Picked this up a few weeks ago for 5k. Definitely overpaid but I really wanted it. No regrets... so far.

My NB has these plastic trim things around the headlights because it's "special" and the paint is fading on them

Can you just peel them off and respray them or do you have to bake the whole light?

Decided after having my miata for nine years that im gonna slap a trubo on it. I've started looking into all the support mods I'm gonna need and im specing stuff out. There's so much info to absorb its crazy.

Planning to have my cooling system and clutch done by the end of that summer. Then I'm looking at megasquirt.

Got laid off kind of unexpectedly Friday so most of my plans are going to have to be put on hold. Now that I have the free time I'd like to try out some paint correction though. Mostly just removing swirls and a little oxidation. Anyone have any tips for single stage? I was thinking of picking this up to try https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002654I46/ref=s9u_simh_gw_i2?ie=UTF8&fpl=fresh&pd_rd_i=B002654I46&pd_rd_r=GA7SRCEWKH7BKR6F9EF1&pd_rd_w=G0h1R&pd_rd_wg=kfbKj&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=&pf_rd_r=01WJN1S5B1AVEXXMZRX9&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=781f4767-b4d4-466b-8c26-2639359664eb&pf_rd_i=desktop

How many miles? Did guy you bought off have plenty of service records?
>>
>>17404641
130k miles. I'm the 4th owner and the previous was an old guy who barely drove it but had a lot of preventative maintenance done to it:
- new cooling components
- new alternator
- belts
- shifter rebuild
- all fluids
- tires

The first owner put 100k miles on it but it seems like they did alright maintenance as well because it runs pretty well as far as I can tell.

I was skeptical of the miles but its the top trim with the 6 speed and torsen diff so I couldn't resist.

I paid 6k for a top trim NB with the 6 speed and torsen diff (and also the 16" enkeis and nardi wheel). With 40k miles.

Should have paid a few hundred more, but there was curb rash on one of the wheels and the tires were bald.

Still sorry about how much you paid

Would this be an okay miata to buy? I've only had one car before.
https://cleveland.craigslist.org/cto/6154105148.html
I'd only plan on having it for 2-3 years, I just want something to learn to wrench on and maybe take to the track. It seems to me a good car aside from the rust, I don't know if that would be too much of a problem.
>>
>>17405326

To make sure that you damage your paint the least amount, you should degrease your car to remove all the waxes and shit, then clay bar it until it feels smooth. Then use a mild cutting compound with an orbital buffer and wax right after with whatever brand you want and a fresh cotton pad.

it needs nothing special, most of the major components are shared with econobox Mazdas, and of course the NA and NB make for 26 years worth of production so there are parts everywhere. You can get most wear items like pads, rotors, clutches and gaskets from local auto parts stores. If you want to make your Miata exceptionally fast or reliable, it's very easy shopping online too. They also come apart very easily with a handful of metric sockets and resources are all over the Internet to help you do nearly anything you want.

The hardest thing to get is probably a hard top, since there are less of them than there are Miatas.

I originally made my own thread to brag about my deal but never posted to miata general so here's my story:
I bought a '91 miata off this rich old guy who was dying of leukemia and wanted to give the car to someone who would drive it. It was listed for 1500 but due to travel expenses he dropped it to 900. the guy was super nice and it only has 83000 miles.
Though I went against /o/'s advice and stickerbombed the dash. I know it's boyracer as fuck but My friend Paige and I bond over it so I'm pretty happy. Got my akina speedstars slap today.

forgot to mention, it's not without problems. It got hit by a 4-wheeler so the trunk's a little off. but not dented. and it got swiped at some point. The guy put too much bondo where the initial impact was so I was thinking of replacing the whole door, and the power windows are off-track, but those are easy fixes for a 900 dollar fucking miata.

Reroute was a thermostat reloacation kit off some guy from a mx5 forum and a 1.6 thermostat housing. I used length of ally tube with tig weld beads on each end, and a few 90° elbows.

The radiator is some no name brand Chinese garbage off eBay.

I dont know anything about miatas but if they have a hydraulicly operated clutch, that would be it. Failing master/slave cylinder or a leakage of hydraulic fluid.

If its cable operated then idk, maybe the cable needs to be adjusted. Could be something entirely else also but in my experience id say its one of those two.

Or ya know, your tranny is just totally fecked m8

Anyone with experience driving a NA with a torsen 1 vs a torsen 2?

I don't understand the purpose of the torsen 2. From what I read it has decel bias, so it locks on decel. Why would anyone want this?

I want that shit to lock up when I'm flooring it.
>>
>>17417246
If his slave cylinder failed he wouldn't be able to get in gear. It sounds like the shifter was in gear but it wasnt doing anything.

>>17416672
Thats a weird one, especially since you say it was fine afterwards. Could be a clutch issue but i vaguely remember reading about an issue where the shift forks can get fucked up somehow and the shifter wont work properly. It's odd though that it was just that one occurence.
>>
>>17417323

Ah yeah youre right. If he can get into gear its 100% not a hydraulic issue, unless he miraculously had the exact RPMs needed to do so without a working clutch - basically fuck all chance of that happening twice in a row so he can cross that off the list.

Any recommendations on getting a little more power for merging and comfortable highway driving?

Top end power goal around 160hp
>>

For 160 hp you're either gonna need a NB swap, a supercharger, or a small turbo. You're not gonna make that naturally aspirated out of your 1.6

Your "highway cruiser" is going to "cruise" at 3500rpm. Not its strong suit.

Well since you have the short nose crank, you might as well swap it. It's a matter of time before your keyway gets all janked. The LE5 is a cool swap, apparently yields 200 hp 200 tq with intake, exhaust, and a tune.

How is your oil burn?

Related question for everyone: I'm at 206k miles and have pretty significant oil burn. Especially on downshifts. (I can see a decent cloud come out of the back when I do downshift.) Also I for sure have a rear main seal leak but it's not something I can fix right now.

Oil recommendations?

Well, I usually have to top it up with a 1/3rd of a quart every 2k miles or so, but it doesn't blatantly consume oil like that. The only times I've seen smoke coming from my exhaust while driving are in the winter or when I let the intake manifold suck on some seafoam.

I'm not sure what to tell you, homedawg. Your cylinders may be "wallered-out," your rings may be worn, or any number of thangs.
>>
>>17422371
Mine gives a little oil burn at high revs (over 4.5k) because old piston rings

Might try staying low in rev range for a week or two and see if it helps. If it does your rings need replaced

24k is for the open diff model. I think the LSD equipped one is 29k? It's still the best drivers car out there for around 30k imo

>>17425877
I can vouch for personal, I had a vinyl wrapped one and it still looked and felt way higher quality than the nrg my buddy had

ah, I actually have 2 project NBs that I'm gonna get rid of if I get an ND. I'm in the market for a new daily and the size wouldn't be an issue for me, as most of the people who daily miatas in this thread know.
>>
How does a Miata drive in the european winter? Can you keep it under control in snow?
>>
>>17426103
Just get snow tires and an LSD. You'll be able to get through anything less than 4-5 inches. It's really controllable in the snow

The power windeos always go out on NA miatas, it's not a sign of more electrical issues. It probably needs new regulators

I should've mentioned mine is a '91 NA6

Some retard did a r12 to r134 conversion on it without replacing the drier, condenser or even the compressor. The compressor on it right now is a new aftermarket denso meant for r12 refrigerant. Whenever the compressor clutch disengages, it starts spinning backwards for like 2/3rds of a turn but I have no idea what this could mean. bad check valves?

>>

Mate if horsepower is of any serious concern to you then maybe the miata isnt for you. It's barely a 15 whp difference between the 1.6 and 1.8. It's just not what the car is about.

>>17432401

I guess it's not that much of a concern but
Why not have that extra horsepower? Why not have that extra bit more fun? If horsepower was of any real concern I could just get some beamer or merc that has 200+ for the price
But the miata just seems so fun
>>
What to price two NBs non running
Both are 1999 AE with nardi wheels and leather seats, but both were wrecked (ran when I got them but they sat while life kicked my ass and don't run anymore). Not sure about Torsen diff on one but I'm assuming they both have.

First
>all primered by previous owner but spotted with rust, mostly surface but some bubble
>missing some panels
>hard top primered
>71k miles but yeah not running

2nd
>no hard top
>frame is straight but front end is smashed
>118k mi

Both cars were meant to be consolidated. I won't separate them and would like to get them listed at $1800 on Craigslist and $1500 for my local Miata group. Is this too high or low? Pretty much all I've done before I they sat was put a bunch of black ice trees off the rear view mirror.
>>
>>17435867
The miata is fun. What I'm saying is that the hp difference should not be a deal breaker for you. Honestly, in my experience the 1.6 is more fun to drive despite being slightly less powerful.

It's small and light and you sit on the ground so it feels faster than it is and carving a mountain pass is delightfully scary. It's only when you go to overtake on the highway that you wonder why you took the highway instead of some country backroad.

The trunk doesn't fit all the groceries, it's a convertible which you either love or fear, it has every form of oversteer possible in fatal doses, it does 4500rpm at 60mph, the tire and body roll is akin to a Buick landyacht and a safety feature to remind you that you will fuck up and go off a cliff in flames, the brakes are anemic, it's old enough to qualify for vintage tags, the AC will probably be dead and can't be recharged, the roof is vinyl and either hot or freezing, and you will not get points from anyone but boomers who had MGs and carfags who have actually driven one.

That said, nothing handles the same outside of go-karts and formula cars. You either live with it or save up for a golf because nothing else rwd in any price range compares.
