Just bought a Tundra 10,000lb winch from Canadian tire since it was half off for $300. Once I get home from Montreal I'll probably start working on making a bumper out of a single peice of square tubing and figuring out a bracket to bolt to the frame. I'm considering just keeping this truck and thrashing it for a couple years now since I know I definitely want a crew cab ZR2 S10 but won't be able to afford or even find one for a while. And I'm just assuming crew cab Z71 coloraydos are trash.
my jeep (DD hence the pussy tires)
my old bronco
Moved some cars around off road with the grand Cherokee a week ago in trade for a firebird parts car. Willys hasn't been touched in a month. Looking to take my quad to lbl for a day sometime soon. That is all.
>>17356370
I think they're called Colorados (GMC Canyon)
Fun fact: GM made a V8 Colorado but only in single cab.
>>17356380
Do they still make one? They should. Those trucks arw about as big as older 1500 series trucks.
>>17356379
Lets get a close up of the pimped out grille on that chevy
>>17356402
That's our white-trash-puppy-mill-having neighbors truck. He can't ever park it in his ucking driveway because there are 3x non-running shitboxes taking up space.
>>17356391
Lmao hell no. The old Colorados had the 5.3l V8
The new Colorado (2014 and newer?) meme has either the Duramax V4 turbodiesel or an anemic V6.
>>17356414
Worked with a guy years ago who had a 4 door colorado, 2005 i think. His had a 5 cylinder engine. I fucking laughed when he told me that.
>>17356258
Same. Tundra tested and have it on my Ferd Ranger. 10k lb max rating. Getting the hook through the roller is kinda annoying
I'll take a pic when I get home.

It had great balls. More than the 3.0 ranger engines but less than the current 4.0. The thing sounded really nice and I miss coldstarting it on long winter mornings.
Sold it before any shaft, valve, or head issues came up.
>>17356615
What made you get a modern fish taco? I'd want one but too afraid to bang it up with resale value so I just got a Ranger fx4 and built it up
Probably will sell it in a few years for $5k in rough (but very functional) condition.
This thing is offroad every week or two.
>>17356811
Those Tacos and 4runners hold their value pretty well. Part of the reason I didn't get one instead of my current soccer mom mobile.
>>17356811
Bought a fucked ranger. Pissed me off, so i went out and bought a taco. I figured ill own this truck till it dies. I dont care to much if the outside gets fucked up, aslong as the mechanical shit still works.
>>17356833
A co-worker financed one of those from 2016 for $75 000. He always brings up the fact that he drives a jeep whenever we talk about cars. I don't really talk with him about automobiles anymore...
Also, those modern 4Runners are fucking massive. They're actually longer than my FJ80 Landcruiser and around the same weight, too.
>>17356867
How fucked?
Did you get the 3.0 V6 like some unspoken member of /ORG/? Because that's how people end up hating rangers :^)
>>17356871
Nah it had the 4.0 with 4x4 and single cab. Turns out the motor had low compression. The more i fixed on it the worse it ran.
>>17356871
Yeah my parents have a 2016. Reminds me very much of my GC interior wise except the 4runner has 3rd row seating.

If I was autastic and poor, I'd get a shit Ranger like that and put a 5.0 v8 in it from a cheaper exploder.
I'm new to /org/ and got a 1993 Navara 4x4
I'ts got Cooper MT's on it, and I'm looking at lockers because I've seen the difference they make on the trail.
It's got a C200 rear end and I can't touch lockers for less than $800.
Considering its a 4 banger and I don't daily it, would welding the spider gears be acceptable?

Do it. I absolutely hate engine covers. Shit is so tacky.
>>17357351
Welding the spider gears isn't a good idea unless you don't like being able to steer or like prematurely wearing your tires on the asphalt. Look into a lunchbox locker for your truck, they are cheaper than normal lockers since they only replace the spider gears. Plus they're easy to install with a few common hand tools and an hour of time. They unlock when you turn, so they help keep your tires alive longer and still give ultimate traction off road when needed.
I'm thinking of getting into offroading. is it reasonable to offroad something I DD? I can only afford one car
>>17357650
yes
the majority of people who wheel do so with their dd
many changes since this photo, but it's the only pic I have.
>>17357659
manual or auto? my brother told me awhile ago that auto is actually better for offroad. he's got a lifted wrangler but I'm pretty sure he doesn't do anything with it.

Unless there are really cheap reliable American 4WD's and cheap parts then it really isn't for you at the moment, it can be an incredibly expensive hobby, especially for a DD'er. Could $3k even get you anything made before 1990 that doesn't have 2 dozen issues with it in the US?

>Slight oil leak from cam cover gasket
Had that issue with my 105 when I bought it, forgot how much the mechanic charged to fix it but it was a bit. Also seeing as it has a sunroof the first thing I would check would be the roof and the interior around the sunroof for rust, really common problem on all Yotas with that option.

I want to learn it all myself but I don't even have a garage or anything. The local mechanic here at least will lend you their shop basically and you can save a heap using their tools and shit to fix stuff yourself or at least help, would do this if I work hours wouldn't get in the way.

Fuel is the no.1 complaint, fuck these things are thirsty.

>>17358866
Mechanic who is also into 4WDing looked at it and said to drive another 500km on it first, apparently the hub housings have a habit of sealing themselves back up from time to time, if it's still leaking by next weekend I'll get him to fix it. Comfy ride but man oh man, I swear it could roll if I turned hard at 40km/h, that's how soft and spongy it is. Maybe the suspension needs replacing.
Yeah snapped the pic a few minutes ago,I could get better pictures but the driveway is cramped at the moment and had a few drinks so cbf backing it out. Yep am ausfag, public holiday today wew (sucked in WA cunts).

I have no idea what the price would be but they are fairly cheapish, not even sure what the process would entail whether they would replace the lot or just fix the leak. Love smashing speedbumps and shit too, literally the first thing I did when I got the 105 home was go out the back of town in the bush and smash through 1ft water ruts on the dirt roads. I'd have to ask them as I have no idea man, but a lot of people who have used these guys for decades told me not to bother with the other 20 mechanics in the region for a reason. Yeah those repair kits seem like the way to go, if you are taking all that shit off may as well replace it while you are there, plus experience has taught me that when you start taking shit off, you notice more and more shit that needs replacing.

>>17360310
Sheeit mines a 35l. I wanted the pro, but i did not want to pay the price tag. This was my first 4x4 and i figured it will get beat up.
>>17360350
Shit, for the price dealers or private parties are asking for the Pro tacomas you can build yours into a better truck and still have some cash left over.
I bought the Pro only because I got very, very lucky while searching for used Tundras. I bought private party, cash, truck had 5k miles, from a seller who wasn't trying to capitalize on the fact that the pro's are in hight demand at more than MRSP.
His first buyer backed out and I got on an airplane to go buy it the next day.
Looking at a jeep with 3.55s running 35s. Seems ludicrously low, my last tj had 3.73 with 35s and some minor power mods and premium made it fine, but it seems like 3.55s would be too little.
Thoughts? I'm losing sleep over this even though I already have five vehicles. Arrgh.

Yeah duh. I'm debating whether it's worth it. I really liked my old XJ with 4.10s and 32s so I think 4.88 would be good, but it's a huge expense on top of a questionable 4x4. I mean if the gears were done I wouldn't even hesitate.

Going to take it to another shop for another look and quote just because. Just started happening today.
Ive only used 4x4 a few times and am not really knowledgeable when it comes to 4x4 parts. But i can do manual labor to an extent.

My tj
>>17365508
they're more unstable if you're retarded
t.retard
Anyway, if you use them properly, they're they only kind of lift you can use when stuck in mud / water. They're a self recovery tool and it's best to jack up the stand connected to a wheel housing, put it on jack stands / wood planks / etc. And then drive it off whatever you are stuck in.
Times I have needed a hi-lift jack:
>stuck in deep mud
use a rock or your placemat as a surface for the hilift
>skid plate balancing on a rock
use your jacks to lift the front wheel, put the wheel on a large rock or multiple plants of wood, drive off. gay rage jacks don't work high enough
>lifting a fallen tree
get the lift up, then use the winch to pull it out of the way
>changing a flat tyre
etc

Thoughts on the idea of throwaway 4x4s? By that I mean dirt-cheap rigs that you buy, don't upgrade, and just wheel the shit out of them until they die.
>>17367615
>i don't understand
>nigger
Looks like you understand just fine.
>>17367621
Implying all 4wds aren't throw away, buy cheap 4wd, upgrade enough to make decent off road, then beat it to shit. Scrap/partout then buy another one and start the process all over again.
Unless you keep the same brand/model then you can keep moving the expensive bits to the next one.
>>17367701
All vehicles are limited-life, but by throwaway I'm talking rigs that may only last a season or two. Rigs that aren't even worth maintenance.
>>17361823
I thought those cables were cracks in your windshield.
>>17367621
where do you live
>>17367945
Michigan. I could realistically buy cheap shit at the beginning of summer, wheel it through summer and fall, and sell it in late fall for more than I paid.
>>17367703
>maintenance optional
Unless you'd like your rig to leave you stranded, i'd recommend doing maintenance.
Though I could see myself buying an old as shit 1 ton domestic with a million miles and a gas V8 and lifting it with long ass shackles/maxed torsion keys and letting it get trashed until things got to the point where i'd junk it and salvage usable parts for the next build.
Back when my county didn't have smog, my dad and I did similarly with mustang IIs and early foxbodies. We went through 6 actual registered cars before opting to let it all go and turn japanese. We couldn't stomach doing the same with Z's.
>>17367773

>>17366460
Nice 4Runner. Is it comfy? I've never ridden in one before.
>>17368049
>thinking I'd ever take the rig anywhere on its own
I'm talking about a rig that's not worth insurance and plating. Get an ORV sticker and trailer it when it needs to be moved long distance. Why do work on a vehicle that's likely going to die within 100miles anyway?
>>17366466
But did yours have sweet Corolla seats in it!
>>17368191
Would something that would die that quickly even be worth the buy-in? I'd want to get something that at least could give parts to salvage, I wouldn't choose some $250 semi-functional 90s mid-size SUV like a trooper or montero. Even the shittiest truck is worth some gear oil, engine oil, and brake shoes.
IMO, there's better shit to throw a veritable handful of cash at than a cheap DGAF trail rig.
>>17368255
A ~$500 4x4 can easily be worth that much in parts. Even if the it decides to put a new window in the side of the block, you're still looking at a transmission and two differentials, plus whatever's left as steel scrap. I've been looking at a first-gen Ranger near me. Everything works, just needs a return line because the current one is pissing fuel.
>>17368231
>>17368304
I saw two white girls in crop tops and those stupid Nike hats and aviator sunglasses pulling out of Dutch bros in a brand new, perfectly clean TRD 4Runner with about a 3 inch lift and those dumbass rock sliders with sharp steps sticking off them. Bright white with black 20in wheels and a drake sticker on the back glass.
I admit I raged for a few seconds.
so, would pic related be good for babbys first offroading rig? its either a 98 or an 01, I cant remember which atm. uncles selling it to me for $1200. mechanically nothing really seems to be wrong with it. when he first got it it needed some work though (IIRC, brakes and a new thermostat). the dash gauges will randomly stop working every once in a while, but smacking the dash brings them back so I'm guessing its just a loose ground somewhere. also, when he killed the battery on it (because he left the lights on), it wouldn't hold an idle for a while. had to sit in it with my foot on the gas for ~15 minutes. after that it was fine. not sure if that's just a jeep thing or what.
also, the clutch feels really heavy. at least in comparison to my toyota. again, not sure if thats just a jeep thing or if its an actual issue.
>>17369072
probably should have mentioned its a 4.0 with a 5-speed. he says when its cold out (below zero) it wants to not go in gear for a few minutes until the tranny's warmed up. all I got from google on that was "deal with it", so...
>>17369072
>>17369080
Not bad. The 'wouldn't hold an idle' thing was probably a weak spark due to low system voltage. Had he left the jumper cables connected for a few minutes that wouldn't have been an issue. Fix the dash ground and throw a new set of spark plugs in and you'll be innawoods in no time.

>>17369760
>>17369137
Lol just bought it today. It's wierd having a vehicle where everything just werks. Goddamn AC and cigarette lighter even work. Only two consistent problems I've noticed while driving it. One is the aforementioned heavy ass clutch pedal, but again that just might be I've got a bad case of bitch legs. The other is that once it gets up to speed it has a tendency to wander around the road a little bit if you don't watch it. Might just be the tires need balancing (it's been sitting for ~2 months on old studded winter tires). Also the battery was dead again. Might have something drawing power (moneys on the aftermarket radio).
>>17372943
modern 4runners are larger than the old land cruisers. they're matching the sizes of the pigfat j100s
>>17372970
1>5>3>4>2
If you ignore price.
>>17373360
Nice. Tires were probably on the upgrade list anyway. My money's on you skipping leg day for the clutch situation, and the aftermarket radio or just a shit battery could be the cause of it being dead again.
>>17373360
Better get that front end checked out before you find out why they call it death wobble.
>>17369266
Yeah. I have a feeling that I'm going to keep this truck now. Eventually do a SAS, box the frame, and probably just swap a crew cab on. I've heard ZR2 frames aren't the best, and for my end goal of a crew cab 6ft bed the frame would have to be lengthened anyway.
Saw this cool thing in Gananoque, Ontario last friday. It had euro plates on it.

>>17375273
Hrm.
Well, reading up on it it doesn't sound like what Im experiencing. It just tends to pull one way or another depending on which way the road slopes. And the steering itself is a bit touchy. It might just be because I'm not used to power steering anymore since my Toyota had a manual rack.
>>17375340
ayyyyyy nice ferd
do you rub on the front fender wells?
>>17375345
>t might just be because I'm not used to power steering anymore since my Toyota had a manual rack.
that's my guess as well
theres no second guessing the death wobble
mine would go into fuckin chaos mode after i would hit a bump. the front end would shake so bad that the tires would chirp
>>17375350
Only in reverse do the tires make contact with the lip on the front bumper. It squats down pretty low. Going forward again it picks back up and doesnt rub anything, even at full lock.

I did some dumb stuff to my truck for a road rally.
I did get 14.5 mpg on the ride home, up from 12, so is it really dumb?
>>17375701
depends, how far was your drive?
this would be pretty fucking stupid if it was only a hundred miles or two but if it was a lot more than that it makes sense, even if it's ugly as
>>17375711
The whole day was about 400 miles or so, maybe more. The rally was from 9 am to 11pm, and i got home around 3 am. I got 10 or so mpg during the rally, 14.5 on the highway driving home.
It was a lemons style rally (scavenger hunt).
I didnt really do it for mileage, I did it as a costume.
>Hypermiler 2500hd
>>17375711
If you do the math, (25*14.5 - 25*12) the extra 2.5 mpg gets me an extra 60 miles to a 25 gallon tank (300 miles to 360).
Thats 20% more range, or an extra hour of driving, which isn't that dumb.
I was actually shocked, i didn't think it would work that well.
>>17376053
It'd be even better if you built a kammback cap for it, but from the first pic it looks like you use it for truck stuff so it may not be worth it.
>>17375988
A hypermiler-worktruck isn't as crazy as it may sound. There's two guys over on ecomodder that have done exactly that, one with an F350 getting ~22mpg, i think, and the other has a Ram 2500 w/Cummins/6speed/2wd getting well over 30mpg.
>>17375345
Death wobble isn't something that just happens all the time. It takes plenty of neglect on front end components, then one day, BAM! You hit a pothole or a bridge transition, and your fucking steering wheel forms a mind of its own with only one goal: to kill you. I'm not trying to scare you, I'm just trying to scare you. Seems like nothing until it happens to you. And unless you're dick kickem with balls of steel, you may just shit yourself. Get a mechanic (a good one) to check the entire front end, and fix fucking everything he suggests. Not saying pay him to fix it, but fix it.
