Only 8 days, this meet was planned too far in advance
>>

Are you retarded? People work so if you plan in advance they can request off and in general less things go wrong if there's time to plan and amend things.
>>
>>17311872
>Only 8 days, this meet was planned too far in advance
Okay, let's not plan the next Meet in advance but wait to the last minute to plan? And there's no telling how long planning takes because different people give their inputs at different times.

In past occasions, one week notice resulted in most people not being able to show up. Two weeks notice was better and many were able to show up although some people needed more time.
>>
>>17311872
>Only 8 days, this meet was planned too far in advance

Without that advance time, we might not have been able to inspect that Index town route! SO we'd all drive up and have to turn back after six miles due to road closure. It was fortunate there was enough days between the public announcement of the Meet and the actual day of the Meet to do an inspection of the route. Thank you to the two that went to check out the driving route.

Nah, what would be better is a tighter time of arrival. More like "Meet at 11AM" and that is the Meet begins rather than 11:30AM. That way people will try to arrive by then instead of arriving by 11:30AM.

Frederick Trump, grandfather of future U.S. President Donald Trump, was also active in the town before it became a ghost town. He operated a boom-town hotel and brothel there. It was the site of the WA state's biggest gold rush despite coal being one of the things mined in the state. That's why you have names in the Bellevue area such as "Coal Creek" since that area and Renton had coal mines.

Inhabited "ghost towns" would be more like what Silverton (along our driving route) is. You can see Silverton on OP's driving map.

>>17319775
>Dat 80s bugflector
Do people still call them bug deflectors? In practice, it seems it was less for bugs than for preventing stone chips and sand chips on the hood and windshield glass. My grandfather had one and he called it a stone deflector. Back in those days when flexible clear coat wasn't on everything to strengthen and reduce chipping, the chance of rust was greater from all those chips in the paint. And windshields got those tiny sparkles due to sand pitting the glass with the tiniest of nearly microscopic chips.

The modern bug deflector has no obvious ugly shield sticking out up front. Instead, the upper front nose is made of polymer and is painted the same color as the rest of the body. Like the bug deflector, it takes the hits, generates a deflecting wind, and cannot rust.

Most people just drive alone because not everyone is interested in scenic twisty mountain drives done at fast speed. I took a coworker on a twisty but safe city road before and he got pretty scared even though I was not more than 5 over the speed limit. I guess Meet type drives are not for everyone!

You could also order the food "TO GO" at the same shopping plaza as that Albertsons. There's a TeriYaki-Bowl opens at 11AM and the Fortune Valley opens at 10:30AM. I assume there will be a "snack break" sooner or later in the drive, so if you don't mind your food cooled down (pick something that stays good), then try that.

Or you can assume that everyone will get together for a dinner together at one of the local restaurants before we go our separate ways. What we decide will probably be finalized when we get there.

It can be a tougher drive when you come alone. With company a drive from portland seems easier to me. Back before the seattle-area got a Fry's Electronics retail store (located in the suburb city Renton, WA), we used to drive down to portland once in awhile to check out the Fry's Electronics retail store there. But since several of us went together, the drive wasn't so tough.

Thanks. It looks like Yelp reviews compliment them for their portion sizes based upon the hash brown size. But before I get there, I have to pass by the Reptile Petting Zoo across from the BBQ place. They have an albino crocodile. They even have lots of snakes (but no plane). Snohomish County seems to have all these petting zoos. Didn't you guys pass by the Australian animal petting zoo on a previous Meet?

>>17331205
>The longest I've gone behind the wheel is four and a half hours in a day
I think having frequent rest stops to walk around and look at non-moving scenery lets you recover from driving. Portland to Buckley is a longer drive. But things are lush and green and its a twisty road and there are some places with big pullouts large enough for all of us to fit our cars.

The lush forest driving season is so short. Last year, the intermittent rains started up mid september and then became frequent through october to the beginning of may this year. Then suddenly, it seemed like the rains turned off except for the sprinkle a few days ago. So I will go to both the june 10th and 24th drives. Otherwise, the long rainy season is just a few months away. I want to drive a few places before it's too late to avoid the rains and roads being closed for the season.
>>
Alright mates I'll be at the second one for sure then. (Not the portlandfag), hope you make it btw

Just remember to keep an eye out for the weather report if you're riding a bike. It's supposed to be sunny in seattle on saturday. But Monroe is a different area.

I get weather reports simply by googling:
monroe washington weather

Isn't the best time after a short rain? That's what June usually gets. There can be a 20 minute rain and the rest of the day is sunny. But that's still classed by the weather service as a rainy day. Then the fog rises up among the tree and you can see sort of far ahead but not perfectly due to the mist. It's sort of ethereal.
>>

>Looks like it's gonna rain on Saturday
Most of the past May days with rain only had short bursts that stopped. But the weather service still marks that day as a rain day.

CB is in the 27Mhz frequency band. There was an expansion.to the 49Mhz band to provide room for more channels. The the FRS type radios opened up the 480Mhz band using FM instead of AM.

Because the chinese sell amateur radio gear cheaply, many people bought that from Aliexpress (or other places like Amazon and Ebay) and used it especially in the 2M (two meter) wavelength range. Of course, ham radio gear use on many bands requires not only a license, but rigorous examinations. Since no one really enforces the law, people have been usurping the spectrum from the hams more and more. As long as the chinese gear isn't used to transmit on the police bands, no one comes after you since the amateur radio operators are basically helpless.

Most ham radio operators are retired technical people or retired military. And they generally are republican for some strange reason. They have activities called "Fox Hunts" where they practice tracking down a radio transmitter that broadcasts intermittently. One of the hams pretends to be the fox. He takes a weak mobile transmitter and broadcasts and can move around just a little bit. So it is not like he is at the Shell station in Monroe and then races over to Sultan city hall the next minute. The hams will build or buy specialty gear to help them do radio tracking. They also have the advantage of remotely operated stations that can automatically slave highly directional antennas and then text the data to the smartphones of the hams out there in the field looking.

So before you put them down, some of these people consider tracking to be a serious hobby where they improve their tracking times just like you improve your times at the racetrack. You don't with your car to the racetrack or dino it? Then you are not as serious about your car hobby as many of these hams are serious about their radio and gear fetish hobby. Some of these rich prosumer hobbyists have gotten together and even put up their own satellites (five working satellites now,).

As mobile and fast moving as a Meet pack is going to be, getting tracked won't happen.

You're the one that knows the side look of that car with its sticker positions. If you want to catch up with that person, you might look for that car at the other non-driving casual meets like the rich people's drive up car displays in redmond on saturday mornings. Those meets are for social climbers and some business cards get traded around. I can see some stuck up people would want to go to things like that to prance around and feel stuck up themselves.

I'm betting that guy would go more to the root beer type meet than redmond.

Would someone start the new Buckley Meet thread?

>JUNE 24TH MEET

The Meet will start at Wally's Drive-In:
282 WA-410, Buckley, WA 98321

Wally's Buckley: http://www.wallysrestaurants.com/
Map: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Wally's+Drive-In/@47.165351,-122.027313,15z

The Meet starts at 11am where we gather together at the Wally meeting spot. While we wait for others to show up or top off their gas, we'll make some more plans. Some people show up even earlier because they might eat lunch before the Meet. Everyone will be rolling out at 1130am. There are panoramic views as you drive on roads atop cliffs with no guard rails to spoil your view.

The route will start down 410 up thru the mount rainier park to the Paradise Inn major tourist destination. It's multiple parking lots are full unless you arrive before 9AM so we can't park there. We will then go down the other side through Elbe and back to the starting location. There is a shady rest stop with lots of parking. It has nature trails good for scenic walks and dog walking. It's a well-positioned rest stop along some trails and even has water available.

As of right now it is bring your own food since there is no agreement as of yet to have a cookout along the drive. Usually people have brought sealed snacks and drinks to share. As with past Meets, people can gather to eat dinner together at a restaurant at the end of the Meet. Some people take pictures with their phones and beam them over to others (or collect some) at that time.

Stops along the route will be made as the group sees fit.

I always liked black cats. This is Mr Snacks. I had a scare where I almost slid off the road trying to keep up. The car did slide but there was enough road with no pebbles or leaf debris on it so I had enough friction to stay on pavement. After that scare, I drove even slower.

So you guys will definitely keep on losing me since you go so far ahead I don't see you anymore. That happened on the drive up the mountain and the drive down the mountain. If you make any turns, I won't see where you've gone. And when I wreck, no one knows since I am at the tail end of the pack. When I was further up in the pack, the one in front of me didn't bother to slow down but raced out of view around a right turn. That caused me to go straight and everyone else in the pack followed me wrongly! After that, I could only go to the end of the pack.

The pack also raced down the mountain and I guess I somehow took the wrong turn going through lots of roundabouts. By then, I was a bit far from Monroe so I just headed home and missed dinner at any restaurant with you fast driving guys.
>>
>>17356834
we thought your broke off to head home. the meet fizzled out pretty quick after we got back to granite, maybe another 45 min of bsing as we took off.
we had a lot of new people that didnt follow group etiquette, we'll have to push that a little more next time and make sure people with radios are more dispersed including a cleanup driver to keep tabs on everyone.

No, I lost the pack as I couldn't keep up. Trying to keep up forced me to almost wreck. After that near wreck, I was scared and drove slower.

>will you be getting a radio for future meets as well?
What model? I assume Amazon's marketplace has multiple resellers.

>group etiquette
Well, I am at fault too. I treated the Meet as an adventure of which any frustrations are part of the event. Thus, I left my gear at home. No maps. No laptop. No cellphone. For me, it is a "Driving Adventure" meant to pull me out of my sterile comfort zone. The only thing I use OnStar to track the number of hard accelerations, hard braking, etc.

I really almost wrecked the car. If there had been an oncoming car or bicyclists in the other lane, that would be bad news. Hooray for manslaughter of bicyclists. But when racing, the law classes that as murder 3 in charging because it is a deliberate action. But the plea bargain would move it to manslaughter 1 if I accepted the fines and prison time. My main concern is not the prison, but insurance does not cover racing. So no matter what, I would need the lawyers to make sure I was not charged with racing in any accident.

Insurance companies will try to abandon their client to avoid the wrongful death lawsuits. It would be hard to avoid racing charges in my car because OnStar driving records are regularly subpoenaed. It would show I was driving at "racing speeds" up the mountain and down the mountain.

>it seems like the baofengs are the way to go
My toshiba is too "weak" to do anything other than vibrate when it gets a weak signal. If the signal is strong, I heard you guys talk a few times. It sounds like "W ..x s down... asbrals chevron .syy w x[ls stop sign 7x0sl go past lay2 brzzzt " when I get a stronger signal.

Having a Baofeng radio is of marginal use as I can't keep your pace. I don't want to slow the pack down so I'll sit out June 24th.
>>
>>17357140

That would be a shame if you were to sit out the next meet. A lot of people seemed to be glad you attended. I do see what you're saying though.

I also think group etiquette does need to be taken more seriously the next meet. Losing people because of impatience or normies getting in the way definitely sucks; and I'm sure everyone wants to cut out any unnecessary pull-offs.
>>
Maybe break into two groups? The ones who want to stay alive and the ones that want to get arrested?

I'm personally fine with driving near the speed limit and just enjoying the drive, but it seemed like there were a few people anxious to push their cars to the limit. If we're going to do that, I'd recommend we setup an /o/ track day, rather than driving on unfamiliar bumpy back roads with traffic, cyclists and cops.

>Maybe break into two groups?
Not necessary for Rainier because there are enough other tourists on the road that pacing will be slower. We'll need a different strategy than with Mount Baker. Rainier has a mix of stops and tourist traffic that it is possible for other cars to get in between.

The Pack approaches the 4-way multi-stop sign. One Pack members goes. Each other road sends one car after the Pack member because everyone is headed to Rainier park. So, now you have:
1. pack member
2. normie tourist
3. local tourist
4. random car
5. pack member
6. random tourist
7. tourist
8. pack member

That is worst case, but things like that can happen. Or you come to a T-intersection where only the Pack has the stop sign. There are a 3 cars coming in the distance. Pack member #1 goes. One car keeps coming and goes by the stop sign. Pack member #2 now goes. The last car on that other road comes by with no cars behind it for a long distance. The rest of the Pack now enters the road. #1, #2, and the rest are separated by other cars. Baofang communications says for #1, #2 to pull over so the rest can join up. In such a case, it would have been better to just let those three cars zoom on by instead of of taking the first available gap in traffic.

Rainier has other strategies as well. No matter what, everyone is going to group up at the Park Entrance anyways. So racing up in 2 groups at max speed only means the first group has to stand by and wait. But hey, they cannot wait because there is no pullout room there. So they have to go on to Paradise. But what? They still cannot pull out due to cliffs. They cannot slow down and make other cars pass because of double yellow no pass.

Oh hey, there is a pullout, but it has a road going off to the pulloff space. There are lots of these for campers who have camping permits. But if the lead group pulls off there, the 2nd group might not see them at all since they can't block the road.
>>
Is there going to be a meet on the last Saturday of July?
>>
>>17357515
Get on KIK after re-reading the URLs of those past archived threads from last year for all the unused ideas of places to go.

The best two months for driving are July and August especially in the north end of washington closer to the canadian border or the Olympic Peninsula. Of course, those might be trips that are too long for most, so it could also be a smaller Meet. That could also mean that July and August combined together has three Meets with two regular Meets of short driving distances like the recent Monroe one mixed with one longer one such as one to the great North or one around the Olympic Peninsula which includes Hurricane Ridge and Ruby Beach.

Another approach is to have longer drives for the remaining two or three Meets that are undetermined. That means meeting at an earlier time such as 9AM and rolling out at 9:30. Otherwise, there is not enough time to have a Meet that has a longer driving time. Discuss in KIK. There are enough unused ideas and places far away to work with longer drives.

If you want Meets like those in 2016 which combined both a Drive plus another side activity (like ice caves, looking for red crystals at ruby beach, hiking the one mile rainforest boardwalk in the olympic forest), then you'll need to start at an earlier time than 11:30AM. The rainy season is really rainy on the peninsula, so if there is a going to be any Meet there, make it in July or August.
>>
>>17357515
>last Saturday of July
That would waste July. Why not middle of july, middle of august, and the last meet of the year on the 2nd week of september? Any later and you are into the rain unless people want to go driving in the rain? Remember, rain plus thick mats of fallen leaves on the road means low traction on any curved road.

It's possible to have "Zero Day" Meet in October if there is a no-rain day and the leaves are in their autumn color. But "zero day" actually means one or two day notice based on the weather report. And the day might be a weekday.

>hiking the one mile rainforest boardwalk in the olympic forest

The only time I did this, it was sunny. I wouldn't mind doing it in the rain, it is a rainforest after all. But then again, I'm one of the guys who would be in the "stay alive" group instead of the "get arrested" group. I like to take things slow and comfy.
>>
>>17358180
That's not too frequent BECAUSE no one is required to go to every meetup that exists. But if there were 2 per month, I'd go to both. This is the summer season after all and if you're going to drive for pleasure and see interesting scenery for pleasure and have side events for pleasure, this is a good time to do that.

People choose which one to go to. They can go once per month or once every 2 months if they so choose. It's just that the rainy season road washouts and the ice season makes roads in the mountain areas not so good.
>>
After we lost Mr. Snacks and the Mercedes everyone agreed that we could slow down if that was the consensus and I definitely think that should be the case next time since the next meet is in Paradise and there'll be park rangers there not to mention you have to pay to drive there and no one wants to pay just to have to pay a ticket on top of that.

It is $25 now. It had a price inflation since people went up there last year. Description at:

Visiting Mount Rainier National Park:
https://visitrainier.com/pass-requirements/

Too Long Don't Read section: =========

>that's washington in a nutshell
You mean that's the USA Federal Tax Cuts in a nutshell. Mount Rainier is part of the USA National Parks Service (NPS). Their fees are separate from the Washington state parks service.

For specific USA federal NPS Rainier park fees, see:
https://www.nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/fees.htm

The NPS rainier annual pass was $30 in 2014, went to $40 in 2015, and went to $50 in 2016. I paid $20 per car last year but the fee is now $25 per car. Motorcycles got it the worst since it was $5 and went up to $20. If the WAT Honda has antigrav to let it be lifted easily, it should be moved inside the Taco. Then after passing the entrance, take the WAT Honda back out and save $20 courtesy of your antigrav.

The state of washington also manages a lot of state parks surrounding the national park. Washington State has a simple annual parks pass called the Discover Pass.
http://www.discoverpass.wa.gov/

If WA park fee deposit boxes look strange, it's because they evolved that way due to people breaking open the deposit boxes for the money inside.
>>
>>17358180
>Would it be possible to have two meetups per month or is that too frequent?
The season for sunny Meets is short, so gotta pack them in there!
>>
>>17358498
>bullshit but thats washington in a nutshell
Tax cuts. We're on the roadway and don't see it, but a lot of times, there were embankment constructs to stabilize the roadway. That's got to cost money and it looks like risky work to perform. In the USA, dangerous roads are closed to the public, but in other countries, they remain open for use.

http://news.southamerica.travel/most-dangerous-roads-in-south-america/

In particular, the episode 6 of Top Gear series 14 shows travel on one of these rain forest roads. That was the Top Gear: Bolivia Special.

>>
>>17362899
>since the $30 tabs bill was passed?
The state legislators re-interpreted the meaning of various additional related car registration fees and then ADDED them onto the tabs fee.

Basic Tab Fee (based on model value) $30
Additional fee for administration: $1000
Additional fee for tabs being shiny: $1000
Additional fee for tabs having sticky back: $1000
Etcetera.

It's absurd how out of control the government can be when the want their money. Years ago, when the light rail to almost nowhere appeared for billions of dollars between the airport and downtown, the voters voted NO. But King County under Ron Sims used their emergency power to overturn the vote into a Yes. What good is voting when they have powers to overturn anything they don't like? Yes, that power was granted to them long ago in a vote.

That darn light rail doesn't even stop near Southcenter's various major shopping districts. So it's usage for 4 billion dollars is pretty light.
