Classic Car General: Your own personal taste edition.

There was some debate in the last thread, but it's important to remember that in most places, by law a car is a classic ar 25 years old. Everybody has their own taste, keep it fun, keep it lighthearted.

What's your classic? What are your plans? What are you doing with it currently?

>78 Bronco
>semi-full-ish restoration
>almost finished with mechanical and interior work

Volvo is doing well today, I'm considering swapping in a 4 speed manual to replace the old 3 speed.

By the way are those aftermarket coilover kits worth it? I found a set for like a grand that looked intriguing.

hope I can actually get a first start today. Anyone have experience with Holley street avengers? Shit is dripping from the front float bowl and it doesn't look like fuel. Definitely smells like it though.
Also I dont know much about carbureters, should I just get a rebuild kit?

>>
>>17326298
Probably old varnished fuel? I've never run into that personally but there isn't much else it could be unless your putting some weird shit into your gas tank.
Could be gas with some rust in it from your tank...

Might be a good idea to rebuild or replace. Also maybe take a look at your gas tank.
>>
>>17326348
bad fuel is what I thought as well but I have a filter between the pump and carb and it's clean
Could I safely pull off the front float bowl without losing a bunch of tiny pieces? Might do that when I get home
>>
>>17326348
Also forgot to say I replaced the tank when I bought the car because it was leaking a little.
How long does fuel have to sit to becomes bad? It sat for max 7 months before I got it started again.
>>
>>17326342
Yeah man, I could see a mad max type situation where all that is left are those old hunks of metal.
>>
Are classic cars cop magnets? I'd love to drive one but I'm scared of the cops, especially with incidents like these.

http://dailycaller.com/2015/02/26/highway-patrol-error-results-in-hellish-roadside-experience-for-classic-car-owner-video/
>>
>>17326400
7 months is probably enough tone for that to happen. It's a little early for that but it's totally within the realm of possibility.

I'd say pull the carb apart, do it over an old towel to prevent any mess/lost tiny parts. Depending on the carb it isn't that hard. You will probably want to just rebuild it if you go that route though.
>>
>>17326518
Not really in my experience. Especially if it's American built. Most cops won't give you any trouble like they would with a boiracer.

I found a 1970 Mustang Mach 1 for only $13.9k, is this a good deal?

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/cto/6161631987.html
>>
>>17325211
Get a Hazard Fraught 4" angle grinder, a wire brush for it, some paint, safety squints and vibration absorbing gloves.

Wire brush the fuck out of the rust spots and paint them.

Wear the PPE, and something more than a t-shirt because those wire brushes love to shed wires, and they make a good Michael J. Fox simulator.

>>17326298
Ugh. Fucking floating valve body Holleys.

You're always gonna be tinkering with that thing to get it to work right.

But yeah you that's shit gas in there, and it has either a blown out accelerator pump diaphragm or a blown out gasket. A rebuild kit is a good idea as you'll have to take it apart to clean all the goop out anyways.

>>17326400
NEVER leave a carb with gas in it if you're planning on leaving it sit for more than a month. Also dump fuel stabilizers in the tank.
Old gas tanks are usually open to the air, whether by design or because the fuel cap/neck has a shitty gasket, is bent, etc.
>>
>>17326569
too much for the work needed (re-do exterior & find missing pieces); it'd be worth it if it was less than 10k

A Mach one has an arrow package, which means different mirrors, a lip spoiler and a small wing on the back. That one also has economy wheels, and no indication of a different appearance package.

It's probably a swapped base model.

1965 Ford Falcon Wagon that I bought for 1200 shekels on the 4th of July two years ago
>All the suspension is new, every part of it
>entire fuel system new
>front disk conversion and all new brake lines
>entire cooling system new
>entire electrical system is new
>Installed vintage air AC and a boomer radio with subwoofer
>carpet and bucket seats
I've been building a garage and its nearing completion, up to this point Ive been daily driving the wagon but now Im looking for a small truck to DD.
Im rebuilding the engine and replacing the c4 with a toploader and the ford 8 inch rear with an 8.8 with lsd.

Then eventually I'll paint the thing.
>>
>>17327387
That's real neato, glad for you.

Opinion on vintage AC?
>>
>>17327387
Good to see it's finally up and running. What are you doing for a water pump and whatnot? I'm trying to figure out what to do about accessories, I think I'm going to run a v belt to ps and alternator but do an electric water and fuel pump
>>
>>17327420
It's a station wagon so theres alot of interior room, It would work better in a classic truck or car. I need to get around to tinting the windows to help it cool down. On overcast days It works pretty well but on very sunny days the heat of the sun just pierces through the windows.

I used a cooking thermometer to measure the temperature and it read 46 degrees from the vents.
>>
>>17327463
I have a replacement water pump, belt driven like normal. A mechanical fuel pump too.
Solid radiator fan which robs power but it works for now. And a small electric fan on the AC condenser.
>>
>>17327505
If you wouldn't mind, could I see a picture of your alternator bracket? I'm trying to see what it looks like compared to the 300

>>
>>17327552
I might need a new alternator unless I can find a bracket for this one. Is yours internally regulated?
>>
>>17327595
Ford used the same style alternator for like 50 years, the 3G altnerator is a popular swap for classic fords because it bolts right up. Took mine from a 96 taurus in a junkyard and yeah its internally regulated.

The original alternators on 60s fords were like 65 amp and 3G alternators are 90/110/130 amp so youll need to upgrade the wire that runs from the alternator to starter solenoid.

Another option is to go buy a one wire alternator, which is exactly what it sounds like you put the alternator in and run one wire to either the positive side of the batgery or starter solenoid.

One person pushed the button to roll the window up while another put their hands on each side of the window and glided it up. Since then the window has not got down (because we don't want to have to do that every time). Also, nobody sits next to that door (rear) so hasn't been a need to use that window.

And can you guys make any recommendations for a good 2 barrel Edelbrock carb?

Once again carb adapters aren't worth a damn. Offenhauser makes a triple manifold that takes 3 single barrel carbs. Just get one of those

I'd really prefer to avoid having to buy 3 carbs if I can. Tuning one of them is enough of a pain.

For me, I've bought and sold enough cars and bikes and stuff to have a cure that a deal isn't done until there's either pen on paper or cash on hand. Courtesy is nice. Had an MRI on Friday and found out my L2 disc is herniated into my sciatic nerve. My left leg is numb and mostly useless, in addition to the crippling nerve pain I get when I stand. The good news is, I can sit with no pain, which means I can drive with no pain. The summer isn't totally shot, but it still fucking sucks.

I did it in my Dart. Take your time. Lay the new carpet out on a warm sunny day so it will go back into it's moulded shape and unwrinkle. Get some chalk to mark where you need to cuut holes for seatbelt mounts, seat mounts, high/low switch, shifter, etc. measure 20 times, cut once. Cut small amounts at a time if you're not sure. Get a hair dryer or (if you're careful) a heat gun to take out any additional wrinkles that may be left from packaging.

It's not a huge deal, but you'll want to do it right because you'll be living with the results.

>>17333070

I'll also add, the carpet I installed was nowhere near factory quality. It was much thinner and did not come with a layer of sound deadening. You may want to do some extra shopping and spend a little more to get something a little better quality. Don't let price be the deciding factor.

New question from me: Halo headlights for the Impala, yea or nay?
>>

No. They're rice. Unless you have done 18s on it and a drop, I'd avoid it for now.
>>
>>17333719

That's what everyone says, man. They look so damn cool. The new Challenger is what really turned me onto them.

Pic related is a 67, but still cool as fuck. They make a set that look stock until you turn them on, $139 for the whole setup. I'm so tempted.
>>
And one more set on a Chevelle, because the Tramadol finally kicked in and I'm feeling gooooooood.

Eh. Not my bag. I really enjoy the simplicity and looks of a stock sealed beam. Yours are also in a round housing which is nice on its own. How for it if you feel it.
>>

Is it the actual look of the halo, or the hi-tech look of the bulbs, because this is the actual set I'd be buying if I got them. They look stock until you turn them on.

Other than that, she's in phenomenal shape. 52,000 miles, original I believe. I need to get it back to the paint guy and have in do the final buff/touch up on the paint, but it's going to be good for a long time.
>>
>>17333828
That black you got is really stellar looking. Isn't it a 2 speed 283 or 307 car?

I'm done with the 300 in mine. Other than the paint which is "patina'd" I need to do the door seals, eventually get a new windshield and side window, and redo the headliner. The mechanical issues will take care of themselves over time.
>>
>>17333844

283, 2 speed auto. 283 is really a beast of an engine, and sounds it. PO put some headers on and the sound is just amazing. Doesn't drone at high RPM either. I had her on the interstate the day I pumped all the water out of the gas tank, doing 80, pushing crazy RPMs since it's a two speed. Just a tank of a car.

Haven't been on /o/ got a bit but I got this thing a while back for $500. Old man down the street died and his son sold it to me just to get rid of it. had been sitting for a while, but it ran just fine with the bad gas still in it. 1975 Chevy C10, 4-barrel 350 with Turbo 400. 2wd. It looks good in pictures but it's covered in bondo fills and scratches and that's a cheap paint job. >Salvage title with rusted out floors
>all the bushings need to be replaced, clunking in front suspension
>the vacuum booster screams like a murder victim
>only aftermarket temp gauge works
>leaks oil
>brakes are laughable
>various other crackhead level repairs, like garden faucet controls flow of water to heater core
>tranny needs work on kickdown stuff
>turn signal switch honks horn sometimes

I've never liked Chevys, but this thing is an absolute, neglected, half dead piece of shit that runs just fine and starts every time.
>>
>>17334022
Oh and I'm not really too sure of my plans for it. The rust in the floor really kills my boner, even though it isn't near the cab mounts. Parts are so goddamn cheap and I payed nothing for it so it would be economical to just keep driving, but gas is killing me. Gets like 8 MPG because I've never actually bothered to get it running right.
>>
>>17332336

>>17332432
Thanks, even with the 318 and the little carb she really goes. PO and I think someone dropped in a more aggressive cam when they rebuilt the motor. The Bel Air was cool... But it had rattle can paint, a rusted out trunk, a smoky motor and a leaky transmission. The Fury has paint and the motor rebuild from within the last 10 years. He just really wanted a 4 door, crazy

Seriously, fuck one wires, and fuck having to order shit like an alternator unless you need specialty 200+ amp stuff. Bonus is, you can pick up a CS of any varying amperage you want out of any auto parts store for $80 or so, and if it ever shits the bed you've got a warranty on it and just exchange the damn thing same day.

If you plan to keep it, LMC truck, Brothers, Classic Industries, Rockauto will be your best friend for parts. If you're going to attempt to fix the floors (the pre 78 squares rot like a motherfucker before chevy learned), check out Tabco for the patch panels, floors are easy as shit, rockers suck since you've got to brace the cab before you cut them, and usually if the rockers are gone floor supports are too and cab corners won't be far behind.

It looks like a decent enough truck, tune the fucker up, get the entire master/booster system, if you replace just one they always fucking leak at the rear seal, do fluids and basic shit and it'd be a great truck.

>find yourself some rallye wheels and ditch those shit steels too, can find 5 on 5 wheel sets for practically free

Also, Washington plates? If so, check out Northwest C10's on facebook, great group for help/advice/parts for sale.

Thanks man, your carpet job came out looking good. Thd stuff I bought is aftermarket with a little bit of sound deadening. It's still a little bit thin in case some water gets into the truck so it can dry out easily.

As for your impala, I've never really like the look of halos on classic cars. It wouldn't be horrible, but it's just not my taste.

Also, just a little tip for all classic car owners who have engines running on borrowed time, this shit is magic in a bottle. I was a little reluctant to try it, but the reviews were 95% positive.

When I did the rear main seal on my Bronco, I found scored bearings. It wasn't making any noise and it ran fine, so I slapped it back together in the hopes to squeak out more mileage from it.

The only issue I had with it, was my oil pressure would drop to zero at idle when up to operating temperature. I poured this magic shit in and bam my oil pressure returned, and the more I drive it, the more the oil pressure is becoming stable.

I'd like to take the main bearing back out and check it to compare, but the oil pan is a royal PITA to remove, so that won't be happening until its time for a new engine.

Well after speaking with a guy who builds Windsors this weekend, I liked the look of his engine bay. I'm considering an electric water pump, seems like something that can reduce power loss. Any downsides?
>>
>>17335410
>Any downsides?
Yes electric pumps are shady af and knowing your jew ass it would be out of the question to buy one known to last more then 100k miles.
>>
>>17335410
A stock water pump has minimal loss of power; if you intend to run an A.C. compressor, you'll see more loss there than you would from a water pump. They really don't save weight, either.

Their only advantage is for tuniblility with a high performance setup where they can function in lieu of a thermostat.

You'll be robbed of more power by carrying a spare tire than via a belt-driven water pump.
>>
>>17335410
Honestly man that sounds pretty stupid. Water pump has very little drag on the engine. Also, reliability issues. Do you really want to string the life line of your engine to a questionable aftermarket electric motor? Just leave it stock.

Nothing will be stock, I'm swapping the engine senpai. I've got to figure out all accessories. And I'm going from an engine that came from the factory with a serpentine setup and going to a v belt because that's what my ps pump uses.

>>17335497
That makes a lot of sense. What I do actually need to do is upgrade to an electric fan. I need something that is shrouded and a radiator that doesn't have a bunch of tiny leaks in it. I'll look into mechanical water pumps though.

I didn't even think it was actually a mini until I saw this angle. It looks kinda sweet, I'd slap a chrome bumper on and leave the grille and headlights alone. The whole shape of the front is different, it's like they took it off a similar car and welded it on.

So apparently that's an old Clubman, and they just look like that. It's missing a skinny chrome bumper maybe, but a lot of the google result pictures don't have one at all. It may have had some holes in the front that have been welded out of existence, and the grille probably used to be chrome.

CS130 alts can be had from iirc 100-140 amps stock, easily wired up and there's adapter plugs for older vehicles sold by NAPA and the like, and internally regulated. CS series are also the updated 10 and 12si alts, which were also known for reliability.

I must've done something wrong when changing the exhaust manifold on the Valiant, it's leaking in two places, and the gasket between it and exhaust pipe leaks as well...and it' s a /6, so you can't put more than like, 15ftlb on the bolts or it'll crack...

The iron duke! I have a '90 S10. Slow as fucking molasses, but dependable. Rust galore though, leaf spring shackles, cab corners,, bed sides, etc. Maybe one day she'll get a V8. Where do you live that you need to get an 87 inspected?

In other news, decoded some of my Torino's build sheet. I had already known it was originally a 302, but was interested to find out it was "Light Gold" and, even more of a surprise, had a C4 automatic!? I haven't fucked with the trans at all yet, now I'm afraid of what I'll find...

Bummer. Anything older than 1995 doesn't need inspection in NJ. The left side of my bed has a leak, which in turn has rusted thru the left rear brake line. Mine was a bare bones truck, ordered with no A/C, no power steering, radio delete. How much power do you lose running the A/C?

Enough to make it feel like it'll stall. That's okay tho. The only reason I bought is to haul my bike around. Farthest I'd drive it is a little bit more than 25 miles one way on the weekends.

This pic is before I bought it. Look at the rust lines coming down the seals. Got them off with some t30 compound.

If you were smart you'd just look up on a parts store what year vehicle the 302 comes out of, or even what year truck it was in, and simply get all the shit you need for that year for your pulley system, it isn't rocket science.

>i cant ebay for parts
>i cant look up shit

Should've just 350 swapped it, at least then it won't be on a flatbed.

>Should've just 350 swapped it, at least then it won't be on a flatbed.
Already has been sadly.

And the 302 is coming out of a 2000 explorer which runs a serpentine system, which won't work. That's a great tip about the parts store though. I'm going to see if they can look that up. One of the problems I'm running into is that nothing on this truck was pulled from the same donor. All of the accessories and parts are just whatever the shop had at the time laying around and I've got to hunt to find what is compatible.
>>
>>17338837
May be easier to just convert the whole thing over, why can't you go with a serpentine system? I don't recall if you have power steering, doubting it, so the only things you're running are an alternator, water pump and possibly a fan, if it isn't electric, in which case why not just wire up a 2000's explorer alternator, pickup all the brackets and wire loom you'd need off ebay/junkyard/orielys.
>>
>>17338845
I've got power steering and power brakes, although the booster is way too weak.

That's one of the reasons the one wire alternators was appealing, I could just pop it on regardless of the brackets but I figure I'll just look for a bracket that works with the accessories that I have. The electric water pump seems like it would cause as many headaches as it might start though
>>
>>17338860
Don't bother with an electric pump, the gains aren't worth the risks of failure.

I'm betting you could easily retrofit a booster/master from an explorer, and all you'd need is the pressure line, fittings and rent the tool to crimp your own power steering lines to utilize the shit out of an explorer, sure it's a bit of work but explorer parts are common as frig man.

Shit, people retrofit the 80's booster/master out of GM trucks into 40/50/60/70's pickups for an easy brake upgrade.
>>
>>17338915
What I really need to do is pick down the pump part number, and find where it comes from. I'm 70 percent sure that it comes from an 80s f150 but I need to just dig in and actually dive into the specifics.

As for the brakes, I've got the I beams to convert to disk, but that project I'll probably tackle over winter. Thankfully there's a fuckload of off the shelf parts for anything I need to do, because the same truck frame was utilized relatively unchanged from '65 to '79
>>
>>17338921
That's half the beauty of old trucks, and old cars in general from the big 3, GM's abhorant use of parts-bins pays off when you need little shit that normally would rape your wallet.

I was having some issues with my passenger side valve cover smoking and was curious as to how the pcv systems are set up since mine didn't have one when I bought it. Also the breather on the passenger side does get oil in it so with a PCV system will it start to suck up a bunch of oil?

Before that I wasted years getting cortisone epiderals, doing PT, etc. If it's a mechanical problem there's a mechanical solution, don't beat around the bush and waste time on temporary bandaids.

Put new throttle return springs on the carbs, which threw them all out of whack, so I took it to the shop to get the carbs and ignition set properly. Drove beautifully. For about two hours. Now it's right back to hesitating and stumbling under acceleration, but only when the engine is hot. So I'm flushing the cooling system, maybe it's getting TOO hot and boiling the gas in the carbs. Maybe it's a vacuum leak. I don't fucking know. I'm getting tired of throwing money at a persisting problem. God damn SU carburetors.

What's a good classic car to restore. I'm talking a classic American look

I have a Ford 302 out of my parent's old car that they're getting rid of that I want to put into a restored classic car and give back to them as a gift. My mom really likes Mustangs so that was my original thought, but those are meme taxed as all hell and boomers somehow think a rusted out rolling shell is worth thousands of dollars.

What are some classic cars that would be easy to put this motor into without bleeding me dry? Probably something Ford or Mercury but please give ideas.

Okay Bros, I need help.

I have no experience with braided lines, specifically fuel lines. Literally 0 knowledge.

I need to take a braided line from my mechanical fuel pump to the carb with in line fuel filter and pressure regulator.

It's a sbc 350. I think I'm making too much fuel pressure, I've tried a quadrajet and Holley and both flood. This is a modified engine, making ~350hp. What do I need? The part that confuses me is the size fittings I need. Pics for reference, here is the hard line from pump to carb

The best part of working on cars is that almost anyone can do it, and you can teach yourself as you go. Between youtube, a good haynes manual, and some money for tools/parts, you can do just about everything yourself.

Thanks man. It's been pretty run. I'm amazed, I've driven cars with literally 6x the power, 100 times the value, and nothing is as satisfying or makes me as happy

Gotta start somewhere. You probably won't be happy with the end result, but nobody is with their first restoration. I mean it'll probably look ok but you'll know there were things you could have done better.

Google didn´t help me...

Fair enough, thank you for your input.

Can anyone help me learn how to size these things? Like the fittings for each end? Should they be universal or are there a couple of common sizes? Fuel pump is stock for a 1977 Corvette, and carb is a Holley 4150 I believe
>>
>>17347361
Can't or won't

It should be a normal brake line or fuel line fitting like a 3/8 thread pitch double inverted flare fitting if your going to stainless hose irrc

Holy fuck. I've sent the guy an email asking if it has mechanical issues or rust underneath or what, because the price is too good to be true. That thing is fucking beautiful (aside from the rice bumper). Assuming it actually runs, is there any problems this car would be notorious for?

L28 is pretty dead reliable but at the moment I can't think of anything besides rust issues you might face. You're best going in person to check it out. Gauges could be dead so be cautious in that regard. It almost looks like it has a turbo hood but if I'm honest I'm not too familiar with the S130

I'd either return it to stock or complete the body kit with matching skirts and rear, not sure yet. If I end up getting it I'll post in CCG and we can work something out if you really want it.

>>17347962
Looks clean from the pictures. I'm guessing it either rot somewhere or needs mechanical work. 2500 sounds too good.

Take a pic of the casting numbers on something.
>>
>>17352624
Honestly I'm not sure. I haven't been able to see it in person, just going by the seller's pictures.

It's an old spitfire, so that six cylinder is definitely not stock.
>>
>>17352492
>>17352633
Actually that engine looks very Toyota.

Like late '50s through mid '70s Toyota.

But then again that could just be a generic mid-century Japanese engine look lol.

I thought it was from a GT6 or something at first before the odd ID plate. Thanks.

>>
>>17352666
It could be, if you can get the actual code, not one from an old snowmobile, maybe you could determine if the engine is stock or not. Seems like "spitfire" can be a generic term for other triumph models that look very similar to the spitfire and can include I6s stock.
>>
>>17352700
I mean, it may actually be a GT6, but I haven't figured out if the GT6 came as a convertible.

It definitely has a GT6 MK2 hood on it though. GT6 hood on it, though.

>>
If I get a single "click" and nothing when I hit the ignition, I'm looking at a solenoid issue right? I shorted the starter and it spun up. I ended up getting a shove and popping the clutch to get her fired up for the ride home. It started by key as soon as I got home, but trying a second time got me the solitary click and no start again.
>>
>>17352846
If you hold the ignition on start after the click and the starter spins up slowly it could be low battery, I've had that experience before.
>>
>>17352871
>>17352846
Or a bad connection.

That's happened to me more times than i can count.
>>
>>17352897

Yeah, I'm an idiot for not checking the battery terminals first. Negative terminal was loose as fuck. She's good as new now.
>>
>>17352846
My Bronco would barely crank when I bought it. It had solid rust for solenoid connectors and a brand new starter when I bought it, kek. Check for corroded connectors too.
>>
>>17352721
GT6 did not come as a convertible. The GT6 is basically an upengined hard top Spitfire. The engine is from the Vitesse
