Post cars that were meant to be economy cars that lasted and were well maintained and spotless. I have a soft spot for 20 year old Japanese commuter cars that were meticulously cared for and appear to be like new now.

There's something oddly satisfying about seeing a model of car that was meant to be cheap and essentially disposable that's instead been looked after and cared for.

Maybe it's because there aren't many of them around anymore, and seeing one that looks new is kind of like traveling in time.

Note to you guys trying to make it to the spotless commuter title .
>Hands off the shifter while driving if its an auto...it promotes unnecessary wear on the plastic.
>Easy on the cleaners and use basic light stuff.
>Don't be afraid of dings an dents..these things happen and will make you sick if your worrying about a 20k car for the next so on years.

One of the qualities I look for in a clean shitbox commuter are basic internals (missing nobs, wear in weird places, broken plastic/ trim.
IM mostly concerned about the condition of the paint ( aside from minor dings ) as well is (most important) it was taken care of mechanically. (I don't give a fuck if the dealer did it or you did it) just make it happen. Man as I was walking home earlier I saw a clean Daewoo . They stopped selling those in the US who knows when. There is an old dealership near me that turned into a parking lot but the sign is still up. Guy was surprised that I even asked about it but upon me asking how the fuck he kept it so clean he was like you just gotta give a shit about your things man. He knows its a piece of shit, he knows its not collectable , he knows its probably worth less than a conventional car but its his so he wants it to look presentable. Thing was mint though..the carpets were under aftermarket plastic ones and still in the DEALER PLASTIC ....I repeat still in the dealer plastic.
>>
>>17446600
>Don't be afraid of dings and dents
>Ate at some restaurant with the family a few weeks ago
>Go back outside and say goodbye and notice some faggot fucked up the side of my car with no note
It drives fine but it pisses me off looking at it, but I don't want to commit anymore money to the car.
>>
>>17446615
I did that to my own car once because some tire fuck has these big mudders on it and I didn't see the bottom half of the tire. I left no note I tried to wait a bit but guy took off the second I got back to the care. I may have left a scuff on the bottom of his bumper but my scuff was right at tire height and his was a bit lower then were mine showed up. Car was a shit truck with dents and scuffs everywhere anyways. It was impossible to tell. I hate when assholes have these huge tires and don't accommodate for the space
>>
>>17446628
Mine's just a '99 Sedan, so it wasn't a space issue, just some fucking idiot who can't drive and probably forgot where the fucking gas and brake were. My bumper is semi-crumpled under the light and there's paint chipping and it makes me so angery.
>>
>>17446628
Also this store has its parking lot in like what looks like a alley way and the spaces are nearly half a foot skinner than normal spots. Its nearly impossible to park and I should have avoided the place to begin with

>>17446705
I have the funds to buy a new car outright but
a) I don't have my own garage to store it in
and
b) I don't feel comfortable dropping so much money on a car that's going to be depreciating in value no matter how much I care for it.
I'm saving for the down payment of a house and buying a new car would set me back quite a bit. That's why I'm looking at non-new cars.

Dropping $3000 to $4000 on a civic from 2000 or something is what I'm hoping to do right now. Whether it lasts the next 5 to 10 years without a major fuck up is something that I need to keep my fingers crossed for.

MFW I have a mint silver 01 CR-V

Good cars. Multilink all around. Boxy with good visibility. Lots of storage and hidden hidey spaces. Pic nic table. Good visibility. Basic AWD for shit weather. Boxy, plain, airy, and reasonably tough. Basically, a japanese rendition of a volvo wagon. We just use it for camping and dump runs now because we have two newer lexuses, but it's too good of a car to let go. And it looks mint. Just a little bit of the molding is starting to fade and it has a few road chips in the hood.
>>
>>17447842
I have the 2016. Bough it because it reminded me of the old crv in size. Plenty of room and a decent awd for bad weather. I cant wait to get to the 100k club

Most likely.

At my community center, they would typically hold senior activities and you'd find real gems in the parking lot, once found a PRISTINE 1992 manual Corolla, pinch welds still intact, paint was absolutely perfectly white, ect.

She wanted 3K for it at the time but I didn't have the cash.

Also saw another absolutely pristine 1st gen ES300 in the parking lot.

My grandfather had a 1990s Taurus that was pretty mint as well. Just one piece of plastic interior trim had cracked but easy repair

Yes. USDM variants have a bunch of extra anti intrusion bars to improve crash safety. The Tsuru would've never passed federal safety standards even for the years that the sentra equivalent sold in the US.

You can bring in a Tsuru for parts but the chassis itself is junk.

What a coincidence.

I've got a USDM one of these and have been thinking about selling it after realizing I've got too many cars.

I was just watching those crash tests the other day. On one hand it's great on gas and fun, on the other I don't want to get dismembered in a worst case scenario.

It's probably true that the USDM cars are a lot safer but I wish I could find a source. Still doesn't change the fact there's no airbags.

Yeah oddly enough these clean shitbox commuter cars of the 70s 80s 90s and even in the 2000s generate something in people that just screams frugality and making things last. I wonder what cars that are made today that will have this notion in later decades...hmmm lemme throw together a list.

Theres a guy in my neighborhood that has a s-p-o-t-l-e-s-s first gen fit. Literally looks showroom fresh and like the other anon was saying he even had the dealer warning labels on the glovebox and the carpet in its plastic in the back. He got aftermarket rubber ones. Thing looks showroom fresh. Literally...I had to ask...by some chance maybe it was old stock sold recently or something...nope. It was bought new and kept pristine. He has a 2017 accord in the garage and is looking to sell this one or trade in when he gets a sports car.

Also, currently at the bodyshop to treat the couple few rust spots it has before they spread. Tried to see if I could tackle it myself, but my welding unit is way too powerful - was blowing through all of the spare testing metal sheets I got. The shop owner is an acquaintance of mine and even he is surprised - apparently cleaner than quite a few 24 year old cars he had there.
