I am American you turd. I just wish we could get those modern vehicles here (ie the selectivity).

4runner and xterras are very capable (especially for going down areas where you can bring your trailer) but it'd be nice to offer a patrol or land cruiser for people who live in the mountains or farm area.

Anyway, enjoy your ride overlanding, anon. More pictures of dirtbike trails when you can.

How big is the jump from BFG AT KO2'S to BFG Mud Terrains? Both would be 31x10.5x15. my 27" Firestone Destination's aren't bad but I'm mostly either driving in sand, or hugging the edge of a rut.

Unironic "get a new trucc"

Also, I fucking hate mud washboards where the ruts are the same length as your wheelbase and you vertically go up and down really quickly and rattle your bones / brains.

>mfw commuting home down boundary today
>strafing ruts from a truck before me
>bounce up and down 7 times in succession and had to literally stop because i thought i had a concussion
At least I could squeeze in some offroading today as haven't had a mud client in 2 weeks. I love consession roads while thunderstorming.

Anyway, what do you mean by "big of a jump"? As in can you go up 5 cm without a lift kit? Wanna buy my 33 inch KO2s? :^)

MTs really do make a big difference in mud, as they should. Better in sand as well.

ATs are ofcourse better on the pavement
>>
>>17298892
ATs you've seen are "all terrain" which is why HeapFags really like them for both pavement driving and offroad capability. Mud Terrain is BFG's answer to that as they are really, really noisey on the road (more so than the KO2s, anyway) and apparently wear faster. I think they're also kept at a lower PSI recommendation than KO2s as well.

If you're continuously getting stuck in 2wd, it may be worth chaining your tyres before and after mudbogging with friends. I'm not sure they would help as much as you want them to without the appropriate clearance.

Have you tried airing down your KO2s yet? If you're not doing much highway driving, you may be able to get away with running 25 PSI on the KO2s all the time. That will really help you mudding

Will contribute shit cell phone picture for now. My photographer is compressing trail pictures that I'll post later. Was nice to finally be able to get offroad again and try out the tires. They perform exceptionally well, even in 2WD. Never got stuck but did manage to smack both front fenders and fold them in. Definitely time to get the bigger lift put on.

>You mean the offset that literally every Jeep ever uses?
Correct, the "literally every Jeep" that ends up with rapidly accelerated wear and wooly steering.
>you meant ball joints and unit bearings, not bushings and tie rods.
May as well add those to the mix, yes. But I was indeed talking about the little rubber grommets that link your control arms (bushes) and the replaceable ball joints on either end if if your drag link and tie rod (tie rod ends). Unless you have one of those miraculous XJs that has a levitating front differential and a thought controlled steering setup.
>>
>>17299532
Stop pretending to know things, junior, you're embarrassing yourself. Oh wait, are you just afraid of vehicle modification of any kind? Yeah sure, the little bit of offset causes some accelerated wear, so instead of 150,000 miles on a set of ball joints and unit bearings, I'll only get 90,000 miles. Oh me oh my, what ever will I do other than not being a poorfag? And the only thing that'll get to the steering is the bigger tires, and then I'll upgrade. Mind you, the lift I already own includes new control arms upper and lower, with heim joints, an upgraded adjustable track bar, and upgraded tie rod. Quit being a wet blanket, you very obviously jealous, do nothing, pavement queen.

right. which is a lot to be strapped to your roof. most lifted rigs will get tippy in off camber situations with half that weight on the top
>>
>>17299887
Main reason I got mine was the lack of space in the 4runner.

Also it's a bitch not being able to.move the truck after you set up camp, but you get used to that too

Brother paid 1500 for a large canvas tent that pops up in seconds on a frame for him and his senpai. Waterproof, has additional awnings, can attach to the 4wd awning and sleeps 2 adults and 2 kids easily with plenty of room to spare. Not gonna lie I'm kinda jelly.

>>
>>17299957
yeah that would really be the only way around it. i dont have a lot of crawling around here anyway if im honest with myself but i do like to get E X T R E M E from time to time

>>17299970
yeah the canvas ones like his are a lot cheaper and still incredibly nice desu. they dont set up in seconds though, more like 4-5 min (which i realize is still really short) but things like the maggiolina airtop are literally 3-4 seconds. just unhook a few hinges and it uses hydraulics to set itself in place and youre done.

its funny. set up times were not always a priority to me, but the longer i do this the more important they become to me. i want to pull in, have a beer in my hand and be sitting in my chair with a fire blazing in a few minutes. fucking with all that other shit really wears you down over time.

Am I going to die if I spin my driveshafts at 5500rpm? 1200rpm over factory.
>>
>>17300879
Depends. Are your U-joints going bad?
>>
>>17300891
They only have like 250,000 miles on them. I think its cv at the T-case and u joint at the axle.
>>
>>17300898
Doesn't answer my question. Regardless, you're only going to die if the axle-end joint of your driveshaft breaks loose, which would turn your driveshaft into a 3ft metal baseball bat being swung by your T-case at 5500rpm.
>>
>>17300898
Better question is why will your driveshaft be spinning at 5500rpm? Unless you have massive rear gears (~6.00+) and tiny wheels (<26inch), and are traveling very fast (80mph+), you will not see those kinds of speeds.
>>
>>17299992
Well technically with the canvas after you've done the guide ropes and shit you just drag it up and over click click click and it's done. I've used a swag for years and they're incredibly quick to set up or pack up, especially if you leave your camping blankets and pillows inside it. After a few incidents though I wanted a tent with space and something that will get me the fuck off the ground so got a RTT.
>>
>>17300943
This. Wtf are you >>17300898 >>17300879 doing, anon?

Realistically, you should be able to keep it at engine RPM without overreving your U-joint or anything else.

>>17300919
It won't puncture the metal since it'll be hitting it at a slight enough angle to only be slowed down by gravity. It also won't snap immediately like some sort of Final Destination bullshit.
>>
>>17300943
Because 4.56 gears, and 34.3 inch tires, at around 120MPH.
>>
>>17300973
Do you have a death wish? The 5500rpm driveshaft won't kill you (good job on the math though, my math says ~5360rpm at that speed, tire size, and gearing), but the 120MPH on 34s will when a deer jumps out in front of you.
>>
>>17300999
602rpm/MI x 2Mpm x 4.56 ???

>>
>>17301015
(5280 feet per mile *12 inches per foot) divided by (34.3 inch diameter times pi == circumference of wheel) == revolutions per mile. Times 4.56 is driveshaft rev/mile, times 2 is driveshaft rpm.

5362.488 rpm at the driveshaft @120MPH
>>
>>17301015
>>17301041
Unless you have a slushbox, then you'll hit redline at ~100mph, and have to shift into fourth to get to 120mph.
>>
>>17301041
Right, but its a bit moot because 5500rpm + TC lockup + 1:1 trans + 1:1 TC == 5500rpm at 124.whatever mph.

Regardless, is the shaft going to just blow up from the rpm alone? Should I have it precision balanced, or is the factory balance fine?

Both are 454s. Both arw 4x4s with floor shifter. Gas mileage is not a concern. I understand the vortecs are generally better while tbis are easier to repair. Also the 94 is also almost old enough to no longer need emmisons testing.

Wtf this hydraulic steering system like in tractors would not be allowed in Germany for speeds over 60km/h and so it would be forbidden to drive on the highway here. This cylinder in front of the axle is absolute rubbish for off-roading there should at least be a protection in front of it like the Fendt tractors have it.

Yeah, I decided an hour ago that I actually hate this truck and I'm selling this fucking thing. $6000 OBO without the cap or tonneau cover and I'm going to buy a similar condition ZR2 Blazer. My Toyota friend will probably never stop making fun of me for not buying a 4runner, and thinks that the 80 series is completely junk compared to his FJ62.

>Wanna buy my 33 inch KO2s
What size, how old, and how much tread is left? I'm actually interested in them, without wheels though since S10/Blazer bolt patterns are different from Rangers with a 5x4 3/4. Apparently these tiny wheel wells can fit 33in tires if you take the front bumper off, and don't rub at all with a 2in suspension lift.

>mfw truck feels like its bouncing up and down 4inches 6 times a second whenever the rear wheels spin while the suspension is under load

A gearvendors overdrive means it has a splitter. That means your 4-speed has 4 gears, and the gearvendors unit has two ranges (1:1 and OD), giving you 8 combinations. Find out if it is before or after the T-case, after means you can't use the OD range in 4wd without fucking your T-case. Either way, it's a fantastic modification because muh MPGs.

lolwat. what about the 70s then!?

Anyway, my 33 KO2s are off my Land Cruiser, not the Ranger. So I will need the wheels back. I'd probably be going up to 35s and get a set of michelins or duratracs to make the ride a bit more comfortable. I've got a fifth as well. 16 rims.
They're 20k klicks and 18 months old (or I can pull up the receipts along with mileage when I finish cleaning off all the gear oil from everything) or something.

Sry. So very drunk right now. Been wiping off axle grease and oil since 10am and started drinking heavily after it was "finished". Still continuing into this bottle of gin...

Anyway, this bumper cost me around $1k USD and I wanted it as protection for trees and stuff and to mount a winch. They sold another winch mounting plate that hooks up to the bumper which is why I thought you needed to get the $120 winch mount. I'll go measure the winch dimensions tomorrow and see what I got. Maybe you're right - i just haven't looked too much into it because I'm still getting it up to speed after a certain "wet" incident.

Friend gave me his Keeper 10500lb for like $350 and it's just a two prong + ground connexion that hooks into the battery. It also has a universal front and rear trailer hitch plate for the winch. I can give you that if you want it (it's essentially a one inch trailer hitch that connects to the Keeper winch). That way, you can just attach a front/ rear trailer mount and use that plate instead.

I really like how you had to specify LHD because one would naturally assume any manual 70 series turbo diesel is RHD simply due to the rarity. Turbo diesel would be nice just for watercrossings and lack of electronics as you mentioned.

It was after 1998 that all we got were the "rebadged" Lexus variants like the LX470 (technically not a classic 100 since it was based off 120) and then the GX based off the Prado.

Straya got the 105s which are just 100 interiors with 80 drive trains, eh? A few people have done some EU imports of the FJ150s. I'm thinking of renting one when I'm in Iceland in June. Oh and also those weird, tundra based SUVs. The Sequoias

Anyway, there's some guy in Niagara who makes custom tube shit. I think he ended up moving to BC but it won't be hard for him to turn a tube into a plate for a protector rear bumper. Otherwise, they make trail hitch adapters but just have a half-inboard winch plate instead of a hitch itself. You might have to do some fender cropping but can make it work.

I'll just keep an eye out for front winch bumpers. Inboard winch for security and maintaining departure angle while saving on the effort of building one from scratch.

Basically you're right, the 105's unfucked everything the 100 series did to make it a 100% "suburban soccer mum" mobile. They did a fair amount of shit to the chassis so that bull bars, brush guards etc are completely incompatible between the two despite looking almost identical. Was that the one where you have to go through it instead of strafing the sides (counter instinctive to what you learn from all other mudpits)? The one where you're actually strafing the ruts and actually requires some skill to navigate instead of just washboarding your head on the ceiling of your truck while racing the dirt bikers? I don't know a Warren but I probably know someone who might. There's a guy innacity who also owns two FJ40s before they memed hard as well.

Anyway, are 4runners a meme? not if they're cheap, desu.

If you have the time, you could always buy two of them and make one truck with them. There are legitimately a few for under $500 so it's attainable. That's what I was going to do with a land rover discovery ii. Looks like everyone dailies these things or grocery gets with them and they're just put on the market in these prices so that people get them off their lawns. 3rd gens are not any more expensive (for the same quality, anyway).

Then again, i'm hideously drunk and worked over 12 hours today hammering away at cone washers. So I'm a bit more frisky when it comes to ideas right now.

Are the front axle rebuilds only $500 from companies if you have the kit?

Back on point: yeah 80 series have been memed hard by both offroad people and normies. I'm not sure why but around 3-5 years ago, you could still get a 300k FJ80 for around $3k - $4k with some minor issues. They're pretty much delusional everywhere... Most aussies live by the sea so there's that, and some places believe it or not do snow so I assume they salt the road like every other retard around the world does.

I live in a rural area so it's kind of unusual to see much american stuff, aussie 4WD enthusiasts typically stick to their Landcruisers/Hiluxes, Nissan Patrols, Mitsubishi Pajero's and Isuzu/Holden Troopers. Having said that my brother in laws brother owns a fucking nice looking Jeep all modded out. I don't know what make it is, though he relentlessly cops shit for it. Need to get pics of it next time I see him.

Few Land Rovers here and there but literally every single one I have seen they are owned by a city dweller towing their horse trailer around, guess they think they are rich or something.

Cunt, we know you spent hours under the chassis scrubbing the mud off and got it professionally detailed before you took the photos, all the shit you have on it highlights the fact that you have obviously abused the shit out of it offroading.

That was probably an extreme example of an 80 series memer but they still want 10k on average for a Petrol with 400,000km, turbo diesels just add on another 5k because fuck it, Toyota/boomer tax.

My friend dailys a 1989 FJ62 with around 250k miles. 10MPG no matter where or how you drive it. Never left him stranded. There's a bunch of weird small shit that goes bad all the time but important stuff will pretty much never give up. A bunch of people say they're too slow to keep up with traffic but a good running 3F really isn't that bad, but that FJ62 already has a bad engine. It isn't really that bad of an idea.

fj80 owners are quite optimistic, unfortunately. Until they actually go up to $20k and people are actively paying that price for the vehicle, i'd probably just move the land cruisers among the group of people who own them at the prices i bought them for ($7k or so). at least that way there's no chance they'd get stanced or shredded or lost.

Still out on the look for those $2k ones driven by ignorant soccer moms, of course.

I always go wheeling with a full tank, a floor jack, and two 27in spares on 15in aluminum wheels in the bed. The wood is what did it.

Still think I'm going to sell it. Probably going to wait a couple months and pay attention to ZR2 Blazers and crew cab S10's, or convince myself that I can actually afford a suburban or FJ80 when I'm a part time dishwasher. 15mpg and 10mpg are pretty much the same, right?

I DD a 2007 WRX and ride a SV650. I can put my bike in the back of a truck, or haul wood with it, or put anything in there. Bit more difficult to do with a SUV, plus when I inevitably settle down and buy a house, a truck seems just better for all of that stuff. Also I can throw a deer in back.

Look at the post above you. If you can somehow find enough shekles to convert one to a EU based diesel (or a cummies for $10k), then you won't ever have to worry about gas mileage ever again as they can pull 25. The OM602 puts out equal torque and in the LC, I may be able to squeeze 30MPG with swapped heads.

But realistically, why not get one of those XJs that are loafting around here? You may have to put up with random strangers approaching your door to talk to you about Jeeps, but they're still very cheap in SW Onterrible. (or that shitty homemade 4runner that i posted earlier in poutineland)

also,

>>17316075
That XJ looks modded out nicely. The only problem is that you're going to have to repaint it. HAVE TO.

Anyway, that's what everyone says about trucks. But honestly, unless you're doing contracting, you can just get an SUV for comfiness use a trailer that you get for $500 or $1500 later on.

this is coming from a guy with an extended cab ford ranger and an SUV.

>>17316147
I know people who have paid up to $10k for the price of the aftermarket mods alone in their XJ.

This guy is charging $5k for his premodded so even if the engine and transmission shits on you in the first week (which it won't since it's an old AMC at only 300 000km), you can just buy another engine and transmission and have it all be worth it. Custom roof racks aren't cheap - especially if they're professionally done.

I'm just surprised it's been up for 4 days. Something has to be weird with it (probably the paint job and doors, desu). The dash cluster not working can be solved by just buying an aftermarket digital spedometer and tachometer and putting it on the centre console or dash. That way you don't have to fumble around with the instrument cluster and wires. Everything like that is just TLC from vehicles that are 20+ years old.

They'll all have their own little novel issues so you probably won't go wrong with a Blazer, 4runner, XJ, TJ, Ranger, Suburban, Tacoma, etc etc etc.

Oh btw. Apparently someone took the FJ55 (I heard when doing that axle rebuild with a fellow cruiserfag). If it's the same one off the island, he bought it and was inspecting the vehicle at home and when tapping on the frame, he punched it through with a sledgehammer.
So he parted the thing out and stripped it of "valuables" and scrapped the rest.

pros: 454 big block, Cali car barely any rust (went and looked at it), and it has a 12 bolt rear end.

Cons: engine most likely needs a rebuild ( not that big of a problem for me), interior is trashed (going to gut it anyway), and salvage title (dont really care its going to be a green sticker vehicle anyways)

I know a stealership so I could easily extend that 20 days to make it a 25 days. Also, you can get a Temporary pass (not the red T) to get an "appraisal" which means that you can have a maximum legal time before transfers of 30 days. Then with dealer plates, you can extend that to 35 or even 40.

I'll ask him if it's the same Iron Pig since he knows the guy by name. It could be a completely different one but the region / location sounds a bit too similar. He's coming over and looking at the 80 axle tomorrow so I'll ask him about it again.

For those concerned about rust on Tacomas, I own a Gen 1 Tacoma, that specific failure mode for frame rot was due to Toyota's subcontractor Dana fucking up the frame anti-corrosion treatment, It's only an issue for pre-2000 Tacomas and there was a 15yr/unlimited mile free frame replacement program offered by Toyota, so there's a good chance that even if it was an older one it was replaced, just make sure to check that it was.
>>
>>17320547
Also you can get prefabricated caps that you can weld over the frame to strengthen that specific area if the frame wasn't replaced for like 130$.
>>
>>17320547
>It's only an issue for pre-2000 Tacomas
How can you still believe that? Toyota has been trying to downplay this but the recall keeps expanding both in year range and model range. Every time they've said the problem is for sure contained to a small year range of a particular model, the recall was expanded later.

>>17320305
Both are shit. Due to more common rain, snow, road salt, and salt beach use of US models, they tend to rust at a much faster rate.

So I really only have experience with compact trucks here, but the thing is for a 4wd Tacoma vs a similar Ranger or Dakota you'll end up paying 6-4k for a Tacoma and 5-3K for a Dakota/Ranger with 200k miles, the difference is at 200k miles the Tacoma is just broken in and has another 100k miles before major issues crop up, whereas the others are at just about to need the engine and trans to be rebuilt, the price points become similar across all three when the Tacomas are at 300k since at that point the life remaining is about the same.

Nope. Most have a 4cylinder 1.6L (I think the Sport version has a 1.8, but don't quote me). Gets great MPGs, but only puts out like 95 HP. At altitude (7000 feet or more) it struggles to hit 45 uphill. But once on the trails, I'm mostly unstoppable. Super short wheelbase is handy.

He lives in the desert with 2% humidity, no snow, and no road salt. Conditions are pretty much ideal for avoiding rust.

Even with very little snow and road salt here (once or twice every few years) We've usually got 70-85% humidity plus the salt in sea spray. They rust to pieces here.

Anyone else not wash their vehicles after wheeling? I keep the mud on for a day or two, like a badge of honor.
>>
>>17326160

i used to, but the stuff fucks with the paint
>>
>>17326160
I never wash my Ford Ranger. I've been through so many tree tunnels that when washed, it look like a punch of kids kept keying the side of the vehicle.

It may be edgy/ try-hard to leave on mud and dirt on your vehicle. But it honestly looks better than light white scratches on the side of my black truck. So what I do now is just spray it with the garden hose and whatever stays on, stays on.

You should wash the underside with a water sprinkler, though.

>>17326200
Not as hard as trees and rocks...
>>
>>17326233

True, but i dont put myself in a situation where i grind my paint up against those

No but seriously. I actually care very little about the paint condition of my vehicle. Every quarterpanel and the hood has some indentations from either a rock or a tree. It's my work vehicle so when you have deadlines and places to be, you sometimes go a bit faster than you should, hehe.

Plus it's nice to just (((find new roads)))

Bought it for 3500 burgerbux. Did I do good or should I kill my self?
>>
>>17333025
>3500 for a fucking beat to shit burban with leather

you did really bad, what the fuck.
that thing is worth 1k tops

that's the first time i see a GMT400 denali though, didn't even know they existed.
>>
>>17333025
$3500 is a little steep for a GMT400 Denali, but it's clean so it's alright. Denalis in general aren't prime offroad material, lots of exterior plastic to break off. As a DD it'll be great though.
>>
>>17333051
It's in great shape aside from those kings, it runs great.I have a company vehicle which I DD so this is purely my weekend/off road vehicle which I plan on working on, so there's that.

>>17333048 I'm not sure where the Hell you're finding Burbans for 1k. All around here at that price range have 250k plus and are beat to living fuck. The Tahoe (and Toyota) taxing the south is insane
>>
>>17333074
Things*. Fucking phone posting.
>>
>>17333074
Honestly, if you'd wanted a Denali for offroad you should've gotten one that was the next bodystyle up, that way it's have the 6.0 LS motor instead of the 350. Still, once you pull all that plastic shit off it'll be alright.
>>
>>17333089
Well the bad plastic step rails are the first thing I'm going to get of. Other than that there isn't really a lot of exterior plastic. What sold me was how mechanically sound it was, certainly doesn't feel like a truck with 150k on it. And like I mentioned, the Tahoe tax in the south is unreal because how much Dale and Clyde jerk over these things; compared to the others I've seen in my area, this was a steal.
