Oh shit I've actually recently bought a Starlet with the 2E engine, except it's fuel injected. Anything I should know?
>>

>>
>>17359560
its slow.

If you want to go faster;
The engine mounts are a straight swap to any 4A series engine. You can get a Silvertop or Blacktop engine and swap it in (the silvertop is a bit cheaper) good way to make power.

All that said, the 2E is a reliable as fuck engine, the valve stem seals will go later in life, you'll see it burning a little oil as it ages but it wont stop it from running like a champ
>>
>>17359572
I have E90 Corolla with 2E, except its Carburated.
Its over 300k miles now, and its served me good, but as it is it has low compression on cylinder 4 and it runs like a horse with three legs. Can't top 40 mph. Probably not worth rebuilding.
My question is, can I also swap any 4A series engine in straight without fucking with the mounts?
4EFTE is apparently a sure shot since its an E series engine, but I can't find any of those unless for ridiculous price.
But I found a bluetop for 700$ with a partial wiring harness and all auxillary components.
Also, will I need to machine the bellhousing for it to fit and find a stronger adapter plate?

>>17359572 is right, they blow out the valve stem seals and tend to collapse the oil rings on the pistons. This is the result: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoCRXKXiMNo

Old girl had ~220,000 miles when I recorded this, and she burned a valve at 240,000 due to all the burning oil.

Cheap to fix though; Toyota got the block alloy right and you should be able to get away with a glaze-breaking hone and a re-ring. There was hardly any cylinder wear when I was in there.

Slapped on a $200 reman head, a $150 rebuild kit and a $80 clutch, she'll last a while longer lol.

Get €300 a month from commie government for going to college the first year. Got €500 a month extra last year from internship company.
Student loans have a rate of 0.01% last year, this year exactly 0.0%, so they evaporate while looking at them since they keep inflation 2-3%.

My "internship" was nothing more than writing a paper for a company on why they shoud(n't) use some new technique, so I don't really count it as working.
>>
>>17360675
Ah okay, because its exactly the same situation in Denmark, except that the rate is 4% while you are studying, but is 0 procent afterwards currently.
Which doesnt make a lot of sense because students have no money.

They determine a percentage that you have to pay based on your income above minimum wage. If after 15 years you haven't paid it off yet because your income was too low, they cancel the rest of your debt.
Still, the total amount I lent is so low that once I start working, I can pay it off in a couple of years.
Though you can frame the system by following some BS social study, work at mcdonalds for 15 years and never pay anything because you never earned more than minimum.

One guy in my class has a job, they wanted him to get a higher education level. He has a company leased car, but it's an audi a1 with some shitty 1.0 eco engine. Looks tiny next my volvo.

I've seen Renault D4FT (1.2l turbo) blocks for as low as 150 eurobucks online. I'd imagine the regular D4F (found in shit like Clios, Moduses and 2nd gen Twingos) or D7F (8v version of the D4F) would be even cheaper.
>>
>>17361519
I've seen engines for 40-70 pounds, though I'm not sure if they're good for what I'm trying to do.

>>
>>17361560
Honestly pretty much any small ecobox engine will do. They're not too unwieldy because they're physically small and light, and they're usually pretty simple designs.
Plus you could buy a shitbox with a busted engine for peanuts and put the your own rebuilt engine in there.
>>
>>17361165

>spend months looking for an ok shitbox on Craig's list because the one I had at the time was a 1993 corolla as a dd that had a bunch of issues that it wasn't worth fixing at all because if I did it myself it would have costed more than the car is worth
>none of them I had interest in and most of the cars I saw on Craig's list were beat to shit and had major issues like for example "has rod knock but still drives" bull shit like that
>sell my dd for 400 shekels
>I end up using my aw11 as a dd for a while until I saved up more money
>look up on Craig's list same shitty cars that will most likely die on me as soon as I drive it
>few days later my memeR2 gets stolen and dah pohpoh finds it in one piece but life decided to give me a catch
>I got it back with scratches, a dent, stereo was gone and a blown head gasket

>gf starts to be pushy about buying a corolla and at the end saying "but idc if you don't get it"

nothing special, but my first car restoration. Paid 800 for it because low miles
So i thought. Turns out the odometer was busted so god know how many miles are actually on it. I've replaced nearly everything.
Struts all around
New tie rods inner/outer
new radiator
new timing belt/water pump
new air box/New MAF
New ECU
New plugs/cables
New radiator hoses
Alternator rebuild
New belts
New electric fan that adds 20 hp yippie
New tail lights, belt trim and a bunch of small shit.

The heater core pisses coolant and my fan motor is shot, so ill need to rip that interior apart to do that. And I have rust in the rocker and rear wheel well/fender that'll need attention.

But I do love this car. It always starts and I can always fix it with in a weekend

-I would like to learn to wrench on it. Is any of them easy to service?
-Automatic transmission have a bad reputation on reliablity and mpg with neon, cavalier. Is that true?

Have a 1993 Bug that you can buy with 25,000 tacos (~1,400 USD)

I once wanted to engine swap my 1.3L Toyota Starlet. But then I realised, it's fucking stupid. Even simple modding is a far-fetched thing to do as all these Starlet's and Corolla's are just one thing: workhorses. And trust me, they were used as such.

I love my Starlet, but I had no trouble buying another car recently as my Starlet was sold to me for just 800 euros in the first place, and naturally (for this price) it had a lot of neglect that would fuck me in the ass later. It had no dents and was in good condition and that's what I was going for. But now 2 shocks are busted and both my exhaust and radiator are leaking. Because of this leak I ran the engine too hot (these shitboxes don't have too many warning lights) and I fucked my headgasket, which I was luckily able to replace myself for cheap with the help of a good friend.

If you want a fast but reliable Toyota, buy an actual 1.6L car and spend a little more money to buy a good one. Swapping an engine isn't something you just do. You have to do it yourself because it's expensive otherwise. You have to buy an engine which is hopefully not fucked. You might think having the engine mounts in the right place saves you a big headache and that's true, but having to fuck with the wiring and other shit is just a pain in the ass. By all means, do mod your car. But keep it simple with some suspension mods like springs, shocks, strut bars, bushings and sway bars. Your Starlet likely doesn't have power-steering and that only adds to the fun.

I mean, if you had all the time, space, knowledge and money to do an engine swap, you wouldn't be driving a Starlet or a Corolla in the first place, rrright?

How hot does I4 exhaust get? I just patched my muffler with HVAC tape so my fart exhaust doesn't attract cops, it says it's good up to 300F and I put 3 layers on for tensile strength against the air pressure. Will this catch on fire and leave flaming pieces of aluminum in my wake?

Anyways, I just like shitboxes since they're cheap and you don't have to worry about them. DeMuro out of all people actually summed it up decently with the Kia Spectra, though that one's even kinda rough by shitbox standards.
If something breaks, fuck it, get the duct tape.
Someone dings the side in a parking lot? eh, who cares
Drive it a little rough, it'll be fine, and if it breaks, eh, it was cheap, if it didn't break immediately, it already paid for itself.
You don't need to spend a lot to have fun with a car.
>>
>>17368204

The Paseo and Tercel are L platform, while Starlets are P platform.

A 4th-gen Tercel was EL42 while the first-gen Paseo was EL44.

Just out of curiosity, how does everybody feel about their daily? I've been trying to find a comfy daily that isn't severely lacking in amenities but it's really hard to find that on the cheap. What do you look for in a daily? What is your current daily? Do you like it, do you hate it, why?
Pic related, my daily.
>>
>>17368837
How do you feel about vacuum lines?

Also you will be the slowest moving vehicle on any road you happen to occupy, no exceptions.

>What is your current daily?
Mazda 323/Protege5
>Do you like it, do you hate it, why?
It's nice, not the fastest thing on the road but it's fine. Has everything I'm looking for in a car right now and is reliable so yeah, is gud.

If you don't live in the rust belt, get yourself a Mazda 3 or Protege/Protege5.

Guys I have a question, next years I'm probably gonna be getting rid of my Opel Astra GT but I don't want to purchase a new car if it's gonna be standing outside all year, being driven only once a week.
I'm looking for some models that should be relatively safe as used cars, but I don't want it to look like a Renault Twingo ( even though I respect it ), what would you suggest ?
>>
>>17369201
They're probably not bad, but the V6 is so much better, it's not even funny.
>>
>>17369073
If vacuum lines become a problem, is it just a simple remove and replace, or is there more to it?

Otherwise my current daily is already underpowered as hell. As long as I could find a manual 6cyl I think I'd be happy. Any config would probably be better than my shitty old hatchback.
>>
>>17369945
Vacuum lines are dead simple to replace or patch, in theory. In practice, they snake all over the engine bay and under the dash, a leak ANYWHERE will cause the whole thing to losee vacuum, and they're brittle when they're old or it's cold oit so you can accidentally break them when you're doing other work.

To diagnose leaks, at least you can isolate sections of the system at the vacuum hub and narrow down your problem area.
>>
>>17369953
Doesn't sound that hard. How are parts prices? Are there junkyard parts easily available?
>>
>>17369970
Vacuum line can be purchased by the foot at advance or vatozone or wherever. Couplers are dirt cheap. It's all plastic stuff. You don't even need tools except maybe snips to cut it to length, they're friction fit. Parts that run off vacuum can be had from rock auto if they're truly broken.

I'm so embarrassed about my car. don't get me wrong, it's been a fantastic daily and has never let me down mechanically. the 1.6/5spd combo even makes it reasonably fun to hoon around in. it consistently gets 30mpg and shit the fucking ac still works and everything. but it's just so "shitboxy". my door sills and spare tire well are completely rusted out and the front end is totally fucked from a fender bender I had recently. it's impossible to keep clean because I frame houses 50 hours a week and random jobsite dust finds its way inside and out. worst of all, because it's so ugly it makes me look like poor white trash, even though I'm really not. none of my friends want to ride with me. I get weird looks in traffic. I rode out to the local car meet, not to display it but just to check out the other cars, and I saw at least three different people walk past my baby and laugh at it. I love this car, it's been great to me in the 6 months I've owned it and I have no complaints in regards to it being a mode of transportation. I just wish I had something nice that I could show off and be proud of, that others will appreciate and not make me look like a dirty mexican.

Spic here, I've seen lately a lot of banqueteated Renault Clio/Platinas even for free, like srsly people don't wanna tinker with those cars after they fail because "Le baggete engines" , "parts hard to get", "too complicated yiuro engineering" n shit (Like if internet, scrapyards & Clio forums don't exist lol). Meanwhile any VW ubershwaggen unrepairable crap is mainstream and overpriced as fuck. Even the Dieselgate junkers! Like the time some old fag wanted to sell me a 93' vocho "roller" shell for 15mil pesos, A FUCKING SHELL!

Or if you don't want to tinker with yiuro crap and wait a month for parts, go full ñerofag and get a Tsuru, just avoid anything made beyond 1996.

Figured since you guys drive shitboxes you'd be okay with a sporty car with a shitty V6

Maybe you should consider why /o/ is shitting on your car instead of trying to find a safe space.

It's a V6 Mustang, it's not worth sinking money into outside of maintenance.

If you rice it up it'll look like every other 'I wanted to be different' V6 Mustang owner.

1994 Pontiac Firebird
$900
~201,300 when purchased
-Motor rebuilt 36K before that (with papers)
-$300 intake manifold gasket repair (Bringing question to those rebuild papers)
-B&M Megashifter installed
-Wheel Setup on purchase: 165/50R15s front, 275/50R15s rear
-Wheel Setup now (for now): 195/60R15s front, 235/60R16s rear
-Brake pads were welded to the calipers when bought
-Has a hornet nest above the passenger front tire... Though luckily it's abandoned
-Hatch doesn't open
-Driver's door scrapes the front fender on opening, but no other signs of an accident
-Average of 24.7MPG right now, getting it up still

And that's most of it

Guys, eurofag here with a problem.
I'm looking for a solid working used car beneath 5K Euros and I have a serious problem.
I am physically disgusted by modern design that's all streamlined/aerodynamic and want something that has straight lines instead of curved everything.
There are very few exceptions of carves with curves that I find acceptable but a basic bitch Audi A3 is 7K Euros for one that will break down at the end of the week.
I also find a very large aftermarket of parts important because I don't have the skills/equipment yet to work on cars myself.
I have an Opel Astra right now and am fucking sick of it and would prefer to get rid of it before I have to drop 1K on a distribution belt.
What would you guys suggest ?

Anyone here know anything about Golf 2's ?
More specifically, costs to maintain and parts availability. I'd like to think I finally found true love.
>>
>>17380544
>cost to maintain
jack shit, the engines are reliable but watch for rust
>parts availability
as long as you dont look for a rarer model you should be just fine
>>
>>17380562
What can I do to prevent rust on older cars ?
>>
>>17380570
Underbody coating and clean the wheelarches. A lot of shit builds up in there, which can trap water and road salt, leading to those nasty rusted quarter panels often seen on badly kept older cars.
>>
>>17380570
make sure waterways are cleared, clean and coat as best as you can crevices, clean the underside, blackson coating, acting as soon as you see a rust spot, too.
>>
>>17380588
I currently do not have equipment to work on the underside of a car, is this a one time investment or does it need to be done several times ? I'm considering a Mk.2 Golf or something similar as a daily but I'd like to keep it for the next 10 years if not longer. Would anything else besides this undercoating be necessary?
>>
>>17380615
what you need to do the underside can be resumed to a trench in the ground
you'd need to scrape off and treat any rust that has gotten on the steel, and once all of it's done, go about undercoating it.
It needs to be redone on '80s/'90s cars because ecological laws in place dictated what such and such products could be used in car manufacturing, and they had to come up with new products that while ecologic were way uneffective, but we've come full circle now and undercoating products work very well and last a ton of time if done right.
So it's better seen as an investment, especially if it's a rarer model and you're keeping it a while.
>>
>>17380643
I suppose there is no permanent solution for this ?
How many times would I need to have this done ?
Every year ?
Every 5 years ?
Would this be necessary on modern cars ?
>>
>>17380655
>I suppose there is no permanent solution for this ?
For now, no, but as I said, done well, it'll last a fuckton of time.
>How many times would I need to have this done ?
once is enough
>Every year ?
>Every 5 years ?
hell no, it's a long lasting thing
>Would this be necessary on modern cars ?
we'll see in the future if it is but they'll most likely explode their engines before getting to rot anyway
>>
>>17380689
Alright, then this is an investment I'm willing to make, I guess it's gonna be Golf then. Now I just gotta find one that isn't rusted and has been properly taken care of.
>>
>>17380698
with a 5k budget you should be able to afford one in great condition with low miles and even rarer options/trim and you'll have leftover money still
they're also fun because light is right and they have absolutely no E-nannies bar ABS on shit like GTIs
