We already do that.
Your car has a small generator, called an 'alternator' connected to the engine's crankshaft. It mainly powers the spark plugs while the engine runs, but also powers accessories as well.

The battery is just there to start the car and power the electronics when the engine isn't running. That's why it goes dead and stops running your fuel injectors if your alternator isn't working
