Questions That Don't Deserve There Own Thread

>ctrl + f "/qtddtot/
>no results

Post your questions here and hopefully someone can help. I'll start

My right rear door isn't shutting all the way; it's as if something is getting caught. I noticed it when I went to go wash my car and there were water dots on the INSIDE of the window. The weather strips are intact and attached; I've also looked at the door itself and the mechanisms on it, but can't seem to find out what part is stuck, why it is, and how to fix it.

Yes, an evo 6 will have a rear differential

I wouldn't because if you can afford an Evo you should be able to afford a good torsen or other locking diff

fuck off nigger I just want to drive quickly and turn well, I don't have a fucking clue yet, Im just brainstorming ideas to make it oversteer, and locking the rotation of the rear wheels seems like a great way to do that vOv

I got 2 violations a few months ago. I have to pay a fine and take a BS safety class and then they wont go on my record. I have to have all this done by a set date in the future, but i noticed yesterday at the back of the packet of legal BS they gave me it says i had another court date last week. Doesnt say what it was for, im guessing its just a basic check in or something. Problem is i missed it, obviously. Is there any chance they could try to fuck me for that? I've got a car that's been exposed to the texas sun for about 30 years or so, so the leather/pleather's discolored.
Any ideas as to how to repair that?
It's not dirt, so a magic eraser and cleaner isn't gonna do squat. Trust me. I've tried.

I also don't know what to look for in terms of products if there's anything that can fix it.

Most common spot to run oil to coolers/remote filters is from the oil filter pad. There's no doubt and adaptor out there that fits the 4.0. May even be a whole kit available still.

FWIW, oil coolers really only make a difference when engine speed is over 3000 rpm for sustained periods ime, so I don't know that it would do what you want. Why do you think idle oil pressure is low?

>Paper says ill get a bench warrant if i dont show, but is that all theyll do?
Well if you get stopped in that county for any reason you're going to the pokey until you can see a judge. Some places you might be there all weekend. Other jurisdictions may choose to pick up on the warrant but probably won't due to the expenses involved in prisoner transfer etc. though Texas DPS has been known to ship people across multiple counties for bench warrants.

But other than that, just issuing the warrant is it.

>time for the vehicle inspection of my W124 came up
>the only thing in my car that didn't work as it should was the parking brake
>after doing some research I found out how to adjust it
>do that in order to try to save some money instead of taking your car to garage
>found out my parking brake actually was now able to keep the car in place in slight downhills
>I HAVE FINALLY MENDED SOMETHING MYSELF I'M THE BEST MECHANIC EVER!!1!
>take the car to inspection as it was guaranteed to pass now
>well it didn't pass because the parking brake apparently only worked on the passenger side of my car

Given that I'm a dumbass it's possible that I turned the adjustment thingy the wrong way on the driver's side, is there a way to only test parking brake on one side on your car on your own if I try adjusting my parking brake myself again?

The a/c in my car has been hasn't been blowing too cold. It will dip to warm and go back to cool. When I used one of those gauges it said it was filled. Tried to puff a little extra freon in to see what would happen and it jumped to red for a second. Is this bad signs of an issue? Or just because I tried to put some in when it didn't need it? And what could be wrong with my a/c seeing as it's not blowing cold.

The battery in my car is dying, so not sure if that's any issue. I think my a/c belt is slipping, or not turning properly? So thinking that's the issue.

If the belt is old, replace it, but unless its consistently squeaking, its probably not the issue. Not sure what kind of setup you have, but if your evaporator core is corroded from too much ice buildup and melting. expansion valve could be old and dead, dryer could be clogged, etc. If you dont care about the ozone layer, start taking the system apart and figure out whats clogged or not opening/closing.

not him, but my Oil pressure in my 02 wrx seems kinda low too on hot days. On your average 60-75F day it sits around 15-20 psi. on 80+ its between 12 and 10 psi. I've confirmed that water temperature does have an effect on oil temperature from some experiments and part replacing last summer. on near 100 degree days it'll be dipping below 10psi. However in the snow, idle is like 90+ psi. How do I bring my oil pressure under control? How high is too high? How low is too low? I have an oil pressure gauge and before that I never saw the dummy light come on so....? /shrug everything is fine?

Hey, thanks for the reply. I tend to get OEM parts for anything I need to replace, so I was banking on getting stuff from Ford. Funny thing though - I called a Ford dealer and spoke with a guy in parts, apparently they don't make & stock those bolts anymore. They recommended I try to get bolts off a junkyard car. Not sure if that's factually true, or the guy I was talking with doesn't know what he was talking about.

So I have a W124 Mercedes Benz with M103 engine and a mk2 MR2 with 3S-GE engine.

How does one get some extra power out of NA engines? Seriously is there any practical and/or cost effective way or should I look into engine swaps or turbocharging?

>>
>>17316895
Yes, because you'd be moving the piston up with a longer rod and down the bore with a shorter.

>>17317903
There's no easy way to get more power out of either since they're both more optimized for what they are than the old malaise era American engines that were so detuned that a few simple mods could get noticeably more power. You'd be looking at forced induction or engine swaps imo. Neither engine is really built for boost and even then you'd have to come up with control system mods to compensate for the extra fuel needed and differing timing curves etc. Neither car is that good a candidate for an engine swap either so I'm thinking just leave them alone and enjoy them as they are.

Okay i realize i'm gonna sound like a retard, but hopefully some of you can help me fix that.

Let's say i have a 1000cc engine. That means that the pistons displace 1 liter of air per engine cycle, assuming 100% volumetric efficency, right?
if 15:1 is (roughly) a reasonable air/fuel ratio, that would mean that the carb/injectors would be adding 1/15 of a litre of gas per cycle, which means the engine would burn a litre of fuel every 15 cycles, ehich can't be right

So, what am i getting wrong?
>>
>>17318302
no matter i already found it elsewhere...

i should have considered air weight rather than volume

I can't connect my phone to my radio via Bluetooth.

Car is a Ford Focus 2011 and I think it was originally in Sweden, since the language is Swedish on all software.

When trying to connect to Bluetooth, a voice says there are too many phones saved, and tells me to delete an existing phone via the radio. However, there is no option to do so. I've looked everywhere. It seems I have to enter the phone book or something like that to delete it, but there is no way to get into said phone book. The videos I've looked at seems to have slightly different software, or at least more options than I do.

The fuck do I do? The music on my radio is utter crap and there is no Aux here.

How much would a timing belt replacement cost me?

I hit 202k on my avalon and the services records said the last one was changed at 102k. Am I looking at $500+?
>>
>>17318925
>$500?

Looks like that's a bit on the low side. I'm thinking I'd budget $800 based on what I've read. You could probably keep it as low as $500 if you only did the timing belt alone but that's seriously not recommended due to the age of the car. It's much better to replace every goddam thing in there so you only have to do it once.

Converting my '92 4Runner from R12 to R134a. Original specs say to use 30oz R12 and 7oz mineral oil. Is it the same for R134a? ie: just put in 30oz R134a and 7oz mineral oil?
>>
>>17319850
No.

You'll only use about 70% the amount of 134 as R12. Also you must use PAG oil since mineral oil turns to virtual glue in the presence of 134. Try to blow as much mineral oil out as possible but don't bother getting all autistic about it either.
>>
>>17319871
Same amount of oil though? So 7oz PAG 46 oil and about 21-ish oz's of R134a?

>>
>>17319878

You should've put the oil in it already since you use to vacuum to remove air and moisture and you won't be opening the system again or it'll just get back in there.

Anyway, yeah you just use the same amount of oil.
>>
>>17319903
Shit I didn't think about that. Frankly I was just trying to see if it would hold a vacuum in the first place... I wasn't sure if the A/C even works for sure.

So, still being a bit of a noob in terms of A/C shit, how do I get the oil into the system? Just pour it down the low pressure line and then turn the vacuum pump on? Won't that just suck out all the oil again?
>>
>>17319901
Thanks, it's slow but surprisingly comfy.
>>
>>17319913
>Frankly I was just trying to see if it would hold a vacuum in the first place...
That's one use for it. Pull it down and wait thirty minutes or so to see if there's a leak.

As for adding oil you're supposed to drain each component remove and replace the same amount of oil you got out of each. Since you're not removing parts What I'd do is put about half in the high pressure gas line between the compressor and condenser and the other half in the accumulator if it has one, or the low pressure line. The idea is to try to not slug the compressor with a shit ton of oil at once which can bend and break shit inside.
>>
>>17319960
Yeah the accumulator is behind the grill and a pain to get to. I'll try to get the oil down each line, like you said. I wouldn't be surprised if the compressor flat out doesn't work, if that's the case I'll be replacing the compressor, accumulator and orifice tube anyways.

Thanks for the help dude, it's very much appreciated.

Just a differently (lower) geared rear end that means you'll be spinning higher RPMs verses a higher geared rear end, and thus getting marginally worse fuel economy. It's hard to go wrong with most economy cars as long as they're in good shape and have been maintained well, and as long as you continue to maintain them. I really advise you to profile your sellers. Grandma cars are the best cars to buy for instance. If you give me your local craigslist I'll do a quick look for you

Misc. Details:

>I never get above 3rd gear, she never leaves the farm.

>Rust is apparent. No frame damage but new brake lines after the old ones rotted out and I backed into a wall.
>Exhaust stops after the mid pipe. No axel back or muffler because I backed into the wall

-I did an oil change yesterday and noticed trans fluid residue around the back half of the trans. I want to check the fluid level, but the owners manual doesn't say anything about the type of fluid just the volume for the manual version. Is ATF okay in this older model tranny or is it a gear oil?

-When I first start it in the morning the revs go up to 2k for a second and then it quits on me. Turn it over a second time and she gets up to 2k and settles in at 1k idle.

-Unless she warms up for 5-10min, or it's above ~70°f outside, and you put it in 1st/reverse she'll take off to 15mph unless you ride the clutch.

Are my last 2 issues related to age of the vehicle or can they be solved? Im not looking to put a whole lot into her and taking it to the mechanic is out of the question. She's a good truck and I'm game for anything short of rebuilding the engine/trans.
Thanks guys.

Center diff = same thing for forward and rear driveshafts that a front or rear diff does for the left or right axle respectively.

new anon here to tell you why it's a bad idea. welding shit puts unnecessary strain on the entire driveline, shit is supposed to slip and turn. Not to mention the high clutch drops that you'll have to do to get the wheels to spin, now you have 4 wheels trying to spin. A 4wd deja car isn't as simple as welding the diffs. If the engine isn't powerful enough, you'll stall and never driftu anywhere. If you build your engine and skimp out, the engine breaks, no driftu. If something in the trans breaks, no driftu. There's a very good reason why most/all running in the 90's cars are rwd. The power is split between 2 wheels instead of 4, easier on the drive train, easier to flood the wheels with power and get them to spin. I know this is a flawed example, but say if you need 250hp (again, totally made up) to spin your wheels, you'll need 500 for a 2wd car and 1000hp for a 4wd car. It's just not in the nature of an AWD car to drift. You can slide around, but you'll never get that nice long drift that you see rwd cars do. Hopefully this ends the whole discussion.

how do you ease around tight places in a manual car or a semi truck? ive drove a manual car on the road and if you press the brake without the clutch for long it shuts off but in auto matics you can just ease around easily. do you just stop and go a lot when moving manuals while using the clutch how you regularly would for starting and stopping?

sorry uf its a dumb question ive been curious though

also ive noticed on diesel pickups no throttle is needed to go just ease off the clutch
>>
>>17326084
You let the clutch out long enough to get momentum and then push it back in and ride in neutral until you run out of momentum then repeat.

Diesels have a shitload of torque so the engines typically give no fucks.

What's the key to financing an expensive car /o/? I've heard buying in full is the best way to go ofc but I'd rather have the car sooner rather than later. I also know that to apply for a loan whatever bank you apply to looks at your earnings and average disposable income after your base expenses (food, rent, mortgage etc.) Is there a certain percentage of money you can put down to get better chances of an approved loan/ interest rate? Credit score goes down when you get declined for a loan.

>>
>>17327352
>I've heard buying in full is the best way to go
Yea if you wanna drain your bank account

your best way to finance is to get as low of a rate as possible and get the monthly payment low enough that you can afford to make double payments. This saves you time, interest and money
>>
>>17327485
I see, will keep that in mind.

Are there clauses included that say I can pay off what remains of the loan in full if I have the money?
>>
>>17327541
Most of the time no. But like the previous anon financing can be the better option so long as the loan term, rate and, payments are manageable for you, you'll improve your credit, you may get a cheaper price than paying in full as the dealership gets a kick back off bringing in business for the loan company.

However, if you get behind it'll be a nightmare. So If you have the money to pay it off, get the loan be sure there are no early payoff penalties, run it out for about 6mos to a year to improve your credit then pay it off. Also factor in insurance as you'll have to have full coverage during the term of the loan, there almost no exceptions to that.
>>
>>17327352
Each bank has its own system with the rates. Money done is usually just a deposit to show you're responsible, or because the car has a higher value than the bank sees.

>>17327541
Not these days usually. Yet ask anyways if there's any fees for paying it off earlier or not.

Is a toe control arm the same as a toe arm?

My car needs ones because the right rear side is bent. I can't find a "toe arm" part at all but I can find plenty of toe control arms. And, sort of related, what sort of prices should I be looking at for a set? Just parts, no labor or anything

I don't need anything fancy or crazy for performance, just something I can put there and know they'll be solid and safe. I'd do OEM but Toyota doesn't make the part under any VIN at all.

The car is an 88 MR2 with a 3SGTE engine swap and an SW20 transmission from a JDM 97 Turbo

Is my battery leaking? Left the car at the airport for 5 days, came back and it died on me at a light. Its possible this has been there for a bit and i didnt notice, only had the car around 2 months. Wouldnt it of died on me before if it was this bad though? I had no power at all. My dash lights struggled to come on a few seconds after i turned the key, then when i tried to start it i lost all power again. Would "excessive" use of the battery worsen this? Excessive meaning a full system, subs, amps, having the ac on max, radio on, etc. All at once. I dont have a system or any extra shit like that, just wondering as ive never dealt with corrosion this bad before
>>
>>17329075
Didnt realize the pic was at a bad angle. Corrosion was surrounding the terminal at least an inch from the base up. Decent bit all over the positive cable too. It came off pretty easy, probably could of blown it off.
>>
>>17329075
If your charging system goes rage mode for a long time, your alternator voltage regulator and rectifiers could overheat and release the ghost. If the car is older, your alternator brushes might also need to be replaced. Also make sure your battery light actually works. Some cars require there to be a working lightbulb in the dash cluster or the entire charging system doesn't work.

Car batteries are rated for like 600 amps. The only thing that can really kill them is if you overdischarge them or just age. I've had it happen where the alternator brushes were starting to go, and only charged the battery partially. This meant that every time I ran the car, the battery would discharge a little bit more until eventually it wouldn't crank over anymore.

If it's an older car, pull the alternator, go to VatoZone and get them to load test it. Check the brushes and replace them if needed (they're like 15 bucks). You probably need a new battery too.

>>
>>17329235
You should be alright, but shit happens. You might blow a head gasket in October without warning.

Earlier BMW engines are massively high mileage engines if you do the preventative maintenance. I have an E30 that I work on in the driveway of my apartment. You can take that whole car apart with a metric socket set, 3 or 4 wrenches, and a jack.

Just don't hoon the shit out of it and it'll pretty much last forever.

First orders: all the belts (every single fucking one), all the fluids, water pump, tires if it needs it. Do your valve clearances. Tighten your throttle cables. Brake pads and rotors.

If you're feeling ballsy, rebuild the suspension. ECS Tuning sells refresh kits for this. You can do the whole thing for like $1000 in parts.

As a caveat, I really don't have any first hand knowledge beyond working on an E30 with an M20 in it. The V8 might be a totally different animal with its own set of problems that I'm not well researched in. But also, probably 75% of the time, I walk right by my late model Jetta to drive my 325 to work. I'd say go for it.

Why is electric air conditioning so difficult and why are there no simple kits for cars?

I'm working on an engine swap now and am having a bitch of a time trying to figure out how to keep my AC. I've found electric AC units designed to be cut into the top of RVs but nothing I can just bolt into my car with a line to a heat exchanger.

Ideally, I'd like to have a system where the AC unit is mounted in the truck, some flexible HVAC ducts shoot the cool air forward in the cabin while an exchanger sits behind a vent in the bumper.

because electric compressors are fuckhueg
>using a belt to turn a compressor instead of a big heavy electric motor
they're not wrong, you know
just fab up some mounts you'll be fine

also condensers work best with air flow
which there is little to none of in your trunk
this would require an extra fan besides the blower and an intake/exhaust system
>>
>>17331052

I know they need airflow. All I would need is either a fan to draw air over the heat exchanger or just hang that part outside of the cabin. Lots of contained home AC units have intake and exhaust fans to do just that.

I can't imagine that the compressor or motor would need to be that huge either. The existing one is already small enough. All I need to cool is the little cabin area in my subcompact car.
>>
>>17331116
EDIT, just to add to this.

I have a contained AC unit for my house. It sits on my floor with two hoses that go into a frame in my window. I just don't understand why someone hasn't made something much smaller for people building track cars. I could mount that box in the back by the fuel cell easily.

My car is a manual, and recently when i put it in reverse it shakes a lot more than it did. Im not talking about that slight bit when the clutch catches, it feels like the car is trying to violently shake the trans off onto the road. I think it only happens when it catches, if i were to reverse and coast after it catches i dont think it would shake anymore. Problem is i hardly ever need that gear, and when i do im only in it for maybe 5 seconds tops, so the entire time im in R it shakes like crazy.
