So here we have the 80's and 90's where the Japs are constantly pumping out decent 4 bangers and other sporty cars then suddenly when it hit the 00's it just grinded to a halt and we didn't see anything special or noteworthy for atleast a decade, what went wrong?
Combination of safety regulations and lack of competition

Safety regulations, emissions regulations.
why spend money on cars that dont sell when it comes to expensive halo cars
otherwise
if the 2000s made nothing special or noteworthy then the 80s and 90s didnt either since it was more of the same shit
you just sound like a wrong generation fag

the Japs faced a popping economic bubble in the 90's which hit their auto industry pretty hard; because of this, most manufacturers trimmed a lot of (tasty) fat off of their product lines. Also, as others have said safety/emissions regulations also played major roles in the death of their affordable performance cars. Unfortunately, the glut of neat cars coming out of Japan were due to a unique political/economic/cultural environment which will probably never occur again.

>if the 2000s made nothing special or noteworthy then the 80s and 90s didnt either since it was more of the same shit
the market's offerings had changed a lot by 2010, the early 2000s were definitely an extension of the 1990s in many ways tho.

in 2010 you could still get
WRX STI
EVO X
Eclipse
Civic Type R
GT-R
370Z
RX-8
MX-5
which are all extensions of shit from the 80s-90s

Aside from the other stuff such as emissions and a declining economy, the rise of the SUV in the U.S. market in the early 2000s, as well as the gradual decline of market share due to the recession and increased competition from Korea led to them focusing more on vehicles that they know sell, rather than niche 4/6 banger sports cars.

Most of them have the same HP as an everyday car though.
>>17414284
average horsepower in 2010 was about 250 hp so not really
and the ones that do are lighter than your typical car
hp doesnt make the car anyway

Don't get me as a "MOAR TORQ!" guy, but when someone buys a sports car (for example, a BRZ) its kinda fucking annoying to be smoked by a minivan, even if the handling is sex.
>>17414349
well people buying sports cars should realize theyve never been about speed
just look at old stuff like MGs and Triumphs that are slower than even family cars of their time
>>17414303
2010 was 7 years ago
>>17414215
most of the cars you listed are a far cry from their supposed ancestors, the GT-R and 370Z especially.

Jee-Tee-Aru is EZ mode supercar now, and 370z is just a fucking refresh.
I know extremely little about cars, car culture, or anything involving getting my soft chubby fingers dirty, but the appeal of Japanese racing/drifting cars from the 80s and 90s literally brought me into this board. The look and builds of these cars just sort of scream enjoyment.

That's an RX 7
>>17414094
They still made nice cars, just kept them in Japan only.
Then there's Honda, who lost so much money on the Integra type R that Mitsubishi was about to do a hostile takeover. Shit happened during the start of the century

That's an RX7 FC (OP)
The other pic is from the RX7 FD (the next gen).

Pray to the car gods a Korean automotive bubble comes while we're still young enough to enjoy it.

>RX7 FD
I think the RX7 FD is one of the sexiest cars ever made, that along with the Toyota 2000gt from the 60's
