The 3800 is dated these days, but was pretty good little motor back in the '90s.
Transmission isn't "unreliable," it's just that it doesn't handle abuse well. Taking it out of it's operating comfort zone will lead to problems especially for how old these cars are now.
Styling is subjective. Personally, I didn't like it. It's like a caricature of the typical '90s styling of rounded curves because the proportions came out all wrong.
If you are seriously considering a '90s Riviera, I'd also look into the contemporary W-body cars since they use the same running gear.
