Classic Car General, restoration edition.
This iron block pig is getting close to being. 78 Bronco is best Bronco.
If my battery is reading 12.3 volts when off, but 16-18 when running what do I need to fix.
>>17288806
Ummm...voltage regulator?
That's a weird one. Never seen that before.
>>17289081
So just new alternator? I thought they were internally regulated
>>17289090
What kind of car are we talking about?
If it's your old Ford truck, it has an external regulator. It could be the alternator though, just take a multimeter and see what it's putting out before and after the regulator. That should narrow it down.
>>17288806
Check if the voltage increases with engine RPM
If it does you need a voltage regulator. If the alternator is internally regulated you need an alternator.
Officially started work on this, FINALLY.
>>17289383
Today was a good day.
Today's work
>>17288221
>>17289383
Looks awesome, what is it and what all are you doing to it?
>>17289394
What amI looking at?
Started doing all the weatherstrips on my Bronco in preparation for installing the new carpet.
>>17289433
Before
After.. this has been bugging me for a while
Took out one of the gto's to clean it up a bit. One day I will drive all the cars into a field and take a picture of them together. Like a car family photo.
Though sadly 3 of them are currently getting restored by me, my brother and my dad and the third/fourth 70 gto is in boxes with no plans to be restored anytime soon.
Thankfully college is over for the summer so now I can get shit done with the 78 trans am.
>>17289433
1971 Torino, 351C, 4 speed
Doing everything. The dude I bought it from had no clue what he was doing, and a lot of stupid stuff is done poorly or plain nigger rigged. Just started stripping the trim and interior today, and found the build sheet (the second picture). My car's birth certificate, essentially.
>>17289577
Good lord almighty, what a looker
>>17289481
>>17289493
Cool, but I'd get the space-time warping taken care of next.
>>17289592
I honestly like the other 70 better, but this one has diven from California to Michigan in the late 80's so it has that going for it (might have a pic somewhere) The other 70 was supposed to be my other brothers project but he decided that he wanted to be different and bought an rx8. I still hope to convert him but he hates classics because I Like them (the triplet lyfe)
>>17289611
It's on the list, but I won't be able to get to it for a little while
>>17289684
>rx8
Yeesh. You can be my triplet anytime.
>>17289590
That horizontal speedo, huuuungh. My 72 Ford F100 had that and I loved it. I know what you mean about nigger rigged, my Bronco was the same way. Everything was held together by thread pretty much, electrical system included.
Got any more pics?
Really wish this truck had a horizontal speedo. Only real aesthetic design I have a complaint with.
>>17289699
Found the pic.
I still have faith, my other brother bought a 73 formula so now we are second gen firebird bros!
/ccg/ confirmed best general?
>>17289789
That is worthy of being deemed epic.
And yes, /ccg/ is best general.
>>17289789
Damn man, that is just such a fine automobile
>>17289709
>>17289728
That looks awesome.
I don't understand people. The guy put in an electric fuel pump, wired it right across the carpet to a switch he put on the dash. Car stays running even if the ignition is shut off. Also the classic electric-fan-to-dash-switch. I don't like aluminum radiators, gonna get a copper and brass and drop it in. Have the original fan, and I think the shroud is floating around somewhere.
>>17289789
Also, you should get top photo made into a large print, framed, and put on your wall. It's got a good vibe to it.
Building a hotside is harder than I thought and I haven't even started yet. Can't decide on welding v-bands to the manifolds or just getting flanges and doing it oldschool. Cutting the manifolds and welding v-bands would help me point the exhaust straight as opposed to having crazy angles going in opposite directions
I'm afraid of having issues with fitting the coldside and the exhaust getting in the way
>>17289789
>$1.61
hnnnngggg
Why are classic mustake windows such shit /ccg/? I had to re-glue the window back into the bracket today, fuck this shit.
On the flipside i did remove a mouse nest from the headliner, which is good
>>17289684
Fill me in, why is driving a car from california to a destination desirable/important?
>spend $3k to have engine professionally rebuilt as a long block from largest and most respected engine re builders in state.
>get engine back
>put motor in car and mount to transmission
>connect ALL the shit: vacuum lines, heater hoses throttle linkage, starter, EVERYTHING
>Pour in coolant and instantly have half a gallon pour out of the oil drain plug.
>Super great motor shop says "You void your warranty by removing head even though you can see the leak is above the head gasket.
GOOD JOB FUCKFACES. I took all the shit off the motor and pulled it again two days ago to bring back to them. this is my first restoration.
>>17290610
It's so strange seeing the master cylinder up there
>>17290637
compared to where? All the prewar stuff with it under the floor?
>>17290642
Some postwar have it there, too. It's where it is on my '47. I'm just so used to seeing it there now, it's funny to see it elsewhere
What do I need to know about 1950's Cadillacs before investing in one? I thought about asking in the questions thread, but I figured there'd be more informed anons here.
>>17291536
Depends on the year; the X frame can have issues and parts go from readily available to unobtainable.
Tell me more about it and I'll advise accordingly.
79 trans am dude, I can't get the intake manifold off, It's loose in the front but something is still holding it down. But other than that it's going good. Unfortunately I had to settle with the 'turkey tray' style gasket since that's the only thing anyone could get ordered.
>>17291735
I'd say check for any bolts holding it in still... Dist is removed I assume? Sometimes they need a good love tap to separate old sealant
Old pic somwhat related
>>17291840
I'm an Idiot, I didn't think I needed to remove the distributor since it's not even touching the manifold.
>>17288806
>running a generator
>year of our Ford 154
>>17291952
It's an alternator senpai.
>>17291962
I know, it was a joke.
>>17291975
Don't tease it if you don't mean it, baby
>>17291986
i'll do what the fuck i want.
>>17292001
Cool down, papa, don't you blow your top
>>17292002

>>17292005
I dig your style, Jack, and I dig your taste in cars
>>17291952
>>17291962
But an alternator IS a generator.
</autism>
>>17292016
No it's not. The two devices are fundamentally different.
What's a reasonable price to pay to reupholster my front bench seat?
>>17292022
>fundamentally different.
>Generator
Spinny mechanical energy in, DC electrical energy out.
>Alternator
Spinny mechanical energy in, DC electrical energy out.
I know, the generator is functionally a series-wound motor operating in reverse; a pure DC device, while the alternator requires a rectifier to output DC.
But in automotive purposes they serve the same function.
>>17292050
>But in automotive purposes they serve the same function.
Maybe at a glance but how they achieve the goal is different.
With a generator system the battery is used to power all the accessories and ignition system with the generator recharging the battery indefinitely. This is why lights on generator'd cars seem to get much brighter when the engine is under load.
An alternator itself powers all the accessories and ignition system while giving the battery a token trickle charge. You can run an alternator car without a battery as long as the engine stays running but you can't do the same with a generator.
>>17290610
I'm 'bout to have my engine rebuilt, but I'm taking the heads to a different shop than the block
Why must they be so expensive... it's so damn beautiful
>>17292127
That's too much.
I'm all for retro styling.. but retro-futurisitc? Nah.. Too Fallout 3 for me
>>17292127
Because they're so beautiful. Personally, my dream caddy is a 62 DeVille convertible.
>>17292157
That's a fine automobile as well
>>17292145
It's so... space age. The chrome lines... the sleek design. MMMHH YES.
Would parts from a bubble caprice/impala SS fit in the box caprice? Thinking specifically about suspension upgrades.
>>17292168
I feel like in a bang for buck category, this would lose on all accounts except for most land styled spaceship, but even then the Lumina APV would win in a landslide.
>>17292127
My dream side-hustle would be to have a fleet of white, finned caddies and rent them out as wedding limos.
>>17292174
>Lumina APV
Oh man, that's nasty... not nearly on the same level
>>17292177
That sounds... lucrative
Convince me not to, /o/
A 1986 mazda 929, 2 liter engine and only 84'000 km.
The price is 1'800€ and it passed technical control.
>>17292193
>>17292193
space ship is as spaceship does
I betchya the Lumina would in in a race too.
>>17292210
Nah. '59 Coupe DeVille does a 0-60 in 11.4 seconds whereas a 1990 Lumina will do it in about 13.
>>17292205
Yeah, but it's ugly
>>17292205
>mazda
>not rx7 or mx5
that 929 isn't even a 4 door.
>>17292233
>that 929 isn't even a 4 door.
good
>>17292233
There are no cheap mx5 in this country, sadly. Same thing for rx7.
Everything that's even remotely famous is in "I know what I got" range of price, and I'm not ready to spend 10k on a car that doesn't pass technical controls and is awaiting yet another rebuild because the previous owner states it's "losing compression".
>>17292261
Maybe look for something other than a Mazda, since you can't get your hands on the only good models they made?
>>17291851,
Don't beat yourself up aboot it , I make mistakes all the time, at least I'm lucky enough to have not been killed from a breaking Jack stand (serveral times)
>>17292323
What a car
>>17292316
I like the design of 80s cars, but over here anything interesting is drowned in a sea of shitboxes.

(Frame connecters, working on new headers+3 inch exhaust but keeping the oe tips on it)
>>17292362
It's not in a bad shape, but it's got some exhaust leaks and (apparently) some excessive play in the forward half-wheel.
>>17292378
It's so nice to see an interior that's in nice shape after having to stare at mine for extended periods of time
>>17292380
only respectable mention in your list of shit. I'd rive the fuck out of it.
3.0 i6 5-speed?
>>17292171
Most of them will go in fine, the '91 redesign was 98% body and 2% running gear.
>>17292389
2.0 i4 150cv
Handbrake is also too weak apparently, another thing to add to the list of repairs.
>>17292386
What are you looking for, interior wise I may still have a bunch of spare(not in 100% condition but still workable) int parts that id just give away I'm a wierdo that for some reason has to have triple spares of everything, and am to lazy to sell things cause I work 70+ hours a week
>>17292323
Turns out It wasn't the distributor but a bolt that I didn't see. But how fucked am I with all this rust in the heads?
>>17292453
oh shit nigga
>>17292453
Mask off the holes and hit it with a wire brush lol
>>17292475
I'll do that, would it hurt to hit it with the shop vac to get some of the pieces out?
>>17292453
Not bad at all, scotch Brite scuff pad, on a die grinder (or equivalent) and some wd 40 will take it right off (done this more times than I can count) moisture gathers on all un sealed milled areas, usually Les than .005 deep of rust blistering
>>17292453
A: cry
B: find out how all that rust got there in the first place.
>>17292485
Yeah, or blast it away with air if you have a compressor.
>>17292518

>>17292496
>>17292498
>>17292518
I'm sorry I'm such a fucking tard, It's cork or some shit mixed with a bit of rust. There's suppose to be that lip there and I guess they filled it in with that. But I suppose moisture got in there because the gasket had no rtv on it.
>>17292174
You're not wrong. The '59 Cadillac is lackluster to drive; a shame, really, since it's so beautiful.
>>17292415
You're too kind, man... I'm just referring to my classic interior in general... I'm not lucky enough to own a Trans-am
>>17292589
It's what's left of a gasket, they used to be made of cork. Dun b sorry, it's better to ask a really straightforward question and know what to do than to fuck something up lol
>>17292659
You're right and thanks! anyway, Do i need to get a replacement gasket for there or will it be fine with the new turkey pan gasket I got?
>>17292676
I'm no expert, but assuming the turkey pan gasket was made for that engine then it should be fine. If you want to go the old school route you could always buy a roll of cork gasket material and cut your own. You can get it at any auto supply store.
>>17292774
From everything I've seen no one has filled those in so i think i'll be fine.
>>17292415
>>17292624
If anybody need t/a parts I may have extra s laying around so feel free to ask the worst I can say is no :)
>>17292589
Don't beat yourself up over that stuff it's all an learning experience, I'm always happy to try to help, and there's still tons for me to learn
>>17293041
>so feel free to ask the worst I can say is no :)
way to sound like you're on OKCupid
>>17293069
I guess I'm to outta the loop on that one I've never used that crap, I do say the stupidest s**t sometimes tho
>>17292552
Got a dash?
I'm debating on getting an early 70's truck and don't know if I want a Chevy or Ford.
The Chevys are cheaper and the SBC is a great engine to work on and parts are super cheap, but all other Chevys I've had were total garbage.
I love Fords just for their great looks and they're reliable as all hell, and every Ford I've had was pretty great. It's just everyone else also wants a Ford and some sellers hike the price way up because "it'll be worth so much more when it's restored durrr"
What's your guys' opinions?
>>17293149
GMC is best tho
>>17292228
>pop-ups
>ugly
There is something wrong here.
Think modern cars will ever try to recreate "hidden" headlights like they had on 60s and early 70s cars?
>>17293149
>early 70's truck
International tho.
>>17293739
>Think modern cars will ever try to recreate "hidden" headlights like they had on 60s and early 70s cars?
Nope, too dangerous
>>17293739
I just do any cars from roughly 1980-2000, with a few rare exceptions. Pretty much all of the everyday man's cars turned into granny-tier vehicles. Boxy, blunt, harsh, dull.
But that's just me.
>>17294074
I just can't do*
Anyone here have any experience with rechroming? Got some problem areas that need to be taken care of, wondering what the cost is gonna be
>>17294117
Expensive, especially if there's no one local to you who does it, meaning freight charges.
You're probable better off trying to find a decent set from a parts car or junk yard.
>>17294117
Cheaper to buy a reproduction chrome grille sorry bro
>>17294131
That's what a lot of people say, big money. I heard that the bad stuff can be taken off and some sort of imitation chrome put on, I'll probably end up doing that.
>>17294143
Worst case, clean off the rust and buff the fuck out of it, then clearcoat to prevent further rusting.
>>17294148
you can do a powdercoat too. really looks like chrome to me.
>>17294160
Agreed.
>>17294160
Yeah, that's what the dude was talking about. Powdercoat, man.
$800 about an hour and a half from me, complete but not running. What do you guys think?
>>17294469
>>17294469

>>17294481
Don't know, I haven't talked with the owner and it doesn't say in the ad
>>17294494
Pending details, but it seems like a good deal as it sits, if you're into trucks
>>17289849
Thanks man, I've put a lot of work into that interior.
People do all sorts jicky electrical work because doing it properly actually takes time. The harness for the power rear window on my Bronco was fucked, so I deleted the tailgate switch (regretfully) and ran a new set of wires from the battery to the switch and then along the frame rail with the rest of the wiring back to the tailgate window. It took a good 6 hours to get all the right materials and do it properly, but it's done right and I know it won't fail.
Just out of curiosity, why do you like copper radiators better? Aluminum transfers heat better, or am I mistaken?
Old picture, but I finished weatherstripping the top and cargo area. Just have to do the front doors and windows now, then carpet.
Also fixed the jicky as fuck wiring to the tail lights, now my shit actually passes state inspection.
>>17293052
Thanks again guys for the help, I scraped all the gasket and crud off of the intake and heads so tomorrow I'll get it all back together.
>>17293052
Also If you don't mind me asking. Do you have a spare passenger side door armrest? If so I was wondering how much you'd like for it. My ex girlfriend accidentally ripped it almost in half trying to pull the door shut a few months ago.
how do I into mobile sofas
what's a good place to start
I made a thread the other night but need more info. There's a 69 Grand Prix Model J that a family member of mine got in an estate. I kinda want it but how well would it hold up with 58k on the odometer? I have a shitbox that I'm currently driving but God knows how long it has left. Could the Grand Prix be a backup daily driver, and if so/not what could I expect out of it?
>>17296090
You tell us what you want and your favorite marque.
>>17295423
I don't think I have a good one I just had to replace mine for the same reason but I'll check and let you know...... the sun sure likes late 79s early 80s plastic

After 5 long months, I finally had the money to fix up my MGB..just in time to have to park it for another 4 months.
Still feels good to have the little thing back on the road though.
>jump into project build thinking it wont be more than 2k give or take a little

>that tacky as fuck head unit
KYS
>>17299776
I one hundred percent agree with you. Modern head units look autistic as fuck. I saw some at the audio shop from retro sound but they looked equally tacky in a retro sense. this thing works but I dislike how it looks. If you know anything that would work and doesn't break the bank I'd love to see.
>>17299587
Why the fuck would you put that gaudy piece of garbage in that truck? You cut into it? And you fucking paid somebody to do it, you didn't even ruin your dash yourself! I seriously hope you fucking die, you are a total waste of oxygen and every thing you post is an abomination. And your faggot ass is probably going to respond with ";)". Every thread on /o/ you post in, you get berated, how does it feel to go out of your way to forgo your anonymity on a Ugandan jumping jack image board and have literally every single person hate you?
>>17300099
The holes were cut by the previous owner.
Since they were already there, I figured I'd use them. Feels good having an amp though.l, that was the upgrade I just did.
>>17292048
I bought a cover and did it with a buddy and it wasn't too bad of a job and it came out great, took a good portion of the day to finish. If you're confident in yourself go for it, champ
>>17297284
Alrighty, it's okay if you don't find a good one. Also just out of curiosity how does the radiator fit in the core support. I have a new fan shroud and my old radiator won't fit the shroud plus it was being held in place with zipties. I'm thinking about just buying a new replacement one but I can't figure out how it fits in there.
>>17300099
Holy shit, KEK
>>17299587

Anybody else replace door weatherstrips on their classic?
I was cleaning and test fitting tonight before I glue it all down tomorrow, and DAMN the doors are tight as fuck. I have the strikers adjusted all the way out and the doors sit flush with the body but you have to close it pretty hard. I'm assuming they'll shrink down and conform with a little heat and time but I'm not sure.
>>17300706
Have to do that on this one of these days. Never done it before, I feel like that's the type of job that's a tedious pain in the ass, was it?
>>17300823
It's not as bad as you think, but it is tedious. I've got half the truck done. Just take your time, don't rush it. Clean all the dirt and debris and old glue off well before glueing the new ones on. Test fit with masking tape and cut before tacking them on. Work the weatherstrip into the corners very well and don't stretch it on the test fit or you'll come up short at the ends.
>>17300823
Also, the window channels can be a bitch. Those are supposed to just pop into place but I might have to super glue the corners so they don't fold up.
>>17301037
>>17301045
Fuck. I've got to do those on mine.

>>17301247
More than 120 for a head unit. The pioneer I've had for the last 3 years was 50 bucks.
>>17301275
as far as head units go, especially specialty ones (like the style-correct ones for your truck), 120 isn't a lot. But I guess i cant understand that.
I'm more worried about how you'd go about repairing the dashboard in order to fit a correct-style head unit in. What car is it?
>>17301275
Oh, you could always chrome spray-paint the pioneer, kek.
>>17301347
Kek that sounds terrible. All of the vintage look ones I've seen are horrifically plastic. Pain in the ass that's for sure.
>>17301337
It was cut for a single din unit. I have no desire to weld the dash up, there is literally no point in doing a factory restore on this vehicle. It's got a non matching engine and transmission, non factory paint and it's just an old truck. My goal is to make a quick, fun daily drive able pickup that has the amenities I want (banging stereo, disk brakes down the road)
>>17301386
I bought a classic head unit for my moms 71 422 that was metal and looked stock but had bluetooth. I'll go look for the box.
>>17301608
Nice. I'd love to see it.
>>17301632
Its in a storage facility right now so ill take a pic of it when I get out there, too many cars is sometimes a bad thing. Cant find the box though I must have thrown it out.
>>17301676
Fair enough. That being said, I don't really worry about the head unit. It doesn't match, but it is functional.
>>17300330
With older stuff the rad has brackets along the sides that mount hard to the core support.
Newer stuff usually has pegs on the bottom that go into rubber bushings, and clamps that push it down on top.
Yours, well, I have no fucking clue from the pic. Cradles on the bottom and a bracket on top?
Post a pic of the rad.
bamp
>>17299587
Jeez, that looks like the same as the first stereo I ever put in a car, which was my Grand Am when I was 18, and also had red neon floor lights to boot.
c'mon man
>>17303093
I get it already. Look at the rest of the responses
>>17301962
The rad is not original to the car and was literally ziptied in place. I think the fan shroud actually hold it in place and these rubber feet that fit in holes on the bottom actually help it stand.
>>17301386
You can get retro style head units with an aux jack from LMC truck.
They're like 300 bucks but when it comes time for audio in my Bronco, thats whats going in. Not throwing a modern head unit in it.

>>17303366
It's a lot of money for a head unit, and I have trouble justifying the cost, but I really want to keep the interior looking retro.
Anyone have experience with welded diffs offroad?
>>17304462
Fair enough. I don't want a boomertastic resto mod looking interior, but now the stereo works and I already had the head unit.
When I've got more money and less bills it'll be something to look into.

>>17288806
Measured with a voltmeter? Motorcycle indicators are often inaccurate.
Your resting voltage is about right and charging voltage always exceeds resting voltage, but check your factory service manual for charging system limits. Consistent 18v is on the high side. I suspect either the voltage regulator or possibly a bad regulator ground, but don't buy any parts until you performed a charging system test per the service manual and ensured your stator is healthy.
12 volts is a nominal rating which confuses people. A 12 volt battery putting out 12 volts at no load needs charging or is fucked if it won't charge.
Of course since you didn't post year, make and model I can't reference that machine, so hit some model-specific forums because there may be a much better regulator you can replace yours with. Many bike regs are marginal and enterprising mechanics have found heavier duty units to replace them.
>>17305603
Shit, wrong thread. Troubleshooting info still applies though since car and truck systems behave similarly. Integral regulators are easy to replace and cheap too.
>>17305603
>>17305611
I traced the problem to the regulator. This one was melted inside the housing. Thankfully it was a 25 dollar
>>17305626
Cheap voltage regulators sometimes smoke and stink for a few days. I replaced mine years ago since the old one was getting worse with clicking, buzzing, and not charging. The cheap one was all the shop had and could have for a while, so I bought it. Then I learned after I installed it that it's NORMAL to have smoke for a few days with that type.
So I discovered today that my passenger side A-pillar on my Bronco is filling up with water when it rains, and it then seeps through the floor at the seam. Doesn't seem like it's coming in from the windshield or body seams on the outside. Can it somehow be coming through the cowl?

No spotlight, yet?
Alright, who's the memer who said that Opel Kadett C's are great and affordable classics to own in Europe.
I've been going through classified ads and internet offers for weeks now and they turned out to be neither affordable nor common.
And that fucking sucks so much because I like how these look so much. On top of that they're FR so that'd be even more fun. This is giving me the worst blue balls I've had in years, I'm torn apart.
Just posing a question to you guys. This is my 1999 C5. When do you guys suppose it would be considered a classic? It's 18 years old, and I know that in the US it's a classic by law at 25 years, but do you guys think it will take longer than that for people to perceive it as a classic? It's one of the last cars to have hideaway lights, which dates it noticeably, but I always thought the design was progressive for its time.

I plan on doing a restoration project sometime in the future. Would a '55 Bel Air be a good starter? Or should I start off with something different like a '70s or '80s car?
>>17309559
>It's one of the last cars to have hideaway lights
There were still a fair amount of popup cars into the early 00s. Classic status just depends on how the car is remembered vs. other cars of it's day, it's too early to judge and impossible to predict. No reason to even bother putting a label on it, it's not like one day someone hits a switch and an old car becomes a classic, it's a spectrum.
>>17309577
>you saved yourself from buying trash
How so? It doesn't look that bad on paper. For its time and class anyway. Though I heard that rust is a common problem with these.
>>17309641
They are the very definition of disposable cars, like a Pinto, Omni and such.
It probably looks really good right now until you have to drive it.
Also insurance is always a problem.
>>17296592
I'd say it's kind of impossible to tell just off the odometer whether or not it'll last. my advice is if it sounds good, it's probably good. just look it over, maybe do a compression test, listen for any knocks, that sort of thing. drive it if you can, see how it handles and shifts. see if it needs new tires.
the good news is those cars don't take a lot to keep going, and it isn't too hard to get one running barring a totally fucked engine or tranny.
could be worth it, I ran a beat up 71 fury as a backup daily for a year or so just fine without too much money dumped into it.
>>17309596
The C5 lasted until 2004, so I think it fits into thst category. "Classic" like you said is on a spectrum and it really boils down to opinion, so it is hard to predict.

Staying late after work to finally finish up all the weatherstripping. Windows weren't as bad as I was expecting. They were actually pretty easy.
Found a ton of rotted and leaking seam sealer along the body seams. I had about ten tubes of RTV silicone left over from all the timing chain recalls I did, so fuck it, free leak fix. Can't wait to get carpet in this truck.
Took my car to a boomer show today. About 20 classics (including a beautiful 64 corvair monza) and the rest of the cars were c4-c7 corvettes.
Some guy had the exact car I am restoring (ws6 w72 trans am 4 speed) but he did no work on the trans am himself and the person that redid it for him painted the rims the wrong color and put a 77 grill on instead of a 78 and put in a stock suspension instead of the ws6 version. There were also other minor (major) stuff done wrong, It made me sad that a rare car was buggered up, but the owner liked the car just fine and it was nothing that couldn't be fixed with some time and money.

Also 140 heads don't fit in first-gens that well.
m thinking of getting a 50s Packard Clipper as my intro into Classic Car collecting and as a daily driver. Is maintenance difficult for something of that age, especially considering it's not a luxury car?
>>17314777
considering its not a luxury car? did you mean considering it is a luxury car?
the clipper is an old school luxury car, luxury was more about build quality and ride than fancy gadgets that break ask the time like later luxury cars.
anyhow the short answer is eh. it'll definitely have it's challenges more so than other classics. getting parts might pose a problem considering Packard went under in the 50s. it will probably be pretty simple to work on though. and if your planning to do swaps you probably won't find many pre made kits, and so will need to do some fabrication and planning.
A ford or chevy from the 50s will be by far the easiest to work on and find parts for if your set on that time period. you could probably pick up a shoebox ford in decent shape for what you'd find a Packard for.
I gotta say though, I strongly approve of your taste. there is a reason why everyone still remembers Packard to this day. they were awesome.
>>17314777
Great cars, but parts are virtually impossible to find on short notice. You will need a second car just in case.
Brakes are also weak and pose their challenges with adjusting and daily use.
They are a luxury car, too, so be prepared to pay a premium for parts.
I adore them, but there's a reason I don't own one.
>>17314777
If it has a flathead consider something else.
>>17315143
The Clipper isn't a Packard Caribbean. Packards that aren't Caribbean were just the premium cars of their day.
>>17315359
personally I think those two things are more or less the same thing. but yeah your right they aren't 'top end' cars but are still pretty much luxury in how they were built and outfitted.
anyway to the other guy, I'd say get a ford our chevy if you're going 1950s. it'll just be easier. but hey, if you do get a Packard you'll probably have one of the coolest cars in this thread.
>>17315152
>>17315143
>>17315398
Thanks for the answers. That bit about the parts makes sense, especially since Packard/Studebaker didn't last long after the Clipper was released. I'll probably try and keep my current car then.
I'm not really looking to work on the car too much, so I didn't really think about Ford or Chevy. I want to start my own classic car collection so that when I'm like 70 I have some tangible assets.
>>17315306
Why?
>>17316364
>Why?
A: will barely have enough power to get out of its own way
B: will overheat because you need to push it hard to maintain modern-traffic speeds
C: will overheat because the exhaust ports run through the water jackets
D: may knock with shit gas, by the early 50's flatheads were maxing out their compression ratios just to stay relevant which means they needed high octane. At about 7.5:1 and up you'll need airplane gas
E: No hardened valve seats
F: starting will be a pain no matter how warm it is outside thanks to the low compression
G: valves will probably start sticking because you forgot the oil additives
The only advantage they have going for them is they're about indestructible, no worries about hitting valves or whatnot.
I don't know if 1950's Packard was using OHV yet or not.
4 weeks later, the flywheel is back in, the trans is running relatively smooth, and things are almost back 2 normal

I was thinking about swapping a newer late 80s early 90s 4 speed automatic into my 3 speed auto 79 volvo 242. I assume this should work easily provided both engines are redblocks.
any reason this would be a hard swap?
I'm not sure when I'll get around to this. probably next spring, I'm thinking of buying a winter beater volvo 240 and grabbing as much parts off it as I can after the season is over.

I'm going to agree that it's not a classic. It's a specialty-interest car; sure, but it's not a classic. It's similar to why my DeLorean will never be a classic, or a Grand National. They weren't cars that were built for the masses and had to be saved, they were special interest vehicles that have had a following since day 1 and never had to slog through the duties of daily use or being viewed as disposable crap.

>>17319923
>It's considered a classic collector vehicle to the highest degree, and had the same desirability from the get go.
While it may be desirable as in it would be cool to own one, a lot of people probably would not actually buy one.
>>17319937
Very few can afford one but affordability has nothing to do with whether a car is a classic or not.
>>17319923
Museum piece or investment. I'd be willing to wager that I could walk the cumulative yearly mileage the entirety of those cars that remain accumulate in a single day.
It's more of an antique than a classic, as well. Hence why a lot of what's posted here is not allowed in the AACA; the club for people who own millions of dollars worth of couches with oversized movers.
>>17319963
Lol.
I don't think a classic has to be affordable. A Cadillac DeVille Biarritz from 1959 or a boss 429 may be expensive as fuck but it's still a classic.
Whether or not a car gets driven is an owner issue, not a car issue.
>>17319963
What about "Original Supercars"?
>>17319979
>>17319942
Affordable isn't the point, it's a pre-war car it's a classic but one that is usually only enjoyed from behind a wall of glass or a rope. I don't understand your point in this.
>>17319992
I don't understand the other side. A car is a car, if it's a classic it's a classic regardless of price or use.
>>17319979
Both of those were vehicles that were something special when new; not that they aren't classics, but they're still leagues away from a custom Mercedes of the '30s.
For the sake of this exercise, let's compare a '59 Cadillac to a '59 Corvette. The Cadillac has more of a classic feel because the Corvette had been on a pedestal since day one. They're both classics, but the Corvette is less classic.
>>17319981
This is a great way to put it. They fall into the class of car that has had a following since the moment it rolled off the assembly line.

The prices are going nowhere but through the freakin' roof. I think people sometimes forget these cars were the equivalent of well over $100k USD when new.
Since people with the financial means in the USA gained relatively pain-free access to these cars recently the world market has reacted. Nissan will be starting OEM part reproduction late this year reportedly.
You should see enthusiasts drooling over the car when they realize it has existed without their knowledge for almost 30 years.

Splitting hairs, but - the R32 is an 80's car that carried into the early 90's.
Conjecture: The R32 carried 964 Turbos (90's car) around a track by the nape of the neck, yet a 964 Turbo will set you back over $100,000.
Why? The market dictates. I don't think you could sway a Porsche purist against the certainty of a 964 Turbo's "classic" status. They are coveted because of their notoriety, race pedigree, and rarity - driving their price tag up - cementing them in the minds of car guys as "classic" (historically noteworthy/exceptional)
This will pale in comparison to Skylines. They are gaining notoriety, and rapidly, because of their relative rarity and newly discovered race pedigree. Datsun+Nissan fags, Z enthusiasts, flippers, and collectors alike will join in the inflation party.
The process of cementing the R32 in the minds of American car guys via demand-based price tag spike is happening as we speak. It definitely won't take 20 years - just as long as it takes for video game fags to get promotions

To add to this - imagine in-the-know people spending tens of thousands of dollars sight-unseen, patiently waiting for weeks, and wading through layers of swampy federal bureaucracy for a car that's NOT a classic.
But like you said, give it 20 years, until the well-to-do 90's babies start seeing gray hairs. The nice examples will start a bidding war to the top in my somewhat bullshit opinion

Not much of a jap guy but I see your point (Own a miata for meme status).
The only sad part is that the new generation of car guys are not purists and will ruin a beautiful skyline without a second glance. They already do with old camaros and other pony/muscle cars. I have a sad suspicion that these cars will meet an even worse fate due to boy racers love for "drift cars". That being said jap cars from the 80-90 rust like crazy in michigan (and in general) so most of them I dont think will fair as well as old american cars sitting in the elements. I can only hope that the next generation will not ruin more cars.
I threw up a little when I saw this camaro

I work on Infinitis, but new Lexuses are dope.
I love first gen M45s though.

The ownership costs of the GT-Rs are pretty off limits budget-wise for most boy racers, but guys definitely don't buy this car for leisurely Sunday strolls down main street. There will be some carnage. That jacks up the rarity/value also.
Take Australia for example: the R32 has been sold there since the cars release. Today, because boy racers have destroyed most of them - the sale prices for GT-Rs are HIGHER than the US.
I think the cheap gtst skylines will suffer the same fate as the 240sx though, drifted into oblivion.
That is one fugly Camaro
79 trans am dude with an update. I ended up ordering new bolts and clip things for the fan shroud since I was missing them. Also while I'm ordering stuff I have been having some issues with crankcase pressure. The breathers are getting oil in them, the passenger side breather smokes, and when it's been driven the other breather and dipstick tube smoke. It's not too bad and only noticeable with the hood up. I've been hesitant to put a pcv system on it for fear that it'll suck more oil since the breathers are collecting some. If I do need a pcv system can someone help me pick out what I need?
Is this your Rolls, Drac?

i fixed my radio, now when i turn the volume knob it increases the volume instead of acting as the "DJ Mode knob" just took the head unit out and sprayed it down with a bunch of electronic cleaner. Also the speakers had disintegrated, so i replace them with some $20 Boss' good shit for the money
Went to the Carlisle Ford nationals today. saw some good shit, would've bought myself a '71 cougar if i had the money, but sadly had to return home without it. So heres a picture of a Cyclone Spoiler i took
