Planning on swapping my 3.9 V6 with a V8 in my Dakota and texted the guy selling pic related and will be meeting Monday to buy it. Should I go through with it or back off? I feel nervous but I've never done a swap before either. Anything I should check for? I'll check if the engine spins freely, but not sure what else. I'm bringing a friend as well.

buying new engine for dakota, should I or should I not

Check the compression of all cyls...Shouldn't be much more than 10pp difference between them...
Look at the block, see if theres alot of oil deposits/runs/drips...if there are, can you trace back to where they start...as in, valve cover gasket leak...list the issues down on paper, obvious in that if its a huge issue then you walk...
Do not be afraid to walk away...idk if you drove 600km, if it feels bad, looks bad, you get some bad vibes then just walk the fuck away...
It would be easier to buy a V8 Dakota

Since my truck is a 2000 but the engine is a 1997, what should I do about the pcm? Dodge stopped putting 5.2's in dakotas after 1999 but continued them in rams, would a ram pcm work or no?

you'd want to go to a forum to get a straight answer, but my guess is that you'll have to do some kind of splice job

How about not wasting your money and buy a better truck from the start?

Because the cheapest v8 Dakota I've found is only $8000 which I don't have

>ever wanting a dakota
My 99 Dakota sport is the only vehicle I regret buying. What a shitheap

Really? What didnt you like about it? Other than my severely underpowered 3.9, I love the shit out of mine. It's tough, it feels little, and it, in my opinion, looks great.

What planet do you live on that you cant get a v8 dakota for under $2000

Generation 2 Dakotas had a fucking garbage transmission.
I own a 1991 Gen 1 with a 360 swap. One of the best vehicles I have owned besides a Jeep XJ.

You will need a 1999 5.2 PCM and a wiring harness for it.
