In older cars, isn't the trick to turn on A/C so that the extra A/C electric fan is also on? That pulls more air through the radiator. In my older car, that is enough to make the difference between overheating and running hot.

Depends on the car. Typically the engine will run hotter bc it needs to both run the compressor and power the car. Not to mention, the AC condenser is usually ahead of the radiator which will heat up whatever air the fans pull through. Some of the drivers just turned on their heaters full blast that day.
