Why the fuck does my cherokee sound like a whale when I turn?
My offroad grand cherokee makes a rubbing, almost whale like noise when I turn the wheel. Is it the power steering fluid? Please for gods sake someone help
Wheel bearing

It's a scraping or rattling sound, as it doesn't happen during acceleration but just when turning

Meant to say it's *not a scraping or rattling sound, like a wheel bearing. But more of a low hum when I turn, like a whale makes

Is it only when moving? Or does it do it when you turn the wheel while stationary?
Sounds like outer axle bearing to me

power steering pump most likely

It's got the wrong fluid in the diffs and transfer case and you're hearing what amounts to clutch chatter. They require a specific fluid that has a type of friction modifier that keeps the clutches happy or they squeal. It doesn't really hurt anything but is annoying.
Oh and the p/s will hum if it has the wrong fluid.

Check the power steering level.
If it's only when turning the steering wheel, and turning the steering wheel makes the noise even when the Cherokee isn't moving, I'd guess power steering fluid or pump.

except obvious things that were already stated (this is, everything about wheel+assist pump), it's possible that your problem is one of those bearings that hold front wheels in place. i had this problem in my shitbox, wheel was turning heavily and making shooting noises from time to time, after i fixed it fuel consumption dropped from 10l/100 to 8l/100

Just check the power steering fluid. I was hearing scrape noises last month while turning and turns out my car just needed some juice in it.

power steering problem, pump could be dead
