I just put new tires on it and it rides great. Extremely smooth with the air suspension, and it's the only bike I've ridden 350 miles in a day and not had ass / back / arm fatigue at all. It's like sitting in a chair that can roll down the highway at 75 effortlessly. It sounds like a tractor at low RPM, but if you rip the throttle back it totally changes tune and pulls strong all the way to the end of the speedometer. First gear is a little short, but that's probably a necessity with the full fairing versions when you've got 200lbs of luggage and your fat wife on the back. 5th gear cruises perfectly anywhere from 50 up.

Carving through some lazy forest twisties at ~55-60 felt great, like butter over glass. It's surprisingly nimble and corners well once you get used to the huge weight of the bike. I haven't scraped pegs yet, but I wouldn't really want to anyway. The heads stick so far out the side you could probably scrape them if you decided to push it.

I'm not a big fan of the look or extra weight that come with full fairings, so this bike was a great find for me. That said, I'm probably going to install a windshield on mine. 55mph and below it's as comfy as you've ever been, but when you start edging up on 65-75, you definitely start to feel the wind with the upright riding position. I think even a fairly small windshield will help a lot.

10/10 for lazy weekend cruising or wandering down to the bar. If you want something that'll grab you by the balls and tickle your prostate, look elsewhere.

When the bike is straight up the oil bubble on the engine is like 99% full, but when the bike is on kickstand the bubble is nearly empty. the bubble indicates it should be around 60 to 80% full. Not going to lie, forward controls are incredibly comfortable. If I ever replace the Goldwing with something else for touring, it's going to be something with forward controls.

There's a kit for putting boards on it, but honestly I don't see them being much more comfortable than the huge flat pegs it already has. It's the knee angle that makes it.

I guess I could put the crash bars on and get some universal pegs to put my feet up on highway rides.
>>
>>17299994

If you don't want oil to be dribbling out of your breather for the next few days, you should drain a little out.

When I over-fill my XR it spits out of the crankcase breather into the air box and makes a mess of my side panel and frame.
>>
>>17300005

Floorboards are nice because you can flat foot at multiple knee angles, or go bowlegged and rest the side of your heels with toes outward. I need to get the shift lever from a softtail and cut the extended shaft off of it and weld it to a dyna lever so I can throw a heel-toe on my dyna now.

I had mini foldout floorboards, hated em, forward pegs, they were ok, but floorboards are just absolutely silly in how comfortable they make things, plus when you get on really shitty gravel and crush you can put half your foot on them and stand easily.

Thank you for your valuable opinion, friend :)

>>17300320

Decel pop is caused by a bike running too lean, which is caused by a few things. If it's EFI its probably just tuned to meet EPA requirements and will pop regardless unless you richen the tune, you may also have an exhaust leak, if it's carb you could have a partially obstructed fuel delivery going on, or an exhaust leak.

Your carbs are fucking dirty man, clean em. Make sure you got no exhaust leak. If they sat with gas all winter you probably varnished em right the fuck up.
>>
>>17300320
popping on decel usually means youre running lean. id just clean the carbs and see what happens. maybe do a leakdown and check compression? i dont really know though, im not a mechanic

You can get a Street 500 for $3000, a Sportster for a little more, a Dyna for sub $10k, a softail from $10k all the way to $30k and the massive touring frames like that street glide from $20k+

I don't see the point of a Street Glide or a CVO (CVO being Harleys inhouse customs people) but some guys like those huge fairings with the huge stereos, built in GPS and other assorted fuckery, sattelite radios and what other shit they got on em like voice activated features, big amplifiers, subwoofers and all that crap.

That's called a primary, yes it's where the crank is connected to the transmission via the primary chain. It's because the crankcase and transmission are not one unit like lots of metrics. There are exceptions like the Sportster models which are all in one but in this case the transmission is a seperate serviceable, replaceable upgradeable unit.

Heres what's inside, mostly.
>>
>>17300622
That the primary drive, it houses the stator, clutch, and primary drive chain.

Here it is all bolted back together, the primary houses the compensator, the primary chain, tensioner, clutch and is where the starter engages everything. It keeps the clutch bathed in its own oil which allows seperate lube for the motor, primary/clutch and transmission. It makes servicing anything really, really fucking easy compared to a unitized crankcase/transmission combo....

Like my XS650, if my transmission has a problem the whole motors got to come apart essentially, in this case it's removing the primary, chain, drive belt, lines and then unbolting the transmission housing from the engine case so I can service or replace it if need be.

I've described Harleys as farm requipment on /dbt/ threads more than a few times and the analogy is really quite apt.

Really the only bad thing is that it's huge and heavy.

I'd rather ride an "Adventure Touring" bike on a long trip than a Harley, the seating position just doesn't work for me on a cruiser.

Simple to fix is usually a good thing though.

But honestly, how often does a motorcycle transmission fail?

I ride Supermotos... and I've heard of WR450 3rd gear having issues on occasion, but it's always dudes clutching up third gear wheelies really harshly. Husqvarna 610 with gear coating delaminating after like 50k KM... not a big deal there... other than that I haven't heard of any trannys quitting life on motorcycles.

>>
>>17300713

I've not once heard of a common issue with the transmissions on any of the bikes I've owned, and I've never had one personally.

Current XR650L and GL1100 gearboxes last literally forever apparently. GL1100 by the way is another bike that's huge and heavy, but it's as comfortable as you would ever ask of a bike.
>>
>>17300713

When I rebuilt my XS650 the gears were all chowdered to fuck but that motorcycles almost what, 35 years old and the exception doesn't prove the rule.

The inverse of the transmission is especially true on Harleys because upgrading the motors is a huge thing and people usually do it in increments, top end kit from SE here, S&S lower end there, then they pull that motor and slop in something completely different. Legobikes.

And motors can just fucking fail if you don't treat them right. I have a friend who just did nearly 1400km in a little over 10 hours, so other than stops he basically kept his 1000lb harley bagger going 140km/hr while hauling a tent trailer.

By the time he stopped he couldn't fire the bike again, cooked the motor. Rear cylinder got so hot it melted the automatic compression release and spat it out, housings fucked, guaranteed the engines destroyed.

He's got the money to do that kind of crazy shit though so eh, go hard. He's already got his bagger trailered the whole way home and it's at the shop getting a new motor swapped in.

My dad had over 100k KM on his early 90s FLHTC, only thing that ever broke was the guide on the rear sprocket for the belt. And one time the dealer put factory oil in it ( was in for body work ) and he was riding it and it got really hot, so he stopped at a shop and bought 20W50 oil and it didn't get as hot after that.

He had done almost every mod to the engine except cams. I remember doing 180kmh on the back on the highway when I was like 7, fun times.

The F4i is the supirior choice for 1/4 to 1/3rd the cost.

You can spend the rest of setting it up however you want ergonomically and suspension wise and still have a ton left over.

Because they were the cheapest 13" wheels I could find that fit, to upgrade from the 12" wheels it came with... I now have $40/piece tires, instead of $75/piece tires, and they last longer.

Oh it would have been no problem if it was just a normal rider but the mans a brick shithouse so I'm sure the bike was over its GVWR, the trailer is a 345lb unit. Mechanical items have their limitations and he found it. This was after years of hauling other bikes to rallys with his, so thats 800lbs+ being hauled there + rider, sometimes his wifes. Plus doing burnouts on the pit until his rear tires exploded.
>>
>>17300792
>What dirt bikes go for cheap around here.
None. They are all over priced. Your best bet would be a YZ250 for $1000-$1500 with a heavier flywheel. That is assuming you can transport it to and from trails.

Reason being, the 2 strokes are cheap as fuck to rebuild.

If you are patient you can get a DRZ400 or KLX400 for a tick over $2000 that is street legal.
>>
>>17300793
>>17300774

Missing the part about the trailer there folks, rider plus loaded up bike, plus trailer, everything has a failure point.

I've got friends that do 200km/hr on their dynas through prairie stretches nearly everyday and don't have an issue but the power to weight ratio is a little more favorable towards the bike in those cases.

I haven't actually looked anything up cause I know I don't have the money. But this would be pure off road since I have a truck.
I know YZ's some a little, friend had one. But I'm more familiar with honda.

May just buy something back home in Cali and bring it up here.
Do you think it'd be cheaper to rebuild this CR500, in general to anyone reading.

Goldwings pull two fat old fucks, plus a couple hundred pounds of gear, plus a trailer all the time at 85mph for full days, weeks at a time and run to over 100,000 miles.

Either there was something else wrong with the bike that exacerbated the problem or its shit. One of the two.

Won't ever know, the rear jug usually runs hotter since airflow is coming off the front on a v-twin but hell if one of his injectors was being a cocksucker and for some reason he didn't get a code he's losing cooling there, could have been a lubrication problem, won't know. He's got a good attitude about it though since now it lets him put in a bigger motor.

Different strokes for different folks, posting the correct picture this time, this bike is a 2017 Dyna Lowrider S, about 18K MSRP, owners had a new motor built for it currently without ever havin the factory motor used. Crank up with hurricane jugs, one off custom heads, crank pins were welded, case was clearanced, custom cams ground, new lighter rods were used, new pistons shooting for 124ci or 2032cc.
Everything race prepped to his specs from crank to throttle body will be something like $15-20K just for the motor.

Some guys just have bigger wallets.Be interesting to see what it does on the dyno.

>>
>>17301851
>Is 300 enough?
Is it your first bike? Do you have poor self control? Do you value MPG over the ability to pull at any speed?
If you answered yes to one or more of those questions then yes, get a 300
>>
>>17301851
For city streets get either a standard or a small """""""sports"""""""" bike

ADV bikes:
Pros
>good for potholes
>high riding position
>reasonable comfy
>wide handlebars make maneuvering easier
>usually there's storage available
Cons
>usually pigfat
>wide handlebars make lanesplitting harder
>big wheels and soft suspensions make cornering harder

Ninjette and the like:
pros:
>Very light
>narrow so you'll fit in the tightest holes
>easy to use
>common
>you'll appreciate your big bike more when you upgrade
Cons:
>uncomfortable for the larger gentlemen
>common
>often beat up by the previous owner (but also dirt cheap for that reason)
>you'll get laughed at by girls

Actually the real question is "is it your first bike?"
I assumed because you're asking about 300s
In which case get an SV650 (the old one)
>>
>>17301892
If you value MPGs over everything else then get either one of the hondas. The cb500, an nc700 or cbr250r all have significantly higher MPGs on fuelly than even the ninja 250

Dude. The cbr will survive DAYS at redline. Sounds as though you've got a deeper issue...

Slow: No shit, sherlock. My bike gets impounded I'm out of work.
Until I get the money to get it back. With the job I can no longer ride to...
Bikes make the rest of the world go round. It's shitty elitist man-children that keeps them bougie in the us.

I just calmly ride out. Isolation of the houses is good enough.

i had always wanted to move to the country to be a hermit, but then i realized that everyone in a small town knows each other. Cities have a sort of anonymity to them.

but i live in a small town in a city, so it means having neighbors while also almost knowing everybody.

because you are going to have potentially hundreds of "neighbours" most of whom will never know or care you exist

I have to ride between two houses of my neighbours, alleyway is maybe 1,5m wide. That's why I asked them about it, if they could here it, I would just start it on the street, but they can't so I can ride.

>>17302378
You don't need your neighbours as much. I say hi to my direct neighbours and that's about it. Have only one neighbouring house I visit regularly, the daughter is a friend if mine.

Bring all your gear but also a change of clothes. in a duffel bag etc carried on the bike. Some wipes and a towel might be a good idea if it's raining or really hot. If your helmet is tight enough to leave marks try a balaclava or a slightly easier fitting helmet if you can't arrive early enough.
I think it would be a bad idea to ride in wearing no gear and all your things in your pockets and the bike on one wheel and doing a burnout as you leave or something, but if you can come in respectably and also showing you are responsible with the bike and can easily still carry whatever is reasonable for your job it wouldn't be a problem.
