Does using a cheap offbrand oil affect performance? Are there any cons to doing this?
It doesn't matter, Anon. Your car is a turd.

Thanks buddy, you helped a fucking lot.
can't say i know enough about cars to give you a definitive answer but i would assume the cheaper oil is just worse on the car, maybe have to change it more often

this, less cost means less detergents and additives

If it is chinese oil, and they do sell a lot of barrels of it in the USA, it could be used oil that was filtered.and given a cheap chemical treatment to make some of the grime flocculate out.
Not at all, assuming you change it on time.

Look up UOA's on different brands of oil and decide for yourself.
I personally run Supertech Synthetics in all my shitboxes because it's cheap as chips and meets all current API certifications. My reading suggests that it is not inferior to any other oil on the market and its additive package is sufficient for cars as long as you change it between 5000-8000 miles.
The only oil I'd consider "special" on the market today is Rotella T6 which is great for use in certain turbocharged/high heat applications, but it still needs to be changed at 5000-8000 because no oil filter is gonna be working well past that point anyway.
