Buy a new one since they are so cheap and we don't do that anymore

You can sometimes change the voltage regulators out. Otherwise you just have to get a new one.
Used to be alternator shops that could rebuild them but they way they are made now you can't really service them anymore.

Heh, I knew that engine compartment looked familiar...
re:alternator - replace it with re-manufactured one
rebuilding an alternator costs as much as buying a new one.
installing one yourself is pretty simple and a good step up for those of you that usually just do oil and brakepads type of stuff. the hardest part is the belt and alternators usually are setup with a rail to adjust tension easily.
also get a voltage meter thingie. they're like 25 bucks at walmart and useful for all sorts of wiring and electronic troubleshooting nightmares that you'll encounter in older cars and engine swaps
okay good luck have fun this is a good entry level project for someone that wants to do something more than their sparkplugs

you mean replace?
Smack it with a hammer. If that doesn't fix it get a new one.

you can test one yourself with the ammeter walmart guy posted.
what you do is touch both needle sensors to the battery +/- thingies while the car is running. if its a 12v the readinf should be a few amps above it because that means its charging. if it says like -13.5 that means its still charging but you got the thing on backwards lol
