why is quadrasteer so rare? i want one but never find any for sale
>>
>>17405747
Expensive option at the dealership that most didn't think was worth the extra money. You looking for a Suburban or a pickup?
>>
>>17405763
either. just want one. i dont even care if its 2wd
>>
>>17405766
Check ebay regularly and don't be afraid to fly to one and drive it back if you find the right deal. Just test drive it and make sure the quadrasteer system is in good working order before any money changes hands. It's not unreliable but if you buy one that's already busted, fixing it could prove expensive.

Anon with the stumbling Cherokee from last thread.

I've noticed now after pissing with it for a few minutes that it's inconsistent. It seems to coincide with me hitting bumps or just shaking the vehicle in general. I was test driving it after cleaning the throttle body and It was doing fine until I hit some railroad tracks and it started backfiring and stumbling like it was running way rich or something. Pulled over to the side of the road and killed it, then started it back up and it ran fine all the way back home. So I'm guessing it's Probably a loose cable since I just changed the battery (it wasn't doing this before I swapped the batteries out). Will a 4.0 not stay running with the battery cable loose/disconnected?

That's a 3" body lift and ~2" of torsion key crank.
If you've got a 1500, it's also an extra 1" front and ~3" taller in the back due to being a 2500.

Probably doesn't even matter, I'm just paranoid about it being more complicated, fragile, and expensive. Anybody know much about gmt800 AWD suburbans?

I have records of previous owner having front axle assembly replaced and it was more than 2000$ just for the part. I do NOT want to go through that and probably (hopefully) won't but don't want to put much money and effort into something that isn't a good platform to build my off roader in the first place.

Another new symptom while out driving. It tends to get worse as I come to a stop, then it smoothes out. Alternator being bad was funny enough the first thing I checked. It puts out ~13.5 volts, which is apparently around where it should be. I just tested fuel pressure and it was at ~50 PSI, which is also in range for the fuel pump. That just leaves a vacuum leak or a bad ECU, since it isn't throwing any codes at me (even when I pulled a plug wire).

The one thing I know about them is that you can swap the transfer case for a real one.

>You need a technician. I'd gladly help you out if you're close. Where you at?

South Dakota. so probably not close. what I don't get is its intermittent. it isn't an all-the-time thing. it just randomly starts running like shit for a while. sometimes it goes away, sometimes it doesn't. all the while there's no light. but like I said, I pulled the plug to cylinder 2 and it didnt throw a light either, even though it was very noticably missing.
>>
>>17407616
It has to notice multiple drive cycles with the same issue before triggering the light. And yeah, you're a few thousand miles away, sorry. Find an Aamco in your area, they almost always give free diagnostics. If not, maybe you can pay someone to figure it out, I know not everyone here is poor but you have to assume. Good luck, Anon, don't give up.

did plugs, gonna do cap, rotor, and wires when I get paid. they didnt LOOK to be in bad shape, though.

>is the misfire always on the same cylinder?
I'm not sure. it just randomly starts tripping over itself and backfiring and jerking the fuck out of the drivetrain (starts chirping tires real bad since its torquey as fuck and its a stick shift). like I said if I stomp my foot to the floor during this it revs up normally (albeit I quickly start speeding so I slow down). it only really does this at half throttle. if I go WOT it goes away for a minute.
>>
>>17407719
>Yep that's really bad that basically tells the car how rich or lean it needs to run based on the exhaust, also kills your mpg. Had mine go out rough shifting and fucked up idle

THAT badly? I had a 91 toyota with BOTH o2 sensors disconnected (then only 1 for a while) and all I got was a little hesitation(and shitty mpg)

>>
>>17411417
Step 1: Expand the budget. Keep running the slicks until you can afford to drop ~$1k on tires. If it's a DD, stick to some sort of all-terrain (I run BFG KO2s on my DD). They don't perform as well offroad, but they'll last longer on-road and be more comfy and more fuel-efficient than some of your dedicated offroad tires.

BFGs are the most durable mt tires i ever owned. They are the only tires that don't shred after driving on rocky roads. So yeah, they cost more but saving 60 - 70 - 100$ and getting cheaper tires that shred on pavement and stones not worth it for me. bfg mt are surprisingly quite on pavement too.

No.

Reason being, there's a 50% chance they were absolutely RAPED and may have some internal damage you can't see.

Or there's a 50% chance they were just run on some pristine road queen and babied their whole life.

But either way, you won't find them for a very good price. Every faggot I've seen hocking used AT or MT want a shitload. You're better off buying new, getting the warranty, and having them installed and balanced by a reputable shop.

I agree. Last set reached 130,000km before I replaced them.Granted they spent a lot of their life on paved roads, but they were bulletproof. I ended up finding a 2" long self tapping screw lodged in one of them. It must've been there for a while because the head of the screw had been worn to a perfectly smooth shine. Ripped it out, plugged it, and ran for a long time before replacing.

I haven't bought a new tire in 5 years, nothing wrong with used tires so long as you check them for defects and damage and weak spots in the sidewall

I got a set of 80% tread 33x12.50x15 mud tires for $400 and ran them for three years with no issues at all
>>
>>17411569
I'm well aware that there isn't anything inherently bad about used tires in general. What I'm saying is that you won't save anything by getting a used set of BFGs. If someone is selling them used, and they're not low on tread, it's because they beat the piss out of them and don't want to keep running them and risk a blowout. A full set of new ones will give you guaranteed performance, a full lifespan, and a warranty, for not much more than what a used set will cost. My brand-new BFGs ran me $770 out the door, came with a 6-month warranty, and include free repairs for the life of the tires.

I brought a set of used KOs with pitiful tread left for $100

Another thing to keep in mind if buying used is to make sure the offset is correct. Those KOs? The offset was wrong and they rub like Fukkk. Too bad though. I like the rims :-\

Turns out HMMWVs never switched to the DS4 pump, so all of them 94+ have correct TCM. Luckily my local scrapyard is recycling HMMWVs so they've got dozens of the TCMs laying around in sealed and padded boxes. I was definitely happy to crack it open and see the correct part number.
>>
>>17412717
Actually if the offset is too far in, more so than stock, then running wheel spacers to push the wheels out to factory offset, or just past factory offset, wouldn't be bad. It's only when you go crazy low backspacing where the wheels hang out 3"+ from the factory wheels where you start to have issues, well that and running a much larger tire then came from the factory will also put extra leverage on joints and bearings.

Well the plugs are the same, but I'd imagine the pinouts are likely different. I'll need to get my hands on some wiring diagrams.

They should seeing as the HMMWVs are 4x4 and the 94-96 DB2 vans used the same TCMs.

Same trail that leads from central Ontario up to Lake Nip. We have had a delayed snow melt along with heavy rainfall for the past month so the stagnant water has been really damn high. This little rut was around 1 metre deep and I would've been able to cross it if i had the appropriate door seals.

North of Algonquin has large "ATV" paths that are cut across crown land with permission by MNR (ministry of natural resources) that connects roads. Within every mile of highway between Nippissing and Sudbury, there are around 3 different trailheads that connect with eachother in this HUGE network of trails / rocks that are not documented. GPSs won't help you much because they wind in and out everywhere.

I love going through them because it's a different path every time and you can literally spend a month wandering around these trails going back and forth between them. Unfortunately, I only had a few days go go through them as I had a sense of direction to go around. I love just taking random small ones away from logging routes.

This is what they look like in the clearing.

Due to these swaths of rock formations being crown lands, you can cut your own trails with permission and make them lead into the backyards of one of your friends / cottages.

You can also do any of this on the rocks:
>shoot legally in canadaland
>camp legally as long as you want
>start fires

And they're so far from general campers and people that you don't have to worry about anything. If you find one with a creekbed (one or two hours north of North Bay), you can reasonably live /out/ for a month subsisting off crayfish, riverfish, and just drink the creekwater. Just gotta go into town to occasionally get gas to keep you going.

I'm looking to replace my winter/off road truck with something that isn't a piece of shit.

>under $12,000 USD

So it's basically going to be a high mileage full-sized truck. Silverado, F150, Tacoma are my top 3 choices. I live in the rust belt. Are those bad choices? Do they get rusted frames other than maybe the Tacoma? Chevy 4.8 and 5.3 seem pretty reliable. Are their transmissions likely to blow?

Avoid 2008-2012 GM trucks, they have a frame rust problem, though not nearly as bad as the Tacoma. Avoid F1shitty because anything they can do a different truck can do better. Try to find an '06 or '07 Silverado/Sierra, 2500 with the 6.0 gas motor. Big enough to handle real work, the 6.0 is practically bulletproof, and whatever trans is behind it (it's either a 4L80E or a 6L80E, i'm not sure) is nigh-indestructible as well. These are the trucks that survive 300k hard miles as company work trucks, and come out of it still running strong.

So I recently obtained another 4x4 Chevy Silverado C/K 1500. No Z71's in my area that weren't all beat up or near death, so this weekend warrior/ workhorse will have to do. Still planning on going /out/ with it thought.

But I have a question, and if anybody can help it would be greatly appreciated.

So currently I am running stock 16x7 wheels and stock size 245/75/16 tires. I am currently looking to beef up and upgrade the tires and wheels.

What are my size options without a lift or grinding? Would I be able to fit and run 15x10's and fit 31x10.5x15's? Or should I play it save and run 16x8's with 265/75/16's, if I can?

I know in Z71's I would be able to fit 33's without any rubbing, but this truck doesn't have the offroad package, and the truck is generally smaller than a Z71. (If I recall, Z71's are 3 inches higher?)

Really any input I would appreciate greatly, and any suggestions/recommendations are welcome.

DO NOT RUN 10" WIDE WHEELS. 15x8" wheels are all that's needed for 31x10.50s all the way 37x12.50s.

The narrower 8" wheel will help hold the tire better at the bead, as well as tuck the wheel in away from the outside of the tire which protects it. Also 10" wide wheels make the tire look stretched, which is gay, and will make the tire stick out more, which is bad for rubbing and turning radius.

I had 15x10" wheels with 35x12.50s on my K5, the 15x8" wheels look and perform MUCH better. Also go with steel wheels over aluminum, they bend instead of cracking and breaking. Steel wheel lips can be beat back round with a hammer unlike shit aluminum wheels.

Thanks. I had 93' Explorer, like 4 years ago, and after some meh cars I finally feel like I'm back home with the XJ, the whole 90's truck feel is so damn nice. Didn't get stuck, sand and steep sandy slopes seemed easy to handle, but I didn't go any muddy trails, since it has been raining the whole evening and I'm still a total newbie when it comes to driving off the road.
First thing Monday I'll go see the shop about the rear springs, and when that issue has been dealt with I need to decide whether to keep these tires this summer and get a new set of wheels and studded tires for winter. Or do I already get a set of all terrains in a reasonable size that fits the stock height.
>>
>>17425200
>studded tires
just get traction tires
far superior to studded tire bs

>do I already get a set of all terrains in a reasonable size that fits the stock height
what's your commute like?
where do you live?
how often do you plan on wheeling?
>>
>>17425232
I was thinking studded, because of the Finnish winter, but the current tires do have M+S marking, as in they are traction tires, so I guess I can try going this winter with them and get the studded ones later if it's suicidal with current tires.
Commute is 10km to one direction, roads are mostly paved (poorly atm. infrastructure is falling apart here) I plan on mostly going some smaller trails/tractor roads to camping, hunting trips when autumn comes and such.
Dont yet know how much I'll be doing it, but I'd like to have atleast some sort of all terrains, I have experience with yokohama geolanders and general grabber at2s, both were good tires, yet I'm intrigued by hankook dynapros, they seem like a good tire for its worth.

I have to agree with >>17425706; all-terrain/mud-terrain tires do not hold a cancle to an on-road winter tire for road driving, even with siping and studded

Best one I've come across would be studded Goodyear Duratrac Wrangler all-terrains, but their grip is still far from something like a Nokian Hakkapelititta 8 SUV/Hakkapeliitta LT2, or even the kinda shit Cooper Discoverer M+S with studs

Still; I've driven a few of the trucks at my work all year around on unmodified BFG AT KO2's, which during the winter means steep mountain roads that are just compacted ice & snow, with the odd gritting here and there. Still get around ok, but the steepest parts & tightest corners do require planning as there is no chance you'll be able to stop there

I got a 4.0 TJ recently, saving up for a lift. Thinking about this one

https://teraflex.com/shop_items/528ffa7fead962f416e72d3d

I wanna learn to wheel, but I don't have many trails around here, and most of the ones in town are just mud.

That's a really nice kit. You should look up to see if there are any wheeling groups in your area, and go to some met ups, luckly for me being in california I can just pull up youtube and find just about any trail review in my area but I don't know your situation.

Anyways, that is a REALLY high quality lift, but you wont be going anywhere without a locker. I'd recomend a cheaper lift, and getting a locker. I don't have a whole lot of articulation/flex but my little aussie lunchbox locker in my rear will bring me just about anywhere.
>>
>>17431186
What lift would you recommend then? I'd like at least 3 inches. I've been avoiding RC and Skyjacker, and figured Teraflex would be #1 Also, I was thinking about getting a front locker, but figured I'd do that after my lift wheels and tires.
>>
>>17431194
Not the guy you've been talking to, but I'd recommend making sure you have a rear LSD (not locker, and definitely not welded spiders, unless it's a dedicated trail rig that gets trailered everywhere) before investing in a lift. Then you can go for a lift, and that teraflex kit you posted is a good one. Then put in a front locker.

said, pick up a rear LSD and a front selectable locker (air or electric) then move onto a lift. articulation is nice and all, it will keep your wheels planted and give you more traction, but a locker will do miracles for traction. Tires are a must as well, and considering your description of local trail, tires will become slicked and loose traction easily.

Look EVERYWHERE for rust. Go up and down that frame with a fucking hammer if you have to. After that make sure the timing chain tensioner guides have been replaced (if you hear the engine chattering either walk away or prepare for a timing chain job) And make sure he let's you test drive it. Make sure the tranny shifts smooth. W56s don't take kindly to being abused.

No they don't. Some people ask that, but it's not the going rate. I just checked the same CL that one was listed on and found several in the $2000-3000 range, some of which were in better shape than the one you posted.

>salvage title

Buy the White 88. He's asking $2700 obviously waiting on someone to offer $2500. It's got fewer miles, a clean title, and is in better overall shape.

Miles not a big deal? Then buy the lifted red 92 with 258k on it $2500 obo.

Don't like red? Buy the black 94 for $1000 and drop a junkyard LS into it for $500.

Buy the 91 with 165k and a clean title for $2500.

Buy the 90 with a 4" lift and fiberglass fenders for $2000 obo. Again, clean title.

Dead set on spending $3500? Instead of looking at getting the least, look to get the most.

Buy the fully loaded 99 with 148k miles and a clean title.

Buy the clean 95 with 142k miles and a clean title.

Why are you lying about the prices? What do you gain?

Reliable, yes. But 114 hp and has to wind up to 3600 rpm to make peak torque of 140 ft-lbs. That's about half of what you'd want for the minimum in a vehicle of that size.

There's options out there just as reliable that make the desired power.

That white 88 is a v6 and automatic, really don't want the v6 to die at 200k and really don't want automatic, my post has a new transmission guy has paperwork for, looking for a first gen pickup or first gen 4runner, probably both my dream cars rn, looking for 4cyl 5 speed, most the cheaper 1st Gen yotas have v6
>>
>>17433463
Mainly looking for reliability and not looking for any extreme rock crawling or anything kind of just trailing maybe a little mudding and mainly camping when I'm not daily, any other recommendations?
>>
>>17433442
Btw he also put in new leaf springs so that it prevents the 4runner sag
>>
>>17433471
The 22re is more reliable than the V6, but the V6 isn't THAT bad and the 22re isn't THAT good.

You can't assume the V6 is going to die at 200k and then buy a 22re at OVER 200k and expect to never have any issues.

Go buy literally anything with a TBI 350 if you want reliability.

>don't want automatic, my post has a new transmission guy has paperwork for,
The guy doesn't use it as a toy, has the "more reliable" manual, and had transmission issues so severe before 200k that he needed a completely new transmission?

Do you know how this sounds?

You're hyping yourself up over something entirely unimpressive. What are driving now that makes you think 114 HP in a 3800 lb SUV is your dream vehicle? Go buy a 1:18 model if you like the way it looks, but it would make a horrible daily driver.

>better spend $1000 extra to make sure I don't have to spend $100 and hour with a floor jack to replace the rear springs
>muh investment

Don't be that guy.

>>17433505
22re/22r 4cyl are known to run about 400k miles, he had the transmission switched out when he rebuilt the motor and the transmissions from those yotas weren't very strong so if the guy who had it before him beat it up it could be that, I drove a 1996 1500 Chevy pickup before, I mean what would you recommend I'm not looking for a 90's yota period or anything 90's really I'm not trying to race anybody or climb boulders
>>
>>17433506
>$1000 extra
Who the fuck is this guy
>>
>>17433518
>22re/22r 4cyl are known to run about 400k miles
So are 6.5 diesels which are generally regarded as being unreliable even though they last that long being worked much, much harder.
And so are GM small blocks, GM big blocks, and most any pre 2010s diesels except for Ford 6.0s. "reliability" is a relative term.

Why does a motor that should run to 400k already need a rebuild in half that?
Rebuilding a tired engine isn't a reason to replace a transmission if it's fine. If he elected to replace the trans and rebuild the engine, it's a safe bet the trans what dead or close to it and the engine was already getting tired.

If you want to throw a rebuild into the mix you could name off a half dozen light truck engines that should easily make it to 600k with the usage you're talking about. The limiting factor for most is the abuse they're put up to and a lack of maintenance. It's not like a previous owner was using that 4Runner to lug around 20,000 lbs at 70 mph with no maintenance.

I'm not trying to talk you into buying any one specific thing, I'm just telling you that the 22re is not worthy of the praise it's receiving and perhaps you've failed to place what you've heard about it into perspective.

Does anyone know if the backseat in a 2door blazer/tahoe/yukon(1992-1999) is replaceable with the 3rd row seat from a suburban? Or are they not the same?

yes

Advice needed.
When I put my vehicle in drive sometimes it takes a good three seconds to engage, but if I shift into neutral then put into drive it shifts right away. Any ideas?

Just got a new tranny installed about two months ago. It's been doing this since tranny replacement.

Hopefully its just a sensor or switch.

That's what I was thinking/hoping.

Apparently he thinks that 'Burbs are less capable and less supported by the aftermarket than the trucks they share a platform with. While he does have a point in that they're heavier, it's not by much.

New CB came in over the weekend! It's gonna be difficult to fit this in the spot my old one was in the center console :-\
I may have to rig up a new overhead console.

Fixing it up is the plan. It needs a lot of TLC but I'm getting there. I also learned the lesson the hard way on how hard it can be having two projects simultaneously (Murph and the LTD).

Congrats on the new XJ anon! Sounds like you're up in Finland? How is the off roading scene up there? It's not locked down tight like Norway is, right?

GOD those tires are the best in the snow. I got a used set for my DD and even though they were 2 years old at the time, nothing could stop those tires. One year a blizzard dropped 3 feet of snow overnight and I still made it to work just fine.

>>17431005
Are your brake lines ok at least?

>>17434803
While Burbs are a bit heavier, the extra weight is in the back so the weight balance is largely improved. Buddies with pickup trucks have to use 4x4 much more than I do simply because there's no weight over the drive wheels.

...but then again I run the risk of burying myself in the mud/sand, where my old YJ would mostly skirt about on top.

Moral of the story?
>There is no perfect off roader
>There is no wrong way to offroad

Thanks, just ordered the new rear leafs today, so much cheaper to order from germany compared to getting from here. First I just had to figure out whether I have Chrysler 8.25 or Dana 35 for the U-bolts, I think it was Dana, well see in a week.
Im not that familiar with the local offroad culture. They do have some tracks for rock climbing and such i think. We do have Freedom To Roam
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_to_roam
But i dont know how that goes with cars. I guess its okay as long as you dont cause any damage to property or lands, atleast around here you can just go around wherever the hell you want as long as you´re not an asshole.
I mean, atleast i havent gotten into any trouble going around on forest trails and such.
>>
>>17435197
You really ought to plan on gutting that Dana 35 though, it's just too weak.
>>
>>17435466
Thats what i´ve read sadly, atm. Its not really possible, but I might consider the swap in the future.
