Serious question, what is this obsession people have with seats? Is it about comfort? Weight reduction? Safety? Or is it just a boiracer meme? My stock NA seats are insanely comfortable. I see no reason to switch them out

Depends on how fast you drive around corners. Keeps you from sliding around your seat. Not a whole lot to do with normal driving comfort.

>>
>>17273685
It's simple...don't let it intimidate you. Just be very careful when using the Allen key on the adjustment pin. It's NOT threaded so don't use any torque or you will strip the splines in the pin and in the caliper

You understand me, you son of a bitch?

I'll repeat - the 4mm Allen key adjustment screw is not threaded. Don't try to torque it left or right to tighten or loosen it - that's not how it works. It's literally just suspended in there and can be pulled out with a magnet

Main thermo fan died today halfway to my destination. Luckily for me, the AC fan comes on if I run my AC that doesn't work. I had to stop and let it cool every 4-5km in sub-50km/h traffic.

The interior is shit (like really shit, I never saw an interior this shit to be honest, previous owner wrapped the whole car with fake white leather and removed the carpets for some kind of bathroom floor)

There's a huuuuuge mark on the hood as you can see and they tried to hide it with a spray can which is worse now

I love the car and there's no rust but people are really shit and don't respect their own goods
>>
>>17274414
At least your panels are all lined up properly. Not a bad looking Miata. With a good wash and wax your car would really stand out.

My car has good paint, but my bonnet, headlights, and front bumper are all out of line. I can try to align them during this long weekend.

Sup, /mg/. Glad to see a new thread is up.

I was meaning on making a whole different thread for this, but I want to start with you guys.

Bought my NA6 a while ago and its perfect. The only issue is that the previous owner was backing into her garage and hit a shelf, and while it isn't totally obvious and terrible (I edited the picture to really focus on the dents, thats why the colors fucked) it keeps me awake at night.

I'm thinking of slapping a sticker over it to try to cover it while I look for an opportunity to fix it. Let me know what you guys think. If you have any other sticker ideas, please let me know!

"Once you get the caliper back together and bolted down, you have to readjust the parking brake. Simply spin the wheel and tighten the allen screw until the pads make contact and the wheel stops spinning. Then, back it off a third of a turn. Reinstall the cap on the allen screw, and you’re done. Don’t forget to put on your parking brake again before putting the rear tires on the ground."

Don't even trip, dawg, I got'chu.

The piston in each rear caliper is easily adjustable. You just remove a bolt in the back of the caliper, and underneath there is an adjustment screw that you turn with a simple allen wrench (hex key).
>>
>>17276204
Already changed discs because I thought they were uneven, so I know how to remove the assembly. The thing is that I don't want to remove hoses or the cylinder.
>>
>>17273505

>>17276249
With the thing I recommended all you have to do is get the wheel and one bolt out then twist a hex wrench - that's it.

Would a Miata be a terrible DD? I'm trying to find something that's reliable and all that jazz that I also can have some fun with if I need. I like to drive when I'm stressed so the more fun the car is to drive, the better it is for me.
The only cheap, RWD, and manual cars in my price range besides old BMWs I can't afford the mantince on is the Miata. During August through April I have no garage and I get pretty snowy winters. I need to drive back and forth to school every day(I live by a bus stop so I can take that if I really need to) and I have to drive to my hometown 3-4 times a year (300 miles away). Someone please tell me a Miata is a bad idea. Please.
>>
>>17277074

its impractical if you have children on need a lot of space for shit.

Well I'm moving into a new apartment in August that's 300 miles away. I'm not bringing that much stuff (no furniture or anything) but I still feel like I couldn't fit everything in there. I could definitely just get my parents to help
How reliable are the NA motors? Like I said, I won't have a garage in the winters for a couple years so I can't have it die on me because I'll have to be outside in sub freezing temperatures to fix it.
Also I just realized this probably isn't the best place to ask because you guys are all biased

the 1.8 bp is one of the most reliable engines ever imo. It's understressed, and over engineered for what it does.

Keep up on the timing belt and water pump. We are talking about 20 year old cars. Things will probably break, sensors will probably fail. But the motor itself is pretty rock solid.

How pricey are Miatas to maintain? I'm going to be looking for my second car (I currently own a 89 Mazda 323 hatchback, but the frame is totalled... Honestly I owned a 1.6 and thought it pulled harder than my current 1.8. Granted, I was running the 1.6 with the exhaust manifold essentially not there, and my 1.8 has a full exhaust, but in my honest opinion the 1.6 is just as "fast" or "peppy" as the 1.8. Only thing I don't like on the 1.6 is the fucking AFM instead of MAF. Doesn't matter when you're running Megasquirt though ;)

Absolutely dirt fucking cheap. If you don't count modifications that I've done, I'm sure I haven't done more than 400$ of actual repairs on that car in the entire 5 years I've owned it. Only things gone bad on me are the power steering high pressure line, the clutch slave, and the tie rod boots.

Yeah man, it's a hard dog. That spacer thing didn't fit too well on mine either so I had to hammer down a little lip on the seat belt tower so it could sit right. Plus the bolts they included to go into the seat belt tower and the seat belt reel were the wrong thread pitch, so they wouldn't even work. And the nuts they included to bolt in those back legs of the roll bar were a different thread pitch than the bolts they went on, and the nuts weren't even grade 8. Ended up going to the hardware store to grab grade 8 nuts that were the correct pitch to replace them.

Thanks for complimenting my car, too, most of /mg/ tends to hate it. I'm trying to piece together a car that I like with parts that aren't cheap eBay garbage, but I don't think they understand that. Don't have any current pics of it because today was the first day I actually took the car out, but here's one from last summer minus the roll bar, AK trunk, and my wheels looking a bit different.

Real GV tail or rep?
>>
>>17295462
My old miat had a style bar on it. After driving around for a few months I realized it was loose. I inspected it for the first time and discovered 2 out of 4 bolts were missing, and one was a big ass lag bolt just jammed in there, not a machine screw. It was the one holding down the seat belt.

I tapped out all new threads and put in grade 8 bolts.

>>
>>17298352
It's one of the best looking cars currently made, a little slower due to the added weight, and useless if you're looking for a track weapon, as nobody has yet made SCCA-approved rollbars for it. If you get it, make sure to replace the antenna with a stubby one, like from a S2000. That will eliminate the whistling noise people have reported hearing at highway speeds with the roof retracted.
>>
>>17298284
A torsen with no tires touching the ground acts like an open diff. That method only determines if you have a clutch type LSD, which miatas don't have

The only way to know for sure is to pull an axle and look inside the differential. If there is a bar running across the hole, then it's open. If there is no bar then you have a torsen.

Or just put one wheel in the dirt and one on asphalt and dump the clutch

Depends what your motives are. If you want to turbo it in the future, the early 1.8 (94/95) has the same oil feed coming off the block as the 1.6 engines do, so it makes running a turbo oil feed super easy. Aside from that they're all about the same truthfully.
>>
>>17293498
You've got a blown fuse and/or relay somewhere.
>>
Been a bike guy forever, had this miat for about a year. Ended up doing the crankshaft replacement myself so I'm not a huge faggot with a wrench, but the fact remains I know full all about how vacuum systems work in cars.

Occasionally, but only ever in the last 2 weeks, the engine stalls under its own power coming to a stop. I can't seem to consistently trigger this to diagnose, but it will crank and start perfectly fine immediately after, so long as I give it a touch of throttle to keep it over a reluctant 500rpm - thus my suspicion being vacuum. I've checked all my hoses to the best of my ability for cracks, sealing and started checking my relays for continuity.

Any ideas?
>>
>>17302132
Easiest way to check for vacuum leaks is with starting fluid. Spray some of that shit around hoses and listen for the engine revs to climb. If that doesn't happen it's probably not a vacuum leak. My best guess would be the TPS(though I've yet to see one go bad) or a dirty IACV, or dirty MAF. I'd clean all those (and the corresponding connectors) and see if that problem doesn't go away.
>>
>>17302191
Good ideas.
I've only ever ridden carb'd bikes so half the shit attached to any new engine effectively works on witchcraft and pixies as far as I'm concerned.
Long weekend but few funds, so these all seem pretty cheap to do.

Cheers again.

i have a stock NB '02
could i fit a full turbo kit and a new suspension for around ~1000 to max ~1500 bucks?
>>
>>17304998
of course you can but it will all be chinkshit. The turbo will bust it's welds and throw them into your engine and the suspension will go bad within a year

So I just bought an NA and the bite point of the clutch is right at the top. Is this normal for miatas or is the clutch kill?
>>
>>17305485
It's like that for a lot of them, yes. You can adjust the linkage on the pedal to make it bite lower

Help me decide between three tire setups pls
1. 15x8 Kosei K5R (Lightweight) with fairly new Yoko S. Drives 205/50r15
2. 15x7 Rota RB (kinda pigfat) with sub half life Dunlop Direzza ZIIs also 205/50r15 (not star specs)
3. 14x6.5 BBS (Lightweight) but with basically new 175/60r14 Direzza ZII Star Specs (size unavailable in USA)

Option 1 has the worst tire compound but the best wheel/tire size combo
Option 2 has the almost best compound but not much life left and on a heavy, thinner rim
Option 3 is a wild card, the best compound and lightest option but very thin, my logic with this is that it could let me have great tire feel and fun at low speeds without the higher grip of the other two options. (like muh godmasheen's prius tires)
Downside is that the low width and aspect will make it look funny, as it will be almost an inch shorter than my current setup of 195/60r14. The upside of this is a stiffer, smaller sidewall.

H-help
>>
>>17303566
Possible but with no experience it will make it more timely process. If its a project car and you wanna learn some shit go for it. Could take a day or a month. Depends on you. Someone who knows what their doing can get that done in a day, weekend max.
>>
>>17298682
The NA is just so much more pure IMO. It just feels and drives like a 90's car, that's what I love about mine. It's a beater anyways so putting it around it so much fun. The NB is more refined and from the factory has better features (like, way better). NA is perfect for nostalgia and aesthetic
>>
>>17306549
15x8 then you can throw whatever tires you want on when the S.drives go. They're still a decent tire.
>>
>>17306656
I guess I should have mentioned that the reason I don't just buy 15x8 6ULs and 205 RE-71Rs is that I'm on a limited budget here. (sub $500 for all of these options)
Whatever tires I put on after they go, unless I find a good used set, won't be as good as whatever was on there when I bought it.
>>
>tfw want an NA Miata to restore / learn to wrench more than the basic shit and to go on drives / possible autox and track days
>Budget is $5k for the car, but meeting people on craigslist to look at cars gives me anxiety
>>
>>17306692
The life of the tires isn't enough time to make $400 for a new set of tires? The fuck?
>>
>>17306729
*$5k absolute max

I also haven't driven stick in 7 years
>>
>>17306758
It's not that I don't have the money ever, it's that I can't justify spending that much on tires from my budget. I'm a cheap jew.
Now don't try to work around the problem, help me pick from the options I have
>>
>>17306889
Already said option 1. Stop being a jew or get a bus pass.

M edition? Looks like it might be those colors.
The one I'm thinking about buying has 142k miles for a $3800 price tag. Stock body though with some aftermarket suspension parts, and the driver's seat is pretty worn. Why can't decision making be easier?
>>
>>17306967
Right and I already told you your premise of why I should chose 1 is false. I want it to be the best it can be, while it lasts.
>>17307173
No, just a C package. Go into more info about the suspension mods.

>>17307244
$3800 firm is a bit much for that, but it already has pretty much all the mods you would do to a stock one, so that's pretty nice. I'd say get a compression test and if that checks out then go for it. Also check the tokicos for leaks as they don't have the same lifetime warranty as Konis.

If your key is tight in the hole it will come out with it. Definitely spline.

Fine, 15x8s, esp. lightweight, are better than the others and the S.drives have better treadwear.

Put a shekel in a jar every day and you'll have enough for a good set when it comes time to replace.
>>
>>17277234
Gotta take an extra millisecond when going from 2-3 at full noise.
>>
>>17303566
I did the main bearings just fine by myself. Never taken an engine out before, either. Def need help with re-aligning the drive spline into the bellhousing afterwards, though.
>>
>>17307324
Thanks, I'll see about those the next time I talk to the guy then. Already went to take a look and test-drive it the other day (mostly the guy teaching me how to into manual) and it seemed solid. A good part of why I'm interested in it is to learn how to wrench though, so "it seemed solid" is pretty much my limit there.
>>
Is there an exhaust/muffler that doesn't make my NA sound like a boiracer brapbox? I can't go ITB because it's tarbo'd

>>17307764
I'd love anything that doesn't drone and only has that leaking-downpipe raspy sound above 4krpm.

I'm looking to buy a miata. Is it worth paying a couple extra grand to get a 2nd gen? 1st gens are around 3k in my area.
>>
Finishing up my budget turbo build tomorrow.
I am super excited.
>>
>>17309972
If you're comparing apples to apples when it comes to quality, they're likely going to run about the same. It just comes down to personal preference. A lot of people say that the NA wins for nostalgia, while the NB is a better car pretty much all around.
>>
>>17309972
2nd gens are ugly and you can bolt anything from a 2nd gen to a first gen. Having all the benefits of the 2nd gen and none of its ugly looks is the way to go IMO
>>
>>17309982
Post parts and prices. Also, inb4 it doesn't run.
>>
>>17309972
if you want a real driver's car, the NB has a stiffer chassis, a more powerful and even more reliable engine, more trunk space and slightly better weight balance despite weighing just slightly more. The end result to your daily drive is that it feels more substantial and corners with less chassis flex. The NB is popular in autocross and Spec Miata for this reason.

on the other hand, the interior paneling and seat cushions are slightly thicker, so it's a tighter fit that can be uncomfortable for taller people without modification. I've had to do a couple foamectomies so i can fit in my '99.

if you just want a meme car an NA is fine too
>>
what is a good steering wheel hub that fits the NA?

Finally got to see an RF in person, and I think it's pretty nice. Most NC/ND owners don't acknowledge NAs, but this guy did. Gave me a thumbs up.
>>
>>17310025
I don't want a meme car, I want an affordable, reliable, RWD sports car with a longitudinally mounted engine. This is why I'm attracted to miatas. I've been told to get a 2nd gen because they have more horsepower and better handling, but they cost about 2k more than 1st gen Miatas.
>>
>>17309991
log manifold
Used TD05
Modified 3" Subaru exhaust
EBay intercooler kit
Blue 550cc injectors
DIY pnp megasquirt

No idea on price. I bought everything last year but have only just found the time to work on the car.
>>
>>17310197
then yes, an NB is what you want. They drive beautifully.

To make an NA drive like an NB, you will spend more than that difference anyway.
>>
>>17307764
No, there isn't. I would honestly advise against any sort of exhaust setup unless you really want that signature farty raspyness that you get with miata engines. I have a full ISR on mine and it sounds pretty mean at idle and low RPMs but once you break into 4k it just becomes pure cancer
>>
So my NB is making this beeping sound, almost like morse code. It pauses when i use the electrical window-elevators, or turn on the headlights though. I believe it is the fuel pump. Is this common, and should I do something about it ASAP?
>>
>>17310185
what the fuck am i looking at. do you really only have 22,000 miles?
>>
>>17310239
Yeah. Bought it from the original owner back in 2012 with 10k original.

>>17310226
