having more pad and rotor material will push the caliper pistons back in some and require less fluid in the system. When you change them you'll want to suck the reservoir down to the min line, do one axle, and suck it back down to the min line again for the other axle, top off, and bleed/flush the brakes depending on the condition of the fluid that comes out of the bleeder screws.

Get pic related, mityvac hand pumps make all this much easier.

Getting the tapping noises on cold start which means indicates lifters are starting to go bad. My dad's friend is a mechanic and said I should use higher viscosity oil in order to maintain oil pressure but that sounds like a bad idea.

Is that an actual solution aside from replacing the lifters entirely? Even if it helps it seems like a temporary fix
>>
>>17469030
What kind of oil filter are you using? Cheaper ones, especially frams are known to cause that. The antidrainback valve fails and lets the oil out of the oil filter, having dry starts every time.
>>
>>17469058
Valvoline filters

Don't know much about filters but they seem okay, it's a german car though so maybe I need an even better one

The tapping sound goes away after 5 minutes of driving though, someone told me it's because the oil heats up and expands
>>
>>17469211

> should use higher viscosity oil in order to maintain oil pressure

Your mechanic is right though.

The only permanent fix is a complete engine tear down and rebuild.
>>
>>17469259
Yeah that's true, think I'm gonna use Mann from now on

>>17469395
Well it's only the lifters, I don't think it would need a total rebuild I mean it still runs smoothly
>>
>>17469375
As the other poster said, use mud flaps.

To a lesser degree, on multi-lane roads, don't follow another car in the "dog heeling" position. The muddy spray from other cars splashes out. So if you position your car such that the spray from adjacent cars keeps hitting the side of your car, then you will pick up more dirt that way.

>>
>>17469058
>The antidrainback valve fails and lets the oil out of the oil filter,
Vertically mounted filters don't really need that valve. Also, there are engine blocks with those valves built-in. So filters for those engines don't need to have those valves.
