Is this a good classic car to buy?

No. Coupes are more collectible
If you have the time and money to do major repairs at least twice a year.

sure, i guess. the good:
-drivetrain will outlast entropy death of the universe
-interior when maintained is surprisingly modern and comfortable.
-timeless styling, imho.
the bad:
-most have serious rust problems
-have fun spending a month chasing down problems in the vacuum system
-electrical system has probably gone to shit
-glacial acceleration
-parts are expensive and hard to find
>w124
the diesels are unstoppable but only their drivetrains, everything else breaks

That's a W123.

The wagon is rare, especially in that condition. Coupes are rare, too...but wagons are generally cooler.
It's easy to work on. Like, stupid easy. Need basic metric tools, except for AC, which is SAE.
The only parts that are hard to find and expensive are the rear self-leveling suspension bits. The rest, easy as pie on eBay and other discount parts suppliers (don't ever pay money for a Uro branded part, however...)
Another poster mentioned vacuum - it is CRITICAL that the vacuum system be working properly on a W123 - controls transmission, emissions, climate control, engine shut-off. Bits aren't pricey, but you really need to take the time to understand the system.
Slow, but the wagons are turbos, so that helps. Not that much slower than the average early 80s car.
Rust can be a problem, like most 30+ year old cars. Look in wheel wells, battery tray, hinge pockets, and trunk. Also, rear window seal in the bottom corners.
I daily drive an 83 W123 - wonderful cars. Major repairs are not common. The drivetrain is smooth and near indestructible. Just maintain it religiously, and it will outlast you.

I went to look at an '85 300TD and this guy claimed on craigslist that it had absolutely NO rust.
And I did enough research on the car before checking it out, to check out the ENTIRE car.
found a HUGE fucking hole due to rust under the passenger foot well.
Old dude wanted $5k for it. lmao

>slow
>boring
>vacuums
>rust
Unless you're willing to do ALL of the following, do not buy one:
>find a rust-free example
>polyurea the undercarriage
>convert all vacuum pumps to electric motors
Otherwise, you're just asking for headaches.
