How should one go about building a shifter kart from scratch or buying if too hard?

Are you literally retarded?

To build one, buy a shell, get a motorcycle engine, buy an expensive shift kit for go carts, put it together, drive it for a few weeks, stick in garage for years, regret every $ you wasted on a stupid fucking shifter cart.

it's about the experience anon

Buy a chassis, buy a Honda180, buy some rain/slick tires and rimz, fireproof suit, gloves, shoes, approved helmet... >Go racing...

What are you planning on doing with it? If you're looking to actually compete, you can't really just make one yourself, but you could if you're looking to drive around your yard.

Look into your local track and see what divisions are popular there. Pick an engine that works in that class, then get a chassis from any reputable company. A lot of times the track owner will be a distributor for a certain chassis or engine company, so consider just buying from them, but you absolutely don't have to, because some track owners will just try and rip you off.

If it's a smaller track, you could find that shifters aren't that popular, so do you be afraid to go with a single gear. Back when I raced rotax jr karts, we would be faster than any shifter I'd seen at that track since it was too short for them to really benefit.

From a quick google search, I'd check out a place called F1 outdoor in East Bridgewater. Looks like they have a pretty active shifter class, as well as some single speed classes.

I don't think I could help you out too much with building a kart from scratch, but I was pretty involved in competitive karting around 5-6 years ago, so I should be able to help a bit there if you're interested in that route.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's really a way to do both building it by yourself and racing it at a track. You can get pretty autistic about kart suspension stuff though, so you can probably fill your time quite well if you're into that.

yeah, that works for me. I've wanted to build or drive something that i can take fast turns in and maybe lose the rear end for a second on purpose so i feel cool
