Anyone got a good recommendation on a code reader? Amazon has some cheap ones but you guys probably have a better idea on where the money can be best spent.

Most auto parts stores will scan your car for free. Can't beat free.
bluetooth OBD2 dongle + Torque app for your phone
i'm not sure what the purpose is of the more expensive scanners except to look for "ghost codes" stored by german manufacturers

Look up the previous archived threads to see what people used successfully.
The ONLY sub $1000 reader that is even semi-passable is the Autel 802.
But really, if you're good enough that you actually need a code reader to work on your car, go on eBay, get a Snap-On Modis or OTC Genesys.
