Asked in the last thread but didn't get anything. What should I expect for inspection blitz? Will all the scales and inspection stations be open and working hard 24/7 or should I expect to be randomly pulled over and given a roadside inspection? What are the chances of getting inspected and what can I do to reduce my chance of being inspected? My truck and logs are fine I just have bad anxiety and police can trigger a panic attack. It says this on my medical certificate.

>What should I expect for inspection blitz?
Bears wall to wall.

>Will all the scales and inspection stations be open and working hard 24/7 or should I expect to be randomly pulled over and given a roadside inspection?
Some states run out of inspection stations and convert rest areas into scales with portables ands 1-12 officers. They're just as happy to do random roadside inspections for infractions like cracked windshields, torn mudflaps, non-functioning lights, crossing the fog line, etc

>What are the chances of getting inspected and what can I do to reduce my chance of being inspected?
They're doing an inspection every few seconds nation-wide this week. If they got that number down to one per second they still wouldnt inspect 1,000,000 trucks, so your odds are under 20%. Recent stickers from clean level I inspections will help get you a wave through at a scale, but the best way to avoid an inspection is to stay off the road.

>My truck and logs are fine I just have bad anxiety and police can trigger a panic attack. It says this on my medical certificate.
The CVSA officers throwing on a badge for the week might take sympathy on a special snowflake with a doctor's note, but the highway patrol and DOT aren't going to let that shit slide. Expect a cab search and pat-down on top of your level I.

So what are the most bullshit aspects of the job?

Not sure if I should keep on keeping on in welding/fabrication or if I should stack up some money to go to trucking school. I feel like my personality might be suited to trucking more but I'm not sure at all.
>>
>>17318029
keep on welding, like plumbing its a skill that cant be properly replaced, and if you want to branch out look into diesel mechanic work. youll get all the fun of driving trucks and better pay.

Only in dumbistan where you have 4 ways going when ascending/descending a range. That is the dumbest thing ever.
>>
>>17318164
Welding is already done much better by robots. SAW welding is a classic example.
>>
>>17318207
It's a requirement in many states if you're more than 10 mph slower than the speed limit. Not surprised the steering wheel holder and fendirror user didn't know that.
>>
>>17318320

What was she thinking when she decided to quit her job at Jim Palmer trucking and pursue a YouTube career making shitty videos of herself and her boyfriend traveling the country via some shitty RV? Given the amount of time she has been there and some of the behind-the-scenes promotions she has done for that trucking company, I imagine her pay was half decent and she would have been financially comfortable moving forward. Yeah, I hold the steering wheel. That's how you steer almost every wheeled vehicle. If you didn't attend the wheel, you'd go in a straight line until you hit something.
And another thing, bus rider, rider of buses, the hazards work both ways. 4 wheelers put their hazards on when driving under the limit to make them more noticeable as well. This is something that any trucker would know but apparently I have to spell it out for you since you don't know how to drive.
>>
>>17324056

You're supposed to pick up the pallet jack with the forklift and drop the bitch on the truck so you can move em to the back. If you could get under the shit with the pallet jack and turn it...
>>
>>17325602
If you think lumber is bad, twice they had me take a dozen spindles of steel wire. There is no way to secure spindles in a reefer, so they were sitting upright on rubber mats the whole way with absolutely nothing preventing them falling over, or flying through the front wall and tractor if I hit the brakes hard enough.

No regrets leaving.

Anyone here ever drove a twin stick? at work Ive saw a few old macks DM and R models and well as B models that have a main and auxillary shifter and was wondering how do you shift one? do you double clutch for the auxillary one as well? cam you leave it in either high or low as you drive and change when you want to?
>>
>>17326838
High/low is just range change.
>>

do you have to double clutch for it though?

How can someone not make an embarassment of thenselves if wanting to go to a truck driving school for a class a cdl? backing with a trailer seems hard as fuck from watching videos and id be scared the first time i know. Also is it hard to get the hang of double clutching? For backing up slowly do you guys ever slip your clutch so it wont go as fast (aka holdbthe clutch at the biting point some so it half moves) if bot how do you back up real slowly?

ive only drove a stick car a few times and at first stalled a lot but got better but id worry about taking classes because id probably make an embarassment of myself because backing with a trailer and double clutching sounds hard. would i stand any chance if ive only realy drove automatic cars and still im not a master of backing into places

Do you guys actually use your CB's?

I've had one set up at my house for a month or two hoping to pick up chatter from the near by freeway, but I think my antenna isn't set up right or I'm just too far.

Considering installing it in my daily driver, but not sure if it would be worth the effort.
>>
>>17326919
okay lol

but how do you creep around when moving a truck? do you slip the clutch like where you ease off the clutch just a little until you are barely movibg but dont let off it all the way?

also had you drove manual cars before trucking
>>
>>17326898
first of all if you're signing up to get your CDL they're probably expecting you to be absolutely clueless. reversing isn't bad once you learn the dynamics of a trailer but you'll spend a lot of time practicing it in a driving school. big trucks make lots of torque and will idle themselves around with the clutch all the way out even with no throttle and I don't think I've ever needed to back slower than the truck moves itself at with the clutch out. double clutching isn't hard but not many experienced drivers do it because they shift without touching the clutch at all (it's called floating gears). that brings me to my next point. driving a semi truck with a non-synchronized transmission with anywhere from 7 to 18 gears is absolutely nothing like driving a passenger car with a manual. it does not matter how good you are or aren't at it because they're not the same. it's a little more work but it's not difficult.
>>
>>17326916
I don't. Mine has a protective layer.
>>
>>17326936
are hill starts hard like in a gas burner car thats manual? like as long as you start out in 1st or low even with a load will just letting off the clutch have you going foward?
>>
>>17326926
Creeping is really easy because gears 1 2 3 and 4 will only get you to like 5mph. You can creep at 2mph in 1st and never touch the clutch.

Yeah I have driven manual in a car. It's a different kind of transmission system though. You don't have to feather in a semi.

>>
>>17326965
if you're on a hill with a load, you let the clutch out until you feel it engage enough to hold the truck from rolling back, then you move your right foot from brake to throttle and go. it's easy. but if you're loaded idling with no throttle probably won't actually get you moving forward uphill.
>>
On the CDL test do any of you know if they allow you to pop it in neutral at stop signs or redlights? i not should i downshift to 3rd and hold the clutch in halfway with the brake pressed down? its an 8ll trans

How easy is it to make $50-75k/year in the US with a CDL, if I'm only willing to spend up to 3 weeks away from home at a time? I'm getting real sick of my office job.

I just had to look exactly where it was, saw it's by Palwaukee Airport. There used to be this """Massage""" parlor right there before they got shut down for prostitution.

Did you come from I-94 or what? Because anything east of there is really nice like Glenview and Wilmerte and that's all "North Shore" rich Jews. Wheeling itself is a bit more blue collar families but some of the newer areas in that city are nice.

What's up with the ABF warehouse? It's just empty? Because suprisingly that area (N and NW Suburbs) and their little manufacturing areas were one of the few places that have held up well while everybody else is overseas. There are a lot of big companies based there like Walgreens in Deerfield and then Schaumburg and Hoffman Estates a little west and the industrial areas in Elk Grove, Palatine, and Wheeling keep going. Chicago would have killed them off with taxes, but those suburban cities were smart and realize how much it brings to their city so they did everything to keep them from moving out.

If you've got the right kind of trailer for those plates they're great, but you can probably pick up 10 of them at a tarp shop for $200.

Down here the neighborhoods change quick too, at least around my house. I'm in this neightborhood with $250k-400k houses, then a few blocks east and it's $1mil+ homes, a few blocks west and you're in the hood.

But out west it's a big sprawl of middle to upper class homes if you go by like Weston and Pembroke Pines. Depends on the size of the metro area. Most mid-size cities like Columbus will be like that where 30min outside of the city and it's rural, but once you get inside that suburban and urban radius, it can change quick. The South and West suburbs of Chicago are a little different from the North and Northwest, you can go from kinda hood to upper middle class to blue collar to a nice subdivision fairly quick. That whole NW area, aside from a few shitty apartment complexes, you really do have to travel a bit to find anywhere that you would feel unsafe driving through. But even in that city Wheeling, actually not far from Shure, there are a couple apartments where you wouldn't want to leave your car unlocked overnight. Wannabe Latin Kings and shit.

And the spinners, I bought one as a joke and they were actually kinda entertaining.

No, never anything like driving where you would feel unsafe. But if you look here, these Piper Lane apts are kinda shitty and I think some are gov't subsidized. Knew a girl who lived in there (she had a Misfits tramp stamp and it was really distracting when you tryin to put it in from behind). Not many nigs anywhere, but lots of Mexicans and the second gen ones love to pretend to be gangstas sometimes. If you parked your car there overnight and forgot to lock it, shit would definitely go missing. I lived in Rolling Meadows which was like 15min SW od there and most of the city is middle class aside from 2 apt complexes. You look at the police blotter for the city and literally 90% of the crimes are people with Hispanic names at addresses off Algonquin Road.

Just buy the spinner. They're not bad, something to do in traffic if I'm trying not to smoke another cig.

You just trim them to the size of your model's window, then slip it on top of the glass and roll it up. Looks like pretty much every picture of them. They're good for hot nights with a slight breeze where rolling the windows down is enough, but it keeps bugs and birds out.

Real talk follows:

The trifecta of sprays; Mothers for the dash, Windex for glass and Spray Nine for cleaning up grime. Never direct spray dash shine onto your dash since it'll just jack your windows up with the inevitable overspray.

Best thing you can do to keep your floors and pedals clean is to A, get a blowgun kit and cut it into your driver seat supply, and B, go to Wal-Mart and buy a cheap pair of easy to slip on shoes, and use those exclusively in the truck for driving.

My outdoor shoes get taken off on the step, and go right into a simple wash basin I use as a boot bin, and I have a pair of slip on Airwalks for the summer and driving slippers for the winter.

>>
>>17329685
Fiction because a load is a load no matter where it's going. Still, the idea seems to have caught on with owner-ops and fleet managers that a backhaul/backload is cheap freight that you take a loss on in order to get you back towards your base or better freight lanes where you start making money again. Problem is this shits on freight rates everywhere and is poor business practices anyway but has become the norm as all the big players vie to see who can go bankrupt first and take a bunch of little guys with them.

The concept of a backhaul is much older than a megacarrier. Back before deregulation truck companies were normally smaller than 5 trucks, and had one or two customers they had contracts with in their home town, and they'd deliver that load then deadhead back to the shipper for their next load. Some contracts explicitly outlined exclusive use of equipment on a round trip, but it was the norm to turn and burn regardless because the odds of finding a return load from 800 miles away were abysmal up until the fax machine became mainstream. Backhauls were advertised as gravy on top of what you were already making, so after deregulation they paid accordingly on freight with no deadlines. Even if a load only paid $0.50/mi that'd be enough to cover fuel, maintenance, and a steak dinner every night on top of the rate you'd already earned on your outbound load that paid for that going both ways. It's a bit of an antiquated concept in a world of OTR spot market load boards, but there are still tens of thousands of trucks running on the old dedicated customer model glad to take $0.75/mi home that still gets them back to base before their next load on Thursday.

Wind Turbine loads in BC were pretty impressive as well. Shoulda taken a pic but here you go.
>>
>>17331302
It's about 1400mi to my old zone from where I'm at now and I always do that trip straight through. By myself, it's normally 22-24hrs depending on traffic and how much I stop.

A couple keys I learned-
-plan out the trip so you don't hit major cities in rush hour
-if you do need to go thru a city at a time with traffic, try and route it so the rush hour is at the beginning of the trip and when you're 16hrs in you won't be in Atlanta at 5pm on a Friday
-Newports and 5hr Energy Shots
-Schedule so the end of your trip is in the morning or at least earlier in the day

I normally leave around 10am. That way, leaving from Chicago or South Florida it's after AM rush hour. Atlanta is about halfway, so I end up going thru there later in the evening and traffic is smooth. Sometimes going North, I catch the tail end of AM rush hour in Chicago but not too bad. And that same timing coming south, I hit Nashville afternoon traffic but it's still fairly early in the trip and nowhere near as bad as CHI-ATL-MIA traffic. And then I normally start to get worn out like 16-18hrs in, but with that timing it helps give me a second wind because the sun is coming up and I can stop for a quick breakfast.

When I moved down here, I had a 26' Penske International with a car hauler on back. It would do about 35mph through the Smoky Mtns and then had DPF problems the whole way. It was like 32hrs straight in that truck and I still did it.
>>
>>17332614
My truck is on the right. Already rubbed my dick all over the load.

>>17332665
He should just cover himself in feces and sleep with the cargo.
>>
I started driving last fall, so this summer is my first as OTR. It's starting to get hour enough in the south that I want to idle with the ac on, but I've just learned that apparently I'm a gigantic sissy baby girl who can't sleep with the truck idling. It's not the noise, I can do noise, as almost all my loads are refrigerated, but it's the vibrations that are keeping my awake. I even tried bumping the idle revs up to around 780-800 to idle smoother but it's still no good.
So my idea is maybe I'll get a foam mattress topper, a 3" in one on Amazon has good reviews and some are even from truckers, and my thinking is this will cancel out the vibrations that just resonate through the shitty innerspring mattress.
Anyone had a similar problem or have any helpful insight? Starting to slowly lose my mind from averaging 3 hours of sleep a day.
>>

Melatonin. You'll get used to it. I had a freightliner with opti idle that would turn the truck on anytime the AC needed to kick on. I'd jump out of bed 3 or 4 times a night thinking I just drove off a cliff or someone backed into me. Eventually learned to sleep thru it.

Does this mean I should just wait until I'm 21 before I do CDL training? Can't find much about this online.

The next one being built right now is on a Kenworth T800 chassis, so maybe I will switch to that one once it's ready.

This Western Star setup is more versatile than the other units however, since it has a higher pressure pump setup and can haul more fluid when they have 75% axle weight restrictions on in the spring and fall due to it's weight distribution.
>>
>>17334733
Like I said, they never bothered me, so I wouldn't know, but it seems logical. Get the springs out from between you and the vibrator and you're eliminating a direct kinetic link. I'm sure you can find a study on vibration transfer through coil spring vs foam mattresses to back it up.
