Not at all. Usually on fuel pump assemblies there's a "sock" that the fuel passes through, which helps keep out larger particles such as rust chips from the fuel. Or in your case, gas caps.

If you are OCD concerned about it, you'll have to drop the fuel tank and pull it out by hand. Then again, considering that your gauge is unreliable in the first place, it just may not be worth the effort to do it. Just be careful next time.

Many tanks have an access plate at the top for replacing the in-tank pump, fuel level sender, etc. There will also be a plate in the trunk floor (or wherever) that can be opened.

Run the car until the tank is almost empty, open up the access, reach in with a nitrile glove and pull the thing out.
