So I walked into the bathroom with my jacket on for a quick post-ride leak, and by chance looked in the mirror. Holy shit my jacket is getting grungy. i need some advice buying a van or pickup truck to haul my bike. My bike is a Kawasaki Vulcan, it's not a large bike. Which is the minimum size to haul a bike? Will small pickups like a ford ranger with double cabin or a little van like a Dacia Dokker be enough?
>>

>>17415728
A regular hatchback has enough towing capability for a bike.
>>
>>17415025
NOOOOOOOOOOOO
>>
>>17415728
"Dogcatcher" vans will be a pain in the ass because you have to remove the entire rear seats and likely the passenger seat to fit a motorcycle, and it's incredibly cumbersome getting the thing in there and back out and strapping it down, also you may have to unmount the mirrors, the roof clearance isn't as tall as the exterior makes it look.

Pickups on the other hand are a pain in the ass at all other times, and they usually have a pretty high load floor making loading a discomfort.

If I needed bike transportation I'd make a trailer my top priority, provided I already have a car to tow it with. They're affordable and simple, and basically any car on the European market is rated to tow at least a couple hundred kilos.

Info I forgot to mention, it's been plagued with charging issues and having been sorted out I've been riding everyday as long as it's not pissing hard rain. So two years is really 6 months of riding if I were to guess.

Speaking of charging, has anyone else found charring on your stator-RR connector and splice the two together?

It only looks like that because kawasaki couldn't afford to make anything fancier.

All that "uh jap aesthetic 90s" comes from a lack of manufacturing technology to make more complex designs for cheap and a lack of money to do things like design, certify, and produce a headlight assembly that only goes on one model and year. So they're all flat and simple with parts bin lights.

Ducati, for example, was well off enough to move away from that cheap aesthetic earlier because they actually had money they were willing to spend on making their bikes look nice year before japan made something that didn't look straight out of exactly 1990...

Which eventually triggered japan into putting out garbage looking bikes just to tell the world hey, we can make non-square/round headlights and curvy fairings too! Rook, nippon is future!

Do /dbt/ I've been poking around alone because I finally have enough disposable income to get a bike as a hobby, and I kinda want something to wrench on rather than dumping $3-5k on a bike. I turned up a few things and something that caught my eye was a '89 Yamaha Fazer.

Never heard of the Fazer till then and it's an odd looking thing. Guy went with the usual "make offer" bullshit. So before I probe the guy for more details about what the bike needs, does any have experience with these?

Also found a
> '82 Suzuki GS300 $1k
>'14 Ninja 300 that been dumped and he's trying to pass as naked for $1500
>'82 GS1100 that looks rough as hell $700

Can't weigh in on the Fazer but the two GS's and the Magna are probably your best bets for entry-level fixer-uppers. I'd imagine there'd be a ton of used parts to be had for them, as well as a lot of support as far as forums and fanbases go. I'll tell you though that if you get one that doesn't run when you get it, all you're going to do is want to ride if it's the first one you've ever bought, fair warning.

It is a European bike but the specific engine is known for being bulletproof.

The sprag clutch can make some clunking noises when it wears out so I'm banking on that and I have a new oil pressure sensor on the way.

Any time a car or bike manufacturer needs a "specialist" mechanic. It's usually because the vehicle is either poorly designed, poorly engineered, and poorly built.

Usually shitty cars/bikes are just discarded and lost to history, but if they were expensive when new people tend to spend retarded money trying to keep them running and paying "specialized" mechanics who know the idiosyncrasies of the particularly poor design and capitalize on the clinginess of these individuals to severely depreciated and worthless piles of shit.

see: VW, Mercedes, Jaguar, BMW "specialized" mechanics. and it's not just about european cars/bikes. Volvos don't need specialized mechanics because they are well designed/engineered/built.

lt;dr if a car/bike needs a "specialized mechanic, or there is a "specialized mechanic" market market for that car/bike. Objectively the car/bike is probably garbage and a waste of money.

Maybe I don't carry a bunch of shit for no reason, especially a spare visor when the one on my helmet works perfectly fine.

Why would you wear a backpack while riding if you don't need to?

>Someday you'll learn a valuable lesson.
I ride modern motorcycles from a quality manufacturer. I also have AAA if shit goes sideways for some reason.

The most likely breakdowns are going to be flat tires, and that's not something I'll be able to fix with a screwdriver and a fucking helmet visor in a backpack. The list of things that are could go wrong and that would be fixable with a screwdriver are pretty much nonexistent.

A backpack provides me no options.

That's retarded, and pointless. As previously discussed.

>or carry a jacket or sweatshirt.
I live in California. There are no real surprises with the weather. If it's cold I'll wear a zip up hoodie under my riding jacket. If it's hot I wont.

What else would I need to carry in a backpack? There is literally nothing that would serve me any substantial purpose to justify encumbering myself with a backpack unnecessarily.

I get it, you like carrying stupid shit around for no reason.

>Becaue that's how my riding position is.
Laying down.
That's quite possibly how you'll end up if you ever go down. And I bet your wont be glad then that you have that large awkward piece of plastic and a fucking screwdriver floating around in a backpack.

>Visor
retarded, as previously discussed. There is no reason to carry a visor separate from your helmet when you can have one appropriate for all situations on your helmet at all times.

>Screwdriver for visor
redundant retardation.

Weather for the next 7 days. Cloudy, rain, cold, and if I think I'll be fine with a zip up sweatshirt, where when I leave it's sunny out and 70° but when the sun goes down it's 45°.

>I will carry a spare shield because when the sun goes down, I want a clear shield. And it will be a fresh sheild for the ride home. No bugs to clean off. And no tint so I have full vision at night.

If I ran a smoke 100% if the time. Riding at night would be shitty.

If I ran a clear 100% if the time, I would have to wear sunglasses under my helmet, and that's uncomfortable for me

So I prefer to be comfortable, have a bag, have the option of riding at dark, and just have peace of mind that I have an extra layer to ride with.

>The increased quality over the last two years is an abberation.
The 2015 R1 engine is the same architecture as the previous generation. In fact the Yamaha Genesis engine hasn't changed all that significantly since the early-mid 2000's. Most significant was the change to the crossplane crank in 2009. really it was only slight internals, bore:stroke dimensions, and materials changes for 2015.

If anything the 2015 R1 has a worse record for reliability than the previous generation because of the 2015 bikes having transmission lockup issues.

yamaha has consistently been at or near the highest rated reliability for the past 15+ years.

Roseville here on an '82 CM250C. I run a clear shield 24/7 and got a pair of carbon framed RayBan's (8313) with polarized G15 lenses. The flexible frames work nicely under the helmet. Bugs are usually only an issue once it gets dark. The bike only gets about 150 to a tank, so I just stop about every couple hours to top off and wipe the shield down with the squeege at the pumps. The only thing that has been a bit odd (not a problem really) is that the UV coatings on the shield and the lenses do some weird shit. About 95% of cars look like they have bright purple windshields.
