I fucking hate this piece of shit.

It was a shitty car when new. Then poor morons thought it was good. Then they realized it was a shit car.

Kinda glad I bought it for $1600 or I'd be a hell of a lot more pissed.
Is that a Mazda3 or a Protege?

nevermind, googled it.
OP: what year is yours? My friend has a 2000 Protege 4dr sedan and his is pretty bulletproof, except for a transmission problem.

2002 Protegé5. Yeah, don't get me wrong, it's not awful -- I think it just had a really shitty owner before me. I mean, good god, how stupid do you have to be to outright neglect the timing belt long after it's due? Seems like every other week I have to take it back to my parents' to fix it though.

Definitely sounds like a shitty owner, a timing belt change is preventative maintenance that should have been done.
Funnily enough the timing belt on mine hadn't been done when I got it either, it was only 25k kms overdue though.

Guarantee it was some single soccer mom who couldn't be bothered to do basic maint on the car while probably putting 2-300 miles a week on the thing. You'll be lucky if she did 3 oil changes in the 10 years she owned it.
