Why do I never hear anyone on /o/ talk about Suburbans or Tahoes? I'm a European and have never seen one of these in real life, but they seem cool as hell and I'd definitely want to own one if I were an American.

Hey OP I daily drive one here in the USA even though I am a college student. I'm looking to sell it for an F-150 because it's way more car than I need.

I pay $70 USD every fill-up. To drive it is like driving a shipping barge. The V8 is a willing accomplice to drive like a total dickhead and the seats are very comfortable. It has three rows and it can seat up to 9 people and it has the same room in the back as a Tahoe if you removed its third row.

The Eurofaggots in this thread seem to miss the forest for the trees whenever American cars are posted and I really feel sorry for them. If only they had a better perspective they'd appreciate what these cars are.

jej

I drove my uncle's F-150 of the same generation and liked it a lot. There's something about the way that they drive that feels well-engineered. This is the truck I'm looking at, though I'm not a fan of the wheels. I would black out the little chrome bits in them.

>American roads being so garbage that you need an offroad vehicle

No, our roads are pretty amazing even with the 50+ year old infrastructure and many people who own these kinds of vehicles live on massive properties that have dirt roads near them.

Our roads are so good that even mall-crawlers with massive lifts are comfortable because there are no bumps to make them irritating to drive. It's our PRIVILEGE, something you must not have a grasp on
>>

A Suburban has 8 feet of cargo space behind the front seats. A single cab long bed truck has 8 feet of cargo space behind the front seats. You can compare the wheelbases and length on Wikipedia if you want to.

>>17310365
I've got an F150 of that generation and a Suburban of the previous generation. There is nothing well engineered about the F150 and it is the worst vehicle I've ever had the displeasure of driving. It's had countless issues and thousands have been poured into it for repairs that never seem to completely fix the issues. It's horribly uncomfortable and drinks more gas than GM's big block trucks by a large margin. Maybe your uncle's is a fluke but I've had to deal with several of these and all have been equally terrible.

The Suburban on the other hand is easier to repair and has only a few hundred into repairs with around the same miles even though it's nearly ten years older. It's far more comfortable, has been far more reliable, and was much cheaper.

The ONLY F150 configuration that's smaller than a Suburban in any dimension is the RCSB which has pointless half doors and seats that don't recline. The only advantage I can give to the F150 is that the steering is firmer.
>>
>>17310384
Holy shit math is a bitch.

2003 Suburban - 219 inches
2005 F-150 Ext cab with 5.5ft bed - 218 in
Ext cab with 6.5ft bed - 228 in

I hope it's the Suburban length that's wrong because I believe I'm getting BTFO.

My dad has a blue '99 Suburban 1500 w/ a Vortec L31 and looks like pic related including the wheels. It's the 2nd car I ever drove (in 2004) and I've driven it a lot.

It's good for hauling shit, it sounds okay ,and is comfy -- but it's slow, the brakes suck, and it gets 8-11 mpg. It is surprisingly fun though.
>>
>>17310420
Thanks for your experience with this. I particularly like the way they look and I assumed the quality would be similar to the Crown Vic I owned for a few years. This is the listing I'm looking at

https://bham.craigslist.org/cto/6147105982.html

I know the mileage is high but I'm just looking for something I can feel good about driving while I go to college in Mississippi as an out-of-stater. My Suburban has been very kind to me and is still chugging along with a transmission on its way out, intake gasket vacuum leak, near-balding rear tires and numerous dents. Forgive me for any bad judgement in seeing the listing I provided as being a good example because I am a young college age man and I have zero experience with the real issues that these trucks might have
>>
>>17310400
>gas cost
I have one of those F150s. 2WD ECLB gets 9-10 combined. Somehow managed 13 highway for a few days after the intake was replaced, then back to normal.

Suburban of the previous generation (3/4 ton 4x4 5.7l) gets 16-17 combined.
>>
>>17310450
yeah I was just saying that was probably his assumption. Im the one that posted above with the silverado. I get about the same mpg for mine and its a lifted z71
>>
>>17310435
The MPG I get in my GMT800 with the 5.3L Vortec is much better at around 16, 18 if you baby it. The brakes do suck and you really have to muscle them if you're used to a normal car.
>>
>>17310442
He's asking like 3k too much on that 2wd truck. I'd avoid that gen f150 due to servicing issues.
Agree with >>17310420, GMT800s are so easy to work on. Parts are super easy to find cheap also.
>>
>>17310422
Looks and reputation can be deceiving. Suburbans aren't nearly as big as most people think. If you're going from a hatchback to a Suburban they're huge but if they're small compared to most trucks.

>>17310435
>>17310468
If it's slow and you're doing that bad on gas something's wrong with it. 255 HP shouldn't be fast but it's more than enough to get it moving.
The hydroboost brakes in the 2500s will throw you through the windshield.
>>
>>17310494
There's exactly the size of trucks unless you get a crew cab long bed.
>>
>>17310501
Same dimensions as a regular cab long bed. Shorter than any comparable extended cab or crew cab pickups, which are the most common.

The intake gasket vacuum leak on mine is bad enough to affect braking at a standstill (if you let off the pedal just enough it'll lurch forward as it loses vacuum every couple of seconds).

Those 2008-up F250s are fucking gigantic.

I also like the police Chargers that are used by FHP here in Florida and there's a bunch of them around the country for less than $10k with decent mileage. They're obviously abused and are at the point where the economic benefit to the department of keeping them is exhausted but I am looking for something I can thrash on and repair cheaply.
>>
They are pretty bad ass. The new suburban looks beautiful in black right from the show room, it's like a huge piano on wheels.
>>
In Europe they're impossible to drive because of taxes, insurance, gas and it wouldn't fit in most villages. An average pickup truck would cost almost € 1000 monthly total
>>
>>17310520
They're not abused all that bad. It's not like there's high speed pursuits every day. Most get the same treatment the average daily driver does but are maintained better. I wouldn't worry about abuse buying one straight from the source. That said, they're fairly late model, have a lot of electronics, and Dodge isn't known for having the longest lasting or cheapest replacement parts. If you're looking for something to beat on and fix on the cheap, I'd stick to the Suburban. You'd be hard pressed to find a vehicle at triple the cost of a Suburban that will hold to abuse for longer and/or be cheaper to repair.

My Suburban has 164k miles on it and my economic circumstances are fucked. Should I just repair it and keep it until the 230k mark at the end of college?

It needs
>new transmission
>intake gasket repair
>two rear tires

If I were to keep it I'd do
>dent repair down the sides (4 dents, PDR recommended)
>bumper creases

It's a little weird because this is the car I was carted off to school in when I was very young and now I'm stuck with it.

>transmission is more difficult but doable
>get used rear tires. If they are mexicans near where you live they have llanteras and sell them for like $20 each
>>
>>17310596
Buy a new transmission, replace the intake gasket yourself, and throw some cheap used tires on the back. Having paperwork on a new trans when you go to sell it will really help you get the most money out of it. As is you'd be lucky to get $2000 for it.
>>
>>17310039
I don't want one, but if I needed a truck/SUV I'd get a GMT800 tahoe or suburban. Super reliable, simple to diy fix, extremely wide parts availability and large aftermarket, and fairly comfy.

I don't need a truck or SUV though, so right now the only thing I want out of one is the engine to drop into my turd gen.

Do you want me to release a peer reviewed article where I log economy data for both vehicles? I didn't base my numbers on assumptions or instant economy readings from a computer. That's topping it off, resetting trip meter at the gas station, confirming calibration using mile markers on the highway, driving to near empty, then filling up making note of distance traveled and the amount of fuel used. Both vehicles made the same trip multiple times and were being used in the same manner in the same places.

Just imagine an SUV, then scale it up. That's literally it. Though having 3 rows of seats and all that space is nice on wide roads like in the more real parts of Texas. Just be weary of the gas milage and they do burn oil later on in life on the older ones.

I'm not a burger and I drive a midsize SUV, come at me bro.
>>
>>17310435

Why is the mileage on these things so much worse than a 1/2 ton pickup? Isn't that basically what they are?
>>
No one drives suburbans these days except rich wives because they are prohibitively expensive, especially when compared to a pickup truck with a topper over the bed, which is the alternative for people who actually need the ruggedness and power. The Suburban is the ultimate mall-crawler. It has been that way for almost 2 decades now. The pickup truck smaller SUVs have taken its place. New ones are for rich wives who need a huge bloated vehicle to compensate for their poor driving skills and yearly crashes.
>>
>>17314661
It looks familiar, what is it? Mitsubishi? Isuzu?
>>
>>17314706
Extra weight. All that body and interior and seats raise the weight by 1,200 lbs over a single cab long bed truck.

There are days where an Excursion or Suburban would be nice to have. Load up friends and sit in ice cold A/C and comfy & quiet at 75 mph.

I dont know, Subbies are my favorite.
My dad had like 5 of them when I was a kid (pic related, same config) and he used them to tow a lot.
Super reliable, top aesthetic, intimidating as fuck, and they didnt guzzle that much gas. Best part is that even when you tow full speed on the hgihway you use just as much gas as empty.
>>
>>17315302
I had the same body style suburban but mine was green. I rebuilt the engine at 330k and 400 miles later it shat the cam out the back of the block into the flywheel and I wound up selling it to pick n pull because I needed the money. I miss my 84 :'(
>>
I got an explorer and it's the most useful vehicle in the world, but I think It's on its way out :(

Are there any SUVs that aren't suburban sized that I could get after this one dies?
>>
>>17315631
Tahoe/Yukon/Blazer/Escalade would be good candidates but the Suburban isn't all that much bigger. If nothing else I'd recommend you at least test drive one since the Suburban 2500s are a lot more robust and often quite a bit cheaper than the shorter wheelbase models. Can't really go wrong with any of the 90s GM "fullsize" SUVs, especially the 96+ models. In exterior dimensions they're closer to midsize.

You need a car that uses natural gas as fuel, either LPG (Propane) or CNG (Compressed natural gas). Is so economical that you won't believe and it's also much better for the environment than fossile fuels. But in case of SUV or Pick-up you may also want a diesel if plan to tow things. Neither of these are popular in America, they like more gasoline
>>
>>17315844

In cars 20 inches almost make the difference between compact and fullsize.

Our semi trucks are probably faster than your 0.7l shitboxes. I bet the average speeds on most American highways is higher than a German highway.

The 5W4 Tahoes just have the regular 4wd truck suspension, but the 9C1s are pursuit rated, and are certified to do things like make J turns without rolling over. The 4wd 9C1s are faster off the line and on gravel, but are limited to 121 mph, while the 2wd 9C1s are limited to 139 mph.
>>17311282
The Nissan Juke is only 200 lbs heavier than a VW Golf, it's not a big car in any way, it's just taller than your preferred shitboxes.
>>
>>17315302

>130 HP

why
>>
>>17316102
When you're already over 200 inches, 20 inches is 10%.

It's not a big deal, and it really makes the 3rd row more useful.
>>
>>17316288
>20" difference for an ant is like 2000% bigger
>do you NEED an SUV 2000% bigger than a tahoe?
>>
>>17316285
what did he mean by this
>>
>>17316285
Because torque and reliability. It makes that at low rpm's for cruising, Like a diesel. It's also why it's probably on it's original engine and still running fine.
>>
>>17316288
The 3rd row is just as spacious as in the Tahoe, only the cargo space gets bigger. And how many people need seven seats anyway?
>>
>not driving literally the best SUV

granted the suburban is nice, two of my friends own them, one of which has almost 300000 miles and is floored daily and shows no sign of dying soon
>>
>>17316313
Before 2000 The Tahoe didn't even have a 3rd row.

Is that even a real SUV? I thought it was a crossover. Regardless, they do not have longevity of a Suburban.
>>
>>17316354
And to be clear, I'm not saying the Suburban is better because it sold more. All I'm saying is that there's more than four times as many Suburbans on the road and yet there are more MDXs failing.

The newer MDXs apparently have pretty good projector headlights so I've been on the lookout for them.
>>
>>17316321
>he literally thinks the best SUV isnt the 7th gen Subbie
you can't tow as good, you can't survive rot as good, you can't push, pull and punch things out of the way as good, and you can't reliability as good
>>
>>17316366
MDX's are powered by a Accord drivetrain so of course they're not going to last. Fuck newer Acura headlights. Those fuckers are aimed badly from the factory and scatter light like a motherfucker.

I can tolerate all this suburban pride talk, despite my personal knowledge of Expedition's superiority. However, I will not stand for someone to bring a car to a thread about trucks. Take your little toy, and don't play in traffic. You'll only hurt yourself.

In...?
>>
>>17316620
Not him, but I think the electrics and dash are nicer in an Expedition.

Doesn't mean that it's the better truck, the 5.4 means it isn't.

Only Ford SUV that's "better" overall than any given suburban is a 7.3 Excursion.

Only recently (2010 and onwards) people i ngeneral demanded thigns with nicer interiors and more equipments like power steering and A/C. We were pretty much used to just want something with wheels - since it sold out, the big four - GM, VW, Ford and FIAT didn't care about improving stuff that much.

Obviously there were gems here and there, like pic related. But things significantly improved to be quite honest.

A 6.2L engine should be making far above 130 HP but oil crisis-era GM didn't know how to accomplish that for a while. The base engine for that generation was a 350CID (5.7L) V8 and that made even less power, which is a fucking disgrace.
>>
>>17316634
Why haven't GM figured out how to put independent rear suspension on the suburban? Ford has been doing it for 14 years.

The 6.2L was a diesel engine for that generation, the 305 made also made low hp, more than the diesel, but has a lot of torque.
Also a majority of the older suburbans I've found/have had in my life were big blocks.
Most of the time when we've sold ours after running it into the ground, the people buying them usually talk about yanking out and rebuilding the engine for something else.

I own a Z71 from 2001
It's the most reliable car I've ever owned.
I'm sitting with 160k miles on it, and still use it to haul things around and go on trips, and it's also my DD.
Can't say about the newer models though.

That would destroy the tow rating which is already not the greatest and there's not really any other GM platforms other than the truck platform that would handle the massive body. You'd get a Acadia Denali or whatever if you want IRS.
>>
>>17310435
The GMT900 brakes were far superior the the 400s & 800s
>>
>>17317123
Why would you want IRS on the Burb?

The 6 BOF GM full size models (Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Yukon XL, Escalade, and Escalade ESV) have a 65% marketshare.

Ford moving to IRS actually hurt their marketshare.
>>
>>17317123
why would you replace the super strong simple solid axel with more complicated IRS when the whole purpose of the vehicle is carrying people, stuff, and towing

I'd talk about two door Tahoes/Yukons (or Blazers/Jimmys).

Burbans to me are just bloated minivans for single mothers that can't drive for shit, same goes for the shorter Tahoe... That or a cargo vehicle that don't want a van or pickup.

Wish they brought back the two door coupeuvs, only SUV I'd buy.
>>
>>17316940
deezel 6.2s aren't made for HP, but they shit out torks like there's no tommorrow
you can tow anything you have in mind
However the 230hp 6.5 turbo diesel is better in every way because more power, more torque, and upgraded brakes and chassis.
>>17317274
>That would destroy the tow rating which is already not the greatest
how much?
I know 7th gen Subbies can tow up to 20 tons of shit in the US.
