Welcome to Classic Car General, I fucked up the first posting edition.

Bring your classic and lets all get rust in our eyes together.

>Cars are considered classic at 25 years old

>Everybody has their own taste, enter if it's of age

>Post your classic, your work on it, and get advice

>Any and all discussion about classics welcome

>Rust is a bitch, and not for the faint of heart; tread lightly

>You will inevitably spend twice your budget, no exceptions

>That classic you're eyeing on Craigslist probably needs a shit ton of work

I don't think I can get the engine today. I got called into work.

Went to a car cruise yesterday and remembered that my truck needs a new radiator or fan shroud

Good news. The old girl passed smog. Now she's ready to register. Next urgent thing I gotta fix is the driver window. It's not broken but the glass fell off so it won't go up or down.
>>
>>17355551
Where do you live that a truck that old needs to be smogged?
>>
>>17355886
Probably California
>>
>>17355889
I assume so, but the how the fuck would a truck like that pass the stringent California standards.
>>
>>17355960
Lean the carb out, retard the timing and have a good condition cat
>>
>>17356047
Lean produces lots of NOx. But if I remember correctly, it's easier for a converter to clean of NOx than unburned HC.

I didn't really have any evidence to support it, but I figured that California emissions were too strict for most old cars to pass.

Would a brand new, rolled off the factory floor truck in 1990 pass modern California emissions standards? Or does it have it to be adjusted like you said?
>>
>>17356122
California emission tests are based on the year the vehicle was manufactured.
So a 1990 only has to pass (California standards for) 1990 limits.
If it was a 49 state vehicle that was brought into California, you have to spend a stupid amount of money to add 1990 California emission equipment.
>>
>>17356223
Okay, makes sense. Fucking California emissions. How do enthusiasts even have fun there?

Hey I think I got my pcv issue solved, For whatever reason the previous owner made an adapter to use the vacuum advance in the pcv / brake booster port. Then the port for the vacuum advance was capped off. I think edelbrock makes grommets for their valve covers to fit a pcv valve.
>>
>>17358364
The interior definitely needs some work, but I don't think it would be too difficult to get what's missing from the junkyards.

As for the engine, the car originally had a 305, but he replaced it with a 350 from another Caprice. The engine in the pictures is what's in it now.
>>
Having trouble with my e30. After doing timing belt water pump thermostat cam seal etc upon purchase I've developed an awful wandering bouncy thrashy idle. I'm making my own door cards from MDF and adding speakers and a so much needed pocket in Citroen 2CV.
Upon removing the old door cards the retainer clips were stiff or simply broken (the cards flapped before I took them off) and I have to replace the said clips.
On the picture you can see the current retainer clips which are hard to get and I'm curious do you have any recommendations as to what kind of clips to use instead of originals or any other way to fix the door cards to the door.

Alternator bracket and it would've been a dealer-only part when the truck was nearly new. Now it's likely to be salvage-only though you might ask at a dealer just in case but GM doesn't keep obsolete shit around like they used to.

What car cleaning products do you all use? I washed my car and used Meguiar's Rubbing Compound on every body panel. I've never used it before and prior to the paint was very dull. Needless to say it's some damn good shit.

>>
I'm kind of sad no one had anything to say about my Polara ;_;
>>
>>17363159
Your paint must have been really bad for compound to make it look better. Meguiars is good stuff. You're supposed buff it with wax and a power buffer after compound. Or at least do a hand wax job. If you're not familiar with how to power buff paint, I would suggest letting a paint correction professional do it, you can burn the paint if you don't do it right.

Must be nice that you can even get a direct fit vintage air kit. Nobody makes one for my truck so I'm going to have to measure and hope a sales rep can help me build a kit that will fit my truck.

My current airbox works, I just don't have a condenser, compressor, or evaporator core. But it has everything else.

Anybody know of a good place to get factory parts for what I'm missing?

>>
>>17363413

>>
>>17363437

Prioritize. The Impala is pretty much done. The International is getting to the point where I can focus on body and paint now that the exhaust and suspension is done. The Polara will be interesing, I'll start with getting it running and cleaning it up, then evaluating the damage from two years sitting in the grass. Already sourced rear quarters for it.
>>
>>17363446
Well that's cool that you can manage all that. Does the Polara run and drive? Or will it have to be towed?
What sucks about my projects is they have to out of the shop the next day because we don't have enough extra lifts where it can just sit. And for big stuff, I have to tear it down at my parents house (apartment cuck...for now).

And I know it's not a classic, but I figured some of you might find this interesting. I did a timelapse video of me doing a timing chain recall on a QX56.

Yeah, I'll be running short of room with the addition of this one. I'm going to have to buy another pop up garage to keep it in once I get it running.

I'll be towing it home in the morning, then I'll start frigging with it. Probably check the fluids and then try starting it out of a gas can. It was last run two years ago, which isn't terrible. My Dart sat for 8 years before I got that running, but it was stored inside.

Thanks for the reply bud. The paint is intact but hadn't received the utmost care due to other things happening in life. I took this past week though to detail it; I did a proper wash & rubbing compounded it, and polished all the chrome (which there is A LOT of it). I plan on going back and doing the chrome again as with each pass it's removing a lot of the dullness.

Thanks, I think it used to be somebody's baby. It had rust repair done on the cab corners and most of the parts like the doors and a fender were replaced. They have been resprayed along with the cab and box (noticeable runs in the paint). The guy we got it from must have boughf it from the guy who babied it because it got trashed. Had no motor, trans crossmember was smashed like it had been stump jumping, small scrapes and dings. It was going to be scrapped but I had to save it for my first vehicle.

A little tinkering and she fired right up. Has some frame rot in the rear, thought I won't know if it's really savable until I get it up on a lift. Runs like a top though. Brakes still work, I've jammed them a few times and nothing's gone. No leaks.

I figure if the frame is repairable, I'll be willing to drop a thousand or so to get this beast going. Then do a little body work and either run it or sell it for a couple Grand.

Find solid metal and go from there. Frame rails are available for B body, which is the same as C body in the rear apparently. Going to get it on a lift and have a pro look at it to see what the straight dope is. If that can be fixed, I'm looking at $300 for new leaf springs and it's drivable.

So I just found out yesterday that the AC system in my 81 MkVI had been retrofitted. Got a belt on it, had my co-worker charge the system and The AC works.
Found out the blend door actuator doesn't work so well, so now I need to find another one
>>
>>17378047
Replace the vacuum modulator on the transmission if it hasn't been done yet. The A/C door actuators share vacuum off the transmission and the modulators like to leak and send trans fluid into A/C vacuum system and trash everything.
>>

The Blend door actuator literally moves about 1/4 of an inch so I know for certain that's a problem.

I had to sell the Gran Torino so I could get a new daily driver - as for my dad's 1968 GMC SWB 4x4, I'm probably going to try again next year or two years from now - I'm probably selling my replica of the Dodge Ram from Twister for $10k and then working all the overtime I can at work to try and get the money together for it. They want $30k for it, but it's only a $15k truck on a good day. So I'm going to try and get $20k together, and see what happens. If they still say no, I'll probably get a mostly finished 1970-71 Torino GT fastback, or a truck similar to my dad's, and then see what happens with the truck over the coming years.

This thing was pretty much on the way to the junkyard. Craigslist find. 1984.

In no particular order:
>head gasket, cam seals, timing cover gasket
>timing belt
>water pump
>clutch
>drive shaft bearings
>radiator and hoses
>tires
>sway bar end links
>pads and rotors
>idle control module
>DME ROM returned to stock from sketchy ebay chip
>throttle position switch
>throttle cable
>silicone hose kit because 100% of the hoses were leaking
>intake boot because it was leaking
>AFM mounts
>cold start injector housing gasket
>odometer gears
>fuel pressure regulator
>alternator voltage regulator
>alternator ground cable
>all instrument cluster bulbs
>got the black spraypaint off of the front grilles
>oil and filter, obviously
>stainless brake lines
>spark plugs
>alternator and power steering belts

Lots of work left to do.
>>

so it has the plastic grommet for the throttle valve cable? replace that with a metal one before it snaps off and kills the AOD.

Last night fuel vapor in my gas tank exploded in my 1964 LeMans. I'm just now starting to work on it this morning. My guess is the fuel gauge shorted internally connecting the fuel sender wire to the battery DC. Very fortunately for me the tank was completely drained and only a tank full of vapor exploded. Pushed up the trunk floor a few inches also. I've looked around online and have not found anything like this happening. Found an electrical diagram online and it turns out that the fuel gauge circuit is NOT FUSED.

Here's the wiring diagram for the 1964 Tempest. The power for the fuel gauge is powered by the accessory feed from the key switch but is not fused. Would be smart to add a fuse to the circuit somewhere. In this model the gas gauge power comes from a connector and it would not be difficult to add a fuse but later GM cars went to a printed circuit for the dashboard cluster which would make adding a fuse more difficult or at least different than adding one to a 1964.

There's my source of ignition.. The strip conductor going to the resistance element in the fuel sender. Must have been a straight connection to the battery DC.
I have not been working on the wiring, everything is old and original. Not going to try getting to the gauge today but it seems like one of the magnet coils inside or the shunt resistor shorted. This happened FAST, I had only gone 3-4 blocks on the way home from work. Sounded like a combination of some tree limbs landing on the trunk (the trunk floor being pushed up) and a blowout (the pressure venting out the fuel line connection).

Not very startling at all. I was in a heavy thunderstorm and it sounded like tree limbs landing on the back part of the car and then a sound like a tire blowout. I have someone to help me with this who actually does know his shit and has done lots of body work in the past and he said the rust it has isn't so bad and is fixable. There doesn't seem to be any rust in any of the super important areas like other Datsuns I've looked at where you could put a fist through the floorpans or the roof was rusting around the windshield. He was also looking at the engine and did a compression test and said he's pretty sure the engine has been rebuilt. Turns over and fires up with starter fluid and everything, just need a fuel pump. I think I'm pretty close to getting it to go, then the next job is getting it to stop.

Honestly, I thought this was a pretty good deal, even if I would have rather had a 2 seater than a 2+2. At least it has A/C.

Anyone else running FiTech? Had the 600hp one on my grandfather's truck and its been nothing but trouble so far. First day out, the truck randomly died and after two hours on the side of the road, I figured out to reset it, and drove it back home just fine. Next time we drove it, it died again after driving it a few hours and had to reset it which fixed it. Another time the same thing happened. Then, driving it another day, it shut off after driving it 30 minutes, and even after resetting it, it would barely run enough to put it in gear so it had to be towed home. Now, just today after resetting it in the garage, it ran ok, but now the handheld controller is going crazy. The cursor is jumping around, and cant be used to input or do anything. It jumps in and out of menus on its own and will not let me do anything even after I tried disconnecting the battery and attempting to reset it again.

Truck started off blue but paint was in poor shape, so the owner started to restore it to red and gave up after the cab. Next owner painted it black and swapped the power-glide to a TH350, modded the 350, gave it push-button start, and installed the headers/exhaust.

He got tired of it so I picked it up. Will probably keep it as it is while I take care of essential items and maintenance.

Some of these old Mopars run lights on a circuit, like old christmas tree lights. If one bulb burned out on a circuit it may stop all the lights on the circuit from working.

additionally the circuit board on the instruments may be really badly damaged, if so good fucking luck. They are very fragile and very hard to replace.

it also could be just as simple as the light switch connector stopped working. The Dash lights and headlights are on the same circuit so that could be the problem.

Yes, but mine is particularly difficult to find... from 1977-1981 during the gas crisis, ford was trying to engineer ways to make their trucks get better fuel mileage. Their solution was to install car transitions in a handfull of the light duty trucks and vans. Mine is one of those trucks. So, mine came with a 300 in line six and a 3 speed + overdrive transmission that were ordinarily installed in the ford granada.

>they were absolute shit transmissions, and they are extremely hard to come by these days. Flat plastic bearing inside would implode if you so much as looked at it funny.... almost every truck that came with these transmissions from the factory has since been swapped out with a c4, C6, or granny gear.

However, it gets 18-21 mpg... which I have to say is pretty fucking good for a 40 year old truck

(Also, just to be clear, I get spectacular mpg, at the cost of power... can't tow a damn thing with that transmission.... just a 'highway truck' )
Cruisin' at 60mph at about 1,00 rp in over drive

That you still don't have.

I'm pretty jealous of that. My truck pretty much doesn't cruise well past 60mph

Soon ™

I'll definitely own one before the model 3 comes out.

Meanwhile a valve lash only costs time and a gasket and it can improve your situation dramatically.
>>
>>17389616
You are probably right, but the truck runs and I'm not putting went more money into the 300 unless it's to keep it running.
>>
>>17389619
mate it's a valve cover gasket not a rebuild, it's like $15. It'll pay for itself in fuel savings on your first drive.
This is why everyone knows you'll never get a 302 in there.

I already did the valve cover gasket recently.

Money's not the issue, time is. The thing works, I'm not going to fuck with it, a new engine will be here soon

>I already did the valve cover gasket recently.
then you should have lashed the valves when you did it.

>Money's not the issue, time is.
It takes 20 minutes bro, you have zero excuse.

>a new engine will be here soon
You've been saying that for over half a year. If you can't be bothered to take a socket to couple of rockers then you probably don't have the capability of swapping an engine.
>>
>>17389675
For half a year one been collecting the parts to do a swap which were not great to source.

Neither of us will win this argument I hope you understand that. If you want to skip to the part where you get assblasted and call me a retard and me repeat that I'm not going to do that, now would be the time.

After 12 hours cramped over in intense pain, the carpet is in and the interior of my Bronco is finally finished.

Fucking hell, that shit SUCKED. The first 7 hours were project fun, the last 5 were intense pain and frustration.
