Not exactly cheap but it's cheaper than buying the tiny bottle of headlight restorer as a temporary fix
>get bottle of compound
>slather it onto buffing pad
>use buffer on headlights until crystal clear
>finish it off with a layer of wax
I've only ever done this with a buffer, not really an amazing trick but it seems to work better than any headlight restorer i've used

>400, 1000, and 2000 grit wet sand paper
>Can of uv clearcoat
>$15 max
>Wet sand with 400, then 1000, then 2000 until white and smooth
>Dry it
>Finish light off with the clearcoat
>Headlights stay clear for a year or two if not more
Gasoline and steel wool is based for removing paint.
