so I just recently bought an XJ and I was wondering If I'd need to modify anything besides the suspension to lift it. I'm only looking for maybe a 3" lift, since I'm not going X-TREEM ROCK CRAWLIN' with it. something like pic related (which is apparently a 3" lift on 31" tires). would I need to extend brake lines any? googles giving me conflicting answers. looking at
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ROU-670N2-Rough-Country-3IN-84-01-Jeep-Cherokee-XJ-Suspension-Lift-Kit-w-N2-0/141943974326?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D41376%26meid%3De72d4436a6e8471eb80ea45aaf66549c%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D6%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D262736443775

since its a full kit. been watching youtube videos of people doing it and it seems straightforward enough.

What's funny is that extreme rock crawlers actually go for less lift, to keep center of gravity low. It's the mall crawling bro trucks that love the 12" of lift to go with their 24" rims and stretched mud tires...
>>
>>17385163
Didn't know that. You'd think you'd want the axles higher off the ground, no? There's not much in the way of crawling around here anyway. Mostly just backwoods roads and muddy ass trails.

And prarie. Lots and lots of open prarie.

Well lift doesn't make the axles clear rocks better, larger tires to that. So they do a little lift then trim the fuck out of the fenders to clear the large ass tires. Lift does help move the body higher from the axles to clear larger tires.

'04 TJ Sport reporting in. Just arrived in Michigan driving out of central Indy on my way back home to Minnesota. About to hit 3k miles on my fun journey. Didn't get to do some of the trails I wanted to go on, and I broke the linkage on my transfer case, so that cut things short. Thankfully I'm in 2wd until I can get it home and fix it up.

First time poster.

Just inherited this from my brother. 98 4 door with the 4L. I love it, and I'm starting to do research into what mods are popular. Lot of folks saying I gotta get the KnN intake and the throttle body spacer and a new manifold.

I'm not really into the Horsepower as much as low end torque. Where should I look for getting an extra bump out of it?

Also deep amethyst pearl mustardrace

What's the benefit of one? I know the claim is like 8hp and 2mpg increase, but other people say that the heat shields are garbage/bump the hood/let dirt in, you name it.

Are you talking about the full tube kit, or just the square filter for the intake box?
>>
>>17393742
Sorry, didnt mean for a jeep. Just meant the air filters in general. I have one on all my vehicles. The cost alone makes up for it, you pay more upfront but they go a long time without needing to be cleaned. Compared to a standard air filter which should be replaced ablut every 3k miles.
>>
>>17393808
Is the life of the filter the only benefit, or do you get longer lasting tanks too?

Lift, tires, slip yoke eliminator, skids, winch bumper/winch, seats out of a ZJ, rust repair, gears, lockers, and I'd just about bet it needs a new heater core. Also change every fluid ASAP.
>>
>>17394176
They let through small particulates even though it's an oiled filter. It's the main reason they can claim a power increase. Weave on the filter is larger than on a typical paper filter so it flows better.

>>

Already gotten fluids and damaged hoses replaced. It came with a 3" lift, not getting a winch.
>>
>>17394502
>not getting a winch
Seems like a pretty quick definite dismissal of something that can make a huge difference. And that Jeep does not have a three inch lift.
>>
>>17394529
Brother told me it was 3, he could be full of shit though.
I guess the reason I'm not jumping to the winch is because I want to make this car primarily daily driver. I can imagine how much of a lifesaver it is in a jam off road, but my needs aren't there yet. Which i get that the point of this thread is off roading, I just figured it was a good place to take my questions given the vehicle
>>
>>17394564
If the amethyst in the picture is yours, your brother is either full of shit or also got lied to. Pic related is only two inches of lift, and judging by wheel gap yours is stock. And yeah my list was geared toward offroad readiness. For DD, I still suggest the ZJ seats, rust repair, and checking into the heater core. Additionally, speakers, head unit, probably head liner repair, cowl intake is better than k&n and you don't suck up hot air, and check into your door jamb wiring as they tend to be fucked.
>>
>>17394617
I appreciate the suggestions. Definitely wanna sand off some rust and touch up the paint here and there. Good to know about the jamb wiring. Driver side lock switch can only lack all 4 doors, not unlock. Have to lean to the passenger side for that.

What kind of heater core problems are common in these? I just had to get the thermostat removed for the summer, getting jammed up and not circulating coolant.
>>
>>17394714
Probably should have just popped in a new thermostat, they're under ten dollars. The heater cores leak, steaming up windows on warm rainy days, and during the winter if you're not running the defroster, plus you have to breath coolant, and will rust through the passenger floor pan. The door lock issue is either failed master switch, or failed passenger switch module. Mine had the issue that the window switches worked intermittently from master switch but fine at each door, and lock switch not at all. Replaced master and all windows work as designed, but locks still dead. Replaced passenger module, locks work as designed. Oddly enough my jamb wiring was all perfect, but still had speaker, lock, and window issues. The speakers were from the previous owner twist and taping aftermarket speakers in. And since you're bringing up issues, at minimum, you need to flush the cooling system because they're known to be shit and clog easily. You may need to replace your radiator depending on how neglected it is. Also, replacing the factory electric fan was one of the best decisions I made. It worked but was a bit out of balance. Turns out it had some fucked up current over draw and was causing the rough running issue I was having on warm day restarts.

>>
>>17394791
definitely new thermostat by august. what's the advantage of the ZJ seating you'd mentioned? comfier? lighter?

Part of me is thinking about biting the bullet and finding some aftermarket leather seats for it
>>
>>17395000
The ZJ seats are comfy and robust, easy to find, and usually cheap. The big benefit comes from the fact that XJ seats are garbage. They're uncomfortable, and they always break, making you have a nigger lean while driving even if you're white. Aftermarket seats aren't a bad idea if you want to spend some cash. But with a great cheap option available, most choose to go that route.

Say i was looking to build a fairly inexpensive 4x4 for use as a work vehicle/light offroader. We're talking crawling forest trails, not rocks or desert or shit, and as far as work it'd probably be pulling timber offroad and pulling a sub-5k# trailer on-road. What'd be the best base vehicle to start with? Reliability, ease of service, and cheap parts are priorities.

Back when I had my YJ I would blast through mud pits. After I was done I would always throw a lawn sprinkler underneath for a few hours, set to travel back and forth. As long as I got to it before it caked on most of it would fall right down.

Bro in law recommended just an ordinary sprinkler for 30 minutes each on the front, middle and back but I thought maybe a giant system that could cover it all in one go would be neat. Guess a moving sprinkler would be fine too.

Why? "Because i like them" is a perfectly valid response, but that money could've been better spent elsewhere

Again, why? They're the same price with similar equipment, and are more capable from-the-factory than a 1500, plus they're still available with a manual transfer case.

the FJ weighs about 800 lbs less and a wheelbase about a foot shorter, but the build quality and reliability is far superior. one of my buddies has a z71 two door hoe and its an absolute pig. my sister has a z71 cateye and it is also an incredibly unreliable car. not all chevrolets are, my dads old worktruck was a roundeye chevy and he put 330k on it before selling it, running and driving with no rebuilds and burning no oil.

Wheels and tires. Not even necessarily bigger, just different.
>>
>>17402153
the numbers i had said the 2 door hoe weighs in at 4850 pounds dry. the 2wd model. and the wheelsbase is listed at 111.5-117.5, not sure what models were different there. the FJ has a wheelbase of 105.5 inches and a weight of 4050-4350, presumably due to 4wd and automatic/manual. i would guess mines at 4200. and yes, the build quality and reliability is far superior from my experience. i've thrashed and abused two toyotas, one with 200k+ miles, and have gotten no problems in return. i have DD and not even abused a cateye with the 5.3 with 160k miles and had to make a somewhat large repair almost every year. the chevy had never seen mud or any offroading other than a dirt road every now and then, and the heaviest thing it ever towed was a 87' mastercraft, that my little 216k mile 3.4 towed with ease. other people experience's may differ, but my firthand experience says that toyota makes a much better product than any GM
>>
>>17402209
>the numbers i had said the 2 door hoe weighs in at 4850 pounds dry. the 2wd model. and the wheelsbase is listed at 111.5-117.5
117.5 is the 4 door. 4850 is probably a 2WD 4 door as well.

2WD FJ is 4050, 4x4 manual is 4290, and 4x4 auto is 4295.

>much better product than any GM
How many FJCs have made it to a million miles?
>>
>>17402242
im not sure where you're getting your info, but it seems believable enough, although i would expect the auto fj to have more than a 5 pound difference. but if you have a million mile 5.7 with no rebuilds i would be incredibly surprised. when the 4.0 gets to be the same age, i guarantee a higher percentage of them will still be on the road. also, and extra 1.7 liters for 20 hp? thats pretty pathetic if you ask me. not hating on chevrolet, im just saying that a 4.0 shouldn't even be compared to a 5.7, yet on paper theyre dangerously close.

an extra 20hp that comes in 1500rpm lower. The 4.0, like all modern V6s, makes its high power by screaming up to insane rpm, whereas the 5.7 makes all of that power lower down
>>
My XJ is having a lot of issues with surface rust so I was thinking about repainting it over the summer with Monstaliner which is a type of bed liner. I was going to grind all the surface rust down to bare metal, then prime over it. The rest of the paint I'd just scuff up a bit. It has almost 200k miles and it's been giving me a few problems lately, so does /org/ think it would even be worth it to repaint?
>>
>>17402266
>peak HP/L
Arbitrary metric that means nothing for a 4x4.
Less power per cubic inch makes for a low stress engine that will last longer with less maintenance.
More power per cubic inch means you can make more power at a lower tax cost if you're taxed per liter.
Which do you want owning a 4x4 in the US?
And again, this is peak HP, it only tells a small portion of the story. The 70 ft-lb difference and the RPM difference between peaks tells quite a bit more. The 4.0 you have to wind up to make power. The 5.7 has a flat torque curve and has a significantly wider power band.
>>
>>17402294
>>17402317
while this may be true, it doesn't change the fact that toyota has proven to be more reliable (in my firsthand experience, if you want to argue that) and these vehicles weren't built as competitors. no matter what a 2 door tahoe is outfitted with, the 4.0 is a durable, reliable engine with plenty of hp and torque for the FJ. its not my fault chevy fanboys get butthurt because the FJ is a genuinly good vehicle. it has its cons, dont get me wrong, but it's a solid vehicle.

92-99 old body style (OBS) GMT 400 burbs are known for being sloppy i.e. shit rattles, interior parts will loosen and fall off, IFS likes to bump steer and minor shit like that. But they have a good reputation for off-road capability. The 10 bolt out back isn't a D60 though, so be careful how hard you romp with a full load.

Some general gmt-400 bullshit:

ABS modules like to break after 100k. Most used OBS chevies have parking/ABS lights on

Steering shaft clunk, usually need to replace the shafts and pitman arms

Doors will randomly lock and unlock themselves

28 spline models will usually have some wear/pitting on the rear shafts

Overall most of the issues I've seen are minor and fIxable and mostly cosmetic. If you're the kind of person who's anal about appearance/wear and tear, after the fifth time re-gluing your third brake light or popping your lock knob back in the socket you'll be ready to drive that fucker off a cliff

I'd look at gmt400 trucks instead - lower GVW, slimmer profile, longer wheelbase, higher tow capacity, bigger aftermarket and you can always buy a used camper shell and rattlecan it

So would this be what's causing my jeep to stumble up hills? Check engine light isnt coming on.
>>
>>17404488
While the GMT400 has cons, the only one you got right was the 10 bolt.

Pitman arm and idler arm, kind of. They're fine as long as the previous owner wasn't running 35s for 20k+ miles and beating on it off road. Under normal driving conditions with occasional off road use and stock size tires, they're easily 200-300k parts. I wouldn't call that an issue.

>shit rattles
The truck itself doesn't. If you leave change and hardware in every compartment you can find, you're going to hear rattles. Can't blame that on the truck.

>interior parts will loosen and fall off
Less common than in other 90s vehicles. Dash will crack at the mount points by the windshield if it's sat with the sun facing it it's entire life. If it was kept in a garage, under a canopy, or under trees, even that isn't an issue. The rest of the interior plastics are great except for the rear fold out cup holder, but that was an issue on GMT800s as well.

>IFS likes to bump steer and minor shit like that
The IFS has damn near perfect geometry and bump steer is entirely nonexistent with stock offset wheels. If you put deep dish wheels on it for "stance" then expect bump steer in addition to accelerated ball joint and wheel bearing wear, but that's true for any vehicle.

>ABS modules like to break after 100k
I've yet to see a single one go out in any of the multiple GMT400s I've dealt with which were all near or over 200k miles. I've seen ONE go out in a GMT800, I wouldn't consider that a common problem for either platform.

>Doors will randomly lock and unlock themselves
You've got a short or you're sitting on the remote. I'd wager it's a short though.

GMT400 trucks have the same GVWR, profile, towing capacity, and aftermarket as GMT400 Suburbans. If you get a single cab long bed, the wheelbase is the same too.
>>
>>17404488
>>17405034
The cons that you didn't hit on that are legitimate are the fuel pump, transmission if 4L60e, starters, and poor clear coat that leads to peeling paint and eventually surface rust on the body.

These are actual issues that appear more commonly in GMT400s than they do in other vehicles.

More commonly than other models does not mean it does not happen in other models.

The clear coat issue is not specific to one model year, it's across the GM truck line for several years.

But okay, I wont mention what problems appear in what proportions. The simple fact that they are possible makes them all equally likely. You're obviously a statistics major since everything is either 0%, 50%, or 100% likely. Must be pretty easy.
>>
>>17405294
There is quite a bit of middle ground between an elderly couple garage keeping a vehicle and taking it down a dirt road twice a year and a 16 year old parking it out by the road in the sun all day every day, throwing 35s on stock suspension and then beating the absolute piss out of it in a mud pit every weekend.

Stop making things out to be black and white when they are not.

Did anything about my first post cause you to believe the info I posted came from my own personal experience with a single vehicle, or is that a conclusion you inexplicably come to yourself? I drive a Toyota. I work on OBS silverados just about every other day, probably around 100 in total

The gmt400 interior will rattle. Front fold out cup holders, glove box lids, door cards. Shit rattles.

Power door lock wiring is a common issue, along with ABS. You don't even need to be a mechanic, just search any forum lmao

As for the rest of your garbage post, obviously if a vehicle is taken care of it will last longer, and keeping stock wheels and tires will put less strain on the suspension, but on offroad threads we don't judge a vehicle's worth by it's ability to drive on pavement with stock suspension and tires.

Nearly all factory IFS systems have "nearly perfect" geometry. The thing you're missing is we don't run them factory. With any kind of u-joint pulls, suspension lifts, knuckle spacers, torsion keys or even body spacers the gmt400 becomes more susceptible to bump steer than similar vehicles would with the same modifications due to a.) the design of the drive axle joints and b.) the GM steering system for those years

>GMT400 trucks have the same GVWR, profile, towing capacity, and aftermarket as GMT400 Suburbans. If you get a single cab long bed, the wheelbase is the same too.

>or is that a conclusion you inexplicably come to yourself?
No, I didn't come to that conclusion at all. But since you bring it up, do you think not owning one and ONLY working on ones that normies bring in gives you a better idea of what issues are most common that people that have owned dozens of them themselves?

>Front fold out cup holders
I can't speak for the 94- fold out cup holder but the slide out in the 95+ does not rattle at all. The rear only rattles if it's already broken, but what doesn't?

>Power door lock wiring is a common issue
No, it's not. Does it happen? Yes. Does it happen more often on GMT400s than it does on the average vehicle? No. Explorers and Expeditions are REALLY bad about the power door locks. These aren't.

>along with ABS
Again, it can happen, it has happened. That does't make it common.

>just search any forum lmao
Are you twelve?

>but on offroad threads we don't judge a vehicle's worth by it's ability to drive on pavement with stock suspension and tires.
That's not at all what I'm doing. Simply pointing out that if you are looking to buy one and it was beat exceptionally by a 16 year old that didn't give a fuck for an extended period of time (as is common for Z71s) then it will suffer from those issues. If it has not been, then it likely will not suffer from those issues.

>The thing you're missing is we don't run them factory.
Buying one with stock tires to put 32" ATs on it will have a different result that buying one with 35s on stock suspension with cut fenders and keys cranked to the stops.

>torsion keys or even body spacers the gmt400 becomes more susceptible to bump steer
Jesus Christ you're retarded. You think a body lift causes bump steer? Please explain the science behind that. This is why I do not bring my person vehicles to "professional" mechanics.

>than similar vehicles would with the same modifications
Entirely false.
>>
>>17405451
They're literally the same thing with the gas tank in a different spot. Besides bed rails or a bed cap pretty much anything that will bolt onto a GMT400 pickup will bolt onto a GMT400 Suburban. The suspension and drivetrains are the same, making the GVWRs and tow ratings the same. Everything from the front doors forward is literally identical.
>>
>>17405431
You've got to accept the fact that being a mechanic gives a you skewed point of view and often causes you to apply logic from other vehicles even when it doesn't really fit.
>>
>>17405134
There's a known common issue with 4.0s where the valves get serious carbon buildup and causes that kind of hiccup under those circumstances. Not saying that's the problem, but it's a possibility. If a full tune up doesn't stop it, try some Lucas fuel injector cleaner.

Frame horns and bumper brackets are different, gvw affects towing capacity, rear spring load affects towing capacity, rear leads are different, just to name a few

Interesting how you initially used your assumption that I was using a personal vehicle to make generalizations as a way to invalidate my argument and now you're using the same situation to validate your own

The wierd thing is it only just started doing this. Had it a about a week and a half now. Only started occuring two days ago. Before this it had a shit battery, so maybe I just need to let it sit unplugged and have it relearn the parameters.

>Interesting how you initially used your assumption that I was using a personal vehicle
Accept I never made that assumption...

>Frame horns and bumper brackets are different
Frame horns are the same between Suburban and pickup of the same GVWR.
Front bumper brackets are the same between Suburban and pickup of the same year.
Rear bumper brackets are admittedly different between Suburban and pickup due to slight differences at the rear of the frame.
GVWRs are the same between Suburban and pickup with the same options.

Why? They are popular vehicles.

>>17405737
People with Toyotas think it's impossible anyone could ever consider buying a Suburban.

Take it to the new thread guys. Fresh for shitposting.
